Since that old “Homestuck Tips for First Time Readers” post of mine surfaces again every 4/13 I feel like I need to clarify:

Acts 1 and 2 are funny, the Exiles are funny, the Midnight Crew is funny, and all are important to the overarching plot, but on your first read they are a slog

Point-and-click adventure game jokes don’t land when you aren’t very familiar with that medium and/or don’t have any nostalgia or fondness related to point-and-click games, text-based adventure jokes and old programming language jokes don’t land for the same reason

The Midnight Crew is I think (and you can correct me if I’m wrong but don’t be a dick about it) one giant Problem Sleuth callback, which isn’t funny if you haven’t read Problem Sleuth, and comes at a time when you’re just starting to get invested in the 4 kids, so the focus of your interest in this comic that is longer than most seminal literary works is suddenly gone and you’re back to square one, wondering why you should give a shit about this random gangster time travel plot when there was cooler stuff happening back with the humans

The Exiles are much the same way, but they interact with the 4 kids (in)directly so the flow of interest is at least there

It’s a bit like starting a new MMO with a level one character, and all your friends are level 100 and way further in the game than you are. Sure, they’ll help you progress so you can catch up to them, and that might shave a few hours off, but you still have to grind out 100 goddamn levels and however much content that represents before you can start having fun with your friends

Maybe you like that, maybe grinds are your thing, or maybe you’re just interested enough in the story you don’t want to buy a level boost to skip to the end, but that doesn’t change the fact that you’re in for a grind and it’s okay to be frustrated by that, even if you come back later and replay the parts you really did like

Say what you will about “everyone clapped” stories but real life is honestly that bizarre sometimes

A handful of true stories from my life:

I was attacked by a barnacle in Lake Erie and have the scar on my knee to prove it

I was briefly stolen and held hostage by a librarian to teach my older sister a lesson

Every adult in my family personally knows at least one murderer (not well, but on a first name basis), important to note nobody knows the same murderer

My sister nearly scammed the Jerry Springer show in high school into letting her appear and got as far as the showrunners asking to see a valid American driver’s license for ID before she ghosted them

Older people I’ve never met and will never see again routinely stop me on the street to tell me about their medical problems

Like sometimes life is weird. Not all weird stories are automatically fake

To date I think the smartest thing I ever did was when I went on a school trip to Ireland back in like 2012, I didn’t own a camera except for the one in my slide phone, so I popped out the sim card and left it at home so I could use the camera without roaming charges

I thought there was a clean-up option in the renovation app? It should put plants and stuff in your immediate vicinity in the recycling

The cleanup option deletes trees and doesn’t touch flowers so it’s less than ideal
