Magical boy AU takao is an ordinary middle schooler who one day gets dragoon the magical spinning top from a cute little azure dragon, seiryuu, and transforms into a magical boy to protect the world from evil for some cosmic reasons that i haven't come up with yet. the rest of the characters have similar powers from their holy beasts and takao needs to gather up his team to fight the evil and. you get the drill is there art of it? yes 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 is there a fic of it? no note: i originally created this just because i like designing the outfits so i haven't planned the story much (this used to be my main focus but then 4kingdoms happened GJSDHGHSDG) i'd want to though, i'll get back to it eventually...at some point...... one of the charm points of this AU is that the holy beasts are these digimon-like animals that hang out with the characters and each have their own personalities.

Fairy tale monster AU takao and gramps live in a cabin in the middle of a forest full of monsters and takao decides one day to venture out to look for a silver-haired boy he once saw, he meets up with the other BBA characters one by one in the grim woods. is there art of it? no is there a fic of it? yes note: my oldest halloween fic. the characters are all these different cute spooky creatures and it's intended to sound like a fairy tale.

One day, he determined that the time was ripe: Takao decided to leave for an adventure. For his grandfather was old, it was not at all unusual for him to lay down to bed before sundown. Once the hut had fallen in drowsy silence, Takao packed his one and only bag with what little he felt he needed, took his cap and jacket, and stepped over the doorsill. He had left the safe warmth of the hut behind.

Royal fantasyverse AU (the tale of four kingdoms) takes place in a fantasy universe with four kingdoms (east, west, south & north) created by the four holy beasts, in an era where each kingdom happens to be ruled by an exceptionally young king due to their respective circumstances. when the four meet for the first time, a snowball of events is set in motion that's going to affect all four kingdoms. is there art of it? yes 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 is there a fic of it? yes 1 / 2 note: like a period drama with magic and gay and tons of worldbuilding. probably has way too many mysteries for the boys to solve because i have no self control when it comes to creating twists. this is The one AU that i have crammed every usable canon character into, i need enough people to inhabit four fucking countries

After creating the four lands, the holy beasts created people to inhabit them. Because the beasts were celestial beings and couldn't but guard people and the world they lived in from far above, they needed human vessels to lead the four nations. Thus they created four kings who would rule over other people using the four beast’s powers. The four kings were neither human nor gods, but something between – they were messengers, or icons, of the four holy beasts.

Omegaverse AU a canon divergence AU (i guess??) where genders are replaced by A/B/O and everyone being either canine or feline. max is a late bloomer canine and finds out he's the only alpha of the BBA boys thanks to a certain feline omega. is there art of it? not really but i do have dog boy max and cat boy rei art (which are a bit too cute for this kinkfest. i mean they're obviously aged up for the real thing.) 1 / 2 is there a fic of it? it's been in the works for like, five years but i always shy away from finishing it note: it's omegaverse, it's exactly what you'd expect. the smut is so filthy i've been too embarrassed to even post it. hiromi is also an alpha by the way

Coffee shop AU highschooler rei goes on a venture to hit on a local Hot University Teacher and coffee shop owner judy in a cafe owned by her, ends up receiving a bunch of flirty cups of latte from barista max working there. is there art of it? no is there a fic of it? yes note: i mean, rei being into blonde MILFs is pretty much canon

Now that Rei looked at the boy more carefully, he realised his hair was just as fair and eyes just as blue as he knew Judy Mizuhara's to be. Maybe they were related? It wasn't that strange if Judy had hired a relative's kid to help out at the shop, right? He certainly looked American, but he had spoken Japanese. And then, all of a sudden, the boy turned to look back to him. Startled, Rei blinked his own golden brown eyes and shifted them back to his now empty cup. God, it was rude to stare at someone, wasn't it? He'd been too deep in thought to even notice doing it. Not that the boy had looked judgmental – he only seemed to wear a smile.

Soulmate AU max keeps having dreams with peculiar scenarios about a boy named rei. one day he borrows a book on soulmates from hiromi and finds a chapter talking about meeting your soulmate in the realm of dreams. is there art of it? no is there a fic of it? yes note: i don't even care for soulmate AUs, this was my own dare to myself to find a single soulmate trope that interested in me enough to write a thing of it.

Max was walking through a crowded airport, carrying a heavy backpack with him. He had never been to this airport in his life, but somehow he knew exactly where he was, and where he was supposed to go. And he was in a hurry, and Rei had at some point emerged from the crowd, as usual, keeping up with him without bumping into any of the people that should have blocked his way. “I'm sorry, this is probably my fault,” Rei said. “I haven't even travelled in ages anymore, but these dreams just keep coming back to haunt me.”

Chess player AU rei is a young chinese chess champion participating in the world junior championships, ends up falling for the american chess prodigy max somehow in the process and is determined to get to play against him again. is there art of it? no is there a fic of it? yes note: so this is one of the weirder ones i've done. it was inspired simply by me having a very vivid mental image of a scene of them playing dramatic chess together. this is probably my most underrated AU even by myself, i think the writing is pretty solid for such a short story of a topic i know practically nothing about

As a child, Rei had initially been taught to play xiàngqí, a Chinese game much more popular back in his home country; but chess with its refined, uniquely shaped pieces was love at first sight for the young Rei. He was a fast thinker and had amazing concentration skills once he set his mind on something, and he also had an outstanding memory, making it easy to memorise game patterns he once saw and then use them for his advantage. This all granted him natural talent in chess. But despite his skill, he had a bad habit of easily losing his temper and becoming indecisive once his focus wavered. Also, he was just a tad bit too sentimental. These traits often became his worst enemy in important matches, much worse than the actual opposing player. Keep your cool. Focus. Play well.

Flower shop + fake dating AU yuriy doesn't really know anything about flowers but is working part-time in a flower shop for the easy cash. he keeps getting a pair of weird customers who ask about flower language for hypothetical situations. is there art of it? not by myself and i don’t have a link to the fanart made of it unfortunately is there a fic of it? yes note: did i write this for valentine's day? i feel like i maybe did. this is my only AU (and fic in general) so far that's about a non-BBA character as the main lmao

Classical music AU (the heart that i love) max is a piano prodigy attending a classical music college that holds annual music competitions for the students. he's got some haters for being the son of a world-known pianist who's one of the teachers, but he also ends up having a budding romance with rei the mysterious chinese violinist. is there art of it? yes 1 / 2 is there a fic of it? yes note: the origin of this was my "max and mao are besties" college AU. then it got mixed in with my thirst for classical instruments and max being bullied.

Max isn’t exactly a synesthet, but he has always been able to see music as pictures – as entire sceneries, as great adventures. This tendency of his emerges especially strong whenever he’s learning to play a new piece on the piano; as he moves along the melody, the scenery is also being built around him like a jigsaw puzzle, creating a complete picture piece by piece; and once he has mastered the song, he’s able to freely traverse and immerse himself in the world inside that puzzle. Some pieces have a more relaxed or soothing scenery than others, some are exciting and thrilling – even deliciously sinister in the way that a good horror film can be. Setting himself down in front of a piano is always an invitation to a world of his choice.

Bakeneko AU after moving to a small rural town in japan, max hits his head and starts seeing things, such as a weird white cat following him around. after a while, he's convinced that he's being haunted. is there art of it? yes is there a fic of it? yes note: another halloween AU, a more surreal one where max is human and rei is. well. not

Max kept walking, his eyes still on the narrow road. He hadn't noticed while deep in thought, but it really was quiet that evening. The sun had nearly set by now, leaving the sky striped with the dusk of the approaching nightfall. There was no wind to rustle the treetops, no birds chirping, nothing. Only the sound of Max's own footsteps on the pavement, and the matching sound that followed. Followed. What if someone actually was following him? A sudden, violent chill struck down Max's spine, causing his hair to stand on end. He stopped. After a short delay, the steps also stopped.

Genderbend AU a canon divergence AU where everyone's a different gender from canon (duh). starts off as an alternate version of the g-revolution world championships where the girls meet for the first time and befriend each other. rei is a professional model in addition to being a blader in the baihus, and max from the PPB is delighted to be able to battle her. she has no idea that rei has fallen for her at first sight, though. is there art of it? yes 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 is there a fic of it? it's... in the works. note: i created this because i wanted to design attractive girls, what about it. absolutely partial to maxine's huge badonkadonks.

It wasn’t like Rei hadn’t already taken notice of her before, given that they were participating in the same world championship tournament, but the real turning point was the first time they stood on the opposing sides of a bey stadium. It was the day when the match-up roster signalled the match between the Chinese team and the American team, the Baihus versus the PPB All Starz; and despite both teams consisting of five players, it came down to, to Rei’s immense joy, the tag team of Rai and herself against the two most interesting US players, Rikki Anderson and Mizuhara Maxine.

Vampire & merboy AU rei is a starved vampire just about to end his own life when he meets merboy max at a forest lake. is there art of it? of max yes is there a fic of it? yes note: yet another halloween monster AU, this time they are both monsters though. this one’s a pretty grim one i have to admit

Rei succumbed into deep thought, considering his few options, when something grabbed his unsuspecting hand. Something yanked him forward in one mad splash and forced not only the rest of his arm but also his shoulders and head underwater. Half a second later Rei, so badly startled that he’d come close to slipping into insanity, found himself staring at a pair of bright blue eyes only inches away from his own face. His other hand and lower body still firmly on land, Rei pulled himself back with strength that he didn’t even know his weak body still contained. As he did, he also pulled up whatever was clutching his hand, which turned out to be another hand – a white hand with elongated, dirty fingers, so sharp at the tips that they looked like daggers.

Mafia AU max is the boss of the BBA mafia family, rei is a hitman and max's right hand man, the rest have various roles in the organisation. salima, mariam and some other girls (at least) are reporters doing investigative journalism on organised crime who get interested in covering the story of a group of russian elite detectives doing a thorough investigation of the BBA. is there art of it? of rei and max yes 1 / 2 / 3 is there a fic of it? it's in the works but it's just a gratuitous reimax smut note: this is a story i wish existed but this kind of police investigation action thing is so not my genre of expertise. that's why i'm just doing a PWP of my boys and the rest exists on conceptual level

From the very beginning you can see which path is the preferred freaking option, Its In Hushed Whispers and not the other one.

Besides it would make more sense for the sake of continuity to find out about the rift, time magic, who’s the mastermind behind what happened in Redcliff Village (Alexius tricked Fiona and other mages with time magic and blood magic to signed up with Tevinter) AND HOW FUTURE WITH CORYPHEUS WON LOOKS LIKE, rather than I don’t know.....Whatever bullshit in Therinfal Redoubt.

SECOND. Free alliances with rebel mages definitely would give The inquisition more advantages, first mages knew how to deal with magic and the fade, mages are more suited and powerful to fight against enemies that cannot be defeated by shield and swords.

THERE WERE NO ACCIDENT, NO UNWANTED POSSESSION OR EVEN NO POSSESSION AT ALL, NO DISASTER, AND NO ‘ABOMINATION’ .

3. Mage Orphan who has no relatives/family/home/ or friends to return could stay with College of Enchanters with other mages.

4. No more children will be kidnapped from the parents, no more mother who will lose their mage baby again because the templar and chantry ripped their baby away from their arms, never again.

5. New Generations of Mages kids who never have to endure torture and abuses in the circle, they can grow up in a safe and happy environment with their family or with the college.

6. Mages actively participated in society, and they can invent a great many things for Thedas modernization and advancement, remember Zither? He’s a mage and he uses his magic to play in a band, imagine the possibilities of Thedas technology-magic advancement with unrestrained magic, boi based on the newest leak, it seems like Arlathan was a magical cyberpunk empire. 

7. As a free citizen, many mages abilities/ skill can be implemented for different kinds of jobs, hey remember Lysas who wanted to be a mage farmer? Agriculture in Thedas could be improved with magic, Medication, and medical studies could be greatly modernized with magic, not to mention fashion, opera/plays, and music, hell even professional chef jobs will be much easier with magic, The inquisitor used telekinesis/spell to fixes broken bridges, and lit a veil fire are another example that magic could be used for mundane stuff and not just for

8. College of Enchanters definitely would be a steadfast ally for The Inquisition and The inquisitor, and not to mention that the Inquisition new operations area would be in the north/Tevinter, mages would be able to help greatly.  9. With templar order gone forever in southern Thedas, then there will be no more people who are force feed lyrium and suffer from lyrium addiction to the point they become a beggar because they wasted all of their coins for lyrium. 10. So mages now are free, no more circle, then what’s the point of templar or seeker anymore? Actually Seeker, circle and templar are never needed, then how southern Thedas  should handle with magic related crime or just crime in general, well I’ts easy, you see mages guard in Tamriel world? You know those guards in Skyrim? Or guard/law enforcer in Warcraft world who use magic? With mages free they also can work as guards

The interpretation of chant of light that mages and nonhuman are abhorred by the maker, and they are ‘evil’ and corrupt’ i must remind you that MODERN and RELEVANT andrastianism in modern Thedas, has twisted whatever Andraste said and they strayed so far away from what andraste possibly could have wanted. 

What if Maferath Betrayal was not based on maliciousness? Or not just based on maliciousness? What if Andraste was truly a mage? The chantry lied about Shartan, the chantry fucking lied about Ameridan, if there’s one IRONIC TRUTH about the chantry, they lied, they twisted story and histories for their political power and their gains.

the whole ‘magic must serve man and not rule over him’ was purposely misinterpreted to fucking justify drakon fucking fanfic holy book, and his campaign to conquer the rest of Thedas. And the chant verses were twisted as a stupid and terrible justification to demonize and enslaved mages and elves in circle towers. 

In a nutshell that chant actually said that magic is a gift that should not be used for terrible deeds. But andrastian changed the meaning and twisted their own prophet words to enslave and oppressed southern mages.

2. The chantry believes about Everything that related to the fade/spirits/ or demon are dangerous and inherently evil, I ALWAYS LAUGHED MY ASS OFF, whenever templar/chantry/andrastian/non mages spouting hateful shits about the fade and spirits, it’s incredibly ironic, because there’s an implication that ALL PEOPLE who were not made by Titans (dwarves was made by titan) were spirits from the fade who ‘created body from the earth’ after they descended to the material world.

The evanuris, first of elven people, Solas and his people were spirits, it can be safely assumed that modern elves, humans and qunari in their truest form are spirits as well. 

 I think during his personal quest, All New Faded forFor Her, Aka The Dreadwolf Fen’harel, Solas has explained the truth about what human, elves and qunari truly are and what is their true form would be once they are died ( if they are not a remarkable person then they will simply be lost to the fade ) 

Besides it’s the chantry who spread hateful and ignorant propaganda about evil of spirits/demons, the fact that chantry spread such misinformed propaganda and derailed hates of the fade and spirit into people mind actually is one of the reasons why demons and unwilling possession as modern thedas know it exists, I know Cole explained that  spirit who crossed from the fade to the world was simply traumatized by their journey, the veil hurt them ( we can blame Solas for that) rules in the material world is just confusing, the earth and it’s mostly inflexible and unchanging rules confused them.

But if The fade can be bend and shaped by powerful dreamer/mages/ dreams and believes of people. That means...Demons were also created by The chantry ignorant and hateful propaganda. If many people believed that spirits are dangerous or ‘they are demon’, that spirits and the fade are scary then that’s how they will manifest.

The fade and spirit can be influenced by people's collective beliefs and perceptions. That’s mean it also The chantry and their dogmatic backward propaganda that made spirit/demon as we know it today, I mean for some reason Cole called himself a ‘demon’? Oh, Solas where are thou ~

Now about Solas and the veil, we might speculate to our heart content about Solas plans and what he might do in the future, but to be honest, truth to be told, NO ONE EXACTLY KNOW what is his actual plan for the evanuris, for the blight, for titans and to tear m down the veil. We only have morsels of information about his plans from trespasser, and Tevinter night (also from the leaks).  Who knew maybe Solas plan will ironically save the world? Doomed it? Saved some people? Only doomed half of the world? Will the world end? People might object that algorithms could never make important decisions for us, because important decisions usually involve an ethical dimension, and algorithms don’t understand ethics. Yet there is no reason to assume that algorithms won’t be able to outperform the average human even in ethics. Already today, as devices like smartphones and autonomous vehicles undertake decisions that used to be a human monopoly, they start to grapple with the same kind of ethical problems that have bedevilled humans for millennia.

For example, suppose two kids chasing a ball jump right in front of a self-driving car. Based on its lightning calculations, the algorithm driving the car concludes that the only way to avoid hitting the two kids is to swerve into the opposite lane, and risk colliding with an oncoming truck. The algorithm calculates that in such a case there is a 70 percent chance that the owner of the car - who is fast asleep in the back seat - would be killed. What should the algorithm do?

Philosophers have been arguing about such ‘trolley problems' for millennia (they are called 'trolley problems’ because the textbook examples in modern philosophical debates refer to a runaway trolley car racing down a railway track, rather than to a self-driving car).“ Up until now, these arguments have had embarrassingly little impact on actual behaviour, because in times of crisis humans all too often forget about their philosophical views and follow their emotions and gut instincts instead. One of the nastiest experiments in the history of the social sciences was conducted in December 1970 on a group of Students at the Princeton Theological Seminary, who were training to become ministers in the Presbyterian Church. Each student was asked to hurry to a distant lecture hall, and there give a talk on the Good Samaritan parable, which tells how a Jew travelling from Jerusalem to Jericho was robbed and beaten by criminals, who then left him to die by the side of the road. After some time a priest and a Levite passed nearby, but both ignored the man. In contrast, a Samaritan - a member of a sect much despised by the Jews - stopped when he saw the victim, took care of him, and saved his life. The moral of the parable is that people’s merit should be judged by their actual behaviour, rather than by their religious affiliation.

The eager young seminarians rushed to the lecture hall, contemplating on the way how best to explain the moral of the Good Samaritan parable. But the experimenters planted in their path a shabbily dressed person, who was sitting slumped in a doorway with his head down and his eyes closed. As each unsuspecting seminarian was hurrying past, the 'victim’ coughed and groaned pitifully. Most seminarians did not even stop to inquire what was wrong with the man, let alone offer any help. The emotional stress created by the need to hurry to the lecture hall trumped their moral obligation to help strangers in distress.

Human emotions trump philosophical theories in countless other situations. This makes the ethical and philosophical history of the world a rather depressing rale of wonderful ideals and less than ideal behaviour. How many Christians actually turn the other cheek, how many Buddhists actually rise above egoistic obsessions, and how many Jews actually love their neighbours as themselves? That’s just the way natural selection has shaped Homo sapiens. Like all mammals, Homo sapiens uses emotions to quickly make life and death decisions. We have inherited our anger, our fear and our lust from millions of ancestors, all of whom passed the most rigorous quality control tests of natural selection.

Unfortunately, what was good for survival and reproduction in the African savannah a million years ago does not necessarily make for responsible behaviour on twenty-first-century motorways. Distracted, angry and anxious human drivers kill more than a million people in traffic accidents every year. We can send all our philosophers, prophets and priests to preach ethics to these drivers - but on the road, mammalian emotions and savannah instincts will still take over. Consequently, seminarians in a rush will ignore people in distress, and drivers in a crisis will run over hapless pedestrians.

This disjunction between the seminary and the road is one of the biggest practical problems in ethics. Immanuel Kant, John Swart Mill and John Rawls can sit in some cosy university hall and discuss theoretical problems in ethics for days - but would their conclusions actually be implemented by stressed-out drivers caught in a split-second emergency? Perhaps Michael Schumacher - the Formula One champion who is sometimes hailed as the best driver in history - had the ability to think about philosophy while racing a car; but most of us aren’t Schumacher.

Computer algorithms, however, have not been shaped by natural selection, and they have neither emotions nor gut instincts. Hence in moments of crisis they could follow ethical guidelines much better than humans - provided we find a way to code ethics in precise numbers and statistics. If we teach Kant, Mill and Rawls to write code, they can carefully program the self-driving car in their cosy laboratory, and be certain that the car will follow their commandments on the highway. In effect, every car will be driven by Michael Schumacher and Immanuel Kant rolled into one.

Thus if you program a self-driving car to stop and help strangers in distress, it will do so come hell or high water (unless, of course, you insert an exception clause for infernal or high-water scenarios). Similarly, if your self-driving car is programmed to swerve to the opposite lane in order to save the two kids in its path, you can bet your life this is exactly what it will do. Which means that when designing their self-driving car, Toyota or Tesla will be transforming a theoretical problem in the philosophy of ethics into a practical problem of engineering.

Granted, the philosophical algorithms will never be perfect. Mistakes will still happen, resulting in injuries, deaths and extremely complicated lawsuits. (For the first time in history, you might be able to sue a philosopher for the unfortunate results of his or her theories, because for the first time in history you could prove a direct causal link between philosophical ideas and real-life events.) However, in order to take over from human drivers, the algorithms won’t have to be perfect. They will just have to be better than the humans. Given that human drivers kill more than a million people each year, that isn’t such a tall order. When all is said and done, would you rather the car next to you was driven by a drunk teenager, or by the Schumacher-Kant team?

The same logic is true not just of driving, but of many other situations. Take for example job applications. In the twenty-first century, the decision whether to hire somebody for a job will increasingly be made by algorithms. We cannot rely on the machine to set the relevant ethical standards - humans will still need to do that. But once we decide on an ethical standard in the job market - that it is wrong to discriminate against black people or against women, for example - we can rely on machines to implement and maintain this standard better than humans. A human manager may know and even agree that it is unethical to discriminate against black people and women, but then, when a black woman applies for a job, the manager subconsciously discriminates against her, and decides not to hire her. If we allow a computer to evaluate job applications, and program the computer to completely ignore race and gender, we can be certain that the computer will indeed ignore these factors, because computers don’t have a subconscious. Of course, it won’t be easy to write code for evaluating job applications, and there is always a danger that the engineers will somehow program their own subconscious biases into the software. Yet once we discover such mistakes, it would probably be far easier to debug the software than to rid humans of their racist and misogynist biases.

We saw that the rise of artificial intelligence might push most humans out of the job market - including drivers and traffic police (when rowdy humans are replaced by obedient algorithms, traffic police will be redundant). However, there might be some new openings for philosophers, because their skills - hitherto devoid of much market value - will suddenly be in very high demand. So if you want to study something that will guarantee a good job in the future, maybe philosophy is not such a bad gamble. Of course, philosophers seldom agree on the right course of action. Few 'trolley problems’ have been solved to the satisfaction of all philosophers, and consequentialist thinkers such as John Stuart Mill (who judge actions by consequences) hold quite different opinions to deontologists such as Immanuel Kant (who judge actions by absolute rules). Would Tesla have to actually take a stance on such knotty matters in order to produce a car?

Well, maybeTesla will just leave it to the market. Tesla will produce two models of the self-driving car: the Tesla Altruist and the Tesla Egoist. In an emergency, the Altruist sacrifices its owner to the greater good, whereas the Egoist does everything in its power to save its owner, even if it means killing the two kids. Customers will then be able to buy the car that best fits their favourite philosophical view. If more people buy the Tesla Egoist, you won’t be able to blame Tesla for that. After all. the customer is always right.

This is not a joke. In a pioneering 2015 study people were presented with a hypothetical scenario of a self-driving car about to run over several pedestrians. Most said that in such a case the car should save the pedestrians even at rhe price of killing its owner. When they were then asked whether they personally would buy a car programmed to sacrifice irs owner for the grearet good, most said no. For themselves, they would prefer the Tesla Egoist.

Imagine the situation: you have bought a new car, bur before you can start using it, you must open the settings menu and tick one of several boxes. In case of an accident, do you want the car to sacrifice your life - or to kill the family in the other vehicle? Is this a choice you even want to make? Just think of the arguments you are going to have with your husband about which box to tick.

So maybe the state should intervene to regulate the market, and lay down an ethical code binding all self-driving cars? Some lawmakers will doubtless be thrilled by the opportunity to finally make laws that are always followed to the letter. Other lawmakers may be alarmed by such unprecedented and totalitarian responsibility. After all, throughout history the limitations of law enforcement provided a welcome check on the biases, mistakes and excesses of lawmakers. It was an extremely lucky thing that laws against homosexuality and against blasphemy were only partially enforced. Do we really want a system in which the decisions of fallible politicians become as inexorable as gravity?

Ronaldo and Messi could deliver epic Champions League showdown

They were calling Lionel Messi Lyon's demolition his answer to Cristiano Ronaldo 'in Barcelona on Thursday. It was more of the old 'anything you can do I can do better' that the two kept up during nine years of rivalry in Spain .

But Messi's more literal answer to Ronaldo came after the game when he was asked what he thought of his performance against Atletico and he said: 'I thought that what happened with Cristiano and Juventus was incredible. Juventus overwhelmed them and Cristiano had a magical night. "

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde was asked in his press conference if it would be fitting if the two were to meet again in the Champions League this season.

Desperate not to lean towards wanting, or not wanting, any one team in particular in Friday's draw , he still couldn't stop himself saying that it would be an 'extraordinary' game. Even more so if it were the final.

We never got that Ronaldo vs Messi winner-takes-all when they played for La Liga's biggest two teams but it would be some climax to this season's competition.

The two swapping red and blue, and black and white, shirts in the center circle at the Metropolitano would be an image for the ages – one to rival the Bobby Moore Pele embrace.

For the neutrals La Liga has not missed Ronaldo this year because Madrid's collapse without him has been fascinating to watch.

Real Madrid supporters have missed the goals – they scored 94 last term, with 11 games left they have scored just 47. They will never be top last season's haul now, not without the player who scored 450 goals in his 438 games for them in nine years.

Ronaldo and Messi have both fatherhood and run-ins with the Spanish tax authorities now. And they are also facing the final seasons of their career, neither with the slightest inkling towards lucrative moves away from top European football.

Part of that may be down to the way Benzema is no longer beside him. For nine years Real Madrid was designed to be the perfect vehicle for Ronaldo's scoring prowess. It was never going to be quite the same elsewhere.

Messi's goals and assists this season have not dropped but he started given the ball away more than ever before. In Barcelona's last league game, against Rayo Vallecano he lost possession 31 times and played 14 passes that never found their target.

Neither Ronaldo nor Messi are what they were five years ago but their ability to totally control the destiny of their sides in the really big encounters remains. And with both their clubs clear in their leagues they will be able to rest in league games and concentrate their powers on the big European prize.

It's 10 years since they started their struggle for supremacy in Spain. A decade later they are still the best two players in the world. Maybe there is one more titanic European battle to be had between them – what has already been a brilliant Champions League season would be all the better for it happening.

ON THE GAME’S ENDING.

I waited until the DLC was released to make this post out of fairness, but seeing as it did not take place post-game as many were expecting, my position on the ending has remained the same.

I’ll be blunt: I was NOT pleased with the ending of BOTW. If you liked the ending, then that’s perfectly fine!! I’m really happy you enjoyed it, and I wish I could feel the same. But unfortunately, I felt it was a severe let down after seeing the amazing gameplay and characters that were presented to us. I’ll expand upon my thoughts more under the cut.

There are two parts to this: what I thought of the ending, and what I wish the ending would have been.

LETS TALK ABOUT THOSE PLOT HOLES.

Yes, Zelda games and timelines are often FILLED with plot holes. They have limited time and game opportunities to explain every little thing to us, and I don’t expect them to make a comprehensive world guide for each game explaining how every part of the world works. 

HOWEVER. BOTW gave us questions, and the ending answered maybe one of them. I say one, because you could ask yourself “Is Zelda okay?” but at the end of the day, it’s a LoZ game. There’s never a real sense of ‘oh no! Zelda might die!’ because the games always end the same way -- Link saves the princess and typically, they defeat Ganon together. Sure, she’s in danger; sure, something bad could happen to her. But is she going to die? No. There’s nothing in the previous LoZ formula that would make you think so. So it’s basically a given that she’s going to be okay. 

But BOTW threw out the old formula -- they made the game open world. You could tackle challenges in any order, you never had to wait to do ONE dungeon in order to access something. There was voice acting, and so many new features of gameplay that made it something fresh and new while retaining its familiarity. The game didn’t pull any punches; the fights were HARD unless you did tons of shrines for heart containers, leveled up your armor all the way, and had buff food/potions. But otherwise? You’d get knocked flat on your butt. You’d get very familiar with the game over screen.

It’s a game clearly designed for a more mature audience; it takes you, the player, seriously. 

So when you hear Zelda’s voice for the first time, you might think she’s speaking to you through the Sheikah Slate -- sort of like in Wind Waker. But you learn very quickly that she’s calling out to you from within the castle. That’s VERY important to keep in mind.

Remember the Divine Beasts; the moment you step foot onto one, you hear the respective Champion’s voice. They’re no where to be seen, but they tell you about the map and a basic run down of how to proceed. That’s the same thing Zelda did. Except, the Champions were SPIRITS. So it makes sense that they have some degree of dominion over their beasts.

But what about Zelda? She’s not a spirit. So why is she able to speak to you from such a vast distance? Why is she able to give you a heads up about the Blood Moon every time, no matter where you are in the world? She says she’s been watching over Link, but how could she have done that? The game doesn’t explain. Not a word about it.

The game makes her omnipresent, but that makes no sense within the context of the game. If she could speak to Link, why couldn’t she speak to the Champions? They were able to speak even before their beasts were released from Ganon’s control, so why couldn’t her and her friends chat for those 100 years instead of them all being alone? If it were because of the beasts’ influences for some reason, why couldn’t she speak to her father, who was just hanging around on the Great Plateau? 

The only way this makes sense is if ZELDA HERSELF WERE A SPIRIT. Hyrule Castle has the same map mechanics as the Divine Beasts, and it would make sense that as a spirit she would have power and dominion over the lands of Hyrule, enabling her to speak to Link even across great distances. The Champions retained their abilities for one hundred years and then they passed them down to Link; they never stated they would ever lose them. They never said there was a time limit, or that their powers were fading. So it would fit the storyline if Zelda’s sealing power also remained with her as a spirit, and she was able to use it to keep Ganon at bay for a century. 

This would also explain why Zelda did not age. You may think -- “But in Skyward Sword, Zelda sealed herself away for even longer than a hundred years and she didn’t age either!” And that’s true, but in SS, Zelda sealed herself away within a crystal. She wasn’t conscious, she didn’t speak to anyone. She was in a state of Stasis, as Link was for the hundred years before the game takes place. So it makes sense that neither SS Zelda nor BOTW Link aged, but there’s no reason why BOTW Zelda didn’t. 

When Zelda makes her appearance in the ending, she comes flying out. She levitates, casually descending as if she’s done it a thousand times. She appears cloaked in glowing golden light all around her -- just like the spirits, save their lights were green and hers was gold. But that would make sense, given that she’s the goddess-blooded princess/Hylia reborn/whatever. 

But that light dissipates, and she’s -- just fine? She summons basically a sun, and then is like -- ‘anyway! whatever, moving on.’ Even SS Zelda, who was just asleep, not conscious and actively fighting to keep Ganon at bay, collapses when she awakens. She’s tired. But BOTW Zelda doesn’t even get to have her moment of ‘oh thank goodness it’s finally over now I can rest.’

You’d think of all the characters, it would be BOTW Zelda who got that moment, given her character arc is about her struggling under the weight of her destiny. It’s about her finding herself and her path and having this amazing inner strength despite all the terrible things she went through. But the game doesn’t even give her that. And it keeps her alive, and for what reason? 

Because if Zelda died, she couldn’t continue the Hyrule line. That’s it. Zelda has all the traits of the spirits, but the game gives her plot-armor and magically keeps her alive so she can have children. Because the game team didn’t want to say BOTW was the last game in the ‘timeline,’ even though they don’t make the games in order anyway, so it wouldn’t mean anything if they made it the bookend for the series. 

IMAGINE THE ENDING IF ZELDA WERE A SPIRIT.

You beat down Ganon, and she comes out in that golden light and creates a little orb with the royal crest on it -- almost like when Link got the other Champion’s powers. Instead of giving it to link, she forces it into the weakened Ganon, sealing his existence from within himself. In doing so, she loses the holy powers passed down to her by the goddess, but Ganon is gone forever, hooray!

The skies start to clear and the sun comes through the clouds over the castle -- peace at last! The camera pans to Zelda, and her name pops up as it did with the other Champions -- “PRINCESS ZELDA” and below that, “The Last Princess of Hyrule.”

King Rhoam had “The Last King of Hyrule” beneath his name, so it would be a great callback to that, and put it in a different light. The player thought he was the former king of Hyrule at the beginning of the game, but now with Zelda being a spirit it becomes clear they are the last of their line. There may be a new royal family to lead Hyrule someday, but the kingdom’s rulers will no longer be those who descended from the Goddess herself. 

So Zelda reveals herself to be a spirit, and then the Champions appear in the background ( blurry at first, since the focus is on Zelda. ) She says she’s been watching over him, praying for his safety, but she doesn’t ask “Do you remember me?” she says instead -- “You really are the hero I remembered all this time.” Even if the player didn’t get all the memories, they’ll know it doesn’t matter; because courage is never forgotten. He is still Link, noble and kind and courageous even if he doesn’t remember her. So she doesn’t need to ask.

She turns and walks to stand in the center of the Champions, all of them facing Link. They each give a final parting line, and when they are finished Zelda thanks him for all he’s done, and then smiles and calls him the HERO OF HYRULE. 

She and the Champions turn and walk towards the castle, disappearing in the order you cleared the Divine Beasts until Zelda is alone, but she keeps walking. The camera pans to her feet, and then she stops, and it zooms out to reveal the King’s feet just ahead of her. She turns one last time to look at Link, and she simply nods, then turns back towards her father. Link starts running as fast as he can towards the castle, and you see Zelda and the King go through the front door. Link makes it there, breathing heavily, but when he walks in the room is empty. 

He sighs and looks down, then turns back and looks out towards Hyrule. It pans over the landscape, and shows people coming out of houses and the stables, looking towards the sky and the castle. The white stallion that was a descendent of Zelda’s horse comes up the pathway to the castle, and Link gets on, riding off towards the now free land of Hyrule as the camera zooms out and the logo appears. 

If you got all the memories, then instead of the additional cutscene, there is muted footage of Link, Zelda, and the Champions traveling together pre-calamity that plays during the credits. They’re shown talking and laughing together, cooking at a campfire, etc... Either way, after the credits, Link is shown returning the Master Sword to it’s pedestal while the epilogue track plays softly in the background. 

The loose ends are tied up, and the player is shocked. They saved Zelda from her century long battle, but they didn’t save her life. Her life ended one hundred years ago when they failed to beat Ganon the first time. It’s implied without her goddess-powers, she won’t reincarnate again. But with her sacrifice, Ganon was vanquished for good. Peace reigns in Hyrule, and Link is left to watch over it. It’s a bittersweet ending, and something new. A break from tradition, just as the gameplay had been.
