I finally caved and bought myself a pair of magic earplugs. I murder earbuds. I spent the years 1999-2016 inclusive destroying pair after pair of earbuds by getting the cord wrapped around something, or the bud caught under a heavy thing in the bottom of my bag, and yanking. I'm moderately fussy about earbuds in the same way I'm moderately fussy about shampoo -- which is to say, not very, but I do need something at least one step above cheap. My very favorite ones were Sony MDR-E9s, which were $10 a pair for a good ten years, and were absolutely everywhere until Sony broke my heart by discontinuing them. I ruined about a pair a month, on average. RIP, all my pretty blue earbuds. I graduated to Bluetooth earbuds when I got tired of knocking headphones off my noggin when practicing with my hoops. I tried braiding the wires (and at one point the actual Sansa Clip MP3 player) into my hair, but there's no way to do that and also keep the pads on or the earbuds in while I'm moving. You have no idea how much time you spend untangling yourself from your goddamn headphone cords until you don't have to do it anymore. Not having a tether always running from my head to my bag got me down from $10 a month to $35-40 once or twice a year, which was nice. They survive me long enough for the battery or USB port to flake out, which as cheap as I am, is about six months. Generally I got the ones with a wire linking the two buds. Acesori is nice for the (very low) price, as is Phaizer. (The magnetic backs are a nice touch -- they're meant to stick to each other when you wear them around your neck, but the buds are light enough that they'll also stick to, like, the fridge, or the side of my clothing rack, even with the USB charge cable hanging off of them.) I wanted the magical musical earplugs, but when I started looking around for them, AirPods were $160 when you tried to buy them without an iPhone attached. That's about $120 more than any sane person ought to be paying for a set of tiny speakers, no matter how snazzy they are. No. Just, no. I finally drove another set of Phaizers into the ground, so I went looking around on Amazon, and lo and behold, true wireless earbuds are down in the $35-40 range now. I have trouble convincing myself to spend money on just about anything, but I really do use these things every single day, and I go mad without a music player, so I gritted my teeth and clicked the order button. My main thought is, "I'm gonna lose these damn things someday." MicroSD cards have already gotten down to the point where you could accidentally insufflate the equivalent of the Library of Congress, and I have several times had to play hot-and-cold with my earbuds to find where I put the fucking phone down. ("My podcast is still running, it has to be in the house somewhere.") Now I have little plastic things smaller than my thumb joint that are streaming music into my ears from my tablet, that is... somewhere on the bed? And running Google Play Music, so it's actually spooling data from servers in, I have no idea, California? Iowa? The Marianas Trench? Who knows. It just finished playing something Samira Saïd recorded in Arabic like twenty years ago. I'm training myself to put them back into the case every single time I take them out of my ears. I've made it like three days and I still know where both of them are. So far, so good. I bought these, if anyone cares. I have no idea why they all insist they are for iPhone/Samsung; Bluetooth is Bluetooth, and they play fine with a really rather nice Lenovo IdeaPad Touch, a perfectly acceptable Kindle Fire 7, and an Alcatel OneTouch "smartphone" that rides the short bus to phone school. The case is also the charger; each bud is supposed to get 3-4 hours of play on a 45 mAh battery, with an additional 650 mAh reservoir in the case, which should be enough to cope even with me. They're about 98% as awesome as I thought they would be. The sound quality is solidly "$35 earbuds". They're not hyperintelligent Bose noise-canceling studio headphones. You are not going to master an album on these. On the other hand, they're pretty good earplugs -- that's how they stay in place. Any drivers with halfway decent bass response are going to sound pretty good when you jam them directly into your ear canals. The tannoy on the T sounds like the grown-ups in the Charlie Brown cartoons when I have them in, but the tannoy on the T sounds mostly like that when I have them out, too. The important part is that I can hear my music, and I cannot hear the conversation you're having on your speakerphone in the middle of the train car about that embarrassing medical condition, and that's all I care about. The downside is that they are not especially robust, and they're too small to have any controls on the earbud itself. The ones with the linking wire have the charge port/battery/buttons on one bud and I'm pretty sure the Bluetooth module is in the other; these have to have a Bluetooth chip and battery in each earplug, which doesn't leave a lot of room for anything else, so the only control on the earbuds themselves is a single click button. One click on either bud for play/pause, and press-hold to turn them on or off individually. You have to do everything else on the actual widget that is streaming the audio. I know most people are already staring at their phones all the time, but mine doth not internet, so it's usually in my bag, and I have to dig it out to skip a song. The earbuds have a very anxious-preoccupied attachment style with respect to the phone, and hate intervening walls, but I suspect I probably could have solved that issue by spending another $10 on them. In theory, they're Class III devices, which should have a range of about 10 meters, but in practice they're twitchy and have no real shielding, so if there's anything weird like power lines or catenary wires around, they get more like 5-10 feet. I shouldn't ever be farther from my bag than that, but still. The most interesting glitch is one I didn't expect. Instead of both pairing with the device, one bud pairs with the device, then the second bud pairs with the first. If there's any lag at all -- because, I don't know, the impedance of my head has suddenly changed? -- the audio gets ever so slightly out of sync. Like, milliseconds. It's not noticeable at all with music, where the stereo field tends to be wide and the background very busy, but it makes audiobooks or podcasts sound odd. If it's not specifically done as a radio drama, voice-only things tend to be recorded as if they're mono, from a single mic with no spatial orientation, but mixed down as two identical stereo channels, because everything expects stereo nowadays and it's easier than trying to dig through the menus for that one weird setting. The result is a voice track that seems to originate from a source that's "nowhere"/somewhere the middle of your head. When the buds slip out of sync, the slight temporal shift effectively becomes a slight shift in stereo phase, which suddenly either makes the voice seem to have a physical location, or be coming simultaneously from a source on either side, depending on how long the delay is. It's interesting on a technical level, but mildly annoying, so I've taken to just sticking one of the buds back into its case if I want to listen to podcasts. Which is what I do most of the time with the ones that hang around my neck anyway, so I can hear the stop announcements on the bus. Hi there friends! Welcome to episode 4! Transcript under cut
Nick: Welcome to another stirring installment of Adulting With Autism
Liz: I’m here this time
Nick: Yes there is another human with me. Things are back to normal. It’s nice. We only have one question this week so I’m going to assume that everything is fine and dandy for most people, everybody’s having a swell time
Liz: Or our advice was so good nobody needs to answer any more questions
Nick: I think we’ve solved life, we’ve solved being an adult which is great but it means the follow-up is going to be a tough one. It’s like, you know, Orson Wells made Citizen Kane but then Magnificent Ambersens. People don’t talk about that as much
Liz: Never heard of it. Is it bad?
Nick: It’s alright actually, but it’s no Citizen Kane. Unlike Citizen Kane.
Liz: You can say that about all films, like the Rugrats movie. It’s no Citizen Kane
Nick: That’s because it’s better than Citizen Kane
Liz: I first watched Citizen Kane at the age of 12, at that point I did prefer the Rugrats Movie
Nick: What’s important to note is the much broader palette of colours the rugrats movie uses
Liz: More variety in outfit design as well. You wouldn’t see a Citizen Kane character in a nappy
Nick: You would most likely not, except at the very end of his life just before he uh…
Liz: No spoilers
Nick: Yeah. Just in case anybody out there
Liz: In case anybody does’nt know what happens at the end of life, we’ll just leave that until you watch the film
Nick: Keep things a mystery, you know? we seem to have been temporarily rebranded into a film podcast by accident, which is great. That’s what everybody’s here for.
Liz: Yeah if there’s one thing the world needs is more film podcasts
Nick: There’s just not enough of them. We have a question…
Liz: We do, we have exactly one question and it’s from anonymous
Nick: I like them, they’ve given us a lot of material over the past weeks
Liz: I prefer their early work
Nick: Me too
Liz: Well, The Legion would like to know how to keep up with household chores if you get tired or executive dysfunction
Nick: That is a good question
Liz: There’s multiple options, Option 1 you don’t. Option 2 you have housemates and they don’t mind you not doing much
Nick: Option 3 is, you’ve got to make compromises with yourself. At least say ok I’m not going to be able to get on top of everything today. But today’s dishes, tomorrow’s vacuuming or something like that. Just take it bit by bit and you might sometimes be behind it’ll at least be behind in the sense of oh this place could do with a bit of a clean rather than this place is a dump
Liz: One thing I find is quite useful for me is sometimes you might get a sudden burst of energy that’s directionless even if youre’ completely exhausted. What I do is set a 10-15 min timer on my phone and keep going until it stops. That’s enough time to do a load of washing up, tidy up a small section of a room, put some laundry in.
Nick: That seems to be something that works for you. I find I’m not a morning person but I find I start off with more energy when I do wake up
Liz: Yeah you’re like an iPhone. You charge overnight, you’re full of energy and you do something and very quickly lose all your energy
Nick: My energy levels are very very strange things. I find that I don't know if this is just me personally but I find it’s important to say “I’ll take it easy today” but I find saying that I always do the opposite
Liz: Yeah, and that’s by no means an autism thing, my mum does that. She’ s the worst person at being ill. She will have the flu and say I won’t do anything and will go and hoover the living room, do some gardening, do 3, 4 loads of washing up.
Nick: I don’t tend to tire myself out in that way I don’t tire myself out doing useful stuff.
Liz: [sneeze] sorry about that loud noise
Nick: It’s always like “ok I’m not going to write anything I don’t need to do that, I’ve done plenty lately. Oh no I’ve done 10 pages I messed up”
Liz: 10 pages? Last time you did that you wrote an entire sitcom pilot
Nick: Well, potato, po-tah-toe, p-ilot
Liz: P-ilot?
Nick: Yeah. P-ilot. Thank you for that question anon, and if anybody has any questions please do send them in because we are bereft.
Liz: We’re not even at 7 mins
Nick: Not even at 7 mins.
Liz: One thing that might be good to talk about today is surviving summer with sensory issues
Nick: Ooh that’s good because we’re dying, we’re absoluitely dying today
Liz: It’s the mid-high 20s with 70-80% humidity, which is what I like to call the death zone
Nick: I don't know where our listeners are from
Liz: According to the youtube stats we have France, Germany, the US and Canada but not the UK oddly enough
Nick: That’s interesting
Liz: Youtube says no-one from the UK has listened to our podcast. It may be incorrect but that’s interesting.
Nick: Okay, I need to explain at this point everything in this country is built to maintain heat. It’s like the country is wrapped in blankets all the time, so when it gets above 15 everyone just starts dying
Liz: Thing is when you live in cold and windy land the majority of the year your houses and buildings are desgined to keep heat in and you don’t have air conditioning except very modern buildings so when it does get hot there’s no escape
Nick: And we live in quite a traditional terraced house so we are toasty
Liz: But not in a fun cheesy way, though we can be fun and cheesy
Nick: [groans]
Liz: You are not allowed to complain about puns NickBlake
Nick: Ok
Liz: You are the one person whos not allowed you know this, for you are the font of puns
Nick: I am. Fun Times New Roman.
Liz: I have no words
Nick: I have plenty that’s everyone’s problem with me.
Liz: So yes, surviving heat.
Nick: We’ve been opening all the windows and back door and that. We’ve stockpiled a reasonable amount of icepops to keep us cold
Liz: If you have the freezer space I highly recommend going on amazon and buying 150 Mr Freeze icepops, so you know you're getting the good stuff, for 16 pounds. I don't know what that converts to in whatever currency but it’s not a lot of money
Nick: For what you get it’s pretty good
Liz: It’s pretty much wholesale
Nick: We got wholesale price iced pops, so that’s good
Liz: It does take up an entire freezer drawer but you could always not freeze all of them at once
Nick: It’s kinda great. We’ve been taking as many pajama days as possible
Liz: You’ve been having pajama days because your pajamas are not wearing clothes. I’ve just been wearing tiny skimpy outfits
Nick: Yes, light clothing as much as possible, open the windows, get 150 ice pops
Liz: Eat ice and be sexy is how to survive the summer
Nick: That’s exactly how you survive the summer
Liz: Cold foods as well. Thing is there have been studies that show things like apple juice and milk hydrate you after exercise better than water does, so logically things like that would also hydrate you better when it’s hot right?
Nick: So what you're saying is you should be a good milky boy
Liz: Or girl or non-binary person. Yeah. Or a juicy boy if you prefer. But also we had pea and mint soup yesterday. Which is apparently not a thing in the US? I have been told this
Nick: I’m very confused because I distinctly remember in my early childhood watching Rescuers Down Under and pea soup was explicitly referenced in one fo the opening scenes.
Liz: Maybe they never thought to combine peas and mint or maybe this person’s never heard of it and they’re the anti-soup Georg
Nick: Thing is it’s we’re talking about Americans thinking to put seasoning in the dish so…
Liz: To be fair though a lot of Americans are good at seasoning, it’s WASPs who are bad at seasoning. Though my friend is a WASP, they live in Upstate New York.
Nick: Ah. Maybe I think there are a lot of people in America who are good at seasoning but they’re all in the south. They’ve clumped, like chili powder when you’ve had it too long.
Liz: Not that they would understand that reference, the WASPs. I say that I am technically a WASP but it’s different
Nick: Yup, a whole nother thing. Well, we’ve dispensed some nice advice
Liz: Soupy advice
Nick: Nice soupy advice.
Liz: If you want to make pea and mint soup by the way really easy for 1 person you want 250g frozen peas you cook them in stock you add however much mint you want and you blend it. That’s it.
Nick: You can add an onion
Liz: Some people also add a potato but we didn’t
Nick: Too much potato can make it a bit starchy I think
Liz: And don’t worry if it ends up looking like green paint, it still tastes good
Nick: You're on the right track if it looks like it’s not edible
Liz: A lot of soups and stews look like that. I’ll say it a lot of my Mums cooking looks like vomit it’s delicious.
Nick: A lot of old English food doesn’t look pretty, it’s not designed to be appetising. It’s brown liquid with things in it. It’s good and keeps you going.
Liz: It coats your bones as they say
Nick: Yes it coats your bones which sounds so gross
Liz: You don’t want that you want pea and mint soup
Nick: You want bleached bones
Liz: You don’t that’s just a thing that happens in the sun
Nick: Don’t die, don’t have your bones be bleached. That’s my survival tip. Don’t die
Liz: Good survival tip, I like it
Nick: I might write a book one day.
Liz: On how to not be dead
Nick: You just put your lips together, then put some food between them. Followed by liquids
Liz: It’s probably easier if you open your lips a little bit
Nick: And I think a combination of meats and various legumes and don’t have poison.
Liz: I think we should possibly end there because we’re degenerating into just mindless rambling
Nick: I maintain my survival tips are solid
Liz: Maybe you should start your own podcast where you just talk for half an hour, see what happens
Nick: I’ll have a straw poll on that. See what listeners would want. Speaking of rambling and voices and talking and natural segues, we had an offer from one of our listeners to come on our show and chat. Nothing came of it but I think that might be an interesting angle to pursue, talking to people about how they adult with autism.
Liz: Maybe have them help answer questions. Could be fun
Nick: I think what I’m doing here is setting the floor. If you feel self conscious about what you’re saying, remember I suggested meat and legumes and not dying as survival tips. You can’t get worse than that. So yeah, if you’ve got questions let us now, if you might want to guest on the show also let us know.
Liz: If you want to contact us personally, at invisible-goats
Nick: And Nightwarbler
Liz: That’s all one word
Nick: Yup.
Liz: We’re not doing too badly for length
Nick: We’re not. Slightly shorter than usual but we have a hefty big proud boy, big nice…
Liz: Are you hoping if you keep talking like that they’ll let you on Maximum Fun?
Nick: Now you’ve rumbled me, that was my secret plan
Liz: Just call me Rumblestiltskin
Nick: Niiice. If you have any kind of oddly specific products for me to endorse for money like I’ll definitely do that. Send me some underwear or mattresses and I’ll just record all the podcasts on my nice new mattress in my nice custom underwear.
Liz: Custom underwear?
Nick: You’ll have to go one better than the others, you know
Liz: I wouldn’t turn down custom underwear it’s hard to buy bras
Nick: Send us your custom underwear and I will heartily endorse it. Just…yeah. Bespoke…coverings, that’s what I want…or...
Liz: A mattress is not a covering
Nick: It’s a covering for a floor
Liz: Only because we don’t own a bed
Nick: Send us your questions and offers to be on the show. Don’t send us underwear come to think of it that doesn’t sound like an ok thing
Liz: And we’ll be back in a couple of weeks, hopefully with more questions and less about underwear and poison
Nick: Yeah, don’t send us underwear don’t eat poison
Liz: And don’t kiss your dad square on the lips?
Nick: Yeah that’s weird. That’s a bad thing to do. Yeah, see you next time.

With Netflix, Amazon Prime, Crave and other streaming services available at the tap of a button, there’s no shortage of access to quality film and television programming. Now, Apple is throwing its hat in the ring with Apple TV+, a new video subscription service, and a seriously impressive lineup that hits screens on November 1.
Apple TV+’s monthly subscription fee is $5.99 (CAD) and will be available on the Apple TV app worldwide on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod touch, Mac and other platforms, including online at tv.apple.com with a seven-day free trial.
The service’s upcoming slate of programming includes projects by the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Octavia Spencer, J.J. Abrams, Jason Momoa, M. Night Shyamalan, Jon M. Chu and more. Read on for a complete list of everything hitting the platform on November 1, as well as upcoming fall releases.
The Morning Show Starring Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell, this hour-long drama explores the world of morning news and the ego, ambition and power dynamics behind the people who help America wake up in the morning. The series sees Aniston and Witherspoon figuring their way forward in a post-#MeToo landscape, after Carell is fired for sexual misconduct. Taking inspiration from real-life morning show hosts and scandals, the show “highlight[s] aspects of the archetype of a charming narcissist, of a generation of men that didn’t think that was bad behaviour,” Aniston tells Variety.

See Written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight and directed by The Hunger Games’ Francis Lawrence, this epic drama sets Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard in a dystopian world 600 years in the future. When Momoa took the stage at Apple Park to announce the show this past March, he invited the audience to participate in a simple exercise: to close their eyes. “Try to think about the world this way,” he instructed, as ambient forest noises were projected through the theatre, “heard, touched, smelled, sensed—but without sight.” That, in a nutshell, is the premise of the show: after a virus has decimated humankind and rendered the remaining population blind, survivors must adapt and find new ways to navigate the post-apocalyptic world.

Dickinson This dark comedy “explores the constraints of society, gender and family through the lens of rebellious young poet, Emily Dickinson.” The coming-of-age story set in the mid-1800s stars Hailee Steinfeld as the titular character and Jane Krakowski as her mother, as well as recurring roles played by Wiz Khalifa, John Mulaney and Matt Lauria.

For All Mankind This series imagines a world in which the United States loses the Space Race, presenting an alternate timeline in which the USSR is the first country to make it to the moon, leaving NASA devastated. According to Variety, “that single twist unspools a complicated alternate history of U.S. astronauts and politicians alike scrambling to keep up as the Soviet Union laps them on space exploration.”

Helpsters From the makers of Sesame Street, this new children’s series stars Cody and his team of Helpsters—vibrant monsters who love to solve problems. “Whether it’s planning a party, climbing a mountain, or mastering a magic trick, the Helpsters can figure anything out,” reads the show description.

Ghostwriter A reboot of the ’90s children’s program, this series follows four kids as they are brought together by a mysterious ghost in their neighbourhood bookstore who is releasing fictional characters from works of literature into the real world. According to TV Line, “each episode will focus on a particular literary work, and feature classics and new works commissioned from authors like DJ Machale and Kwame Alexander.”

The Elephant Queen This wildlife documentary’s filmmakers—Mark Deeble and Victoria Stone—have spent 25 years living in the East African bush, making them the perfect directors for a film that serves as a “cinematic love letter” to a species in danger of extinction. Narrated by Oscar-nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor, the documentary follows an elephant matriarch named Athena as she leads her herd across grasslands and woodlands in search of water.

There will also be a lot of TBD Oprah Winfrey content. Along with two documentary projects, one about mental health and one about workplace harassment, Winfrey has announced the launch of “the most stimulating book club on the planet.”
More Apple TV+ originals being added to the app later this fall include:
Servant M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller follows a Philadelphia couple in mourning over the loss of a child. “Their only way to cope is through what Shyamalan called a form of “fringe therapy”: pretending their baby is still alive by replacing her with a doll,” reports IndieWire. The eerie trouble begins when the couple decides to hire a young nanny to take care of their pretend child. The series stars Lauren Ambrose, Toby Kebbell, Nell Tiger Free and Rupert Grint.

Truth Be Told Starring Oscar winner Octavia Spencer and Emmy winner Aaron Paul, this insightful drama explores America’s obsession with true crime podcasts. Spencer plays a podcaster compelled to revisit the murder case that made her a media sensation, while Paul plays the man she helped put behind bars. The series also stars Lizzy Caplan and Mekhi Pfifer.

Little America Written by Oscar-nominated screenwriters (and real-life couple) Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V Gordon, this anthology series is based on the real-life stories of immigrants in America that were featured in Epic Magazine. “It’s not about telling immigrant stories. These are human stories that feature immigrants,” Nanjiani said at Apple Park in March. “When you get to know someone and start to see your struggles in their struggles, your passion in theirs, your problems in theirs, they stop being the ‘other.’”
The Banker Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson star as two African American entrepreneurs who try to circumvent the racial limitations of the Jim Crow era by devising a risky plan to provide housing loans to the African American community in a town in Texas. The film also stars Nicholas Hoult and Nia Long, and will premiere at the AFI Fest next month.
Hala After its Sundance premiere and subsequent screening at TIFF this year, this film by Minhal Baig—who has worked on acclaimed TV series like Bojack Horseman and Ramy—was picked up by Apple for wider distribution. It tells the story of a Pakistani-American teenager grappling with her sexuality, faith and Muslim upbringing as she gets ready to graduate from high school.
