THE HANGED MAN
the upward hanged man tarot card reflects a particular need to suspend certain action. as a result, this might indicate a certain period of indecision. his position may be seen as a sacrifice that he needed to make in order to progress forward - whether as repentance for past wrongdoings, or a calculated step backward to recalculate his path onward. do the song of achilles fans who listened to achilles come down know about dave le'aupepe's first hand perspective. have they listened to magnolia yet. do they know about the positions. do they know that the second person voice in achilles come down means so much more if you interpret it as the other half of magnolia which is raw and first person and focused on the split second after deciding to live. do they know that critics 'yelled the word pretentious with no clarity or class' and gang of youths still recorded achilles come down which has audio samples from an essay about sisyphus by a french philosopher and it became their most popular song. do they know. how do i let them know

“Want Want" by Maggie Rogers
DV:
Is it silly to call this year a resurgence for rock music? I’ve enjoyed more guitars in 2022 than in the last five years combined, and while a big part of that is down to Ethel Cain and Gang of Youths, there’s also artists I’ve never really rated suddenly dropping bangers. For example, I could not name a single Maggie Rogers song, although I know I’ve tried to get into her more than once, but suddenly I’ve had “Want Want” and its overdriven chugging riffs stuck in my head for days now. Where Ethel Cain and Dave Le'aupepe have captivated with expansive, idiosyncratic productions, Maggie Rogers is in purely pop-rock mode here: barely three minutes, starting and ending with the titular hook, packed and propulsive. And there’s a tradeoff there: “Want Want” doesn’t have the depth or weight of the explorations the other two artists have packed into a single track this year. But not everything needs to - and it’s fun to hear the aesthetic bleeding through in less consciously-ambitious forms as well. “Want Want” is a sugar rush of a song; that’s a less flashy mark to hit, but just as challenging  in its own right.
MG:
I’ve recently softened my position on nostalgia after seeing some, in my opinion, disproportionately upset reactions to Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” making a 36 years belated chart run. I used to think nostalgia was a disease, or, at best, a symptom of disease, but now I think it’s more like a coping mechanism for a population stuck on a ride that spins too fast. Nostalgia is an evolutionary advantage and if we didn’t have nostalgia, “Running Up That Hill” wouldn’t experience a rightful resurgence -- not just appreciated as a great song (it always was!) but reaching the critical mass necessary to make it a hit record.
Anyway, I think of “Running Up That Hill” when I listen to “Want Want,” which goes about accomplishing the mission of slowing down the ride using a completely different approach. Instead of sending both Meredith Brooks’ “Bitch” and Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song” individually (back) up the charts and letting our brains mash them together in whatever way resonates, Rogers mixes the drink for us, specifying the over-driven rhythm and fully saturated, high contrast guitars of “Bitch” and the euphoric pop rush of “Fight Song.” Together, under the Maggie Rogers banner, the two combine into a song about non-specifically (the vagueness inherited from “Fight Song”) desiring in a taboo-coded (the ostracism inherited from “Bitch”) way. It’s watered-down, yes. “Want Want” doesn’t have half the gender-deconstruction of “Bitch” nor the manic confidence of “Fight Song,” but it serves to conjure those influences in a satisfying and, especially, well-blended track. It’s nothing new and that’s the whole point. We didn’t have enough time to fully dissolve in these styles, songs, and ideas the first go round and there’s no merit to pushing forward and innovating without first reckoning with the past.
