On this day, 24 September 1945, dockworkers in Brisbane, Australia launched a "black" ban on Dutch ships transporting materials to aid the invasion of the newly-independent Indonesia by the Netherlands. The previous evening, Indonesian seamen refused to take the vessels to sea, then approached the Waterside Workers Federation for support. A mass meeting of 1,200 dockers then agreed on the ban. Despite the racist white Australia policy being in place, unions of engineers, carpenters, boilermakers, ironworkers, plumbers, transport workers, seamen, meat industry workers and many others all agreed to impose a ban on work involving six ships: the Minvak Tanah, Van Outhorn, Khoem Hoea, Cawra and the Van Heutsz. Workers in other port cities like Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Fremantle also backed the ban, in solidarity with the struggle against Dutch colonialism. Eventually up to over 550 ships were grounded by the ban. Adelaide - don’t know enough about them but Josh Rachelle should be somewhere up there just because I like saying his surname, also he looks like he has Daicos genes in him

Brisbane - can’t stand Lachie Neale or James Hird’s metaphorical son Harris Andrews so dump them both (although I see why Lachie is up there with the multiple Brownlows) I reckon Josh Dunkley is a very good leader and he loves his club and plays wherever for the benefit of the team so he should climb up the leadership ladder, Charlie Cameron a main goal kicker I can’t stand him because he thinks he’s the superior Charlie but I’d put him up too. Also Dev Robertson for the eye candy.

Carlton - drop Cripps instantly, remove Weitering from leadership team. I’d like to see Cerra up there like deputy, Jack Silvagni because he’s so loyal to the club and the club history and loves us, I reckon TDK in the leadership team couldn’t hurt because he’s so good and seems so caring of his teammates, oh also remove Walsh from any leadership duties because he’s just too inconsistent. Not sure who I’d have as captain but Cerra is certainly always improving. Also sack our coach.

Collingwood - no change with the captain, I’m happy with Darcy Moore. But I’d definitely drop Maynard and Quaynor. It’s surprising that there’s no Daicos in the leadership team.

Essendon - I love Zach Merrett but I feel like his appointment of captain isn’t legit enough, he’s been known to play like a thug and hurt other players deliberately and I feel like that’s not very good for a captain. Very happy with Andrew McGrath as vice, would prefer him as captain but I guess the Essendon faithful don’t agree. Dyson should still be in the leadership team, I don’t get why people hate on him so much?

Fremantle - Nat Fyfe overrated but I prefer him as a captain to that creepy Alex Pearce. Don’t know much else about the team, surely Brayshaw should be up there.

Geelong - who else to take over Joel Selwood’s long reign than Dangerfield 🙄 I think Tom Hawkins or Mitch Duncan should have captained the team. But Geelong have so many good players even if they’re older, like even Jeremy Cameron. Idk I just don’t like Dangerfield. But I guess they can’t appoint a blonde because everyone would be playing ‘spot the captain’ at the games

Gold Coast - I have no care for this team but Touk Miller annoys me on another level because whenever he’s playing, my brother ALWAYS screams his name out and it’s irritating. Idk what a Jarrod Witts is. Idk I liked David Swallow there I guess no change other than drop Touk. Definitely don’t appoint Casboult he’s a proven traitor.

GWS - TOBY GREENE IS THE WORST DECISION AS AN AFL CAPTAIN SINCE RYAN GRIFFEN AND TEX WALKER! Like are you kidding me, he has to go, he’s a professional thug and a horrible opponent and never plays fair. Stephen Cogniglio should have been captain before him, and I don’t like him either. Not a fan of GWS and their backwards agenda at all.

Hawthorn - I’ve seen some absolute thuggery out of James Sicily before, especially when he was bleach blonde but idk I love Chad Wingard, id rather Chad as captain but is he still there? Does he ever play? I feel like I haven’t seen him in a million years. I don’t know many other hawthorn players but I can safely say Ginnivan in leadership role is not a good idea.

Melbourne - HATE max gawn! What a creep. Definitely think Petracca should be captain, even that Viney plate face guy, basically anyone besides Gawn, May, Hunter and Fritsch.

Norf - I love Jye Simpkin as captain but it’s so weird without Zieball, he’s been around forever but he seems so young and his retirement was so random. I don’t like MacDonald but definitely Simpkin, and I reckon Sheezel and fisher would make excellent leaders too.

Port - Idk what a Connor Rozzee is but I don’t really like Port at all, Travis Boak is a legend and it’s sad he stepped down. Maybe the 3 named one that also played for Norf, Horne Francis? He could go up there

Richmond - Dion Prestia gives me the heebie jeebies idk why. Oh wait it’s Nankervis who’s captain and he’s even worse!!! Idk, Tom Lynch could be captain but he’s such a thug so that’s not fitting. Idk, it’s hard with these young teams, some choices seem to be right out of desperation.

St Kilda - Jack Steele is an excellent option even if I can’t stand him and he has a head like an accountant. Can’t see anyone else other than Jack Higgins doing the job, and Jack seems so young, like he never ages? But also Liam Stocker would be a FANTASTIC leader but I guess because of his depression it’s too hard.

Sydney - idk what a Callum Mills is, wasn’t Paaarrkeeerrr captain? At least it’s not Heeney or Papley. ESPECIALLY Papley.

West Coast - Well they’re always tanking so I guess they’ve got the right captains!!! As long as it’s not Jack Darling I’m happy.

Western Bulldogs - super controversial opinion here but I can’t stomach Bont. Never have, never will. And there’s definitely plenty of players who could take over, like Adam Treloar (unfortunate for me because I can’t stand him either), Taylor Duryea who has the experience + hawthorn premierships, Jamarrah definitely, but sack Bailey Smith PLEASE.

HMS Surprise

Even though she is a great heroine in the novels of Patrick O'Brian, there was actually a frigate with this name. She was designed by Pierre-Alexandre Forfait as a corvette and launched on 16 January 1794 as Unité.

On 20 March 1794, the 41-year-old lieutenant de vaisseau Jean le Drézénec, who had joined the naval service shortly after the Revolution from the merchant service, took command of the Unité. He supervised the ship's equipment and found that the long guns were too large to be easily reloaded and the lower sails were also too large. He informed the authorities, who told him to stop equipping the ship as a major naval operation was imminent. Shortly afterwards, Unité took part in the Battle of the Glorious First of June, escorting the sunken Révolutionnaire, which was being towed by the Audacieux.

In June 1794, Unité finished repairs at Saint-Malo and Brest on the damage she had sustained in the battle. In the months that followed, she escorted merchant ships along the French coasts. On 28 September, together with the corvette Bergere and under the command of Lieutenant de Vaisseau Gouley, the two ships left Brest to sail north-west between Ireland and the islands of the Hebrides and St Kilda to intercept enemy merchant ships. On 17 October, the ships captured the merchant ship Dianne. The next day the weather deteriorated and the two ships were separated. Unwilling or unable to continue the mission alone, the Unité searched in vain for the Bergere for sixteen days before returning to Brest on 1 November.  After repairs, the Unité was ordered to the Mediterranean fleet at Toulon, where she arrived in March 1795. She spent the rest of the year either blockading in port or as a courier ship. In April 1796 she was ordered to North Africa on one such courier service, bringing personnel and news to the port of Bône. Le Drézénec, who had been promoted to Capitaine de Frégate shortly before, was suffering from smallpox at the time and was not fit for service. Therefore, their first lieutenant, Le Breton, took command of the Unité.

Captain Thomas Fremantle, commanding the frigate HMS Inconstant, had heard that a French frigate was at Bône and sailed to intercept it. When the Unité arrived on the afternoon of 20 April 1796, the watch on board the Unité identified the Inconstant as a neutral ship and Le Breton did not release the ship for action. About an hour later, the Inconstant sailed alongside, boarded and captured Unité unharmed. She was renamed HMS Surprise and commissioned as a 28-gun frigate. In 1797 the ship was stationed in Jamaica and returned to the shipyard at Plymouth in January 1798. There the armament was changed to 24 32-pdr. carronades, 10 18-pdr. carronades and 2 long 4-pdr. guns; the hull was plated with copper.

HMS Surprise gained fame for the recapture of HMS Hermione. The crew of the Hermione had mutinied and retreated with the ship to the Spanish port of Puerto Cabello. The captain of the Surprise led a privateer crew into the harbour on boats and, in a rather bloody raid, abducted the Hermione and the remaining crew under fire from the Spanish fort.

She had no more service time after that and so she was decommissioned in February 1802 and was broken up.

Australia 2023

25th-26th January

As we come towards the end of our Australasia adventure we’re making the most of the great weather here. We are now in Albany, WA, having driven down from Margaret River, stopping on the way at Manjimup where we visited an interesting Timber Museum. Albany has a huge natural harbour and was a big port until Fremantle come along and took a lot of the trade. It is surrounded by National Parks and beautiful beaches with the bluest of seas. Today we visited 2 gems, Little Beach, and Goode Beach which were truly amazing and not at all busy despite it being a public holiday for Australia Day. In fact, around here at least, Australia Day was pretty low key with just some family events on the beach.

We also went to The Gap which is a spectacular channel in the 40m high granite cliffs where the Southern Ocean pounds in and Natural Bridge made of granite rocks. Viewing platforms allow you amazing views of this rugged coastline and the crashing waves below. The sea was fairly calm on our visit but still created quite a splash!

In the evening we went to the National Anzac Centre which is dedicated to Australian and New Zealand soldiers in WW1 and has amazing views from the lookout including of the harbour where the convoy of military ships lined up and departed.

Rating AFLW Season 7 Pride Guernseys (Part 2)

Continuation of giving my unqualified thoughts on AFLW Season 7 Pride Jumpers

Hawthorn Hawks

As we can't go back to 1925 and get them to choose pretty much any colour combination other than brown and gold, this is what they have to work with. I get the idea of having the stripes be unfinished, with a paintbrush edge, to represent the story not being completed, but that kind of detail is not clear unless you have a very close look. Change in logo is a nice touch. Would have liked some more creativity. Stripes on the lower half of the back too. Rating 3/10.

Melbourne Demons

Their jumper last season was my second favourite, so this is disappointing. One of my podcasts had a host who likes it, and I’m happy for her. It’s giving me circus big top or that parachute game we’d use to play at school. Not sure if that’s a universal experience. Back has the trans flag colours which is good. The front looks like a shield. Rating 4.5/10.

North Melbourne Kangaroos

Had an extra week to think about this one, and I believe my issue is that it looks like the rainbow is behind bars. I know prison bar jumpers is a Port thing, but still. Would have liked if the blue was broken up like a PowerPoint slide-change graphic, with the rainbow breaking the stripes up. An improvement on Season 6's. Rating 5.5/10.

Port Adelaide Power

After having the best Indigenous jumper they pull this out too? Not fair. It's a finger print with important years for the LGBTQIA+ community in Australia breaking up the stripes. I saw 2017 (parliament voted yes to gay marriage) in there. I also think it's so important that they said in their reveal video that this includes the lesbian flag, cause it's not a bad word and even in this space it's rarely said. Feel like it's just missing one thing to be perfect. Rating 9/10.

Richmond Tigers

Richmond's jumper last season is still my favourite, 9.5 for that. My only issue with that was having Geelong referenced on the shoulder. This isn't a Western Bulldog and Footscray situation where it's a previous incarnation of the club, this is pointing out to another team that you beat them. Just have your first winning score and would have been the 10. Feel like Geelong responded to the dig in how that Round 1 game played out. Not as eye-popping as the home jumper with the black base, but still very good. 8.5/10.

St. Kilda Saints

To quote my bi St Kilda supporter friend, "it looks weird". And it does. I just hope someone out there raised the idea that a rainbow cross may upset some people in the wider community. These people probably get mad a lot, but feels like an unnecessary risk. I know the jumper they based this off, but the not black (what is it even? grey?) surrounding the cross, not a fan of. Has some dates in there too. Watching the game it looked decent, and all the background appeared black. Sightly improves their score. Rating 4/10.

Sydney Swans

Really liked the men wearing their version of this in the one AFL Pride Game, but I'm not feeling this. Red and White is Sydney, but doesn't feel like a Sydney jumper. Fremantle's jumper last season was basically the same, but still felt Freo. Maybe because having a colourful V is already part of their uniform. Swans had a lot to do, and a design already there, so fair enough to them for using it. Hope they are a bit more creative next time. Couldn't pick out the rainbow in the stands. Rating 4.5/10.

West Coast Eagles

My favourite part of this is the rainbow stripes on the shorts. Don't think anyone else did that. And the rainbow line between the yellow and blue is a nice touch. They didn't have a jumper last season in part because they didn't want to rush a design into their club's history. With that in mind, a rainbow shadow is your centerpiece? You could have made the eagle rainbow! I'll give them credit for the shadow idea, as that's new, but Brisbane is the only other club with an animal who could have. Could not tell this wasn't their normal home jumper in the stands. Rating 2.5/10.

Western Bulldogs

Sometimes keeping it simple is the best way to go. Bulldogs have the most Pride jumpers, with Carlton, as they played a Pride Game before it was extended to a whole round. This is a big departure from all of them. Highlighting the trans flag colours is so important, and very convenient considering the Bulldog's normal ones. Don't have light blue very often in AFL/W, but we should; it's a great jumper colour. Solid concept. Rating 8/10.

Opinion things about teams:

Adelaide - I hate the bogan song and the accents in it and the clear lie because there’s clearly anything but admiration for them of the nation, we all hate them and they suck and I don’t like a thing other than the navy blue part of their jumper and Josh Rashelly. Also I’m beyond terrified of their fans.

Brisbane - I do like Josh Dunkley, i’m partial with their song but it’s too French for me, also the Gabba was alright but like being at a ground from before my time tbh, concrete jungle. Don’t really care about them they’re probably the better of the interstate teams.

Carlton - what’s NOT to like? Besides Koutafides and Kristou. And 2019 32 and Dale Thomas. They suck

Collingwood - I really enjoy watching this club and my 7 year old LOVES them and Darcy and Pat and everyone but I hate their boys club and racist culture, their stupidity and this incessant need to keep De Goey. And I hate what they did to the Brown brothers, Bianco, Grundy, Ginnivan etc. also Port look better in the prison jumper x. Good song tho, maybe change the word cakewalk.

Essednon - solid song, easy to remember but I hate how my autocorrect always spells Essendon wrong lol. Nice jumper, nice colours, but hated the drug saga and James Hird and how much of a fake he is. Ruined Bombed Thompson who was in a way a favourite of mine and @fazcinatingblog ‘s. Not bad.

Fremantle - I like the purple. It ends there. The song is metal, the longer version was good but some of the lyrics are questionable tbh. Also always wanted to see a game in Perth.

Geelong - my eldest child goes for them and passionately loves them, and my older brother who died also loved them passionately. I lived in Geelong, hate the area and the fans but otherwise I’d call Geelong my third team tbh. I don’t mind them at all. Song is always hittin

Gold Coast - I do not like one thing.

GWS - as above. Plus their stadium is fucking stupid. Location wise and everything wise. I do like the song, it gets in my head. Carlton are the biggest and the bestttt

Hawks - Ginnivan lol he’s the only thing I like. My son likes them a lot! The song annoys me cause the only time I ever hear it is against one of MY teams :(

Norf - yeah nice colours, nice song + the unofficial entry before the song that I sing and Laura looks at me like I’m crazy, some players are alright but I hate that when a good team plays Norf, it’s the slowest and longest game ever because Norf naturally drag you down to their level.
