What's Up Wednesdays: It's Chris Jericho!
How is it possible that we are already at the end of August and there are only four short months left before we watch the ball drop in Time Square again? This month's speedlink kicks off with the Ayatollah of Rock 'n' Rolla... about his life as a dad.
I last shared a collection of blog posts from around the web four weeks ago and somehow another month has come and gone. Can you believe it? As the kids get ready to go back to school (if they haven’t already), let’s take another virtual journey of the web in search of some good reading.
Getting us started is Art Eddy from Life of Dad who had the good fortune to interview Chris Jericho. Yup,…

I had a difficult time the past few days and felt that some retail therapy in the form of discounted and used books could help. It was a nonfiction kind of shopping day.
The Dawn of Everything: a new history of humanity by David Graeber & David Wengrow
Undrowned: black feminist lessons from marine mammals by Alexis Pauline Gumbs
Captive Genders: trans embodiment and the prison industrial complex, 2nd Edition by Nat Smith & Eric A. Stanley
The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan
National Geographic Backyard Guide to the Night Sky but Howard Schneider
The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanon
A Paradise Built in Hell: the extraordinary communities that are in disaster by Rebecca Solnit

Booklr Wrapped 2022
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, it is still 2022! But I saw this from @ninja-muse and know that even if I waited til January, it would still be relatively the same.
Template by @_readbyrach on Instagram. (You will need a Canva account and some parts of this are only for the Pro version so if you don't have pro, it might not work or at least it'll look different).
You're supposed to tag people in this but Imma be lazy and say if you see this because I posted it, act like I tagged you and tag me in yalls posts so I can reblog it!
My 'top authors' is actually my most read authors, not my top favorite authors. My 'pages read' includes pages from books I DNFed. The count also doesn't include any of the graphic novels and manga I read in the year because I don't keep track of those on StoryGraph. When I did include those in my SG, I felt that they distorted my stats so I track them on Goodreads instead.

Started reading The World Keeps Ending and the World Goes On: Poems by Franny Choi yesterday. I haven't finished it yet but it's already a 5-star read for me and I've loved damn near every poem so far.
It was recommended for readers who enjoyed the science fiction novel How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu and I think it was accurate to connect these two works together in that way.
Also say hi to Malcolm.

Jericho's End of the 2022 Year Poetry Reads
Some time in the fall of 2022, I felt the sudden urge to learn how to read poetry and how to write it. Before then, I hadn't read much poetry and often struggled with understanding it. That struggle came from a lack of knowledge on the structures and forms of poetry and not allowing myself to spend time with a poem to think it over rather than simply reading a collection just to add it to my reading challenge. But I wanted to change that.
I've read more poetry than what's on this list but these are the poetry collections I've actually finished.
First I should mention a lot of the poetry I've experienced in this time came from the podcast called Poetry Unbound, a podcast part of the On Being team. It's hosted by Irish poet Pádraig Ó Tuama where in each episode, he recites a poem then proceeds to examine the poem and share his thoughts on its form, themes and style. I highly recommend it for anyone who already loves poetry or wants examples on how to interact with poetry. He also just released a book on some of the poetry he read on the podcast with new essays about them called Poetry Unbound: 50 Poems to Open Your World.
The Tradition by Jericho Brown - This was the first poetry collection I picked up to read. I don't remember where I got the recommendation from but Brown was first on my list to read. I find Brown's style accessible and moving. This collection in particular explores themes of race, gender and queer sexuality. There was quite a few poems I had to save on my phone so I could revisit them.
Inheritance by Taylor Johnson - I requested recommendations from a supervisor at one of my jobs who I know loves poetry and she brought me this collection. I had stronger reactions to this collection compared to Brown's though there were also some poems that went over my head. When I told the supervisor about one of the poems I struggled with, she mentioned something about just sitting with the rhythm of the poem and how some poetry leans into the music of language rather than the literal word for word interpretation.
Shine Your Icy Crown by amanda lovelace - I will admit that I knew what I was getting into picking this one up. I went to BookTube looking for any poetry-specific channels and mostly came upon reviewers discussing their dislike for this author, and authors they consider to be on the same level as this author. I've read their debut collection years ago and wasn't impressed and after years of putting out many collections, I have to admit not much as change. I didn't find the work engaging or inspiring. One of my main takeaways from Poetry Unbound is how poetry can make you ask questions and pull on threads the poet leaves for readers to find. that's not what lovelace does. It's all surface level and not even in an elegant way. It's hollow.
Field Guide to the Haunted Forest by Jarod K Anderson - I follow Anderson on my main blog here and on twitter. Because I enjoy the social media content I figured I might enjoy the poetry collection. So much of the themes in the poems reflect my own thoughts in how I interact and view the world. That said, I didn't feel that moved by the poems. Maybe it's because some of them came from social media posts so I've already seen them. Maybe it's because so many poems contained the word "you" and felt like the poems were telling me how to feel and it felt like too much. But it just didn't land for me. I do plan on reading Anderson's other collection though.
We Are Mermaids by Stephanie Burt - Poetry Unbound featured one of the poems from this collection on the podcast and I enjoyed it so much I wanted to read the rest of the book. Overall it was a solid read. I enjoyed the speculative fiction aspect of many of the poems. I liked the exploration of queer and trans identity. But besides the poem read on the podcast, it fell a bit flat for me. I didn't come away with as many thoughts and questions about the poems like I did for The Tradition and Inheritance.
Don't Call Us Dead by Danez Smith - I requested a recommendation from a friend I affectionately call "the poet" when talking about him online and he gave this collection. Hands down, no exaggeration, the best poetry collection I read. The poems are accessible and hard-hitting. The use of imagery and metaphor is so striking. The subject matter for some are heavy. The poems made me sit with them for days. Honestly I've read longer books faster than I read this collection because I had to take my time with each poem, to let it settle.
Overall, I'm enjoying this newfound interest in poetry and plan to continue reading poetry as a staple of my reading habits, whether it be in collections, anthologies, one-offs, podcast episode, etc.

February To (potentially) Be Read List
How Long Til Black Future Month by N.K Jemisin (reading for the speculative fiction book club I co-host at the library I work at)
Alive at the End of the World by Saeed Jones (a poetry collection that caught my eye and after reading the first few poems decided to finish it)
A Poetry Handbook by Mary Oliver (to assign me in my poetry writing, so far it's been real informative)
Zoologies: On Animals and the Human Spirit by Alison Deming (taking a look at human animals' relationship with nonhuman animals and our relationship to art)
Ace Voices: What it Means to be Asexual, Aromantic, Demi and Grey-Ace by Eris Young (because no one understands my complex feelings on relationships like the Ace/Aro communities)
How Far the Light Reaches: A Life in Ten Sea Creatures by Sabrina Imbler (my favorite genre of nonfiction is books on science and nature written by people who are of color and queer and that incorporate their lived experiences in their writings)
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (it's time to finally read this after holding onto it since 2018)

StoryGraph 2022 Wrap Up
I realized that I didn't post my StoryGraph wrap up for 2022. I don't include the manga and graphic novels I read on SG because I don't like how it messes with the stats. I technically read 102 books, which is buckwild but that's because of the manga.
There's a significant dip from March to April because that's when I started working my second job. The genres aren't surprising in the least and I plan to keep that energy in 2023.
What I found most surprising was that I had only 3 5-star reads. I hadn't been paying close attention to my star ratings and didn't know the count was this low even though I feel like I enjoyed what I read last year - even though my overall rating is only 3.5. I only give 5-star ratings to books that shake me emotionally and that I find difficult to not think about even as time passes.
