“For the Throne” Album - potential clues to S8

I somehow just noticed that the entire “Inspired by Game of Thrones” album was released (they had only release the first 3 songs when I checked about 2 weeks ago), and I listened to the entire thing while taking notes. TLDR take-away: strong evidence that artists were given plot-points for S8, strong evidence of a betrayal for love, lots of fire, and (I think) major arrows towards Danni’s journey for the rest of the show.

Disclaimer: confirmation bias exists, and I love the idea of Danni burning down King’s Landing, so I can’t help but read into that. If the idea of that plot point bothers you, this might not be the lyric analysis you want to read!

Kingdom of One by Maren Morris

This was one of the ones released after (I think…) ep. 1, though it does have some hints to future events.

“First light, sacrifice” (Melisandre dying)

“Bird’s eye, saw the signs” (Bran)

“All you can give, all you can bear, all that you longed for, nothing compares, but nothing is sacred, no one is safe, so you wanna play God? Is that all you got? Would you sell your soul, burn it all, everything that you love, finally become second to none in a kingdom of one?” If this chorus is in-line with the rest of this song, this to me screams: Danni lost nearly everything in the Battle of Winterfell - Jon (parentage reveal), potentially Rhaegal (not that he died, just that he’s kinda Jon’s dragon now), the Dothraki, most of the Unsullied, and her most trusted advisor and friend in Jorah, and now there’s no point in not just burning everything down.

If I squint, the chorus could be about Cersei (everything she’s loved before doesn’t matter next to power, she burnt down the Sept and once Jaime left effectively became a “kingdom of one”), but overall it doesn’t seem to emotionally fit her as well, and Cersei has no involvement with the other Winterfell characters alluded to - nor any involvement in the battle. Also the song ends with even more fire (“burn it all”, “ash to ash, dust to dust”).

Power is Power by The Weekend

I know this song has had a lyric video, but I think it’s still worth examining. “Power is Power” (those words, not the song itself) is obviously a Cersei line, but the first verse seems very Night-King-oriented (“I was born in the ice and snow, with the winter wolves, in the dark alone”)

The chorus though then goes into something that could fit Cersei or (probably) Danni as well (“A knife in my heart couldn’t slow me down, cuz power is power, now watch me burn it down”). There are many, many, many “burn it all” references through this album, and while Cersei did use wildfyre on the Sept, Danni’s whole thing is “Fire and Blood” so it just seems inevitable that it’s her burning the Red Keep/King’s Landing.

“I die looking up at your face…Only love could kill me, God bless” Could again fit Cersei (with the theory that Jaime kills her) or Danni (betrayal for Love)

“Heavy is the crown, but never for a queen” Again, both Cersei and Danni, but again the song ends with “Now watch me burn it down”.

Nightshade by The Lumineers

Pretty much about the collective group in the S7 excursion beyond the wall. The second verse is interesting and very specific — about a single rider who saw the Army’s footprints, who swore an oath and with their life would pay, and also mentions “80 miles from home”. Seems like it’s about Benjen who was a rider, a Night’s Watch member, and a Stark from Winterfell (not exactly 80 miles, but I’m assuming that number was more chosen for rhyming purposes).

The 3rd Verse (“We were surrounded and the ending was near, all of the sudden, a ranger arrived, a savior appeared - made it to safety, but the devil was here”) again about Benjen (ranger) arriving to the S7 fight beyond the wall.

Originally I thought the chorus wasn’t really thematically relevant to the rest of the song (each chorus ends with “It was all for the throne”), and it seemed more like a general allusion to the marketing for the season, but also could be that the whole Beyond the Wall excursion was literally only to gain Danni a temporary truce in her perusal of the throne.

Hollow Crown by Ellie Goulding

The song overall is about a House of Cards (“paper castle”, “hollow crown”, all things that are flimsy and won’t last) and again mentions “burn it down”. And again pretty clearly seems like a Cersei & Daenerys song about the other being the fake queen and how it’ll end with Dany burning the Red Keep.

The first verse is all about paranoia (“Is there anyone you trust ‘round here”, “Keep a knife under your pillow”, “You got everyone against you somehow”, “It’s become an obsession, look at your refection, look who you’re becoming right now”): while this could still fit either of them, the “look at who you’re becoming” seems more Danni-relevant as Cersei has always been this way.

Baptize Me by X Ambassadors and Jacob Banks

Perhaps about Theon? A lot of water imagery, mentions of redemption and praying for a savior, but overall of all the songs on the album this one is the most vague and generic country-rock. Maybe I’m being stupid for not getting who this song is about, as it doesn’t even completely fit Theon completely, and just doesn’t sound like any character we know specifically. I’m really not into this song, and ends up just sounding like a guy in our world singing about God instead of a Game of Thrones character.

Too Many Gods by A$AP Rocky & Joey Bada$$

Overall about a lot of wars, a lot of gods, etc. Good song! Definitely specifics about the show (thrones, ravens, etc.) that could be about Jon, but kind of mainly about the futility of war and all the pain it brings. Some interesting single lines:

“It’s just too many laws” - reminds me of Jaime’s “They make you swear and swear” speech.

“Strange screams down the corridors” — Arya running through Winterfell’s halls

“I had a dream I woke up a king in a peasant body” — Jon post-parentage feelings, not feeling like he should be a king?

“Still and silent, writing papers, flying ravens with a message about me” — Anytime I read/see S8 stuff mentioning raven scrolls all I can think of is Sophie Turner saying she was given a raven scroll from S8 as a souvenir, and I want to know what it means. So that is all I can think of with this line.

Turn On Me by The National

Musically, this is my favorite song on the album. Great lyrics, great atmosphere. The lyrics seem to point to the song being about Jon from Danni’s perspective. Starts off about the rhythm of the ocean under the moon (boat!bang), and specifically mentions “And your mother’s angst the day you were born, the day you cut her down” (Lyanna dying in childbirth). For a bit I thought it could be about Tyrion, but the rest of the song is dealing with the betrayal of an intimate relationship which doesn’t really fit with him.

The second verse is a total mystery to me that may be solved in retrospect, but its very poetic (“Do leaves fall in perfect sentences? Do maggots crawl your name?”).

“Do mirrors laugh at you behind your back?” — this is the second reference to mirrors, after the line in “Hollow Crown”

“Does your family think you’re too far gone, do you wonder if they’re right? Are you different than you used to be? Are you alone somewhere tonight?” — Danni & Jon post-parentage. The Starks clearly not interested in Jon taking on a Targaryen identity.

“I’ve gone too high, I’m way too far, I’ve no idea where you are. Will I see you when you turn, when you turn on me? When I turn around will you be there, at the center of the world like you promised to be? Will you suddenly seem like a stranger? I can’t tell anymore what you want from me.” — Again, whatever Jon and Danni had in Dannie’s eyes has been ruined by the reveal, and her worry is that he’ll turn on her.

From the Grave by James Arthur

“crown of roses in your hair”, potentially about Rhaeger and Lyanna? A lot of “I’m far away, but I miss you and want to come back”. Not to mention it’s called “From the Grave” and they’re both dead, and within the song it sounds like the singer is speaking from the grave. Another vague song.

Me Traicionaste (“You Betrayed Me”) by Rosalia

It’s in Spanish so I had to google translate the lyrics, but the sound is very haunting and it’s literally called “You Betrayed Me” HELLO.

“I came to meet you even though I knew, Oh, you designed it, Bye, you betrayed me, Oh, love you do not see it”- Which is straight-up Political!Jon in one stanza. You can squint and see Tyrion or Varys betraying her, but she’s not in love with either of them so seems much less likely.

When I Lie by Lil Peep

“Stick that needle in my eye, just lost my peace of mind, I’m not evil be design, but I feel dead at times”.

“All my friends are really dead, still hear their voices in my head”.

This one is hard to pin down, as the lyrics are very specific but somehow vague at the same time. I’m wondering if “needle” is Arya’s Needle, and potentially this is about Cersei? Or someone else that Arya will kill with Needle? The song uses “lie” as both “not telling the truth” and “laying down”.

Love Can Kill by Lennon Stella

“I wasn’t thinking when I told you to stay, it was just too hard to push you away, you don’t know that you’re in over your head, I’m afraid I’ll push you over the edge” — Another mystery song! The rest of the song is about this relationship that needs to be let go of even though they don’t want to, and how one of them is not safe because of it. 

I thought about it being Danni & Jon, but I don’t think it makes sense. 

The only thing that has already happened in the show that fits the lyrics is actually Tyrion and Shae - him saying he needs her to leave even though he doesn’t want to, her being in danger, the consequence being life or death...but that relationship was a long time ago and doesn’t really feel important enough to merit a song, so who knows.

Wolf at Your Door by Chloe and Halle

Just from the title I immediately though of Jon at Dany’s door on the boat, but this song actually encompasses all of the remaining Starks (though mostly focuses on Arya).

“A wolf creeps softly in the snow, a knife between her teeth she roams, for she is now a stranger” - Arya using her faceless man skills to sneak into the Godswood with the Catspaw Dagger.

“Chasing a fairytale, chasin’ a lie, but everything changes, and everything dies. You preyed on my innocence, tried to bury my name, but now there’ ice in my veins” — Sansa wanting to be a princess in a fairytale that wasn’t real, her family dying, being used by everyone as a pawn, but coming out the other side.

“There’s a wolf at your door, there’s a hound at your heels, there’s a snake in your bed, tell me how does it feel?” — Maybe about Jon — the wolf at your door, and he’s sleeping (or was sleeping) with a “dragon” (might be a stretch to snake, but whatever). Or he’s the snake in someone’s bed?

“When you let the wolves in, you let the wolves in. When you think that it’s over, I swear, we’ll be there” - A Time for Wolves bitches!

“Up from the ashes, run through the fire, Down by the blade that bled us the same” — clearly about the Catspaw Dagger being used against the Starks and then Arya using it to protect them. 

I’m lit by this song’s lyrics.

Pray by Matt Bellamy

This song uses direct clips of Melisandre’s words while bringing Jon back to life in S6, but then the English says “Pray with me, we can bring her back” which…is someone (Dany? Sansa?) else going to die and then be brought back to life? A woman hasn’t been brought back before in the show (as far as I remember) so it’d need to be talking about in future episodes. Color me curious.

Your app for Daniela was really well done and thought out and portrays who she is very well.  I (Tasha) really adore how sophisticated your portrayal of Daniela was. It really showed me exactly what we had envisioned for her. THE INTERVIEW:

So, tell me a little bit about growing up. What was your childhood like?

Daniela looked over at where the sound was coming from, even though she knew very well that she wasn’t going to see a person, it was only the E.R.I.S. talking. She wasn’t sure what she was expecting. She knew that it wasn’t going to be a horrible thing, nobody was going to use cross-questioning techniques on her or anything, but still, she was sure topics she wasn’t so comfortable talking about were going to come up, and she wasn’t looking forward to them.

But childhood she could do. At least they were not really jumping right into it just yet.

“I guess it wasn’t that special, it was like any normal kids’ childhood. I played a lot with toy cars, I was never really a fan of dolls, and after a beheaded one when I was four my parents stopped buying them for me. Played a lot with my sister, some with the kids living in the neighborhood. Tried to stay out longer than curfew.“ She scratched a spot on her leg in an awkward motion. She wasn’t really sure what she was saying was good or enough or even what they were expecting.

“If you want to know if I was affected by what was going on in the world - I am sure I was, but as a child, I didn’t realize or notice anything that wasn’t normal. Probably because the wrong was the norm for me, but still. I only noticed things weren’t right when I got older, maybe around 9-10.”

What about your relationship with your family?

“I have amazing parents, and I had a pretty good relationship with them while…” Dani started answering the question and the cold truth only hit her in the middle of the sentence. The fact that she couldn’t say “I have parents” anymore. Not since she came through the portal with Nora and their parents didn’t make it.

She reached for the glass of water that was on the desk in front of her and she took a big gulp from it. The water was way too warm for her taste, but at least it gave her something to do while she tried to gather herself. She could see her hands shake as she lowered the glass from her lips and she was extremely glad the E.R.I.S. was conducting the interview and not an actual person who would have heard the change in her voice when the truth hit her all over again, seen the shake in her hand, the way emotions overtook her, and it wasn’t something she wanted anyone to see.

“As– as I was saying,“ she started up again after she cleared her throat and put the glass back down onto the desk, her hands now rubbing her legs in a mindless motion. “I had a pretty good relationship with them. Dad was amazing, my stepmom always treated me and loved me like I was her own.” Which only made her weird, conflicted feelings towards her when she was a teenager that much worse. Dani knew that by any means she was her mother, but her teenage years was the period when it truly hit her that her birth mother was dead and she was not her mother by blood, and she hated herself for it, and she also felt burning blame and shame and guilt for her birth mother not being alive anymore. It was really not a good time period for her and it was something she had to work out herself, but it still filled her with shame when she thought back to the things that crossed her mind.

“And my sister,” she continued, shaking herself out of the thought spiral she found herself in, “was everything to me since the moment she was born. She was such a tiny little thing, I couldn’t not love her, and that stayed like that ever since. She’s a ray of sunshine and I am… well, I am just me, but we click. That is the easiest way to describe our relationship.“

Are you the only Nova in your family? Or were your parents Novas too? What about any siblings?

“Wasn’t the only one, no. Dad and Nora are both Novas– or, dad was a Nora still is, sorry,” she corrected herself quickly, her words faltering for the slightest of seconds. She stopped and waited until the shaking of her hands disappeared before she continued with a forced, completely fake calm in her voice. “And from what he told me about my birth mother, she belonged to the Latens, so she was a Nova as well.”

What’s your ability like? Is it easy to control or harder? Do you even like it?

Dani let out a small chuckle. “A pretty good one in my opinion. It’s kind of subtle, though - can’t make flashy things or disappear or anything, but it’s perfect like that. It is so subtle, though, that for the longest time I didn’t even think I had a power, thought I was a Laten like my birth mother. I think I was around 13 or 14 when I realized it was more than just a really good memory.” She saw a report that was left out on the kitchen table, and she could recite it to her dad word for word after only quickly reading through it once out of curiosity.

How would you describe your personality?

Socially awkward potato who has no idea how to talk to people so she comes across as either way too much or disappears in the crowd. Not that she was going to say that and actually admit it out loud.

“How would I describe my personality…“ she repeated back the question, mulling over every word, trying to think of the best way to answer the question. “On my best days, I’d say I am a confident and strong person. On my worst days…“ Where to even begin? The awkwardness, the inability to properly communicate or form lasting bonds with 99.9% of the people, the grumpiness, the constant guilt over things she couldn’t possibly change anymore, or the crippling fear and cowardice that comes out at the worst possible moments.

“Let’s just not talk about what I am like on my worst days.“

What do you think your greatest strengths and weaknesses are?

“My greatest strength - I’d say they are brain and my technological abilities,“ Dani replied almost immediately. Her brain and her memory might have been so good because of her power, but that didn’t change the fact that whatever she read, whatever she saw or experienced, she remembered. It was such asset she couldn’t just ignore. And her technological abilities have been an even better asset. She could still remember how amazing it felt to hack into the first system back when she was only ten, and now at the age of 24, she could pretty much hack into anything, write any kind of program and there was barely any challenge or barrier she couldn’t break on the computer.

“As for my weakness…“ she started, letting out a small sigh and looking down onto her lap for a second. “my power.” Ehh, almost. “It is a blessing, but at the same time, just like I can’t forget any important stuff, I also can’t forget the bad things. They keep me up at night.“ Which was true, all of it. The image of her sister being taken away, the last glimpses of her parents before they were shoved through the portal, some random flashes she can remember clearly from her time on the run were all stuck in her head, and she saw them each time she closed her eyes, but her greatest weakness was related to them, not them exactly.

It was the cowardice that showed its face each time she was in any kind of danger. The need to save herself over anyone else was the worst of her, and she was afraid when it would appear again, when would it cripple her so much she couldn’t do anything about it.

Where and what were you doing the day the Nova Protection Act was enacted?

Dani knew the question was coming. Hypothetically, you couldn’t possibly have an interview like this without asking about the events of the last couple of years. It was on everyone’s mind, it was part of everyone’s story, and it was both their pasts and their presents at this point. Of course, the E.R.I.S. was going to get to it sooner or later.

Still, Dani’s posture stiffened, her back straightened and for a couple of seconds, she wasn’t sure what to say, where to even begin. Because unlike most people, the nightmare of being on the run didn’t start with the Nova Protection Act, it started months before, when out of nowhere, their parents disappeared. And then they came for her sister and her too, and up until this day she is haunted by the image of her sister being taken away while she did nothing to stop it. She was never going to be able to forget it, and she was going to live with the guilt for the rest of her life, she was sure.

“I think I was…“ she started, wringing her hand without even realizing it, as she was trying to get the image of her sister being carried away out of her mind. “I was somewhere on the move already. Not really sure what happened with me on that exact day, things are kind of blurry from that time period, but a couple of days after it was enacted, I got to this small town. It was completely raided, that is when I started suspecting that something was up.“

Did you immediately run? Or did you try to obey the law and report to the Anti-Nova Force?

“Like I said before, I was already on the run at that point,“ she said, realizing what she was doing with her hands and forcefully stopped herself. Whenever she was anxious or worried, she had to do something with her hands, whether it be playing with her hair, wringing her hands, rubbing her hands on her legs, something, anything. “Obeying the law wasn’t an option, not after my parents and my sister, but even if none of that happened, I don’t think I would have gone to the Anti-Nova Force. Anyone remembers what happened when the Nazis took over? Yeah, wouldn’t have wanted end like so many people did back then.“

How have you survived this last year and a half or so? Did you have any help or were you all alone? How did you find Yalena’s Sanctuary?

“I… I am honestly not so sure how I survived,“ Dani admitted after a few moments of silence. Thinking back on those few months alone, it blurs together so much, she couldn’t possibly recall how she got herself food or how she managed to dodge everyone. She turned something off in herself during those days and even up until today there are periods which are completely blank for her. Though it was probably for the better. Dani wasn’t sure how this was even possible with her power, but she was glad it was. She remembered enough terrible things way too vividly already if she never had to add anything new to the list, it was already way too much she had to go through.

“I just– got lucky, I guess. Can’t see any other way for me to survive all on my own. And after a few weeks of realizing the Act was enacted, I ran into a couple who were also on the run. They heard about Yalena’s Sanctuary, and I tagged along to them. We reached the place in a couple of days. So, I guess, once again, luck was on my side.“

Though mostly she considered herself lucky that a couple of months after she arrived to Yalena’s, her parents turned up, and a couple of weeks before the raid, her sister arrived as well. Not a lot of people were so lucky - to get separated, and then find each other like this.

What were you doing when the raid happened? How did you respond to the flood of Wardens? How quickly did you go through Yalena’s portal?

“When the raid happened? I– well, I was hacking into a government system at a time, and at first I didn’t even know what to do.“ Lie. She remembered the first thought that crossed her mind when she realized what was happening - run. Not where is her sister or her parents, not help save the others, no, it was run. The coward inside of her showed itself once again.

And then in just a few seconds, so many other things have run through her head, but the most important thing was that she couldn’t possibly make the same mistake again. She wasn’t going to let her sister or her parents get hurt or taken again, while she was doing nothing. While she was only watching.

“And then I quickly went to look for my family. I found my sister pretty quickly, and we wanted to get to our parents too. We were really close to the portal when we found them, actually. Mom was injured and dad was heading towards her to help her, and I think Nora and I both moved towards them at the same time. We were apart for so long, we didn’t want to get separated again. But the crowd was so big, we were shoved through the portal before we could get to them and then– well, it got closed off moments after we got through. Only a couple of people could come over after us.“

And none of them were their parents, she added in her thoughts.

What has living in The Imperium been like for you? Do you feel safer than before? Is it better or worse than on the run, or Yalena’s Sanctuary?

“It definitely beats being on the run,“ Dani said with a cold, bitter chuckle escaping her lips. Anything beat being on the run. “And it’s not so bad here, it definitely could be a lot worse. But to feel safe here? After what happened, I don’t think I could feel safe anywhere.“

She made the mistake to let her guards down at Yalena’s Sanctuary. She actually felt safe there. Thought they couldn’t have possibly found them there. But that clearly wasn’t the case, so why would this place, the Imperium, be any different?

The last question. If war broke out between Novas and the humans, which side will you be on?

Dani burst into laughter. Loud, real, unstoppable laughter. It took her a couple of seconds to realize that there wasn’t a person sitting across from her laughing along with her, and the E.R.I.S. didn’t make jokes. It sobered her some, her laugh dying, her features turning baffled. “Oh,” she whispered, “you are serious about this one. Sounded like one big, fat joke, no offense.”

She shifted in her seat, her posture straightening, and crossed her legs as she tried to get over the fact that whoever thought this question was a good idea must have lost their mind. Which side she would be on? Have they been paying attention to what’s been happening in the past couple of years? Decades? Ever since humans became aware of the Novas existence? Or did they forget the fact that they were literally on the run from the humans who killed so many of their friends and family? That they barely escaped alive as it is?

Fucking hell, how could they even ask this question and mean it?

“Look, not really sure what you expect me to say. They are putting us into camps, segregating us and murdering us every chance they get. Just because we are different. Because they don’t understand us, because they fear us. And I could keep going with their dumb reasonings. So yeah, there is no option here. I am on the side that doesn’t want me dead just because I am me. I am on the side that accepts me for who I am.“

CONNECTIONS:

I am extremely excited about the sister relationship. I am always fan of sibling/any kind of family relationships, and Dani and Nora are as close as siblings can be, and the added element of Nora letting herself get captured just to save Dani is such an interesting part, I think I am going to have so much fun playing them out.

I am also really excited about the relationship with Cepheus too. Dani is really not good with people and she is definitely not the kind of person who lets too many people close to her, and to have that kind of close and strong friendship is something I am extremely excited to delve deeper into.

I am up for any kind of connection, but what I really want to have is somebody who pushes Dani to her limits while also making her accept that she can let go of the guilt and the past because that would be what she truly needs.

HEADCANONS:

Dani has a tattoo on the inner side of her left upper arm. The tattoo itself looks like this, only the numbers in the middle are different - the date she left her sister behind is written there. She got that tattoo the first chance she got after what happened that day to always remind herself of her sister, of the horrible mistake she made and the vow that she was going to save her sister no matter what, and once they were together again, she was going to be the big sister Nora always deserved and truly protect her, no matter what.

When dressing, Dani mostly goes for comfort over style. She prefers oversized sweaters and leggings. She only wore skirts when she was forced into them, she is not too big of a fan of jeans but she puts up with them, and before she had to run, she had a full collection of boots and scarfs. Now she doesn’t really have anything aside from a couple of sweaters and leggings, and more than ever the comfort wins over anything - if she has to run again, she doesn’t want her clothes being too tight or too itchy or any other reason to be what slows her down.

She had one serious relationship before, when she was 16. The girl was two years older and they were together for almost a whole year. Before that she strongly thought she was asexual - everyone made sex into a big deal but she didn’t intrigue her and she never felt anything sexual before her. That changed when they got emotionally closer, and she realized she was demisexual. They broke things off because they wanted different things and it broke Dani’s heart, and she hasn’t felt anything like that ever since.

I just want to say that all of my family/sister headcanons in the app is coordinated with my friend, El’s version of Nora. She is sending her app in for her sometime later and we thought it would be good to work things out before we wrote the apps so there aren’t things that contradict each other.
