[ Despite Newgate’s love for all of his sons and daughters, Ace was special and he was favoured. Yes Newgate strongly believed that blood doesn’t matter, however when it came to Roger, the Will of D, and the One Piece, Newgate was prepared to place Ace in a position the boy had never asked for. Newgate recognized that the One Piece was something bigger than him or Ace, or anyone else.
When a rookie came onto the scene bearing a striking resemblance to a youthful Roger, had the name of D. as well as the same name as the Supreme Grade blade Roger wielded, Newgate’s intuition told him the truth immediately. He kept an eye on the rookie until he entered the New World and that was when Newgate made his move. After meeting Ace in person and seeing his character, so similar to Roger’s, that was the moment Newgate had decided to help carry on Roger’s legacy for him.
Newgate knew that he himself was too old. He knew that he wouldn’t be the one to become Pirate King or claim the One Piece because Roger had already told him the truth about D. Beyond that Newgate had a deep respect and bond with Roger, and so he felt that if any person should become Pirate King it should be his son.
His intention was to mentor Ace and allow him to grow into a good leader that would be able to replace him when he died. Newgate knew his end was soon approaching and so he didn’t have much time. He fast-tracked Ace into the position of Commander, the same one that had been untouched since Oden left the crew over twenty years ago. Before everything descended into chaos with Thatch’s death, Newgate had been laying down the foundations to make Ace the Pirate King. He had let Marco in on his plans as well and had asked him to guide Ace in the future.
With all this in mind I still want to say that Newgate did come to love Ace as his own son. He loved Ace dearly and as a separate person of Roger. This is just to explain that it was his bond with Roger that pushed Newgate towards taking Ace under his wing in the first place. ]
