Awful Mel and Jayce takes
Honestly this fandom has such a hate boner for Jayce and Mel it's so fucking stupid and tiring.
Please guys use your brains and stop labelling these characters as evil manipulators who only care about power and themselves. These takes make me contract hives just by looking at them.
I will bite you.
Jayce had no reason to try to commit suicide, his situation wasn't bad, he was just being dramatic
Tumblr media
Okay I'm not sure you can invalidate someone's feelings when they're committing something like this.
Let's get a rundown of the events that led to Jayce's decisions for this:
1. He was robbed and his apartment was blown up.
2. His life research was taken from him.
3. He went on trial where he was expelled from the Academy which he worked really hard to get in.
4. His own mother called him insane in front of the whole city (granted yes it was to gain sympathy from the Council for her son but like that still really hurts to have your own mother say that).
5. His patrons turn his back on him and his close friend (Caitlyn) isn't allowed to see him anymore.
Okay now that we got what Jayce was going through:
Jayce pretty much lost a lot that day. Sure he isn't exiled out of Piltover due to his mother but he's pretty much seen as a clown by everyone else. He may not even get a job after cause who'd want to hire someone who is known to experiment on very dangerous stuff, is said to be insane and even embarrassed himself in front of the council?
It pretty much was over for Jayce at that point and he was going to 100% jump had it not been for Viktor. It's why he's so thankful towards him in the first place! Jayce even described to Mel as "Viktor saved my life once.."
Honestly, can we just not excuse this as some manbaby behavior when it clearly isn't?
Jayce took the credit for hextech
Tumblr media
Took credit from who? Viktor? Lol no sorry. That isn't an argument with anything to stand on.
Jayce was the one we see who was first working on Hextech. He had the dream, the tools and was the only one who knew about the research. Viktor only came into the picture later to help Jayce as partners in science. That's why Viktor is so afraid of dying without a solid legacy. Why would he be scared if he was the credit owner of Hextech? He knows very well that he doesn't have rights to make claims that he started Hextech.
Jayce would never make hextech work without Viktor
Tumblr media
Jayce himself said that he was on the verge of breakthrough, he just needed a bit more time to figure out what he had to do.
Sure, Viktor told him that he had to spin it faster but even Jayce was already figuring that out beforehand.
Now Viktor has helped Jayce a lot and it woukd be shame to disregard that but to say that Jayce wouldn't had figured out how the gems worked without Viktor? Yeah not really. Viktor himself acknowledges that his contributions towards Hextech aren't as significant as Jayce's.
It was Jayce's idea all along and he kindly invited Viktor to join him on it.
Jayce is a bad friend
Tumblr media
I'm not sure how anyone who looks at Jayce's interactions with Caitlyn/Viktor can say he's a bad friend.
1. He respected Viktor from the moment they first met and even considers him on the same level ("He's my partner." "Our Hextech dream.").
2. He tries to give Caitlyn a new job aftet she lost her old one.
3. He tries to help Viktor with his illness and even came to his bedside after hearing about him collapsing.
4. Kicks Heimerdinger out the Council as he wanted to destroy the Hexcore which could save Viktor's life.
5. Doesn't snitch on Caitlyn for breaking a prisoner out nor does he try to stop her.
He cared A LOT about his friends. I wonder if people say he's a bad friend because of these two instances:
1. Sleeping with Mel while Viktor is dying: Wow yeah it's not like Jayce is own person who isn't tied to Viktor! Jayce 100% knew that Viktor was dying! Jayce should've had a sharp awareness to be by Viktor's side all the time!
Yeah fuck people who hate him for that.
2. Saying the Undercity is dangerous to Viktor: Hmmm okay can we understand that Piltover and Zaun were NOT in good terms especially during this time. Jayce does have some right to think that the Undercity is dangerous because they were literally attacked by someone from Undercity and stole the gemstone which can be used to make a weapon. In any case, Jayce only said it to Viktor in a heat of moment and immediately tried apologized to Viktor.
Is there privilege on Jayce's side to this? Yes, Jayce is privileged. However, Cait also had her biased views towards the undercity when she first came down ("That place looks like it has bodies buried in it." and "What? You have no parents?") Why only attack Jayce for this? Tsk tsk double standards.
Jayce was wrong to kick Heimerdinger out the Council
Tumblr media
Now I maybe getting a bit opinionated here...but I do think that Jayce had the right idea. Sure Heimerdinger was kinda right about Hextech being dangerous but he also was someone who refused to see the error of his ways.
Heimerdinger only sees the past and refuses to look foward. Even more, he doesn't acknowledge that humans don't live as long as he does (which Jayce rightfully points out). He even wants to destroy the hexcore despite the fact that it could save Viktor’s life! (I understand why he sees Hextech as dangerous due to his experiences with magic but-)
His negligence towards the undercity is one if the main factors as to why it became such a shithole in the first place. Piltover really did need a new leader who could understand humans and is willing to make a change. That someone wasn’t Heimerdinger.
Mel only has sex with Jayce to manipulate him
Tumblr media
We see time and time again that she does love Jayce (her longing stare at the blimp with his face on it, her support for his dream, her allowing herself to be vulnerable around him etc). The details are there, you just have to look.
Besides, what would she manipulate him for? Hextech? We've seen that she can get people on her side without going to the lengths of literally having sex with them and pretending to have feelings for them (see Hoskel).
She gives him his own choices and doesn't force him to do anything he doesn't want to (unless you try to count her making him on the council but even then it was really helpful to him because if he's on the Council, the other members can't disregard his opinions and he has more control over Hextech).
Stop labelling Mel as some generic, seductive manipulative woman.
Mel didn't ask for consent
Tumblr media
During the scene on the balcony, many people describe as "Ewwww Mel is taking adventage of Jayce ewwww"
"The Medardas usually only take from the world," she brushes his hand, "we aren't often in a position to give anything back." He looks up her and says "I couldn't have done it without you." This is when Mel decides to kiss him, and only starts to wrap her hands around him when he doesn't make an effort to move away.
He doesn't express any disgust with the hand touch or the kiss itself. Now you may ask, "Why was he surprised then?" Well clearly it isn't everyday when someone decides to kiss you. It's a normal reaction to such a thing.
He even comes back the next day and they even share the same bed in ep 8! Yeah this relationship has no consent 100%.
Mel was grooming Jayce for her mother
Tumblr media
We know very well that she doesn't like her mother. Why would she groom Jayce for her?
When she found out that Jayce and Ambessa had a chat, she went straight to her mother in anger and yelled "Stay away from Jayce!" This is the first time we see her angerily talk to her mother like this since she came to Piltover.
We know that Mel:
Doesn't want Jayce near Ambessa.
Doesn't want her mother to use Hextech.
Knows that her mother is selfish and only wants to start a war, the opposite of Jayce.
None of her behavior towards Ambessa even suggests that she wants Jayce to be used by Ambessa. Where is this take coming from?
Clearly you can see me going insane.
Mel is using Jayce to secure her power
Tumblr media
Good friend. She already has the power.
Many years before she even met Jayce in fact.
Why would she use him to secure her status if she already very clearly was the richest person and the most influential Councilor before she even met him? She doesn’t need him whatsoever for that.
Even so, she made Jayce apart of the council. On the same level of power as her.
I just don’t see how this take has any standing ground.
Huge thanks to: @eddawrites @edomeilair @synergetic-prose for your insights!
