i need to wynnepost. somebody has to
#its crazy how people will assume she is all the tropes she subverts and then ignore her#also how sympathy for circle mages’ indoctrination only lasts until they get old i guess and then fuck them#because its not as if they were ever a terrified child who’d never had anything better than a single templar’s mildest kindness and any kind#of home even if it was the tower#so an orphan kid who had no memory of anything but scurrying between farmsteads and hiding in barns#didnt want to leave. what a shock. you guys dont get the place comfort has in keeping circle mages complicit#so it’s violent and terrible and you never have privacy and your children get murdered and you’re always watched and hated#its also a warm bed and community and a chance to succeed#do you honestly think every kid from fucking THEDAS knows theres anything better out there#that doesnt make the circle good. it makes it horrific that they prey on vulnerable kids to teach them the world hates them#and only the circle is ‘safe’#i just think there should be some sympathy for those kids and what they grow up into#its easy for the player to walk in and say their character would hate the circle and never have listened to the templars#its easy for say an amell or even a surana with a family back home to not fear what they left behind#wynne genuinely thinks without the circle mages would all be murdered and she’ll fight and die protecting her fellow mages#from the right of annulment#yes its a flaw that she goes on to teach others the circle must be tolerated and that is precisely how the circle is perpetuated ove#over generations#but its amazing to me to just act like its her fault#well. this is more tags than i expected it to be

I know this is gonna be a controversial take, but the more I think about it, the more obsessed I am with the idea of Varric voluntarily helping The Crimson Knight (especially in a worldstate where Hawke was left in the Fade).
I’ve talked before about how I view Meredith as the type of person who is motivated by her desire to protect her own at all costs, and how this leads her down the path of Well-Intentioned Extremism, and culminating in becoming the embodiment of the uh, Knight Templar trope.
And Varric is obviously motivated by his motivation to protect Hawke: he shielded them from the Inquisition, and when push came to shove and he was forced to expose Hawke to the Inquisition anyway, it can result in Hawke’s death. The Inquisition fails Hawke, who is basically Varric’s moral compass — without Hawke’s influence, he defaults to siding with the templars at the end of DA2.
Most of the Inquisitor’s inner circle scatters over Thedas and Varric returns to Kirkwall. Varric loves Kirkwall; he’s a Kirkwaller through and through: even though he’s never envisioned nor wanted a life of politics, he becomes the fucking viscount, because there’s nobody else left who wants one drop of the poisoned chalice of that role.
And Kirkwall is a city that has always been dependent on its templars for protection. They are the city’s military force, and the city is noticeably weaker once the templars abandon it — depending on world state, it can lose a significant portion of its territory to one of Varric’s former companions. If someone he knew and trusted can do that to Kirkwall, who else might take advantage of Kirkwall in its weakened state?
Varric is isolated and alone, away from anyone who might be able to help him see the situation in a different light: his main support network is Aveline and Seneschal Bran, neither of whom are known for their ardent support of mage rights. They’re doing their best to clear Kirkwall of the impacts of the war, of the red lyrium, and even though they’re doing their best to avoid exposure, being around that much red lyrium cannot be healthy. Slowly, the paranoia and increased penchant for violence settle in. It becomes impossible to resist spending more time around the substance — and sometimes, it talks! And it sounds like Meredith Stannard.
Varric is desperate and scared and has lost everyone he has ever loved. The Inquisition has been downsized or disbanded, and his only purpose is to serve his city: the same intention with which Meredith started, the same intention and fears that the red lyrium feeds upon in them both.
Varric fears becoming his parents: people who failed to protect him because they were too caught up in their past mistakes.
But sometimes, as people, in our attempts to avoid our fears, we end up barreling into them headfirst instead.

Another Agustino sketch just cause I think he deserves it uwu
I also decided to make different designs of the mage attire so here's something simple and mobile for Ostwick! (Which is where Agustino had ended up in despite managing to make it far in his escape from Kinloch Hold!)
Hope you like it!

So, what if I just drop some Thedosian recipe blurbs I’ve been working on. Like just a few blurbs for wip Wednesday cause I definitely have not been digging through historical cookbooks nor am I motivated to get as many done before the official cookbook is done to contrast what I expect what is going to be mostly mundane recipes. (I love that we’re even getting one but considering their is a LoTR prop in the current cover draft…)
But, first three blurbs are canon foods in Dragon Age. The last two, one is me deciding Tevinter would be like Orlais but instead of wyverns they ate griffons and the other is bringing the fact that raccoons are indeed edible — historically in a lot of rural, wooded areas of North America.
Deep Mushroom Cream Sauce
A cream sauce popular in Orzammar as it is served with seared nug. However, it should be noted that one must always be careful with the amount of deep mushrooms used in a recipe. The repercussions of using too much are more than a passing upset stomach or overwhelming flavor. So when we say flavored, we do mean flavored.
This recipe uses deep mushroom powder to flavor the sauce and add other mushrooms for texture. However, should you choose to use only deep mushrooms in the sauce, one should forgo either the powder or the chopped mushrooms; as using both will cause mental ailments. After all, a dinner party is truly a success so long as one does not inflict their guest with ailments of the mind. Particularly if one is trying to remain in good social standing.
Exquisite Misery
The Orlesians are nothing if not extravagant. From wyverns to phoenixes, Orlesians have a tendency to play chance with their lives for whatever element of decadence is in the trends. While deep mushrooms are perhaps the least lethal thing one can consume, I do advise avoiding eating too many of these little cakes.
That said, should one partake and find that they are able to get past the musky, earthy flavor; these can be quite a treat. Fluffy, soft, and a touch sweet, it is a dessert I find best to consume after a rather savory or spicy meal.
Herbed Chicken and Biscuits
A simple, savory meal commonly found in many homes across Ferelden. Though the herbs will differ depending on your region, this warm and hearty meal is perfect for a crisp autumn evening or a rainy spring night. Fending off the chill with a warm meal and a mouth watering scent that fills the home. Pairs well with a warm cup of cider or a glass of wine.
Griffon Leg with Pomegranate Glaze
This old recipe was recovered from the library of a Tevinter town on the edge of the border to the Anderfels. The age of this recipe dates back to a time before the First Blight, before the founding of the Grey Wardens, when Tevinter would hunt these creatures for sport; much like Orlesians hunt their prized wyverns.
When looking through such records there are a variety of accounts that describe griffon meat to be an odd union of chicken and beef. However, there are contrasting accounts declaring it to be of pork and goat. Much like goat meat, griffon meat can be tougher the older the creature is. Another quality to be aware of is that griffon meat will become dry if you cook it too fast or if you do not keep an eye on it. Thus a slow cook to allow the meat to become tender while also periodically turning it and adding another coat of glaze.
Raccoon Meat Pie
Many have seen these curious creatures either in the woods or rummaging amongst the alley ways. They are not an uncommon site to see around, and that should include one's dinner table as well.
The meat of a raccoon is described akin to the dark meat of a waterfowl such as duck, or an oilier cousin of chicken. The taste of this meat isn't overwhelming, but it is certainly gamey and can be tough if not properly prepared.
Given the need to prep the raccoon meat to avoid any chance of toughness in the meat, much like a stew, this allows for long cooking as well as a more complete meal. A quality that may make the meal more appetizing if it is not a frequent feature on the dinner table.

I wonder if people understand that the general consensus about magic in Thedas points to the upholding of the Circles (but the general public do not know if the Templars' abuses obviously) and that people do fear magic...like that a societal idea...however you usually end up with a group of people who are more open and accepting magic
Unless I'm reading into it completely wrong ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I wonder if Kirkwall and perhaps much of the Free Marches is matrilineal. The Amell and Harimann families could be outliers, but for both of them, the name has passed through the female line. We don’t know if Johane has siblings or how much age factored into things with Leandra, but Johane inherited from her father and Leandre was the heir to her parents before she left.

I must say that THE most funny and incredibly tragic thing about my Lavellan is that by the end of Trespasser, after all the shit that happened to her throughout last couple of years, she is, in fact, in a waaaaay better mental and psychological state then at the beginning of Inquisition

6, 8, 22 for riya and maeve!
thank youuuu ari xx even tho this made me sad about maeve <3 // 40 oc development questions
What was your oc’s relationship with their parents like? If they didn’t have any parents/didn’t know them, who in their life was the closest to a parent to them?
RIYA — she loves the both of them, but is closer with her father, loren. mama priscilla loves all of her children and has certainly made certain they're taken care of, but riya learned somewhere in her younger years that her mother would be thinking of work first always. she's the duchess of cumberland and owns a large percentage of the businesses in the city, she was constantly busy and frequently prioritized getting work done over everything else. meanwhile loren had been spoiling her since she was a baby, always going out of his way to spend time with her and doing things to encourage her fun. when her magic manifested but she had no proper circle headquarters to move into because of recent tragedy, loren took on the responsibility of giving her lessons for three years until the new place was ready. they've had so much bonding time and it didn't end there because she's spoiled and gets to leave the circle frequently lmao. i think she'd also have more open talks with her father, she'd feel much more comfortable speaking with him about private/emotional matters because priscilla over there just might forget to be nurturing because she's concerned about the impact a topic might have on their reputation or whatever.
MAEVE — it was bad, thanks for asking 💜 truly it was horrible. she assumes her parents were happy at Some point because her mother gave up a life of nobility to run away with her father, but maeve grew up knowing that fanette hated her life as it was now. at thirteen maeve could recite by heart the rant her mother would go on about how she gave up her privilege and wealth just to end up village hovel with not a single crown to her name (which was excessively dramatic, even though they Were poor) at least three twice a month. then moshe over there gave up any chance at father of the year award with how little he interacted with maeve outside of telling her what chore she needed to be working on or grumbling about how he had to spend more coin feeding them all as she grew up. it was just,,,,a horrible environment. she never felt loved until folk started to appreciate her beauty and natural charm, which her parents then took full advantage of by having her use those traits to haggle merchants and calm anyone they’d angered. cherry on top of it all was them making the deal with lord carden, selling her off to him in agreement for a large payment of coin which they quickly used to get the hell out of white orchard once maeve had moved to vizima. it took maeve a very long time to move past their treatment of her and what it’d done to her way of thinking, and even then she never forgave them for it. not that it mattered much to them anyhow, pretty sure at some point she’d stumble across them in some new city where they’d managed to keep up a small business and had themselves another child. i don’t think she would ever engage with them to find out if they changed, how they’d fared, etc etc.
Does your oc prefer being in a crowd or being completely alone? How many people can be around them before they get uncomfortable?
RIYA — she is obsessed with being the center of attention. she doesn’t much like being alone and prefers to be in groups of people where she can socialize and do other various activities. i can’t think of a time she’d be uncomfortable with a crowd, she rather thrives off of them and it’s never more clear than when she’s participating in a tourney or showing off at the circle.
MAEVE — she absolutely hates being alone, she spent so much time feeling isolated and without interaction that she dreads being left by her lonesome. she doesn’t have a preference between small groups or large crowds, as long as she’s with people then she’s able to feel comfortable. it’s a big reason behind why she’s so clingy, poor girl can’t help but have the worry that someone she cares about may not come back if they’re gone long enough and the worried thoughts start to pop up.
How quiet or loud is your oc? Are they easily capable of sneaking around without being heard, or do they feel it’s impossible to stop talking?
RIYA — she only gets truly Loud during events or combat when she’s constantly chatting mad shit, but she still likes to talk outside of those. the type to get worked up if she’s told to be quiet even if she has nothing to really say at the moment. she can sneak around easily because she’s light and had years of practice slinking around to get what she wants without getting into trouble.
MAEVE — certainly loud in the bedroom, sometimes loud when she’s going through very strong emotions and feels that she’s not being allowed to voice them properly so she has to double down. would talk for hours upon hours and still be eager to keep going if she’s with the right folk, she’s a storyteller and nerd and adventurer who has so much to share with anyone willing or wanting to listen. probably needed some lessons in sneaking around properly because for a long time she simply Felt invisible or ignored without having the actual skills for it.
