Unique: Barcelona would suffer a huge blow if Man United swoop for 4-goal veteran - opinion
This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…
Arturo Vidal is very much a proven winner.
The now 32-year-old Chilean midfielder has already played for a selection of the creme de la creme teams in Europe, including Bayern Munich, Juventus and now Barcelona.
And not only that but he has also won basically everything there is to win at club level. Wherever he has been he has been a success, and his brilliant haul of countless silverware from all those teams – including a total of 11 domestic league titles – can surely attest to that.
But Vidal is not happy at Barcelona.
Or rather, he would gladly stay but his current situation is making that choice rather difficult. Just recently, he spoke to TV3 (quoted by Daily Mail) and hinted that he might leave in January if his fortune doesn’t turn:
“A lot of games have gone by where I haven’t played and this makes me sad. You have to be objective and live from day to day. If, by December or when the season finishes, I don’t feel important, I will have to make a decision and look for another place to go and be important.”
This statement, along with his recent links to Manchester United, are sure to send a warning signal to the Catalans.
FCInternews reported at the end of last month that Woodward and Fernando Felicevich, the player’s agent, have a good relationship and this may be enough to get the deal over the line.
Of course, Vidal still has about 18 months left on his contract and is only valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, so he should definitely be an attainable target for the Red Devils.
Barcelona, however, shouldn’t be looking to offload him just yet.
With the talk of Ivan Rakitic possibly searching for a new home in January as well, Vidal’s departure would suddenly leave them without that extra strength and heart in the middle of the park.
Of course, they have the young force of Frenkie de Jong and Arthur Melo but no one in their squad has an engine and the warrior mentality quite like that of Vidal.
With four goals and one assist already to his name, he is the midfielder with the highest goal contribution in the team and is the joint-highest when it comes to tackling with 2.3 on average in La Liga.
By all means, Vidal looks like a well-rounded option for Ernesto Valverde and quite a unique one at that.
The fact that he offers something different, and something that’s quite obviously beneficial to the team, makes him a player they can’t afford to lose.
It also makes it easy to understand why Manchester United have taken an interest in him.
With Paul Pogba still looking poised to leave and a relatively young squad at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s disposal, Vidal would definitely be a welcoming sight.
It remains to be seen if they can actually snatch the player away from Blaugrana’s hands.

Barcelona could find Sergio Busquets' heir by landing £51m Man United target - opinion
This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…
At first sight, Barcelona don’t really seem like a club with an old squad.
After all, their current average age stands at 26.5 as per Transfermarkt and that, although not the youngest, is still far from alarming, isn’t it?
But upon further inspection, we can see that the main hub of that team is really getting on. All of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique, Ivan Rakitic and Sergio Busquets are already on the wrong side of their 30s and not getting any younger.
Watch Spanish Football Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below
And while the inevitable departure of Messi seems like a catastrophe waiting to happen, the Blaugrana might also run into trouble once Busquets calls it a day.
Of course, the signing of Frenkie de Jong could help but Ernesto Valverde has so far played the young Dutchman in that defensive midfielder role only six times out of 18 games in total that Transfermarkt have in their database, which could indicate that the Barcelona boss prefers to have him further up the pitch instead.
For that reason, their recent links to Rennes 17-year-old prodigy, Eduardo Camavinga, don’t really come as a surprise and seem like a rather good idea.
L’Equipe (via Mundo Deportivo) stated the French club will ask for around €60m (£51m) for their gem and Barcelona could face some competition from Manchester United as well.
But looking at the young talent, he really does seem worth the hassle.
After all, he has already played a total of 23 games for Rennes in Ligue 1 despite being just 17 years of age and even has one assist to his name.
He’s a natural defensive midfielder by trade and that is very much visible in his statistics this season.
Camavinga has averaged an incredible 4.3 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game in the French top-flight and has managed to maintain 87.5% passing accuracy, suggesting he’s quite good on the ball as well.
By all means, he really does seem like Busquets’ young replica and a perfect heir for Barcelona.
Of course, the Red Devils should also not be completely disregarded in this conversation.
The only true defensive midfielder they have in their squad is Nemanja Matic and the Serbian is slowly but surely getting on, similarly to Busquets.
Not to mention that he has also been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, seeing how his current contract is due to run out next summer and there are no clear indications that he might sign an extension.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has every right to chase Camavinga and for that reason, Blaugrana might not get the youngster without a fight.
Elsewhere, Gary Neville’s recent comments on Jose Mourinho have really stirred the pot with many Spurs fans…

Bad news for Wanyama? Tottenham reportedly chasing controversial talent
According to France Football, Tottenham are trying to hijack Barcelona and Bayern Munich’s proposed interest in Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot, who has been frozen out by the French giants after making it clear that he will not sign a new contract at the Parc des Princes – as reported by Sky Sports.
What’s the word, then?
Well, France Football reports that Rabiot, who has even been exiled from training, is a target for Bayern Munich and Barcelona due to his contract expiring at the end of the season.
The 23-year-old, however, has been the subject of late interest from Tottenham, with boss Mauricio Pochettino said to have spoken to the France international in a bid to convince him to move to north London.
Check out Neymar’s controversial new haircut for 2019 and Xherdan Shaqiri as you’ve never seen him before in the video below…
Barcelona have just wrapped up the £65m capture of Ajax wonderkid Frenkie de Jong, as reported by the BBC, so their need for a new midfielder has been lessened
What are Spurs’ chances of signing him?
Rabiot has not featured for the reigning Ligue 1 champions since December 11th against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League, having been exiled by Thomas Tuchel and even made to train with the Under-23’s.
Spurs and Pochettino will have to pull off the hijack of all hijacks if they are to lure Rabiot to the new White Hart Lane, especially after Barcelona appeared to make the most significant headway on the promising midfielder’s signature at the start of the month (as per the Guardian).
If they do manage to nab him off the European heavyweights, Pochettino will have seriously amended a huge problem in his team as the midfield is looking lighter and lighter following the departure of Mousa Dembele to Guangzhou R&F, as per the club’s official site.
A move for Rabiot would also see Victor Wanyama’s game time hit hard, and could even result in the Kenyan international leaving as Spurs have already decided that they’re open to offers for the injury-stricken midfielder, according to the Daily Mail.
However, if Spurs do tie up Rabiot, it would also be a hugely controversial move in terms of the youngster’s character and attitude.
He is quickly becoming viewed as an egotistical player with an odd sense of entitlement, that perception being strengthened by his refusal to be on France’s standby list for the World Cup having missed out on the final 23-man squad (as per the BBC).
