All this discourse over the new wonka movie is just reminding me of how much I hate the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Idk why it's such an unpopular opinion to feel that Johnny Depp's willy wonka was just...so bad. Like I cannot put it into words but it was so off. Idc if the rest of the movie was more accurate to the book than the 1971 version, depp's wonka was just...wrong

#like obviously im biased because i grew up watching the 1971 version #but i also watched the 2005 version when i was little so #while wilder's wonka was unhinged he still had that whimsical element that book wonka had #depp's wonka just felt like he'd been trapped in this sad childlike state his entire life #and while thats an interesting angle it just robs any of the story of any of its whimsy because he doesnt feel like hes in control ever #with wilder you never knew what he was gonna do next #whereas with depp almost all of his reactions were 'make a vaguely annoying noise or whine' or whatever #tbh this might not be accurate i havent seen either movie for a while im going off of memory #anyway why am i rambling so much
