Do you feel like talking about game development?
https://youtube.com/shorts/0w3hnaUo-50
I can't speak on Palworld as a game because I haven't played it, watched any footage of gameplay, or seen any trailers, but I can aggregate some commentary by gamedevs I've talked to along with some research I've done to confirm we're not all just making shit up.
Palworld is Pocket Pair Inc.'s second major release, and it's an Early Access game while their first game is still, also, in Early Access.
The banner from their other Early Access game, Craftopia, is this:
Tumblr media
This doesn't bode well for Palworld's future. Note that it is February at time of the screenshot taken, and more distressingly a "bugfixing update" is worth celebrating 4 years into Craftopia's development.
They have two previous releases which are an AI-art-based social deduction game and a gacha card game. There's no nice way to say this, but the types of games in their portfolio bring to mind an amount of startup capital that makes the Early Access model unnecessary. In particular, there's no circumstance in which a game dev company simultaneously needs the early return of the EA model and also has the resources to split their studio off to make a second one. The reason they're using this model is as a metric of gauging interest to figure out how to divide their resources according to demand and to show to their investors that they're doing well.
Finally, they're working on another game at the same time as Palworld and Craftopia: Never Grave - a metroidvania roguelike with visuals similar to Hollow Knight and the capture mechanic of Super Mario Odyssey (complete with throwing your hat at enemies to possess them).
All of this paints a pretty clear, if cynical, picture of their business strategy. Pocket Pair is simply making other people's video games, but faster.
To be clear, I'm not accusing them of plagiarizing. I think Palworld is pretty distinct from Pokemon in fairly obvious ways, in the same way that Craftopia is distinct from Breath of the Wild. In addition, both games are borrowing game mechanics and ideas from more than one game each.
But at the same time, the vibe I get is less "taking inspiration from multiple sources" and more "seeing what is successful about multiple sources and combining them with the goal of making something appealing." Gamers like farming, so we added crops. Gamers like third person shooters, so we added that to Pokemon. There's no consideration for thematic cohesion or vision. I think the reason there was a controversy involving the suspected use of AI in Palworld is because there's an evident absence of artistic intent which mirrors the way AI generates images or text.
Pocket Pair Inc. is the cover band of game developers. And with Palworld they happen to have learned the crowd pleasers.
That's not to say there's no artistic value to Palworld, or even that the game isn't worth playing, or fun, or "good," whatever that means. Objectively speaking, making a game that appeals to so many people it breaks records is an accomplishment worth paying attention to, and quite frankly if that were me I'd be pretty proud of myself. But I can't help but think about that post about AAA games all being the same because studios are afraid to take risks without risking capital and then think, Palworld is a manifestation of the same problem.

OKAy this isn't f1 related but i feel like you always have sensible takes and i'm really interested to hear your thoughts. what on earth do you make of the whole situation with princess kate??? or are you not caught up on that
I’m not following it super closely, but I do have thoughts. So I will preface by saying i am not up on all the theories and info.
Personally, while I don’t think the conspiracies have the “why” correct, I do believe that Kate hasn’t been genuinely seen in public for a while. I don’t think it was her in the car with William today, and I’m 50/50 on whether it was her in the car with her mother.
I think she’s likely recovering from an illness that is either emotionally painful for her, or something not talked about in polite company. So, something like a hysterectomy, or something like ulcerated colitis, which I believe often necessitates having part of your colon removed and sometimes a temporary colostomy bag. So, something that you wouldn’t really want the whole world knowing about. My other theory, which I consider less likely but still possible, is that she has early stage cancer and is undergoing aggressive treatment, and a round of chemotherapy has altered her appearance (it’s common for the face to bloat, and of course the hair loss), which is why she won’t be seen in public. Whatever it is they have gone above and beyond to keep it private and I can only assume it’s at her and William’s specific instruction.
I would guess that the photo is AI generated, but not from nothing, probably from a set of photos that originally didn’t have only Kate and all three kids in it. They may well all be from the same day and the same place, but they photoshopped them altogether to create a “Mother” themed picture. I presume this was done somewhat on the fly because they didn’t anticipate how vicious the rumours would get, and probably planned to use a well known older picture, but because of the demand for new pictures, they cobbled one together as Kate is not currently in a state to be photographed.
Could be a divorce on the cards but this is a lot of messing around just to announce they’re not together when frankly they could live separately for the next 30 years and no one would notice. I suppose Kate could be on strike and they’re just trying hide it, or she’s done a Princess Charlene and just run away. But I don’t buy it. She dedicated her whole life to this endeavour, and she was well prepared for what it entailed, I don’t believe she would just pack it in like this.
My crack theory is that she’s not even that ill and this whole “where’s Kate” drama is just to distract from the fact that Charles is about to shuffle off this mortal coil any day now because the herbs aren’t working. Unlikely, but not impossible. Because he’s the one with cancer and low key hiding out as well but no one is talking about it.
Whatever is going on with that family, they must all be having a miserable time, even camilla demanded a break.
I guess my most prominent thought is…why do people feel they have a right to know about this woman’s intimate health problems? Okay yeah if she’s using a body double and fake photos that’s a bit wild but at the same time they’ve had to do that because the public demand to see her like she’s a zoo exhibit. Yes, her role is in public service but she’s also a human. She’s someone’s daughter, and she’s someone’s mum. As usual, I wonder where people get the audacity to demand to know which body part she’s had cut open.

disclaimer: this is open to other ai canons so it will be flexible, which is probably why this is so long, and will be tagged as such. LONG POST AHEAD.
Tumblr media
aside from one scene where aiba loses her battery, we don't really see mizuki with her blind grey eye...well, she only has one eye and whether or not aiba is her partner for a while, temporarily, or i hope, she gets a gold-colored (a bit darker than aiba's coloring) left eye for herself if, and i dread this slightly, AI3? she always loses her left eye, and if aiba is turned off, she uses an eyepatch because the prosthetic to cover the gaping hole is a washed out shell of her blue-grey right eye. it's more a washed out, dull lighter gray - silver than the dark blue grey of her right before it was destroyed and i'll be coloring in icons with these dependent on canons of other ai muses. i mean it was blown clean out with not a trace of it left. i doubt they can fully replicate the same color plus..ps won't make it look matching whoops.
she still pursues the detective life / problem solving life and my mizuki is extremely proactive in the HB case, as i'm very bitter about how she was advertised but given so little, and want to balance out what i think ryuki would be doing in my mizuki's storyline when she's old enough to join abis. she's obviously more of a rookie than ryuki is, and my mizuki actively struggles MUCH more with forgiving him on the explosion route. saying she has no stakes to be on the case in a.ini is....her dad literally went missing because of that tragedy. it's a huge driving force to arrest the person who took ANOTHER family member away, tearer, naix, tokiko and also, her own private investigations on horadori institute, which she still was sent there, but she was not born there, just there until she was three as another result of inhumane experimentation.
all the while running two companies or frantically trying to figure out how to at least, with the inheritances that were left behind by her biological father renju. while i do really find that aiba and mizuki as a team grew on me, since they were already like a big sister and little sister different dynamics from iris and mizuki ? and i do think she should have her own AI-BALL that isn't the same yellow but golden-yellow, to match her color scheme because her 18 year old glow up is amazing? she'll always lose that eye. frankly to mizuki it's hardly as traumatic as all the hell she's gone through since she was born, she's kind of...numb and indifferent to it. which is disturbing, considering she canonly sneaks out of counseling or attempts at therapy.
in my canon she's generally borrowing aiba for an unknown period of time and swaps between her eyepatch, that has the insignia in the artbook that date inherited instead, as i'll always cherish aiba and date's bond, or aiba isn't her permanent partner. she is her partner too, but not lifelong. a lifelong familial presence in her life? absolutely. but mizuki should have an ai-ball of her own, someone to bounce her snarky and feisty attitude with in a chemistry unique to her.
i do genuinely hope they give her an ai-ball that does LOOK a lot like aiba's coloring, since that worked so well with her color scheme. maybe a darker gold / yellow, and also her 'seaweed' shape is more like a rabbit, as that is mizuki's animal motif, like date's by fandom standards tends to be the falcon / cat. i also could see a small lion, playing off 'a lionhearted girl.' and because mizuki is both lion and rabbit.
Tumblr media
this is her look when date needs aiba back or she's waiting on her own ai-ball. or waiting on having her blown out left eye adjusted to fit aiba. or if it comes down to it, both dates share aiba when it counts, as tama remarked on the diverge ending about mizuki and date tossing aiba around. but date and aiba will ALWAYS be my favorite ai and partner dynamic. i really want to see that for mizuki too! while she won't admit it, she feels more at ease if aiba is with date, because the explosion route whether he's missing long or short in time, and aiba looks after date, in a more...tactical way than say, if mizuki did. she's just as protective but would rather eat rocks than admit it easily.
it just...traumatized her far more than losing an eye just like renju and shoko and date. i plan to write a balanced team of two traumatized detectives, mizuki and ryuki, as both were done so dirty. mizuki will imply ryuki in her canon, mine anyway, and he will also be given the treatment i felt he deserved like she did so, so very much.
honestly? ryuki being someone who has helpful advice for her and them being a big team? after she begins to forgive him slowly for ...involving so many people in the explosion route? she's more receptive to his talents and experience. i just feel knowing mizuki, if you hurt her family even if you had no choice, it's going to take a while to forgive you or not forgive you at all. ryuki is the former, and forgiving him takes mizuki /time/.

Hey, I heard you like Duel Links Lore! As owner of the (inactive 😓) @incorrectduellinksquotes I would like to impart the Cursed Knowledge if I can.
First, an easy way to tell if someones AI? If they re-enact a duel in their talk. Pegasus and Kaiba(DM) roleplay their DK duel, for example.
Starting with DM, an interesting note about Isis/Ishizu - Even before Yami Marik was added, she and Rishid/Odion had a conversation about how Malik/Marik was missing from Duel Links... ish. If I remember correctly, what they actually say is that Malik is missing in general, and they came to Duel Links to try and find him. While Isis has evidence pointing to her being an AI clone, Rishid has no damning evidence either way. Its entirely possible that Rishid is the real Rishid, and Malik has actually gone missing. I wonder if (Yami) Malik's inclusion in the game was considered in poor taste and got backlash.
Also, its evident that The Real Kaiba used Kaiba (DM) as his avatar for a while, before DSOD world was complete. Oddly, Roland/Isono seems to listen to Mokuba(DM) as his superior despite Mokuba being an AI copy, which is just funny
Onto GX - Its true that most characters are pretty ambiguous, but theres some that are obvious. Judai and Yubel (separate, not Yubel/Judai) are both AI, Cronos/Crowler does the RP thing, Ryo/Zane is still a butt much, but thats about it. The only one who has any indication they're real is... The Chazz. Yes, Black Thunder seems to be the genuine article, if and only because of the company he brings with him. Ojamas Yellow, Green, and Black wouldnt be there if Manjoume was an AI, and even if they were they wouldnt Leak Yubel's Event like Yellow did.
5Ds... you seem to have a good grasp on them.
I never watched zexal :X
Arc V iirc kinda implied nobodys real? i dunno i dropped Duel Links at that point
Vrains is where it gets interesting again, but frankly thats its own post. The question isnt "are they AI copies" the question is like. If you're a digital copy of something already digital, and the original is gone... is there a functional difference calling you a copy? Or is it fair to consider you the original? the funny ourple blob boi is a philisophical nightmare and he'd probably enjoy knowing he is.
Sorry. but also im not
OH FUCK YEAH!! Thanks a bunch, this is a FANTASTIC compilation of interesting lore bits; I didn't know a lot of these! (as it goes, having not played the game for like...the first four years it was out dfhghsdfg) THE FACT CHAZZ MIGHT BE THE REAL DEAL, OF ALL CHARACTERS??!? ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS. PLEASE. proving his humanity thanks to Ojama Yellow. truly only the best for The Chazz.
The thing about if a character reenacts a duel in their dialogue being a good benchmark for whether or not they're AI is fascinating....the brings up an interesting side-tangent with that when you have two confirmed AI characters dueling each other, and their dialogue isn't a perfect duel reenactment but still implies an established dynamic and history (like aporia and z-one's dialogue when they duel each other /obligatory comment about my old men). The way the AI themselves are evolving and talking with each other and being their own variations of these people....that's a can of worms all its own.
Arc-V's been such a weird case because even if everyone there happens to be AI, they're so kneedeep in trying to figure out how the memory cloning process works, what brings a person into this world, that you wonder if there's going to be some sort of realization of the self for one of those guys on the horizon. Could be fun if so!!!!
very very interested to see where the VRAINS implications go cuz that is SUPREMELY INTERESTING lore (especially for a fucking FREEMIUM TRADING CARD GAME ONLINE) and I want to see what they do with it. havent even SEEN vrains yet but I like watching these characters try to solve a mystery that should have never been their problem in the first place. great stuff!

Be Honest, Art is Worthless to You
I remain - well, I don't know - surprised? baffled? dismayed? - at the number of takes that cross my path that complain about AI art, and how it's stealing from artists. That itself isn't the issue so much as then those same people turn around and almost in their very next breath justify some form of art piracy - music, movies, and so on.
I submit to you: this is the world you built, and you have no standing upon which to express outrage over AI now, because this is simply the logical extension of how we treat art. One poster put it like this: "companies need to learn that they're competing with free". That right there is brilliantly accurate and at the same time the very symptom of the problem. Why go see a movie or buy a DVD when you can sign up to a streaming service with hundreds of shows for the price of one each month? Why sign up for a streaming service when you can bum a password off a friend or relative? And then you loudly complain about how some new season's special effects are crap or the animation's all janky, and my dudes, that shit costs money, money which you are dead set against spending.
I get it: times are tough, the economy sucks, sure. And you are fortunate enough to live in a time where technology enables the taking of art without paying money. Let me tell you (cue someone with the Man Yells At Cloud meme), when I was young and I couldn't afford all the albums I wanted, I had to budget and make hard choices and set priorities, because stealing a vinyl LP was not nearly as easy as freeloading off the Internet. Nowadays, people can get anything they want all the time, so they come to believe they are entitled to everything, all the time. At least as far as media goes.
And in the graphic arts, like drawing and such, it's not like the signs haven't long been painted in bright day-glo colors, warning of exactly this fate. Anyone who's an artist or follows artists has heard horror stories of the entitled would-be commissioner who demands high-quality work and then is outraged to the point of abusiveness when expected to pay more than a couple bucks for it. We hold these people up as assholes of the highest order but then expect a band to let us have their music for free. "Go on tour! Sell merch!" we say. A person spends their youth practicing guitar or the drums so they can become a glorified t-shirt salesman.
So how could it be any shock or surprise that AI developers would treat the entire visual library of the Internet as their own personal reservoir of data? Why not? What ethical rule do we use for media that would stand in their way? Why should graphic artists and illustrators be treated any differently than musicians or filmmakers?
No, this is the life people asked for, only some people didn't expect that system to turn around and bite them.
Frankly, I've lost the will to argue with people about piracy itself - the rationalizations are too entrenched and cross-pollinated. Cue another meme, of the two muscular men clasping hands: one is a Communist who thinks all art should be free and the other is an Anarcho-Capitalist who's certain that free is the perfect market value as long as you can get it.
So you do you, kids - but admit it, to yourselves if not out loud, that you don't actually value art that much, if you can't give an artist so much as the price of a value meal at McDonald's in exchange for their work. And then, when the crowd clamoring for free art eternally and always turns and begins to chew at your own art and industry, don't be surprised when you encounter a certain lack of sympathy.

the problem with how the AI thing is being handled is that there's just no nuance regarding the issue, I think. people are scared (and I would say rightfully so, when threatened with an automated process to imitate their labor)
people are really treating the concept of AI itself as if it was horrible and unforgivable because of what it is doing to artists. but the problem really isn't in how AIs work, it's in how they're being used and how they're being fed.
people should have a say on what happens to their art but clinging to outdated and frankly hurtful-to-art concepts like copyright (copyright exists for companies to make money with art not for the small artist) doesn't really help people in the long run. what I would like to see is if AI got regulated as to *require* permission from artists to use their art as a part of their dataset.
irt the uses of AI in heinous ways, such as the non consensual use of images from hospitals or the like, this isn't a problem that's relevant to the application of AI as art. HOWEVER. it is nonetheless important, and important to note that automated systems have been political since their very conception. face recognition software has been known to have weird racist biases, because the majority of them are built with either datasets that feature white people in the majority or they're just straight up built by the majority.
in general I've found that a lot of political issues can be boiled down to issues of human autonomy, and this is no different: we give no autonomy to people when certain datasets use their art unbeknownst to them, we give people no autonomy when we make automatic face recognition software that will always have bias and use it to make decisions people should be making.
when I think of how to solve this issue in terms of "how do I allow people to be as autonomous as possible in this context?" I feel like we need to make it impossible for companies to make money off of people's art without their express consent; that we should build art databases in which the art in there can only be used if the artist allows it to be there; and most of all to question when is automation an appropriate idea and how our own biases can be influencing how tools are developed.
