[the implication is that Flannery is somehow taking orders from China, though Flannery says "the company is controlled by US nationals and that 97% of its invested capital is from American investors while the rest is from British and Irish sources"]
Nearly $1 billion has been spent on land purchases, and few details are known about the buyer. The mystery has been growing by the day and by the acre. Now it's getting the attention of the U.S. military and the FBI.[...]
"As you can see from this map, here's Rio Vista, and here are all these parcels around the city. And it's very disconcerting to us, because our future is gonna be very dependent upon what they decide to do with all these purchases. ["...]
"First of all, they're paying way above market," said the mayor. "And it makes it hard for these guys to ignore the money."[…]
KPIX spoke with several property owners who did sell to Flannery and did not want to appear on television. They all told a pretty simple story: they were offered a good price, with good terms, by folks who appeared to them to be fine people.[...]
"40 years ago, if people bought land in orchards in San Jose and Santa Clara, it would be worth a bloody fortune today," said Kott
Damn seems like the solution to this is to take land sales off of the private market! Surely that's gonna be what they do in response to this. Right? Right???[31 Jul 23]

OAKLAND -- Oakland nonprofits are banding together to call attention to a problem which they say is often ignored, that of the growing number of Black girls and young women being targeted by kidnappers.
Over a dozen organizations in Oakland have called their own state of emergency. The groups claim there have been 10 attempted kidnappings in the past month, although Oakland Police would not confirm that.
Lon'ja Mustafa, a 16-year-old student who lives in Oakland, says she walks to the bus everyday in fear of being abducted.
"I get scared that one day it may happen to me," said Mustafa.
She says when a Black girl goes missing, it is not always talked about.
"Plenty of times it has never hit the news or social media," she said. "I heard it from my friends one time when my own family member went missing."
Mustafa is not alone with her concerns. The nonprofit, Love Never Fail Us, is sounding the alarm, too.
"A group of about 27 or so nonprofits gathered last week to come up with a game plan to address actual kidnappings and attempted kidnappings that have been happening to Black girls in the community," said Vanessa Russell, founder of Love Never Fails Us.
KPIX reached out to the Oakland Police Department regarding the public's concern of the missing Black girls and young women. The department responded with the following statement:
"The City of Oakland has not declared a state of emergency about Oakland kidnappings, although community members may have.
Unfortunately, many cases of kidnapping or attempted kidnapping go unreported all across the country. If you or someone you know is a victim, we ask that you contact the Oakland Police Department (OPD) Special Victims Section at 510-238-3641."
Community leaders are looking to do more and are hoping to use tools like the proposed Ebony Alert System, a bill introduced by Southern California state Sen. Steven Bradford (D-Carson).
The system would operate like an Amber Alert and solely used for missing Black women or children ages 12 through 25.
Mustafa had this to say about the possible new alert system.
"I feel very relieved and like a huge weight coming off of my shoulders."

SAN FRANCISCO -- Concerned about the safety of their employees, Whole Foods officials have confirmed to KPIX the company was at least temporarily closing their store at 8th and Market streets in San Francisco.
Monday was the last day at the store for the time being. The 64,000-square foot store nestled in the city's mid-Market neighborhood open just a year ago to much fanfare.
"To ensure the safety of our Team Members, we have made the difficult decision to close the Trinity store for the time being," store officials said in an email. "All Team Members will be transferred to one of our nearby locations."
The closure came as a shock to local residents like Jennifer Wu, who lives across the street from the store.
"I do remember life before this Whole Foods opening," she said. "What that meant was I would have to drive down to the other Whole Foods... I mean we are bummed and it was shocking because I found out literally today that they are closing."
Wu said that she never felt unsafe shopping, but has witnessed disturbances that were quickly handled by the store's staff.
"They were touting this as the largest Whole Foods in the city and for that to close down I think its a sign that something needs to be done," she said.  "It's a loss for this neighborhood. A year ago when they opened it was promising and hopeful that there would be change."
San Francisco Supervisor Matt Dorsey, who represents the neighborhood, blamed the crime on a lack of police officers.
He is working on an initiative to get the SFPD fully staff over the next five years.
"It's heartbreaking to see it close," Dorsey said. "But I'll tell you it's not that surprising. I'm really sadden by it."

#RudyTuesday KPIX signed on the air on December 22, 1948, the first television station in Northern California as well as the 49th in the United States. Initially, channel 5's signal was transmitted from the top of the Mark Hopkins Hotel on Nob Hill. KPIX's first master control room was in the attic of the hotel (just above the "Top of the Mark" bar).
The station immediately joined CBS but also carried programming from DuMont until that network folded in 1956. It even carried programs from the short-lived Paramount Television Network, such as Frosty Frolics, Time For Beany, Cowboy G-Men and Bandstand Revue.
