How European am I?

Well, it seems that looking back over the last 20 years the answer is affirmative. In just this century, I’ve visited Europe 60+ times, across 16 countries. In total I will have spent over 9 months on the continent. I am European, after all, despite being glad to see the back of the EU.

Hell, I can mumble my way through and understand enough Spanish, Italian and French to get by. I’ve driven the autovias, autoroutes, autostradas, and navigated hundreds of peages. I’ve hit 300 km/h on the autobahn and crept along in darkness under the Mont Blanc tunnel for what seemed like hours. I’ve been fined for speeding in France, navigated the peripherique around Paris during rush hour, and I’ve driven 500 miles home from the German/Belgium border without a working clutch.

Europe is so familiar to me it doesn’t even feel like being abroad - except that mostly the driving standard is higher, the roads better, and lots of stuff is cheaper - except good beer.

I didn’t visit Europe till I was almost 20, when in 1985 a work thing took me to Bruge. I kinda liked the “foreign” feel, despite the trip starting on a train at Victoria station. But, for lots of reasons, I didn’t go back to Europe for another 8 years - shortly after I got divorced. Spain, France, Italy, I started ticking them off.

In 2000 I bought a Lotus Elise sports car and through the owners club I started taking even more trips to the continent, but driving this time. Being the other side of the channel, on the wrong side of the road became familiar.

So where have I been? Well, France, closest and the most visited, maybe knocking on two dozen times, including Nice, Reims, Paris, Skiing in the Alps, visited Cannes for the film festival, raced on 4 circuits, Le Mans 24hrs twice plus a fair few road trips on bike and in car. It’s so close I’ve popped over to Pas de Calais for evening dinner! And so big I’ve slept in couchettes on overnight trains to the South of France. It holds my record for longest single day motorbike distance, 672 miles!

Mainland Spain is another regular, well over a dozen times including Skiing in the Sierras, Easter in Alhambra, every other spring for the last decade on the Costas, enduro riding in the Sierra Nevada park twice. Plus Madrid, and much of Andalusia (Cordoba, Granada, Malaga etc). And even Benidorm! We visit the Costa Tropical so often we thought of buying a place out there!

Italy is another regular, a handful of times including skiing in the Italian Alps, under the Matterhorn, city culture in Florence and Bologne, Turin, Maranello to see Ferrari, chilling on the Adriatic in Rimini, and MotoGP stuff in Misano.

Germany, half a dozen times. Berlin for war culture, Bavaria plus a few trips to the Nurburgring on bike and in car. Belgium is similar, probably 5 times to see the F1 race in Spa, and also raced on the circuit a couple of times, plus Bruge and Brussels.

Holland a handful of times, Amsterdam of course maybe twice plus coming in and out of Rotterdam on the North Sea ferry, Antwerp, and I’ve raced in amongst the dunes at Zandvoort. Ireland has, maybe surprisingly, only been visited three times in the last 2 decades, Dublin twice and somewhere on the west coast for a wedding.

Denmark once on a work trip that also took in Sweden. This year will see us visit Norway, also for work. Other single visit destinations include Austria, Gibraltar, Monaco, San Marino, Switzerland, Andorra, and Cyprus.

Oh, almost forgot, we’ve visited two Greek Islands, Kefalonia and Santorini.

We’ve sort of settled into a routine, one that sees winter in the Alps, spring on the Costas of Spain, summer in the UK or long-haul and Autumn doing something random in Europe. As I turn 55 later this year, we’ve started thinking (again) about spending our winters in Southern Spain to get away from grimy days and sub 10 degrees temperatures.

We’ve now left the EU yet it makes no difference to how I feel and maybe that says it all. Europe has always been there, will always be there, and be my go-to destination for most things. But Europe is not the EU, so sod the EU - a few extra formalities at the border, a few pence on a tarrif, these things will not keep me away.

But rejoin the unelected fiefdom based in Brussels that until recently had French as the official language? No thsnks, they can go fuck themselves, I’m not voting for a federal Europe - I believe in the UK and what we will do on the world stage.
