#idk why john but he's just an interesting 'villian' to me

Just finished Bees and yet again the Bree + Roger subplots are the least interesting to me but I’m glad we got more of William and of Ian and Rachel! It kinda dragged on a bit with the day-to-day monotony of the Ridge (which I usually like but this was a lot) but overall I enjoyed the book!
Major Spoilers under Read More
John Cinnamon is my new favorite character! He is such a sweet young man and I think I’m going to go back and read the Lord John series now too! Because it felt like I was missing something with the whole Percy subplot in MOBY + this book having not read it.
Like lowkey why is everyone other than Jaime and Claire’s immediate offspring (sans Willie) more interesting? Idk how Diana managed to create such an unlikeable little family unit with Brianna, Roger, and their kids (tho I do like Jeremiah, not so much Amanda) but such a rich supporting cast!
Also why give Brianna a heart condition if it’s just magically going to be fixed by her being pregnant?!
I will say though it’s interesting that Davy isn’t a time traveller like his siblings. Makes you wonder if Fergus (who I am also choosing to believe is La Comte’s son) is a traveller or not and what this means for Claire and her family. Also makes one wonder if Percy’s family that he married into or even Fergus himself might be one of her ancestors 👀
The Richardson subplot is…😬 Why would you make an abolitionist the main villian! Not to mention he has African American ancestry! Diana WTF? Your racism is showing in this book 🤦‍♀️ Not to mention the plot with Ulysses/Joseph Stevens… like Diana why???
I am also choosing to believe that Totis is Ian’s son! He is such a sweet addition to the household, even if the reasons were a bit strenuous in the book. Though I am also intrigued by the Jenny/Joseph Brant’s Uncle romance. Though I don’t know why Claire didn’t tell Jenny that the war would be over in a matter of months? 🤔
Makes me wonder why she’s decided to kill off Percy and what this means for the Percy & Fergus storyline.
And why in hell Hal want to see Ben! Like I was under the impression that Amaranthus was in cahoots with Ben and then she went to see him and saw him with a other woman which came out of nowhere. Honestly it would have been more interesting if she’d known and went be with him and left Trevor with the Willie and Lord John. Bye maybe the whole widow thing is a ruse and she lied about the other woman and maybe she is in on it?
Though it makes me wonder if Hal made the poison to poison Ben…
Like I wonder if William will take Amatanthus up on her offer and pass off his title and estates to their kid. Like obviously that’s what Ben did with her and why I thought that Amarantus was more involved with the plan than we saw (esp with her reaction when she went to see him) though I’m dubious about whether her account of the events is true or not.
I mean the way she brazenly suggested the plan that Ben had gone through with seemed suspicious to me!
I think Richardson is involved with Rob Cameron in some way and that the gold is going to come into play. Again, weird choice of villain with Richardson being an abolitionist but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
And also WTF happen to Ulysses? Is he dead? I know Duncan was one of his men but like why didn’t you just tell him she was in Nova Scotia? Just be vague and then he might not have tried to ya know oust Jaime and that whole skirmish!
Like I want to see less filler (or just more with beloved characters like Lizzie!) and more streamlining from the editor on the major plot points!
Also WTF happened to Buck!

The first time I watched hairspray I was really confused why Edna was played by a man - I was like ?? is this supposed to be a trans woman? Huh? And my google search just told me that the role is ‘‘traditionally played by a man’‘ so I essentially went huh okay weird one of those weird theater things I guess, whatever
Well youtube randomly pushed You Can’t Stop The Beat back on my dash and of course I watched it and almost cried but well. It also made me think about this again. And man this isn’t a proper meta bc I haven’t actually watched the movie in ages and have never seen the musical live but
Edna isn’t a trans woman. If she was there’d probably be a lot of discourse about casting John Travolta to play her (largely justified, though ppl do sometimes miss some nuance in these discussions re ppl not being out yet). But she’s not. Fuck man, no one was probably even thinking about trans woman at all when they first cast a man for that role.
What Edna is, is a woman who is derided as ugly and fat who struggles with that quite a bti, who does not fit societies beauty standarts and then throughout the story becomes more confident and self assured and in You Can’t Stop The Beat finally steps on stage (literally) and sings ‘‘You can’t stop my happiness ‘cause I like the way I am’‘
And I think for that casting a cis man really works.
Because, yes fatness is one aspect of what is often seen as ugly in people (more strongly in people perceived as women than men? idk? possibly). But manliness specifically is something that is seen as ugly in women.
How many women (both cis and trans!) struggle with being too tall? too muscular? too hairy? with not being curvy enough or their faces being too hard or their voices being too deep? Many do. Many many many do. My mom always hated being as tall as she is. I struggled a lot with ‘‘looking like a man in a dress’‘ whenever I tried on dresses as a teenager (I still sometimes do! My brain still sometimes gives that as an immediate response when I try on a dress that doesn’t flatter my body type! Even though I’m nonbinary now! Even though I rationally know men can damn well put on dresses and look great in them!)
John Travolta isn’t playing a trans woman in the movie hairspray, he’s playing a woman who is fat and mainly looking and self concious and derided as ugly by the villians of the movie. And she’s relatable! To trans women? Sure! Bc trans women struggle a lot with passing aka not being feminine enough. But also for cis women bc they struggle with that a lot too! And even for some nonbinary ppl bc sadly we can’t escape all the gender specific beauty standarts drilled into our brains even if we escape gender itself
I just think it’s really fun and interesting how much Edna being played by a man does for the show. People notice, people are confused, I googled what Edna’s name was for this bc I couldn’t remember and literally the first autocomplete it gave me was hairspray ‘’john travolta why’‘ yeah why indeed. I still don’t know why they originally did that but I like it

i’m gonna talk a little bit about sherlock under the cut
listen, its 4 am and i’m just like IN this rn, i can not get over how fucking STUPID season four was, like the entire goddamn season. the whole cd that mary left? dumb as shit. “save him sherlock, put yourself in harms way so that he can save you” is so fucking dumb its so dumb the whole ~mary was actually a good guy~ thing was so DUMB JUST MAKE HER THE GODDAMN VILLIAN. every single scene with mycroft in this goddamn season. dumb as shit. don’t even get me started on the fucking last episode. the secret sister? bitch? you stupid bitch? IT WAS LITERALLY ALL SET UP FOR THEM TO JUST MAKE MARY THE VILLIAN AND THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN INTERESTING!!!!! IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE WHAT IT WAS!!!! I’M INSULTED!!! HOW DID IT GET THAT WAY??? HOW DID THAT HAPPEN???? HOW DID THAT LAST EPISODE ESPECIALLY GET PAST SO MANY PEOPLE TO PRODUCTION? WHAT THE HELL? HOW DID THEY GET FROM “ah yes, moriarty the criminal mastermind” to fucking secret sister in an island prison that sherlock completely repressed the memory of because she killed his childhood friend that he replaced in his mind as a dog like what the fucking hell? just give him a goddamn dog
also back to mycroft, like.....the whole 3 seasons and tab he was like.......a dick but also like a respectable dude you know? idk how to describe it but he was smart and he did actually care about sherlock and idk like!!! in the 3rd season he was just dumb as shit. like remember how solemn he was when john was getting off the plane at the end of tab and mycroft was like “take care of him”? and then in s4 hes like fuckin some lady? whack!!! fucking stupid!!!!
s4 wasn’t all bad, here is a list of things i liked:
- when sherlock went to therapy, even if it was just in his mind
- sherlock with the dog
- i thought sherlock was sweet with the suicidal lady that came by (who i guess ended up to be his sister? DUMB, but i liked the scene where he threw her gun in the water)
WAIT WAIT WAIT. ALSO THE BABY. DUMB. WHY ADD A BABY IN THE MIX. IT’S SHERLOCK HOLMES AND JOHN WATSON. THAT’S IT. NOT SHERLOCK HOLMES AND JOHN WATSON AND BABY... ITS SO STUPID WHY WOULD THEY LEAVE IT LIKE THAT....ITS SO DUMB.
THE BABY SHOULD HAVE JUST BEEN FAKE. AND MARY SHOULD HAVE BEEN EVIL.
its so dumb like s4 ruined this show for me and the only way i can enjoy it now is to force myself to forget it its just :/
also remember when sherlock low key attempted suicide? like he didn’t think he was comin back on that plane, so he took a lot of drugs
AND MYCROFT THEN TOO WAS SO SOLEMN. LIKE HE ASKED FOR A LIST AND HE WAS SERIOUS AND HE CARED AND IN THE FOURTH SEASON ITSDIFJFASDFA;SLDFKJ;A ITS JUST DUMB!!!! ITS STUPID!!!! I HATE IT!!!!!
