My Hero academia and language: the very first foreshadowing of who Dabi is (Bnha spoiler 290)
Now we know the truth. Finally we know who Dabi is. Despite the great delay, I wanted to share one of the first detail that convinced me they were brothers. Actually the veryfirst one.
I’m not that good with Japanese language. Ok, I’m not at all. However after a little of self study and much more anime I’ve made mine some regular expressions. I’m pretty sure most of anyone who’s into anime know, I’m sure of it. I’m talking about basics as “my name is” , “I am...” , “thank you” and “I’ll definitely be the pirate’s king”. Well maybe the last one isn’t something i said when I went to Japan.
Studying a little more seriously I found out, not much of a surprised really, that as any language as a specific dialect, which is somewhat preferred. Actually what we hear in anime is not that realistic of the language and is inclined to follow the rules that usually you learn when studying regular Japanese.
One of the most general and less dialect I think you might address then is Kanto’s , where Tokyo is located. Being the capital isn’t much of a surprise either.
Still My Hero Academia is peculiar. In fact the series take place in an imaginary city called Musufatu placed somewhere near Tokyo. However many characters come from or they are from different prefectures.
This can be caught easily with Fat Gum. This is easily lost in transnational when reading the manga but if you listen closely his way of speaking isn’t anime standard. There are few very well known words that seems to be ... awkward or unheard, that’s it if you chew the language through anime.
One of the best example happen when he beat Rappa, whil he unsleash the tremendous power he stored inside his body. If you would stick to subtitles you’ll see he’s thanking Kirishima; however he doesn’t say “arigatou” but “okini” instead.
This is a rather not so commonly used form to say thank you and it’s spefically used in the Osaka’s dialect. And it makes sense : that’s we’re Fat Gum is from there after all.
Many students are from different prefecture but unfortunately I’m not that good to point out some other linguistic peculiarity. Although I believed that a manga like this, which keep in consideration where characters are from while writing down their speeches, should have had some consistency of two characters where brothers, making they talk in the way or dialect.
After founding out that Todoroki are all from Shizuoka, Shoto included, and that most likely Enji had his sons and daughter be born in his hometown or he moved to Musufatu after his youngest son’s birth. Knowing this I was determined into examining Dabi’s and Shoto’s way to phrase their sentences, trying to finding out some hint they indeed came from the same family because they used the same dialect or some sort of idiomatic sentence which is common only between those two and Todoroki and no other characters. And the answer... yes, there’s something.
Those two speak Japanese pretty nearly, however both aren’t as respectful as they should be. For example they don’t use onorifics. But the best example of them being brothers and speaking alike comes straight from Dabi’s very first introduction. Dabi’s was first seen during the tournament, in which Shouto used for the first time a peculiar way to say “sorry”. Many could link “sorry” to words like “Gomen” , “gomen nasai” and other variants.
However Shoto asks pardon twice in the tournament: right at the beginning and when he freezes Sero. And in both occasions he says “Warui”. Literally this words means bad , evil, twisted. Most commonly is used in sentences like “I’m not feeling well”. BUT in a less common and not so respectful way it can be translated and could mean “I’m sorry” , “my bad”. Shoto had never been that polite for starters, however I found that was an interested choice.
Instead let’s have a look to Dabi first meeting with Tomura. If you heard Japanese episodes, when he says he dislike him , he use once again that same word “warui”. He’s not apologising , of course, he’s saying Tomura makes him “sick”. However I find it interesting on his very first appereance, of all the words Dabi would used, the very same Shoto keep on using during that tournament was used.
Can’t be a coincidence
