State trooper shot in eye by suspected mass shooter returns home MADISONVILLE, Texas (KTRK) — A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper who was wounded while trying to apprehend a suspected mass shooter in Bryan, Texas, last week received a hero’s welcome home. Trooper Juan Tovar was shot in the eye while trying to apprehend suspect Larry Bollin on April 8 after Bollin opened fire at Kent Moore Cabinets, killing one person and injuring five others, including Tovar. According to a fundraiser for Tovar on the Help A Hero website, his vehicle was struck by bullets 13 times as he tried to return fire on the suspect. After undergoing surgery and being released from the hospital on Wednesday, Tovar was welcomed back to Madisonville, where he’s a resident, in a drive-by parade. “It gives me chills to think we almost lost one of our own, and I’m thankful that he’s still here with us,” longtime friend Kathy Simpson told KBTX. DPS said in a tweet that although Tovar is out of the hospital he still has many challenges ahead. Trooper Tovar has been released from the hospital. Um tiroteio em uma loja de móveis na cidade de Bryan, no Texas, deixou uma pessoa morta e seis feridas, incluindo um militar, nesta quinta-feira, 8. O autor dos disparos foi identificado como sendo Larry Bollin, que tem 27 anos e trabalhava no local, mas a sua motivação para o crime ainda não foi confirmada. Ele trocou tiros com a polícia antes de ser preso sob a acusação de assassinato. Os agentes encontraram uma vítima morta e cinco indivíduos baleados e feridos dentro da loja, sendo que quatro tiveram que ser levados ao hospital em estado crítico. Uma sexta pessoa teve que receber atendimento médico devido a um ataque de asma. Além disso, um policial foi baleado enquanto perseguia o suspeito.
O tiroteio aconteceu no mesmo dia em que o presidente dos Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, anunciou uma série de ações executivas que dificultam o acesso às chamadas “armas fantasma”, que por serem fabricadas de maneira caseira, não possuem números de série que permitem que elas sejam rastreadas. Além disso, o democrata lançou incentivos para os estados removerem a permissão de porte de armas a pessoas que representem um risco para si mesmas e para a sociedade, anunciou um acompanhamento maior sobre o tráfico de armas de fogo e lançou investimentos em programas de intervenção em comunidades que tenham altos índices de violência.
As medidas estão relacionadas à onda de tiroteios em massa, ou seja, que resultam em quatro ou mais vítimas, no país. Antes do incidente no Texas, houve nove incidentes desse tipo nos Estados Unidos só no último mês. “A violência armada neste país é uma epidemia e um constrangimento nacional”, argumentou Biden em pronunciamento nesta quinta-feira, 8. “O trabalho de qualquer presidente é proteger o povo americano, quer o Congresso aja ou não. Vou usar todos os recursos à minha disposição para manter o povo americano protegido da violência armada. Mas há muito mais que o Congresso pode fazer para ajudar nesse esforço”, completou.
