Sometimes I’m just chilling and I have the horrible thought of “What if Mike’s monologue was bad on purpose because he’s socially awkward and bad at verbally expressing emotion to El and so he just word vomits feelings everywhere and not because they aren’t compatible as boyfriend and girlfriend “ and then I sit here and stress about this for like twenty minutes and then I immediately bounce back to “byler endgame is going to be so much fun “ ……do you have any hyper specific doubts or am I the only one worried about these things on occasion
i dont think they would blur the lines between just being a socially awkward teenager and real authentic love. they always make it very clear when someones just being awkward. a good example is vickie speed talking to robin and distractingly making a peanut butter and peanut butter sandwich. i think maybe the scene in s3 in the gas station when mikes trying to tell her he loves her for the first time and cant say it was portrayed as just an awkward teenager moment but then it got serious in s4 when el was crying bc he never says it. so no i dont think it was just awkward teenager word vomit.
i honestly kinda dont have any doubts at this point. theres not a specific thing that holds me back from being completely confident anymore. it used to be the monologue but after seeing so many different analyses and just reminding myself of everything else, ive stopped thinking he meant any of that. it just doesnt make sense that he couldnt say it when el was sobbing in front of him but he could say it when she was physically unable to reply or interrupt him and he thought she might die and needed any strength or motivation to fight. he wasnt even 100% sure if she could hear him.
and also for pretty much every seemingly pro mlvn thing in the show, theres a counter argument thats more in favor for byler. “but mike called her every day for 353 days!!” ok? and he stopped the second will was in danger. “he said el was the most incredible person in the world!!” yeah but he said befriending will was the best thing hes ever done, involving himself with will unlike the sentence for el. “he looked like that in the van scene bc will was talking about el!!” no he was talking about his own feelings for him. “but mike explicitly told will theyre just friends!!” oh honey that was the most textbook representation of internalized homophobia ive ever seen.
so yeah byler endgame.
