Content: Ling Yao x f!Reader
Warnings: Abusive family, abusive fiance (?), heavy misogyny (not Ling tho we love him and he loves women), loveless arranged marriage
Notes: Pulled an entire kingdom out of my ass for this, and a character, since FMA:B doesn't have another kingdom lol but I absolutely love a Romeo/Juliet trope, so it was worth it. I also might make this a series if this post gets too long lol. LOOK I KNOW FMA:B HAS CARS BUT I WANT AN EXCUSE TO WRITE MEDIEVAL SHIT SO CARRIAGES WE GO
Info on the kingdom: Mashul (ma-SHOO-ul) is based on Great Britain. The men are cherished while the women are seen as "peace negotiations" and often married off to other countries to keep Mashul out of any kind of conflict. You're the first princess to be married off to Xing, though, a place that is far different than your home.

Being a princess of Mashul meant nothing. At least, to you. All it was was a title, nothing more. Yes, you got to sleep in a warm bed and have full meals, but you'd rather swap for the streets if that meant you no longer had to face any verbal degradation from your mother or physical abuse from your father, should you decide to disobey.
A princess who is a soon-to-be-wife should follow her husband no matter what. You didn't even want to get married. You didn't know what kind of man you'd be spending the rest of your life with. You had long since stopped believing in the happy ending fairytales, especially ones where princesses got to have a happy marriage. By custom you were given a picture and a name of your new fiance, nothing more.
Cai Shi was his name. He was the thirteenth son of the Xingese emperor, not exactly first for the throne. He seemed like a firm man from the photo alone. Toned stature, pronounced jawline, slim eyes, short, jet black hair, with spiky bangs that barely cross over his forehead. He was undoubtedly handsome, but looks only go so far.
The thin frown on his lips reminded her of the one her mother wore after leaving her father's room, or the same frown her father would wear if she spoke without permission. If it wasn't for her teacher growing up, she would have thought that this was a normal family.
She could only hope that Cai Shi could prove her initial thoughts wrong.

Cai Shi wasn't much of a talker, but he was a very strict man. Helping you out of the carriage was possibly the only nice thing he could do. As soon as you touched the ground and looked up at him, he turned and began to talk. Confused, you kept to your place.
Cai stopped walking, then turned to look at you. "What're you doing? Let's go."
"O-oh, okay." You nodded, rushing to his side, hoping to link arms with him.
Cai visibly flinched. "What do you think you're doing?"
"I-I just thought we could walk togeth-"
"I don't know how they do it over in Mashul, but in Xing, the wives walk behind the husbands. Now come, I'll show you to your room." Cai then turned and stomped off, expecting you to follow him.
You didn't know what you were expecting. But, with a surprisingly heavy heart, you obeyed and followed. Four women followed behind you two in different colored robes, you assumed they were maids. The palace in Xing was beautiful, even if it harbored Cai Shi. You just hoped that not all of the men in the palace were like this.
Going into a room in one of the palace buildings, Cai stopped abruptly. "This is your room. Maids, get her ready for the banquet tonight."
The maids slightly bent their knees in a courtsey, mumbling a yes before moving around the room. You looked around for a moment before looking back at Cai.
"What's going on?"
"The maids will dress you up in Xing clothing and do a quick schooling of Xing customs to prepare for the banquet tonight." Cai spoke in a monotone voice, then turned to leave.
"Wait, where are you going?"
"I'm going to visit my father. I will see you tonight. Maids, make her pretty." Cai took a sweeping look up and down your figure before leaving.
"Yes, Prince." The maids said before ushering you behind a curtain.
"But..." Your voice trailed off, frowning.
It's even more clear that those fairytales told to children, even to yourself at a point, weren't true. The maids were nicer than Cai Shi's words, which you had realized the sort of distanced, venomous tone your father had when he spoke to you.
You were doomed to be treated less than human your entire life.

That night, at the banquet, you were surprised to find so many people in the grand hall. Music filled the vast room, dancing girls twirled about in the middle, and the people were either intently watching the girls or talking happily to one another. The servants escorted you to a seat next to Cai, who barely gave you a glance. You sat on your knees, hands clasped in your lap.
"Do I look pretty?" You asked with a small smile, hoping to please him, even if it was a little.
Cai finally raked his angered gaze over you. Seeing you dressed in Xing clothing, jewelry and makeup instead of Mashul's had, admittedly, made his cold heart stop a beat. His lips slightly parted in his slience, and your smile began to drop.
Clearing his throat, Cai nods. "Yes, you do."
"Who're all these people?" You asked.
Cai looked around before looking back at you. "The princes and princesses you see around me are all my siblings. On the other end is father's imperial court."
You looked around. Some people sitting amongst the Xingese princes and princesses seemed foreign, though the foreign people were mainly women. Turning to Cai again, you asked, "Just how many siblings do you have?"
"Fourty-one." Cai answered simply, before going to take a drink that the servant had set down gently.
You almost choked on your spit. Looking up, the Xingese emperor sat on his throne, the empress sitting on his left.
"F-fourty-one? Your poor mother..."
"Foolish woman." Cai immediately goes back to a harsh tone. "Did the maids not tell you the marital structure in the palace? We all have different mothers. Father has to marry one woman from every clan in Xing and produce an heir. His first wife is the empress. Everyone else are concubines."
Processing this new information, your eyes remained on the empress. She was pretty, possibly the epitome of beauty in Xing. Maybe she'd even be the epitome of beauty in Mashul. Her royal robes complimented her eyes and fair skin tone, the jewelry donning her neck and head highlighting some finer details of her neck and face.
The Empress was so beautiful, why did the Emperor feel the need to take other wives? "The Empress must feel sad that your father took other wives."
"Hardly. That's custom."
"We don't do that in Mashul..." You mumbled.
"This isn't Mashul." Cai smacked the now empty cup against his table, glaring at you from the corner of his eye. "Don't talk about political affairs. That isn't your place to debate."
"I can't say what we did back home?" You questioned.
"Mashul is no longer your home. Xing is. Talking about Mashul now is a political affair, and women are forbidden from talking about that."
Casting a glance towards the imperial court, you noticed a couple women in there. "Then how come there are women in the imperial court?"
"They are nothing but father's playthings. Don't listen to anything else otherwise." Cai sneered.
Tensing again, you finally kept your eyes to your table. Only then did you notice that you had a drink of your own. Gently taking it and eyeing other women around you, you took a sip. Humming in delight, you sported a small smile.
"Is it to the princesses' satisfaction?" A servant bent down to ask, ready to refill Cai's drink as well.
"Yes, thank you." You smiled, making the servant stop for a moment before hesitantly nodding and filling up Cai's up.
Then, the Emperor put his hand up, causing the dancing ladies and music and talking to stop. He swept his gaze across the crowd.
"Where is Ling?" The Emperor asked. "He's late, again."
A prince gave a small bow in respect to his father before speaking. "Brother is dealing with some bandits found outside of Xing territory. He'll be here soon."
The Emperor clicked his tongue. "Yu Jiayi, you're always covering for Ling Yao. If there really were bandits, the imperial court would have notified me."
Yu nodded. "It was a last minute development, father. I promise."
The Emperor turned to his Imperial court, before clicking his tongue again. "Regardless, the banquet shall start without him then. We'll begin by welcom-"
A young prince burst into the grand hall. He panted, placing his hands on his knees for a moment. His hair was longer than Cai's, so long that it had to be put in a ponytail. While his hair was frazzled, you could tell that the right side hung out over his forehead in the form of spiky bangs. A lot of the princes and princesses had spiky hair.
"Ling, where have you been my boy?" The Emperor asked.
"Sorry! I was," he panted. "chasing off bandits!"
He then looked up. His face was covered in dirt, chest and sleeves scratched up, with a full view of his torso undeneath his yellow jacket. He finally gained his breath before looking around. "Now, where is the newcomer?"
"Men, clean up prince Ling the best you can right now, and escort him to his seat." The Emperor waved his hand.
Three servants bowed and nodded before escorting the prince, cleaning off his face with a wet rag the whole way. The Emperor sighed before resuming.
"As I was saying, we'll start by welcoming the newest addition to our family. In a month's time, my son Cai Shi, from the Shi clan, is to wed the princess from Mashul, (Y/n) (L/n)."
Everyone followed where his hand pointed towards your seated form. Your face heated up at having all eyes on you, all smiles, and people began to clap. You took a glance at Cai Shi, who was glaring at the table. He didn't seem happy at all. As everyone continued to clap, you gave a small smile, trying to show your appreciation.
Ling was sat a little bit away from the new couple, but he could still clearly see you. Your features glowed from the light streaming into the grand hall. He could see his older brothers' disdain. Ling didn't understand - if he had such a beautiful woman like you, he'd be overjoyed! Why was Cai so sour faced?
Ling didn't pay attention as his father continued talking once the clapping had died down. Instead, he was more focused on this new woman's expressions and looks.
You, feeling someone staring, turned slowly to look over your shoulder. Your eyes met with Ling's. Something happened in your chests - both of your hearts sped up, warmth spread through them. Before you were caught staring by anyone else, you turned back to stare at your table until you cooled off enough to look back at the Emperor. Ling however, he didn't stop staring.
Now that you've made eye contact, and made Ling feel such strong emotions, he isn't going to easily let that go. His brother didn't seem to like you, so maybe he can fill in for him. Keeping his smile to himself, he slowly drank out of the cup a servant gave him, plotting in his mind.

When Eclair first gained awareness, he was pretty upset at first.
All of the history he documented was.. fake? All part of a story?
He's pretty miffed.
But not so much when he finds about you, the Baker.
He's sort of so-so about you at first. He's doesn't hate you, but he doesn't like you either.
Until you end up pulling him.
One moment, he's in his museum greeting the Cookies, the next, he's in the Cookie Kingdom!
Just about had a heart attack when that happened, ngl.
He was so out of it for a while. Just wandering around, not sure what to do. He ended up talking to Pure Vanilla Cookie.
(Eclair was surprised that the Ancient Cookie was even there to BEGIN with.)
There, Pure Vanilla shed some light on the situation; the Baker summoned them and now they must help out the Baker!
Eclair was.. pretty apprehensive to this, mostly because he knew nothing about you. But he decided to roll with it.
As time went one, the historian slowly became more and more obsessed with you. Especially once he heard your voice for the first time.
"Holy crap! Eclair does so much damage when you build him right! So keeping him on the team."
That comment made a warm, fuzzy feeling in his chest. It felt so.. good to have your praise.
After this, Eclair became infatuated with you. He had to know more about you, he HAD too.
So, he did what he does best, and began to look through history and look for texts about you.
He found very few, mostly coming from the Ancients times. But.. he didn't want to ask them about you. He wanted to keep his research to himself.
Eclair began to document anything he could about you. Mostly for himself, but incase you ever came around, he wanted to show you just how dedicated he was!
Surely you'd be thrilled with how much he knows about you. After all, you constantly talked about how much you adored his love for history, so you'd definitely adore how much of your history he knows!
Hopefully Eclair will get to see, or even meet, you soon..
