People of that civilization used to make beads out of gold, silver, copper, clay, ivory and even wood. Beads have been of an important significance as well like black beads in the mangalsutra keep the evil at bay. Beads are woven and created into beautiful necklaces, bracelets and even long earrings and as there is a huge variety available in the market there can be a lot of experiments done on the jewellery creativity side. Beads are available in a variety of range.
Bridal Jewellery
Made of superior metals and excellent quality, jewellery accentuates the beauty of bride in multiples. Though these days silver and platinum jewellery is gaining popularity, gold jewellery still holds the most popularity among Indians. But as you move from country to country you will learn that bridal jewellery style and tradition changes from place to place. For eg. In India bridal jewellery means heavy studded jewellery that consists adorning from head to toe but abroad bridal jewellery means brooch, pendant and a bridal set which is different from Indian bridal set because it only consists of an engagement ring and a wedding ring.
Bespoke or Custom-made Jewellery
Custom-made jewellery is personalized jewellery this type of jewellery why the entire base of designers first came into existence. The more customer and business came into relationship.  A customer gets to explain their needs, budget, requirement, occasion and the designer creates a piece keeping the above in mind and this kind of bespoke design has a personal touch to the jewellery. This happens particularly in cases where readymade jewellery does not match the taste of the person.
Fashion Jewelry
Fashion jewellery is also known as costume jewellery, mainly for the reason that it is not made of precious metals and stones, rather lighter and more flexible material in terms of quality and also value. Like brass, copper along with plating etc. Fashion jewellery is trend-conscious and keeps on changing as per changing needs. For e.g. H&M
Filigree Jewellery
Filigree is a delicate embellishment in which fine, pliable threads of precious metal are twisted or curled into a design and then soldered onto (or into) the jewellery. In my definition I like to call filigree the ancient way of quilling. Filigree work is done on silver and involves lots of precision and technicality, added with great amount of patience and an eye for minute details. Historically, filigree work was quite popular in countries like Egypt, Italy, and Spain. India's history of filigree work goes back to early centuries. Filigree jewellery is very popular in Orissa.
Gold Jewelry

Things you need to know before travelling to Dubai
For many travellers, Dubai is a great destination for those seeking an exotic escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Dubai offers a range of exciting places from magical beaches to fascinating nightlife, however it is very essential to realise that every oasis has its own illusions. This article covers all the crucial things that you need to know before travelling to Dubai.
Dubai visa for Indian citizens
But, before you book your tickets to Dubai, it is important that you apply for a Dubai visa from India. Since it is mandatory to have a Dubai visa on arrival for Indian citizens, you have to apply for the same weeks before your journey.
What is the right time to Visit Dubai?
The best time to visit Dubai depends on the adventures that you’d like to enjoy.ke. The winter months are the best time because it's when the weather isn't hot or cold and is just the right temperature. Winter in Dubai is a perfect occasion to go to the beach, relax and have a great time. It is also the time of Christmas and as such you will find the streets decorated with lights and decor.
Is Dubai costly?
Travelling to Dubai is splendid but expensive. During winter, the flight tickets tend to be more expensive just like hotel rooms. Generally speaking, things like jewellery, souvenirs, and clothing are more expensive in the winter months since it is when tourism activity is at its best. Since summer in Dubai is extremely hot, most people tend to remain inside and as such prices are reduced to lure shoppers into malls.
Transportation in Dubai
In the question of how you can travel to and from Dubai, there are many options from hiring a car using a taxi service, or using Dubai's public transportation. City taxis are one of the most widely used methods of transportation. The taxis in Dubai are in excellent condition and the drivers are also very hospitable, welcoming and calm.
Although taxis are at large in Dubai, however, it's not the best option for everyday travel and commutes because of the high cost and strain to your travelling budget. As such, you can opt for the NOL Transit card that you can buy from the nearest metro station. The card will give you access to travel through the Dubai Metro Station & bus routes.
Tumblr media
What do you need to wear in Dubai?
Women aren't required to wear an abaya (a long dress or cloak) in all instances and they are permitted to show more skin than they would be if they were living in Saudi Arabia. The best guideline is to cover your entire body from knees to shoulders. Don't emphasise hips or cleavage. Swimsuits and bikinis are acceptable for those who are at the water or at a beach.
Alcohol in Dubai
In relation to alcohol consumption in Dubai, there are some points you need to be aware of. In Dubai, legally permitted drinking is allowed up to 21 years old. Only stores that are controlled by the state like MMI as well as African + Eastern have been permitted to offer alcohol. If you are planning to purchase one of these bottles, then carry your passport along and complete the form. In all honesty, it's not legal to drink alcohol in Dubai in the event that you're an Muslim or do not have a valid license. To be honest If you're having drinks at an establishment, you don't have to worry about the bartender's responsibilities in monitoring the rules.
Words are important in Dubai. Be aware of your words.
Be cautious about the things you say when you are in Dubai. Although it is a place that is renowned for a variety of things, the promise of freedom of speech is not among the most important. While you can have access to the most popular social media platforms like YouTube, Twitter and Google, be mindful of the content you share on these sites while you're in Dubai. Making a negative comment about government officials or government policies can be considered a serious crime.
Keep hydrated
Being in Dubai means that you have to drink plenty of water. Many tourists overlook or ignore drinking sufficient amounts of water especially when they are in the desert side, which can lead to dehydration and other health issues. As such, it is highly recommended that you drink at least eight glasses of water each day. Consuming plenty of water-rich foods such as tomatoes, watermelon as well as radishes will help you to withstand the Arabian temperatures.
Be smart when you shop
False goods continue to hamper the Dubai market and the economy to the present. In the year 2020, Dubai authorities have seized and destroyed nearly 45,000+ counterfeit products.
Some of the most counterfeited brands are Apple, Vogue and Chanel. If you have any plans to shop in Dubai, then it is highly advised that you go to official brand outlets so as to make sure you’re buying original products. Avoid purchasing from vendors on the street. Make sure you buy from a store you trust.

MYTH IN THE SYSTEM OF REPRESENTATION
Boikarabelo Tladi
Tumblr media
FIGURE 1: New Ark Mission Of India “Winter Collection” advertisement. Little girl in cardboard dress. Published August 2011. Photographed by Senthil Khumar
Tumblr media
FIGURE 2: Sisley “fashion junkie” advertisement with two models. Published July 2007 photographed by Taurus.
The following essay will use two images (figure 1 & 2) with a common thread to detail how semiotics and myth are embedded in representation. I chose images that are centered around the idea of fashion because throughout cultures around the world, items of clothing exist as signifiers carrying loaded ideas.
This semiotic analysis of Figure 1 aims to understand the image seen through the lens of the first 2 orders of representation. The 1st order being Dennotative and the 2nd being connotative.
The Advertisment is comprised of 3 elements, a prepubescent depressed indian girl with a ponytail standing in front of a grey background wearing discarded cardboard pieces cut in place to emulate an evening gown. The words “Winter collection” are graphicaly placed in front of her in an elegant, non serif and slightly transparent font. Lastly, a small line of writing is placed below the girl. It reads as follows, “To 33.4% of the population of Karnataka, garbage is fashion. Please donate your old clothes. New Ark Mission of India. 98452 81915. www.newarkmission.org”
This advertisement is for an organization that aimed to receive donations in the form of old clothes to distribute to the less fortunate of Karnataka, India. There is no age limit to who they plan on helping yet the campaign cleverly uses the signifier of a little girl. Children signify innocence and being defenseless. This strikes a cord with a viewer, one of empathy.  The second signifier is what the girl is wearing. The shape of a dress is easily recognizable and synonymous with a girl child however what makes this element striking is the “fabric” of the dress, Cardboard. In the context of being used as substitute for cotton or silk, cardboard signifies poverty. Cardboard is often used by homeless people on colder nights as a blanket. The phrase “winter collection” becomes an ironic exclamation. We typically think of winter collections as designer, warm and beautiful clothes. Forgetting that they are just that, clothes. What is being communicated by this advert is that the privileged end of society is enthralled in consumerism and fashion culture, they become detached and forget how essential clothes are to basic living. It is a cry to donate clothes that will be used as a survival tool and not a frivolous show of class.
In closing, this advertisement is a notable example of how understanding the shared codes of society allows one to create an image that is minimal in composition yet layered and powerful in meaning.
‘Myth is a peculiar system; in that it is constructed from a semiological chain which existed before it.’ Barthes in (Hall 1997: 68) In other words myth can be defined as a step past semiotics. It is in this step where the ideas being signified are observed with a wholistic perspective to form an idea on what is ultimately being communicated by a medium. With Figure 2 as the premise, I aim to show myth in the system of representation.
Figure 2 is an advertisement by Sisley, a fashion brand. The photo is taken in a mysterious room with black tile walls, black glass table and a black chair against the wall. The photo focuses on two white girls. One of them is a brunette with heavy eye shadow, wearing an elegant violet dress with strings of jewellery hanging around her neck and from the dress. She is slouched over the table while her face is aligned with the positioning of the camera. Her face lacks a tangible expression, she seems to drift in and out of consciousness because her eyes are rolled back while her mouth hangs open. In her hand she holds a white stick. The other girl has dirty blond hair, her eyeshadow is just as heavy as the brunets’. She is wearing a sheer dress that exposes her breast. Her head is facing down on the table, she too has a white stick. It is in her nose and placed over the white dress on the table. The table has a black credit card on it with a white powder over it that we can safely assume to be cocaine. The words “Sisley Fashion Junkie” are placed in the center of the image.
The advertisement was banned for glorifying drug use yet, no one in the photo is seen doing drugs. This is the genius of semiotics, the bridge between what is seen and how it is received. The signifiers imply that the two girls are high off cocaine even though their snorters are placed over a white dress and not the actual coke. With the slogan of the campaign being “Fashion junkie” we align the white dress with the white powder, making the clothes the actual drug, not the cocaine. However, when analysing the myth being represented, we must consider the broader cultural context.
This ad is not selling a specific item, it is luring you into the fashion underworld. The signifiers being used (sheer designer dresses, jewelry, make up, black cards and cocaine) signify wealth and or beauty. When married together these signifiers communicate glamour, an ideal at the very core of the fashion world. The caption “fashion junkie” is a layered expression which serves as powerful commentary on how we consume fashion. Fashion is a step beyond clothing. It is not solely about being protected from the elements, it a device used to communication wealth, express political ideas, perpetuate gender roles etc. The word Junkie alludes not only to the rumours of addiction amongst models, it describes the gross consumerism within fast fashion. Fashion is currently a $2.5 trillion sector (The Problem With Fast Fashion [sp] 2019) because shopping has become a more frequent task in our lives now more than ever before. It seems that the public too is addicted to fashion.
This campaign has a dark and eerie mood, enforced by the black furniture elements and the heavy black eye shadow. Sisley sets the scene this way because the ad is about the darker side of the fashion world. Sisley does not shy away from the addiction rumours surrounding models. It is well known that super models like Kate moss and Naomi Campbell were cocaine addicts. Nevertheless, the world of fashion, blinding with flashing lights and crawling with mystery is still really enticing to young girls around the world. This ad exploits their curiosity. The way that none of the models are looking in the camera, as they usually are, gives the viewer the sub conscious impression that the ad is an expose of what is usually kept a secret. The image is also positioned in a way that puts the models right before you, not above you or. They are wearing luxurious clothes and have expensive drugs on the table but nothing about their demeanour is larger than life. This realization creates a certain intimacy with the models and the viewer, the feeling that millions of girls seeing this can almost see themselves within it.
And therein lies the myth of this Image, the idea that no matter how terrifying the things you hear about the fashion world are we still physically and emotionally buy into it. In closing, I hope I have adequately depicted how myth functions within representation. A device taking signifiers and exposing their meaning within the broader context of culture itself.

Traditionally also, a significant part of jewellery manufacturing has been handmade. A jewellery piece in India can be bulk manufactured but somethings like the intricate details of settings, enamelling need a skilled craftsman which is why every jewellery is handmade.
Ivory Jewellery
Jewellery that is made from the tusk of an elephant is called ivory jewellery. Importance of ivory jewellery can be guessed from the fact that in Gujarat, the bride receives an ivory bangle from her family just before marriage as jewellery. During marriage ceremony wearing of ivory bangles used to be a must for brides. But over a period of time as hunting become forbidden by law, ivory selling is illegal now and the ivory bangles are not replaces with white plastic bangle.
Jadau Jewellery
Jadau jewellery has always been considered as the prized possession in our country. Jadau Jewellery forms one of the major examples of high skilled craftsmanship that was brought into India by Mughals. This kind of work is carried out of highly skilled craftsman of Rajasthan. Rajasthan is also the hub for jadau jewellery. It’s a traditional technique of embedding diamonds, pearls, rubies or emeralds into gold. Kundan jewellery is made from gold with a core of wax. Gold used for this kind of jewellery is highly refined it involves 24k, 22k gold. Kundan jewellery is also the brides favourite kind of jewellery to wear. Kundan jewellery has had a legacy of 2,500 years. The art of making kundan is known as jadau.
      Meenakari Jewelry
Enameling is the ancient art of melting powdered glass onto metal. Meenakari jewellery was initially used as a technique to be used on the back of polki/jadau jewellery. Later it became a design of its own. The design basically contained vibrant colours like blue, red, green etc and were filled into motifs of flora and fauna. Primarily this kind of craftsmanship you will find in delhi, rajasthan and banaras.
   Navratna Jewellery
In Navratna jewellery, nine auspicious stones are used in a single ornament. The belief behind this is that the nine stones together ensure well-being of the person who wears it. In India, Navratna jewellery has been given major importance, because of its astrological significance as well as its innate charm. But historically seen Navratna was not only considered auspicious in India but also in other parts of Asia like Thailand, the Navaratna is officially recognised as a national and royal symbol of the king.
    Silver Jewellery
Silver Jewellery along with gold jewellery is quite popular amongst Indian women. Ornaments made of silver such as rings, bracelets, chains, necklaces, nose rings, earrings, toe rings, heavy kadas, and armlets, form integral part of Indian jewellery. Silver is also a popular metal in places that have hot weather so silver is worn on the body to equalise the body and weather temperature.
Temple Jewellery
Ethnic jewellery of South of India. It’s also a jewellery type that uses a lot of spiritual symbols like sculptures of gods and goddesses. It was originally made with gold and precious stones but now with growing demand but decreasing the investment level people have started buying other materials made temple jewellery. The intricacy of this type of jewellery is so very precise and antique that every south Indian bride would have one piece of temple jewellery on her in every ceremony.
Tribal Jewellery
Tribal jewellery in India is quite rich. Each tribe has kept its unique style of jewellery intact even now. The original format of jewellery design has been preserved by ethnic tribes. Jewellery that is made of bone, wood, clay, shells and crude metal by tribals is not only attractive, but also holds a distinct rustic charm. This kind of jewellery also talks about each tribe and the areas that they live in and speak of the supplies they receive. Tribal jewellery is very unique is shows very creative ways of jewellery making.

Buy some Indian jewellery for any outfit.
The malls and the many retails stores are geared up for luring its customers with tempting discounts, especially when it comes to jewellery. And why not? Remember that along with your outfit, it is the jewellery that makes a statement. Parties or Indian weddings, we’ve seen that with sets, standalone pieces also form a big part of it and so it become imperative to ensure that your baubles are chosen well. Says corporate executive Preeti Anwesha from Malad, who recently tied the knot at her own home, “For me, the plan to get married fell into place quite suddenly and though the function was at home, I definitely wanted to look my best.
My stylist friend suggested kundan jewellery as that goes with everything, so I opted for it and it looked so beautiful,” she shares. Should you want different options to match your functions, keep these tips in mind… Match it with your outfits: Get a fix first on what you will be wearing and then buy your jewellery. You may need the necklace to perfectly match the neckline of the outfit. Darker shaded outfits are well complemented with jewellery in gold and if you have a pastel-hued outfit, rose gold or a mix of gold and silver or diamonds works beautifully. Go vintage
Antique rani haars make for a classic look and several designers are bringing it into contemporary style. “The look is royal and elegant and goes with anything — from an engagement party to the wedding day function. Be careful while you layer other chains with it and keep a gap between them,” suggests stylist Swati Karande.
Tumblr media
Kundan is classic
Kundan sets are elaborate and have detailed work within. When it’s mixed with semi-precious stones it makes for a more elaborate and rich effect. Go for a matching choker-maang tikka, rings or bazubandhs in the look. It looks best on red and maroon-hued lehengas.

The most luring aspect of an elite Indian wedding is its claim to a global yet Indian sensibility, bringing together the “contemporary” and the “traditional” into the wedding experience. Consequently, the line-up of the wedding events includes traditional ceremonies associated with various communities. The wedding is typically divided into three parts: pre-wedding, main, and post-wedding. The pre-wedding includes all the preparations and a party the night before where each side of the family can meet each other and dance and have fun. A Pandit, who has selected the day of the wedding based on the bride and groom’s horoscopes, conducts a prayer with family members to provide the couple with a happily married life.
The hunt for the perfect wedding dress is time taking and requires patience. Likewise the quest for the perfect jewellery is time consuming and very hectic. Traditionally, gold has been considered auspicious among Hindus and is regarded to be symbolic of Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth. Handmade jewelry Talking about jewelry manufacturing in India is as good as talking about handmade jewelry in India. A major chunk of jewelry in the country is made by independent craftsmen. Traditionally also, a significant part of jewelry manufacturing has been handmade jewelry. Ivory Jewelry Jewelry that is made from the tusk of an elephant is called ivory jewelry. Importance of ivory jewelry can be guessed from the fact that in Gujarat, the bride receives an ivory bangle from her family just before marriage as jewelry. Encashing Gold is Simple, Safe, and Secure at Jewels Planet
Gold is one of the most preferred forms of investments that offer assurance and safety, especially under ambiguous economic conditions. In today’s uncertain times even financial gurus invest in the yellow metal rather than buying stocks.
Ever thought why people put their hard-earned income into buying gold? The main reason is that this precious metal retains its sheen even in the most severe recession. It means gold always holds some of its worth as insurance against hard times.
People understand that gold as an investment is like putting money into high-interest fixed deposits because it fetches great interest in the future.
Deciding to sell your gold is not easy. There are hordes of buyers who buy gold for cash. With digital technology taking reign, you may also find many online gold buyers in the market.
Tumblr media
With so many players in the market, one should tread with caution while looking for gold buyers.
Let’s take a quick look at some tips that are key to fruitful transactions for selling gold-
●       Gain thorough knowledge about buyers who offer cash for gold. Explore their standing in the market. Gather information about their payment methods.
●       Navigate through their websites, carefully read customer reviews, and check their reputation by clicking on their social media handles. The more you explore the better. By gaining information through multiple channels, you will have a reasonable idea about their worth.
●       Always know the current value of your assets. Separate the items as per their purity and brand value. This will save time and also clear any line of doubt.
●       Indians are emotional by nature, as such harbor a sentimental value with their assets. In this light, pledging may seem an attractive option, where you get money and also hold on to your valuables. This may look like a double treat but ultimately gets baffling because of the escalating interest. Do not get lured into a pledging trap.
At this time, you may be thinking, where to sell gold? How do I find a buyer whom I can trust?
Jewels Planet is your answer to all your gold woes. It is a one-stop- solution that offers a quick, easy, and risk-free experience to its customers.
Here are the top 5 reasons why visiting Jewels Planet should be your top priority-
1.   Spot analysis- At Jewels Planet, you get on-the-spot analysis of your gold through modern technology. You can sell unwanted gold and also broken and unused jewellery pieces.
2.   Values- Jewels Planet boasts of a soaring reputation in the market mainly because of its business ethics. It has a devoted customer base that swears by their honesty, transparency, and integrity.
3.   Payment options- Flexible modes of payment are an added feather in Jewels Planet’s cap. Customers find it very convenient to get paid instantly by cash against gold, cheque, online transfers, or through NEFT/RTGS.
4.   Staff- An overtly professional, well-trained, and courteous staff goes the extra mile to make your buying-selling experience a memorable one.
5.   No pledging- Jewels Planet does not encourage pledging of gold. It does not give any false hopes or trick you into a pledging trap. You get the best possible price for your gold in a hassle- free environment.
In a culture where gold symbolizes wealth, family tradition, and emotional bonding, selling gold is not an easy decision. Therefore, under dire circumstances, when the need arises, you should visit a buyer who offers the best value for gold. This will give you peace of mind and also a reason to smile.

Gold price is likely to gain at least 12 per cent this calendar year on intermittent demand from institutional investors and safe haven buying from retail consumers, especially in the US where presidential elections are due in November.
Trading currently at Rs 48,041 per 10g after hitting a record high of Rs 48,380 per 10g on June 24, gold price in India is forecast to set a new record of Rs 54,000 per 10g in Indian markets by the end of this calendar year. The upsurge in the rupee value of gold would follow similar a move in its prices in global markets.
Gold has proved to be a safe bet against a slowing global economy due to the increasing number of coronavirus (Covid-19) cases and geopolitical tensions with China. Gold has proved to be the only asset class in these uncertain times to offer 23 per cent returns in the first half of calendar 2020 and a staggering 41.6 per cent in the last one year. Since its level of Rs 27,840 per 10g in January 2017, gold investors have become richer by 72.6 per cent.
“Fundamentals are currently in favour of gold prices. The Donald Trump administration in the US would try to capture citizen’s eyeballs with lots of luring pictures to revive the country’s economy which has been severely hit because of Covid-19 pandemic. The US financial markets might see fresh announcements to bring the economy back on track which may keep the dollar under pressure and support gold. Apart from that geopolitical tensions between China and the rest of the world also favour gold to hedge against economic downturn. Thus, we see gold prices touching Rs 54,000 per 10g with sharp volatility by the end of calendar 2020,” said Padmanabhan, managing director, NAC Jewellers, a Chennai based jewellery retailer.
Among other fundamentals, rising unemployment rates across the world is a major cause of worry. Despite falling imports into India and China, gold prices are moving up due to high investment and consumer demand in the US. A Metal Focus report suggests gold supply to remain lower by 5 per cent this year. Metal Focus, a London headquartered research firm, said gold price for 2020 would average $1700 per ounce against the first half average price of $ 1661.
ALSO READ: Non-life insurers to offer standard Covid covers to consumers from July 10
In international markets, gold prices reported a gain of 16.7 per cent in the first half of calendar 2020. Gold price in the London spot market is currently quoting at $1771.3 an oz, a rise of phenomenal 47.6 per cent since October 2018 and 25.7 per cent in one year.
The jump in gold prices in the rupee value was sharper than in dollar prices due to the 8.6 per cent depreciation in the Indian currency during the last one year. On Friday, the rupee closed at 75.6 against a dollar compared to 69.2 against a dollar, a year ago.
chart Meanwhile, in a major worry for the global economy, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has forecast the world and Indian economy to contract by 4.9 per cent and 4.5 per cent, respectively, in calendar 2020 due to the lockdown aimed at curbing the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. This has taken a toll on crude oil prices, which have contracted by 40 per cent since January this year.
Prithviraj Kothari, managing director, RiddiSiddhi Bullion, one of India’s largest bullion dealers, said, “Gold pries would remain highly volatile in the next six months as mining companies would start increasing supply to take advantage of high prices and hedging in the world markets to ensure returns.” He is, however, fundamentally bullish on gold.
Kothari suggests that consumers buy gold at any price available as the yellow metal is the only source with earn high long-term returns.
“Gold prices kept a firm trading range despite a rally in equity indices. The worries over record virus cases in the US and other parts of the world have kept risk premium high in gold prices. The US Federal Reserve’s new capital rules will put a cap on bank dividend payments as well as halting share repurchases until the end of the year, which also supported gold prices to trade firm,” said Tapan Patel, senior analyst (Commodities), HDFC Securities.
Silver prices also moved in positive territory and offered 28 per cent returns in one year. Silver prices are likely to move in tandem with gold in the future.

  Antique Jewellery
The jewellery which is not in mainstream production and of which the mode of production is no longer popular is known by the name of 'Antique Jewellery.' This kind of jewellery has dull and rough look, combined with an old world charm, and this serves as the major USP of such jewellery. Oxidised in the modern industry passes for antique style jewellery and looks really great with traditional wear. Antique jewellery abroad can be Victorian or Edwardian styled jewellery which was extremely popular in the era and later died down but now has sprung back into action.
   Aadya
 Bead Jewellery
Bead art in India is five thousand years old and dates back to the time of Indus Valley Civilization.
Gold is a metal that lures many. It gives the security against any financial crisis, because of its easy liquidity and is also used by women for adorning themselves. Traditionally, gold has been considered auspicious among Hindus and is regarded to be symbolic of Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth.
 Handmade jewellery
Talking about jewellery manufacturing in India is as good as talking about handmade jewellery in India. A major chunk of jewellery in the country is made by independent craftsmen whether the jewellery is costume or fine.

Why women love gemstone and diamond jewellery?
Tumblr media
You will be hard pressed to find a woman who doesn’t like gemstone and diamond jewellery or is not moved by the mere mention of it. I remember my grandmother and aunts making such a hullaballoo during a cousin’s weddings over diamond jewellery – in the great Indian wedding scene the bride is usually valued as per the jewellery she wears.
If you go by gemstone and diamond jewellery advertising, it is clearly a woman’s domain – and a jewel is critical for a man to secure his woman. Don’t believe me, have you seen these ads?
“Woo her with a solitaire ring, and she will surely say yes.”
“Charm her with a bracelet or ear-rings and she is all yours.”
GAGA OVER GEMSTONES!
But what is it about jewels that get a woman so excited; so easy to be won over; to be impressed?
Is it the sparkle or the glamour or the size or the rock? Or is it just that the advertisements that are so brilliantly created? Or do real women have a real preference for gemstones?
I decided to explore this question a little further by asking women about what is it that makes a piece of jewellery or gemstone so special that we go gaga over it at the drop of a hat.
A SPARKLE OF BEAUTY!
“I hear the word ‘Gemstone’ and something ‘sparkling’ and really ‘beautiful’ comes in front of my eyes but my brain takes me back to the chemistry class when I had learnt about gemstone as a ‘mineral’,” says Sneha Jain
Sneha is actually quite correct. A gemstone is after all just a stone – going by conventional wisdom, “Gemstones are naturally occurring stones which maybe further classified into precious, owing to their monetary value”. Then why all the excitement over it?
As per Sanjana Marlecha, “a working definition of gemstone would be a stone that has certain unique qualities with respect to colour or rarity that makes it unique and thereby precious.”
Ritu Agarwal likes to relate to them as “the feminine-ness of ruby; calmness of the emerald; power of the blue sapphire and the spark of diamond.”
Shilpa Chopda feels that “even though the other gemstones are not as hard or precious as diamonds, they are beautiful to look at due to their gorgeous hues and imperfections.”
THE MYSTERIES OF A GEM!
So is the allure of a gem in its beauty, its colour, its sparkle?  Majorly, yes!
But there is one more important fact we cannot ignore. There is a school of thought that believes in gemstones being good for various aspects of life- from health to romance to business. Crystals associated with the body chakras are used for healing and astrological gemstones are believed to bring about positive changes in the life of the wearer.
“Gemstones are exotic minerals which are strikingly beautiful and colourful. They are used in jewellery but perhaps their most mysterious attribute is that they are used as healing stones (and they do work!)”, says Pallavi Sharma from Mumbai. She runs a successful e-commerce venture and has been wearing a yellow sapphire since 2003, which she says has helped increase her self-confidence and made her a better judge of people.
THE REAL ALLURE!
“Diamonds really are “forever” and they are super awesome heirlooms to pass on to the next generations and cushions for bad times!”, says Nidhi Surana- a homemaker cum investment banker.
A girl’s best friend, the most celebrated of all gems – a diamond has successfully been cultivated as the ultimate symbol of love and affection! No matter who you are or how you deny it, the lure is unmistakable and hard to resist. The hardest mineral in nature, its crystal lattice is what makes it so unique. Flaunted in baubles as cut or uncut – all that matters is that it is a diamond. The bigger the better; it is a sign of affluence and there is a whole science devoted to grading it commercially.
“I remember never being truly enamoured by gemstones till perhaps the second when my husband-to-be got me a diamond. I am not big on jewellery still but these two rings [the proposal ring and the engagement ring] make me feel like the prettiest girl. Every girl wants to feel like that once in a while,” confesses Sonal Das.
Hence, I can sum up by saying that more than the commercial value attributed to jewels, it is the emotions attached that make it special for the wearer. So while somebody wears it for confidence, somebody else will wear it for the beauty of it. And that perhaps blue diamond engagement rings will never go out of style or business!!
