Kagekao's Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)
What is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome? Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are a group of conditions that cause very flexible joints and stretchy and fragile skin.
Kagekao has the hypermobile type of Ehlers-Danlos. His first sign that something was wrong was that he was "double-jointed" in all joints (neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles—even in his fingers and toes!). It caused (and still does) a lot of pain for him, as all of his joints were hyperextending in ways they shouldn't. His skin was also very soft, almost velvety, to the touch, was quite thin and prone to splitting, easy bruising, and small (atrophic) scarring.
He was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos when he was around eight or so. He is AFAB (he's trans in my canon. Argue with the wall.) so his symptoms were a lot more noticeable and thus he was able to be diagnosed and treated earlier.
Flare-ups. They are absolute hell for Kage. Whenever xyrs EDS flares, xe's basically out of commission for however long the flare-up lasts. His joints become a lot looser and are prone to subluxations and dislocations; joints are a lot stiffer in the morning; he experiences extreme, persistent fatigue; chronic pain increases tenfold, etc. all happen when he flares so he spends most flares in bed (usually cuddling his boyfriend, EJ) Xe finds that lots of rest, ice/heat (alternating), and bracing help during flares. Xyr Tourette's does also calm quite a bit during EDS flares, too, so xe doesn't have to worry about accidental joint dislocations from a rough tic.
Symptoms (examples, not exhaustive)
Chronic dislocations and subluxations (loose joints)
Joint hypermobility (9/9 on the Beighton score)
Joint pain
Muscle Pain (Myalgia)
Fatigue
Thin, fragile, and stretchy skin
