Luck, fishing, and Will failing to listen. A purposeful shift in conversation, from Will's family to the dogs. "The rest stay and get to be big ones." Hannibal already grew up to be one of the big cats. Will hasn't. His life with Molly and Walter served its own purpose. "The Jacobis were the first to help him, the first to lift him into the glory of his becoming." To find the common factor in how he chooses his families, Will would have to know Francis as Hannibal knows Will. Connecting will only take him so far. Francis ate the watercolor because he's fighting to be stronger than the Dragon. Their wills need to be one, otherwise it's a zero-sum game: The Dragon wins while Francis loses. If Hannibal were fostering dependency with Will, he wouldn't be pushing for the lion. Their wills need to be one. The point of killing Francis together as he wanted them to kill Mason. It's not about control, but equal desire. Will's becoming is different just as he and Francis are.
Jack is partnered with Freddie. She offered her help, but Will wouldn't take it, so she went with what the "federal official" told her. Police aren't federal officials. They're state, county, and local. It's a repeat of season two, but without the excuses. Jack basically pulled Will back into his 2x13 split-screen. "You think you've moved your pieces around so cleverly." He's proud of himself, of this live exhibition. Hannibal hands Francis the option of tossing the Dragon to someone else because he already knows he's gonna choose Will. "Will Graham interests me." Molly sits on the porch with her coffee. "Why should the cold stop what common sense couldn't?" The icicles are melting as Hannibal lights the fire. Common sense switch, following their conversation about the symbol. "The character also appears on a mahjong tile. Marks the Red Dragon." Hannibal enticed Will to go to the museum. This episode, Hannibal shifts because it's Francis' move. "A lucky sign." That's why Will's dogs may have eaten food made from China. Hannibal tells Will he's fortune's fool, but Will fails to see what he's really telling him. Hannibal handed Francis the only address he had, and enticed him with the knowing that Will has a family. Will doesn't wanna listen, he wants to assume Hannibal treated him as he treated Randall. Hannibal doesn't know who he is, only his next target.
Teacups and time and the rules of disorder. Will's tone says enough. Blaming Hannibal doesn't remove blame from others, and he's well aware of Jack's role. "Resentment's raising a blister in you, Will." That blister is gonna burst. I love how Jack assumes he's in control, barking orders as if Hannibal has to follow them. "When he calls, you keep him on the line." Hannibal is raising hell because it's raising a blister in Will, he simply has to choose the right side of his split-screen. Hannibal was already pissed with Jack's choice to put Will in TattleCrime. He feels Will suffered enough, Jack's the one who has room for a few more scars. "You're not the only one who keeps their promises, Hannibal." I like Alana's dialogue because it pushes back to Jack's promise as they scene cut to Molly in the hospital. "Nobody to blame but myself. And Jack Crawford. I do blame Jack Crawford."
I consider Will's scene with Molly a break-up scene. It pushes back to Gideon's scene with Hannibal in 2x6. Gideon knew more than enough, Molly didn't. "It's tough to hold onto anything good. It's all so slippery." Hannibal basically took "good Will" out of her hands and told her, "He belongs to me." There's no competing with a serial killer, and she knows it. "Ugliness is found in the faces of the crowd." Like the fisherman watching Will's cork move against the current. "He didn't murder those families. He changed them." Francis changed them instead of himself, changed them so he could see his own reflection. Will is already having dreams about killing Molly. “As the Dragon grows in strength and glory, there are families to come." Same with the lion. "The rest stay and get to be big ones."
