UPPING THE ANTE IN ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

Introduction: Engineering studies leads to civic, economic and intellectual growth of a nation. But the core aspect of engineering is to develop a new technology and bring technological advancement. One of the first engineering colleges in India - The Thomas Engineering college, was established in 1847 at Roorkee. Since then, technology has grown tremendously with respect to the teaching methods as well as usefulness to the society. Active Learning: Teaching engineering concepts must inspire innovation amongst the students, the current technology used in teaching have turned the monotonous method of teaching into a student-centric approach. Some of these are discussed below. Virtual Learning: The invention and evolution of computers, have changed the learning way – by giving the student an experience based learning. Students use laptops in college to study topics, simulate circuits, store pertaining files for examinations. While initially every subject demanded a book, now with just a single click on the mouse, the student is able to fetch the data. Augmented Reality: How will it be, to learn history by going into an era of time immemorial, and witness the wars and construction of monuments with our eyes? Well with the implementation of Augmented Reality, this can be realized. The idea is yet not actualized in Indian Universities, but once done will help us experience the finest way to learn complex concepts in engineering. MOOC Courses: The Massive Open and Online courses have emerged as one of the biggest sources of learning for, Indian students as well as office workers. The Government of India (GOI) has also taken an initiative in promoting this. In 2017, the GOI started a MOOC platform ‘SWAYAM’ with the intention of transporting education to the remotest areas. Reputed institutions like IITs and IIMs are amongst the host institutes that provide courses. Engineering Colleges and Societal Development: Latest Installations: Installing instruments with latest technology in engineering colleges, have provided opportunities for students to understand current industrial trends. Recently, in July 2018, ABB –the Switzerland based company has installed micro-grid with battery energy storage at IIT Roorkee as a part of Smart Campus development project. Further scientists at the college are testing a floating device that can produce electricity from flowing surface water in the rivers. Government Initiatives: While we discuss about colleges using world class technologies, there are a few of them that have not come up to the standards. The Ministry of Human Resource Development has formed a committee: QEEE( Quality Enhancement in Engineering Education). The committee’s main objective is to identify the problems in engineering colleges and help them attain the quality of premium institutes. Some of the premium engineering institutes in India are as follows.  Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay  Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi  Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur  Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani  Delhi Technological University, Delhi. Projects: Some of the mind blowing projects were done by students from the most coveted IITs. The innovativeness of the students tells about the quality of the content delivered to them. The projectsalso reveal the social concern of the student community. S340 is an E-scooter developed by students from IIT Madras. It charges quicker than a mobile phone and can travel about 50000 Kms. Two IIT Bombay alumni developed ‘re-writable t-shirts’. It was a success on e-commerce websites.
