On the topic of ‘bad mascot horror video games for kids’ the exception to the rule (or rather, something that understood the assignment) would be My Friendly Neighborhood.
I don’t want to spoil anything if you haven’t booted up the game before, but just…don’t be fooled by jumpscare compilations or the character design. From the opening cutscene this game grabs you by the fucking throat. The mechanics have thought put into them, the voice acting is top notch, and christ the fucking story - a complete story, one that has an end that isn’t promised in future ‘chapters’ or left ambiguous.
Yes, it has jumpscares from goofy muppet monsters, but they’re not cheap tricks. Once you learn how the game works they’re easy to avoid or at the very least anticipate - not to mention they’re survivable with the healing mechanic. And just when you think the scares are done, when you’re well into the game and have all the tools you need to navigate around potential jumpscares, the final act dunks you into the deep-end with the actual horror and nightmare fuel puppets.
I’m not sure how much the game as a whole qualifies as ‘horror,’ but it’s certainly being lumped in with the Whatever-Mascot Horror Game of the Week genre. Which is a shame because My Friendly Neighborhood is leagues ahead of those other games. It has more in common with survival horror than it does with mascot horror in terms of gameplay and tropes. It’s literally just the ‘monster’ designs leading people to assume its another Poppy Playtime clone complete with half baked story and repetitive, unimaginative gameplay loops. And that’s so far from the truth -
My Friendly Neighborhood is like if Sesame Street and Resident Evil had a beautiful muppet baby that opened its eyes to have an existential crisis when confronted with the horrors and apathy of modern capitalism.

re: Puppet in Lefty
You know that we can see the Puppet's fingers in Lefty's mouth in the pizzeria simulator jumpscare, right? Six fingers total, three on the left side and three on the right. So the puppet has to be in the chest cavity with a leg poking through the arm and the arms just barely able to reach into the head.
Sorry to disappoint you, but you can't. I think what you think are fingers is actually the shadows of Lefty's teeth. Note the square shape and placement.
Though I do agree that the Puppet's in the chest cavity.

Being a fnaf fan is a nightmare because you’ll gladly pick apart the glaring flaws with the series but when non-fnaf fans hate on the series it’s irritating because they’re doing it wrong

on the topic of walking simulators, a lot of the horror walking simulators try to capitalize on the fear of being unable to fight back. you can flee the danger but not destroy it. which is understandable and would be very neat but I haven't seen a game actually utilize that well? Mostly because it's either so unfightable that you can't beat the game, which is just. vexing. or it's too easy to avoid/predict
point being I wanna hear your opinions on these types of horror games
yknow, ive never given it much thought bc i just assumed that had to be a key characteristic of the genre--too much fighting makes it more of a shooter than a horror, and the ability to destroy the danger immediately makes the player feel less scared because they're in control now? normally horror walking simuls are still "beatable," they're just riddled with jumpscares and stealth portions and many of them do string you along until a certain point where you can destroy the threat/monster in a cutscene, just not through regular combat-based gameplay
i'm actually more curious to hear what you would consider to be "utilized well" in this context bc even the best (combat-free) horror games never really break free of this mold, a mechanic that doesn't let you fight it but also doesn't make you run from it is like trying to write a wizard story without magic to me? alien isolation is probably your best bet here bc imo it has an incredibly good combat-stealth balance thanks to its advanced enemy AI that isn't fully killable but you have a fair range of stuff at your disposal to keep it at bay

If i was going to play a fnaf game for the first time ever which one would u recommend i play first
(Side note- maybe u could play it with me ,,,, maybe 😳)
confession: I have never played a fnaf game.
Despite being a huge nerd about the lore I have never played a single fnaf game. I would suggest fnaf 1 cause like, it's the OG but I really have no clue, I can't stand jumpscares for the life of me lmao.

I love being a bard in BG3 bc I can convince the fantasy medieval silent hill nurses to kill each other and their zombie mad surgeon to kill himself. and also be a god to muderous tiny fishmen.
like this clown looking devil bitch, her smug vampire assasin boyfriend, her big red 10000°F stronk tank girlfriend, and her not-so-secretly sweet goth healer bestie just roll into to town to tell lies, tell tall tales, talk to every animal, and eventually help people. sometimes the nerd with the magic nuke in his chest is there. sometimes its the biggest hairiest elf you ever seen is there. usually, so is the dog and the walking brain disguised as a kitty.
