Berthe Morisots zuster Edma was ook geen onverdienstelijk schilder, zoals blijkt uit het hier tentoongestelde Landscape. Beide zussen hadden professioneel succes en exposeerden op de prestigieuze Salon van 1864. Toen Edma in 1869 huwde, gaf ze haar schildercarrière op om zich geheel te storten op haar rol als vrouw en moeder. Berthe was een van de weinige vrouwen die een carrière in de kunst combineerde met huwelijk en moederschap.

De positie van de vrouw komt op de tentoonstelling ook nog op een andere manier aan de orde. Er hangt namelijk een werk van Fragonard, getiteld: The New model. Een model doet in diens studio auditie als model. Terwijl de moeder gewillig het hemd van het meisje laat zakken en haar borsten ontbloot, tilt de kunstenaar met zijn schilderstok haar petticoat omhoog om haar enkels te bekijken. Het schilderij werd in 1860 tentoongesteld en veroorzaakte toen een sensatie. In deze tijd van ‘me too’ zou het werk waarschijnlijk ook opschudding veroorzaken, maar dan om een geheel andere reden.

Berthe Morisot - The Cradle (1872)

Undeniably Berthe Morisot's most famous painting, The Cradle was painted in Paris in 1872. It shows one of the artist's sisters, Edma, watching over her sleeping daughter, Blanche. It is the first image of motherhood—later one of her favourite subjects—to appear in Morisot's work.

The mother's gaze, her bent left arm, a mirror image of the child's arm, and the baby's closed eyes form a diagonal line which is further accentuated by the movement of the curtain in the background. This diagonal links the mother to her child. Edma's gesture, drawing the net curtain of the cradle between the spectator and the baby, further reinforces the feeling of intimacy and protective love expressed in the painting.

Berthe Morisot showed The Cradle at the Impressionist exhibition of 1874—the first woman to exhibit with the group. The painting was scarcely noticed although important critics commented on its grace and elegance. After unsuccessful attempts to sell it, Berthe Morisot withdrew it from display and The Cradle stayed in the model's family until it was bought by the Louvre in 1930. (source)

Dead Boy Detectives Ship Names

Alr so there seems to ongoing discussion pertaining to this and I'd like to add my own two cents

Edwin x Charles

So what I've seen online so far is just various mashups of their names in the classic way such as: Chedwin, Payneland/Paynland/Pain(e)land -> What I haven't seen is Charwin or Rowpayne (I do like Payneland apart from the bit where if you say it out loud it sounds like pain land)

I however think it could be cute if they had one of the other types of ship names (e.g. Ineffable husbands, firstprince, wolfstar, frostiron). If it didn't have the potential to get too confusing I would advocate for the ship name 'Dead Boy Detectives or DBD' simply because that is already their shared title (alas that wouldn't really work as it's also the name of the show). Another name I'd like to more seriously put forward is BestMates. It's cringe sure but the way Charles says it in the confession scene. I feel like some name that references them hiding from death or escaping hell together could be really cute too but I can't think of one rn. I don't think they need separate ship names for romantic or platonic since I think trying to box their relationship into a category like that when it is its own thing is unfair.

We all agree that the cat king is called Thomas right? I feel like that seems pretty unanimous so far. Tomwin? Edmas? PayneKing?CatWin? WinKing or KingWin. Ngl KingWin feels right to me cuz the cat king spends most of his time trying to win Edwin over so their shipname also being a nod to their relationship triumphing is kinda fun.
