I did it, I made my own deadline (just)! Here is the first of my five standalone Ao3versary request fics. This Haechan, enemies to lovers, workplace, fluffy-smut was requested by my lovely twitter moot @val0461 and I hope I did it justice. And just like that everything goes quiet. The silence hums through the meeting room like a particularly irate wasp trapped in a glass. This was not the way you had intended to start your Monday morning and you'll be damned if you have your week derailed this early.
"And what, pray tell, would be your suggestion?"
While the majority of your colleagues choose that moment to strategically focus intently on their laptops, a few daring eyes flick from you to the source of the tension: Lee Haechan, aka the thorn in your professional side since he was hired three months ago. He's leant forward, both elbows on the table and hands folded under his chin, a pencil woven between the fingers of one hand. His brown wavy hair falls in soft curls over his forehead until he brushes it back and tilts back in his chair. Smug git.
"Oh, I don't have one, I just don't think the ideas we've got so far will work. I vote we take the week to think about it and then reconvene with fresh eyes on Friday"
He smiles back at you like he hasn't just undermined your entire agenda and set your project back several days. The worst part about it is he is right. The current event plan was rushed and everyone including you knows it. He's always right. I can't stand this.
"Fine. One week." You nod to signal the end of the meeting, lingering for a while to finish typing up the minutes in the general milling about as people leave the room.
It takes you a few seconds to realise not everyone has left. Doyoung, your team leader, has come over and is leaning on the edge of the table to your right. Also, for some unfathomable reason, Haechan is still loitering smugly across from you in his leather chair. It's childish but you shoot him death glare before looking up and acknowledging Doyoung with a dazzling smile.
"Hey, what's up?"
Doyoung returns the smile but looks nervous for once, hand fiddling with his collar and not quite able to look you in the eye. His glasses have slipped slightly down his nose and you have to fight the urge to reach up and straighten them. He’s cute when he is disheveled.
"Oh, not much. I was just wondering if you wanted to grab a drink tonight… you know, to come up with new ideas."
Ah. You'd suspected Doyoung had had a crush on you for a little while but he hadn't been forward enough about it yet for you to politely turn him down. Not that you didn't think he was attractive. His long dark eyelashes had rendered you unfocused in more than one meeting. If his timing had been better, who knows? You just aren't the kind of woman to juggle multiple men at once.
"Sorry, Doyoung-ssi, I'm busy tonight. I'll pop in a half hour for us later in the week, you free Thursday afternoon?"
"Oh, okay, sure. You're coming to the team dinner Friday though right? I'll save you a seat."
You don't give up easy do you?
You settle for a neutral "I'll be there." and hope you haven't led him on. You also don’t want to spoil your good working relationship so you make sure to give him a friendly wave as he packs up and leaves. His gummy smile when he pushes up his glasses and walks out the door almost has you regretting your life choices. Almost.
The moment the door clicks shut behind Doyoung you drop your smile and pointedly return to your laptop. You try to focus so you can get done and go for lunch but the passive aggressive buzz of tension from the opposite end of the table has only increased.
"You two are friendly."
You roll your eyes at this, unwilling to stoop to Haechan’s level.
"We are polite and professional. Perhaps you should follow his example."
"Professional? Is that what you elder-millenials call it?"
That's it. You officially have zero fucks left to give and the way Haechan emphasised the word "elder" has sent you over the edge. Your work-mask slips off entirely and you slam your laptop shut. Haechan finally registers your anger and has sense to sit up straight and wipe the smirk off his face. You don't shout, you are far beyond that level of mad, instead your voice is quiet and ice-cold:
"I wouldn't expect an attention seeking child who interrupts his superiors to understand. Now, do you need me here to listen to your wingeing or am I free to go and completely rewrite the proposal that you so graciously torpedoed 10 minutes ago?"
"I…" for a split second it looks like he might apologise, but his ego gets in the way "It's not my fault the first one sucked." His words are arrogant but he's lost his earlier swagger. You just hold him with a look of disdain as you pack up your things and move to the door.
“Where are you going?”
“To get some work done. You are welcome to stay here and continue to sit your smugness. I hardly think you need me as an audience.” Shaking your head a little in despair you walk out the door, leaving Haechan alone and suddenly a little smaller in the empty room. Your only consolation from the exchange is the way you feel his eyes linger on your ass as you walk away.
