au where a few days before coronation Loki's getting ready to do a sneaky sneaky and let the Frost Giants into Asgard. a servant comes and tells him that Heimdall wants to see him, and Loki's like ๐Ÿ˜… because there's no possible way Heimdall can know what he's planning, right?
so Loki gets there and he's like "what ๐Ÿ˜‘" (except probably not like that because he's a prince and also the epitome of don't be suspicious, don't be suspicious right now, but he really doesn't want to be here so if Heimdall could just hurry up and yell at him for something and then let him leave, that would be great :/)
Heimdall goes, "Thor's coronation is this week," to which Loki replies, "no shit, Heimdall" (no he doesn't but he wants to). and then Heimdall asks, "how are you feeling?" and Loki just looks at him like ????? because what the fuck does that mean? but Heimdall keeps waiting for an answer, so finally, Loki just says, "fine?" and tbh it's more of a question than an answer and at this point he's very confused
and then Heimdall goes, "this is a big change for you," and Loki's like "uhhhh not really? are you sure you're not looking for Thor? he's the new king, not me." and Heimdall goes, "this is a big change for you both, but Thor has support around every corner. you haven't had that. I know you understand that things are going to change when Thor becomes our new king. will you be okay?"
and nobody's actually asked him that before. Frigga's tried to make him feel included or tried to give him a little extra attention of late, but she's never tried to talk to him about it. nobody's told him before that he's allowed to have him own feelings and his own reservations about this. nobody's told him that he's allowed to be upset. certainly, nobody's asked him to talk about it.
now, Loki's never really called Heimdall a friend. he's a state-sanctioned nannie at best. but the fact that he thought to ask Loki how he's holding up when nobody else even seemed to notice how hard this has been for him? how lost and lonely he's felt as he watches his brother move up in the world and leave him in the dust? it genuinely might be the most thoughtful thing anyone's done for him in years.
so maybe he breaks down a little bit. maybe he sheds some tears and maybe he says something things so brutally honest, he never would have dreamed of admitting them otherwise. and maybe he'll look back on this for the rest of his life and cringe because he really hates to be this vulnerable, especially to Heimdall of all people. in the moment, it's the most cathartic thing he could ask for.
the coronation comes and goes, and he never does end up letting those frost giants into Asgard.
