It's the dawn of 2024 and I'm playing Neko Atsume - a dedication. This may be cringe, but I am free

I've played this game before, like most people, back when it was a big hit of a game despite it's semplicity. You place down food and kitties come to eat and play in your yard, returning the favour by gifting you some silver/gold fishes; as simple as that. You can't interact with them besides taking a picture or two, but it's great to know they like you back/trust you enough to hand to you - eventually - a memento, a little thing from them, a gift to you as thank you for taking care of them.

I haven't touched this game since the first years of high school, and I'm over 20+ now... I returned to Neko Atsume a month or so ago after watching a VR clip adaptation of this game and genuinely laughed at how funny the cats' faces looked up close, so oval and silly, quickly becoming one of my favourite type of memey pictures.

I mean, look at this face and tell me it's not hilarious

I downloaded the game again and it made me feel warm and comforted in a period of my life where I'm not at my 100%, but slowly healing.

I recently read an article written by someone who felt the same wave of comfort, saying "you can't let down your cats in Neko Atsume; you can only make them happier" and hit close to home: you can go on for days without placing down food in the bowls and the cats simply do not show up, they are elsewhere having fun and doing kitty stuff - perhaps even chilling in a different yard; there's not a worry about leaving them alone like with Nintendogs or Animal Crossing where guilt washes over you whenever you remember you left your dogs and villagers alone for a long time, because I know the cats in Neko Atsume are off doing something else where my eyes cannot reach and they are doing fine without me.

It's comforting to know whenever I'll open the game, it's granted that I'd see the cats hanging out in the yard - or even just scrolling through the gift list of cats that visited while I wasn't looking makes me equally happy. It's a weird way to find comfort considering the game doesn't do much besides checking it every now and then, but I'm glad it is cheering me up regardless. I sometimes watch the VR livestream as well, as background for when I draw or just chill.

I've grown more loyal to my few games I own, like Cookie Run and Sky:COTL, jumping from active periods and hiatuses depending on the updates of the games themselves and how much I felt like playing, and I know eventually I'll depart from Neko Atsume again like in the past, but me being myself, I'll return to them just like I did recently.

I joke with friends saying I've spiralled in the game (which is true lol), but it's also true this game brings me a lot of joy. So, for how weird it may sound (but do bear with me lol I needed to get this out of my chest somewhere), these silly virtual cats do make me happy and I hope I'll continue playing this game for a long time, even when I'll no longer need to be comforted.

But even so, if I were to quit at one point, I'll return.
