Adventure Time has the best redemption arcs

I love deep-diving into my favourite shows, which makes me lucky that Adventure Time has been analyzed to death.

It's awesome because it feels like the show itself is growing up along with Finn. The older seasons are a lot more episodic and focused on the surreality of Ooo. Meanwhile, the later seasons really embrace the show's complicated lore and the idea that morality isn't black and white. The progression of maturity in this one show is INSANE. As the show becomes more mature, so does main character Finn, physically and emotionally.

Nowhere are the show's themes and Finn's personal growth better demonstrated through the show's use of redemption arcs. As the show progresses, classical villain-hero archetypes are subverted to show that Finn is learning that people aren't exclusively good or bad. As the show and Finna age, being a hero or doing the right thing evolves from the basic idea of "fighting evil" to being empathetic and seeking peace.

Heavy spoilers for the main series after the cut.

Some context

I just wanna mention some facts about the show's history.

If you watch the first AT episode followed by the last episode, you're gonna feel disoriented. They're clearly the same show, but it feels like they have very different goals. Early AT is more lighthearted and less serious. The episodes have morals, but they're pretty simple. The randomness of Ooo is played more for comedy than for lore purposes.

Around season 5, the show started taking on a different direction. It's still funny and weird, but the characters are more fleshed out and the messages the show is trying to convey require a lot of digestion. For example, Princess Bubblegum is always smart, but the way she's depicted in episodes like"Enchiridion" vs "Burning Low." Although I consider this a massive improvement, it's unclear how much was pre-planned. Was PB always destined to become a control-obsessed, unethical ruler-scientist? Or was her initial characterization just Finn's crush?

Yes.

Episodes as early as season 1 ep 24 ("What have you done?") show PB acting more like a tyrant than a princess and have the Ice King depicted in a less antagonistic matter. The reason for the tonal shift in the later season is that as Finn grows up, his experiences change the way he perceives reality.

Ooo through Finn's eyes

Adventure Time is about Finn the human and Jake the dog, but really it's mostly about Finn.

The other characters get character arcs and have plot-relevant conflicts, but the show's main focus is dedicated to Finn's coming-of-age story. Finn is Ooo's hero: he's social, caring, and brave, and he's motivated by a strong sense of justice and a desire for adventure. All he wants is to try new things and help others at any cost.

However, he's only 12, at least at the beginning. His idea of being a hero is rooted in black/white morality. If you do bad things, then you're bad. Stopping bad people makes you good. And as a 12-year-old, he believes the only way to stop bad people is through violence.

The show is immature in this respect, too. For the first few seasons, there are two main antagonists. There's the recurring Ice King and his plots to force princesses to marry him, playing off the "save the princess" trope (more on him later). And then there's the Lich, who's a genuinely powerful cosmic entity that seeks to destroy life in all its forms. Naturally, Finn fights them both off through righteous punching.

The show presents this basic understanding of evil, that evil is as evil does. In the beginning, there's almost no nuance to these characters. And this is true with good characters, too.

Billy is a huge catalyst for Finn's character development, but you can see the show's limited understanding of heroism in his debut episode. Billy is Finn's predecessor in a way, being the number one fighter against evil. In "His Hero," Billy realized the fighting evil through violence didn't treat the root problem, opting instead for community activism. However, the show makes this look like a bad thing, with the moral of the episode being that violence can solve problems. Ironically, Finn's character development mirrors Billy, as he realizes over time that he fighting evil might mean hurting people he cares about. Case in point: Simon Petrikov, the Ice King.

The power of redemption arcs

Redemption arcs are controversial because they're ideal but they feel forced if they go unearned. In Adventure Time, redemption arcs serve a two-fold purpose: to convey the message that "evil" people can be understood and rehabilitated and to show Finn's developing maturity as he realizes this.

Ice King

The first character to get a real redemption arc is the Ice King. Initially, he's portrayed as Jake and Finn's natural nemesis, especially when he targets Princess Bubblegum. However, as the show goes on, it becomes clear that the Ice King isn't really malicious; he's just lonely and he doesn't know how to socialize in an appropriate way. Over time, he becomes a sympathetic villain. However, this changes with the Christmas specials "Holly Jolly Secrets, parts 1 and 2." In this episode, Finn and Jake discover the Ice King used to be a man named Simon, whose personality and sanity were corrupted by magic. Simon's backstory is further developed in "I Remember You" and "Simon and Marcy." From this point on, Finn starts referring to the Ice King as Simon, acknowledging Simon's true self and stops treating him less harshly. This leads to a really heartwarming moment in "Don't Look," where Finn's perception literally warps reality, causing the IK to revert to Simon (in appearance but not in personality).

Consequently, the Ice King becomes less antagonistic in general and we even get IK-centric episodes where he takes on a heroic role. For all intents and purposes, post-season 3 Ice King is Finn's friend. The show went from using a cliché villain-type to dedicating a significant amount of time and plot to Ice King's eventual return as Simon. From this, Finn learns that treating people with kindness is imperative to stopping evil. Not only did finding out that IK's personal life was tragic but by treating him as a friend he diminished IK's evil inclinations.

Magic Man

Magic Man is one of the more disturbing characters on the show. He always shows up to do something gross or psychologically messed up. Unlike the Ice King, who was shown to be evil because he wanted companionship, Magic Man wants people to suffer out of pure contempt for the world. His "pranks" include simple stuff like turning Finn into a foot, to more deranged acts like forcing Jake to escape a dream world where doing so would mean destroying all his new friends.

What's interesting about Magic Man's redemption arc is that Finn and Jake have little to do with it. Magic Man redeems himself practically by accident.

We gradually learn that Magic Man's wife was destroyed by GOLB, a powerful entity that can erase things from all realities. So Magic Man's cruelty is best described as frustration or vengeance to an extent. He is constantly suffering, which he tries to mitigate by deriving pleasure from others' suffering.

However, he eventually loses his magic powers (and with it, his anger and sadness) in"You Forgot Your Floaties", grounding him back in reality. From then on, his journey is one of atonement. He tries to reconcile with his family and seeks forgiveness from the people he has tortured.

This arc says more about the show's maturity than it does about Finn's. Although Finn shows no hatred towards a magic-less Normal Man, he seems pretty indifferent. The show, on the other hand, takes the time to make him a tragic figure and offers him a chance at redemption. It wants the audience to know that experiencing loss is not an excuse for being a jerk, but it can explain someone's actions.

King Man's (his title after rejoining the Martian community) redemption arc also demonstrates AT's advancing writing skills. Instead of giving King Man a clear-cut redemption arc, the show depicts him as genuinely sorry without changing his personality. King Man is still obsessed with Margles and is harsh with Martian prisoners, but he's no longer angry with the world. He hasn't moved, as is difficult to do with grief, but he wants to contribute to society instead of rage against it.

Betty Grof

Betty marks a milestone in the show and Finn's personal growth. She is the first antagonist who is shown to be sympathetic from the start. It helps that we know Betty before she goes crazy with magic, but despite that, Finn nor the show ever thinks of Betty as an "evil" character. She's misguided and unethical but well-intentioned.

Betty's whole deal is that she wants to be with Simon, which requires curing him of the Ice King Crown's effects. However, after she absorbs Magic Man's madness and sadness, she starts undertaking strategies that cause Ice King more stress than good.

She becomes a true antagonist in the Elemental mini-series when she prioritizes Simon's recovery over the lives of Ooo's inhabitants, despite the Ice King begging her to save his friends. Even after she betrays Finn, he doesn't seem to see her as a villain specifically. The real source of conflict in the Elemental series was more so the unchecked emotions of Finn's friends; Betty was just an obstacle.

Betty's redemption arc is completed in the show's finale. Betty summons GOLB, risking the entire universe's destruction to save Simon. Except her goal is not only to save Simon but to save their relationship. In an act of self-sacrifice, Betty manages to banish/merge with GOLB to save Ooo, despite knowing she could never be with Simon.

However, it's not as clear as I make it out to seem. While Betty does sacrifice her relationship with Simon, she still manages to save him, begging the question: if Betty couldn't save Simon, would she have made that decision? (I'm inclined to think no, but let me know what you think!)

Even if the "redemption" part of her arc feels rushed, it's Betty's journey that highlights the show's maturity. Just because she does bad things doesn't mean she's a bad person. Finn gets this; he doesn't blame Betty for almost destroying the world. He's more focused on aligning with her desire to save Simon and the rest of Ooo.

Through Betty, Adventure Time explains that it's impossible to judge people as good or evil. To do the right thing doesn't mean to help people who you think are "good" or oppose people you think are "evil" but to find common ground and a common goal.

Uncle Gumbald

He's basically the last antagonist of the show. I don't think there's a lot to say about him that hasn't already been said, so this section will be short.

He's a lot like PB in that he's a visionary. Their conflict stems from their competing ideas and the fact that they both want to subjugate each other.

They almost reach an understanding in the finale when they experience each other's lives, with PB realizing that Gumbald deserved to be treated as an equal. However, he isn't redeemed because he attempts to subjugate PB anyways by faking a truce. I feel like this was supposed to highlight PB's character growth as early PB definitely wouldn't have been willing to share authority.

Fern

I would say this is probably the most important redemption arc for Finn's character. It's weird to say that because Fern is introduced so late into the show and his arc is completed when he dies in the last minutes of the finale. Furthermore, he's a strange character to begin with. He's a grass clone of Finn made from two magic swords, and he's hardly antagonistic toward Finn except in the last two seasons.

But let's look at what we're dealing with here.

Fern's internal conflict is an identity crisis. At one point in the series, Finn comes into contact with a past self (merging timelines situation, dw about it), turning one of his selves into a sword. It's intentionally ambiguous at first, but it's eventually revealed that there is a miniature Finn inside the sword who is cognisant of the world around him. Because of Real Finn's carelessness, Sword Finn ends up getting busted, and eventually infected with a grass parasite, creating Fern.

Up until now, Finn has been acing his new pacifist approach to conflict resolution. He now prioritizes understanding someone's actions and reasoning with them, saving fighting as a last resort.

Fern represents Finn's greatest empathy challenge: trying to understand someone he thinks he already understands. To do this, Finn has to accept that his preconceived notions of Fern are wrong and take the time to get to know the real Fern. He thinks that because they share some sort of biology and memories, they are the same people. He fails to acknowledge the different life experiences that have forged him and Fern into distinct people.

When Fern heel-turns into an antagonist, it's not a surprise. We have seen repeatedly the jealousy that he feels outcasted by the real Finn. We also know he's frustrated with the dissonance between his past "life" and his current circumstances. Like Betty, Finn doesn't see Fern as a villain. However, he doesn't try to understand where Fern is coming from. He assumes that because they are similar, Fern will be willing to talk things out. In other words, Finn wants to reconcile with Fern but doesn't get how devastating Fern's identity crisis is.

In the finale's dream-dimension fight sequence, we see Finn finally hear out Fern's concerns and the two explore Fern's past together.

Fern does die because of plot reasons, but not before re-establishing his and Finn's friendship. I don't really like it when stories sacrifice one character for another's development, but it makes sense given Finn's narrative is about realizing that doing the right thing isn't always a feel-good experience. Finn wants the people he cares about to be safe, and he knows that Fern is in danger by siding with malicious characters like Gumbald. Fern also decides to align with people who care about him rather than someone who wants to use him. If Fern's villain arc is caused by feelings of inadequacies, then it's resolved through self-acceptance. Redeeming Fern requires Finn to truly understand Fern, but this means Finn loses someone who gets him.

I think it's implied Fern could never be at peace alive, since the grass demon was keeping him alive while corrupting his heart. It's a unique take on a heroic sacrifice: setting Fern free means letting Fern go.

Misc. thoughts

Not all redemption arcs are equal. I wanted to touch on a few mini-redemption arcs that either didn't fit the post or had a lesser impact on the story. These aren't relevant to the text, so feel free to skip to the conclusion.

Irredeemable villains

Some AT antagonists never get redemption arcs. These are usually one-off villains who don't get much characterization apart from just being evil. I don't think that AT wants to imply these people are beyond help (see Magic Man for proof), but maybe becoming a good person means that someone has to understand you first, which is harder to do in some cases. Examples include:

Redemption arcs?

Originally, I wanted to write a section on Princess Bubblegum and how she gradually releases her iron grip on her kingdom. However, I decided against it because Finn never really sees her as a bad person. However, understanding that she's not perfect is definitely part of her arc. If I were to write about PB, it'd have to be a separate article, probably incorporating how Marceline plays into her character development and how her relationship with evolves over time.

Another character I omitted from this analysis was Lemongrab. I wouldn't describe his arc as a redemption arc because I feel it was more focused on self-discovery than making up for his past actions.

Finally, I thought about writing about the Lich's transformation into Sweet Pea, but I almost don't count it since they are essentially two different characters. A redemption arc to me means that a character undergoes a change of heart. I feel like Sweet Pea is more like the Lich reborn, and while you can argue that the events in "Whispers" are the good Lich fighting against his dormant persona, I feel like it's clear that Sweet Pea and the Lich are not one and the same. Either way, Sweet Pea being the Lich's redemption is to muddy to discuss in this context.

Becoming good

One thing I like about Adventure Time is that no one tries to make the bad guys turn good. Redemption arcs are mostly self-initiated. With characters like Ice King, Finn doesn't try to turn him into a hero, he just stops treating Simon like a villain. Unlike in other media, heroes and villains are not real roles in AT. They are more like social constructs that are easily altered once you start to empathize with supposed villains.

But while "villains" is a flexible term in AT, evil-doing is not. AT puts forward the standard that people should seek forgiveness and atone for the ways they've caused harm. It's a pretty grown-up idea that we should own up to our actions but also forgive people who want to be forgiven.

Conclusion

In Adventure Time, Finn wants to be a hero, but in trying to do so, he needs to answer this question: "What makes a hero?" Originally, the show asserts that a hero is someone who beats up bad guys and obeys people in authority. But as Finn and the audience get older, the show's ideas evolve, too. Through the use of its extensive rogue gallery, Adventure Time affirms that "bad people" are usually just normal people with personal issues. Heroism becomes less associated with righteous violence and more geared towards empathy and reconciliation. Eventually, Finn and the show give up on the hero-villain dichotomy, acknowledging that these categorizations prevent people from helping those who need it most.

Note: this is the first analysis I've posted on Tumblr and I'm planning on writing more with the goal of getting better at writing and media literacy. Additionally, I really love this franchise and I'm always down to discuss it further. Please let me know what you all think?

To be honest, I feel uncomfortable that Transformers fandom has a tendency to want Optimus only to be morally flawless.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that you have to love all OP.

I fully understand with all my respect if you only want that kind of Optimus who is morally flawless.

The problem is the overcriticism of him who does not fit that standards of fandom.

Optimus is like the icon of Transformers. so he's in everyone's head like a soup with the images of all continuities rather than being thought of separately in each universes.

And if some Optimus in a particular continuity is being morally gray or making bad choices, people simply just read the wiki or read posts about that or ignore about the context why he made such choices then overcriticize him with confidence like he's the only one who's done wrong/bad things in the story.

And that's… that's just so weird. I've seen so many posts that overcriticizing him and getting self-righteous. They seem to feel themselves like… morally neat when they criticize Optimus. "I'm a very smart and analytical person who can spot these flaws even this overrated moral icon character!"

and... idk why but they are also obsessed with collecting Optimus' little faults and saying that Optimus should beg Megatron for forgiveness for THAT.

It's really weird considering Megatron also has done so many wrong things and they're always throwing same shits at each other in stories, but beyond that, above all, THEY ARE ALREADY PAST THAT STAGE!!

The two are no longer care about minor disputes in the past!!!

Megatron just wants to make Optimus know that his way is wrong, you little blind idealist, and Optimus is like "please just stop that madness and genocide and colonization. Universe hates us for this."

Do you really think that if Optimus apologizes to Megatron for the little things he did wrong in the past, the war will end just magically? AND DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT OPTIMUS NEVER TRIED SUCH THINGS DURING THE WAR?

I mean, if you really love and understand Optimus Prime, you should know that Optimus would have tried all the nonviolent ways to end the war arleady!

The initial feud between the two is no longer a matter now!The war between of them is now nothing but a huge ideological conflict!!

They are just divorced old men with a long history, not a fresh couple just started meeting each other!!!!!!

I just can't understand unless they enjoy criticizing the character who is considered as a moral icon to self-righteous themselves. I would fully understand if they criticize other characters equally, but no, they always have a huge double standard just for Optimus.

if they are all just nothing but Optimus haters, I still don't like it, but I could understand but this is also actually happening in Optimus fandom. Please show some love for him. at least don't try to prove your morality through him. please.

Oh I just read through what I wrote and I can see my anger is being expressed like a gradation LMAO I'm so sorry lol

anyway, so, yeah, please just see him as the same way like when you see the other common characters.

If you don't think of him as an overrated moral icon, or someone who should always be right, or a vessel of some kind of old ideologies (somehow people think that objectively correct ideologies are boring and outdated), but a person, you can enjoy the Transformers stories so much deeper. a low understanding of him will prevent you from enjoying thoes stories a lot. Like those ppl who blame Optimus just for cooperating with Ghost, without thinking about the consequences of not cooperating with them.

btw, the reason why I deleted my old tumblr was largely because of this. Back then, IDW Megatron was showing his redemption arc, and IDW Optimus was making mistakes to keep the peace he had barely achieved. and… yeah, I think you would know what was happend in Tumblr at the time. I left the fandom for 4 years because of that. The funny thing is, I didn't even know I was in love with Optimus until then. Anyone who knew me at that time would know how crazy I was about MTMTE lol

OMFG THE WAY I JUMPED /POS OK SO .

1st off, with Casey Junior and Cassandra I have had SO many thoughts about them and their family. their designs and basic storyyy:

Junior and Casey are cousins in this AU but they were both raised by the foot clan - aka uncle Louie and uncle Brutus to Junior, and Dad and Pops to Casey respectively. Junior is a trans dude and because their parents thought it'd be funny when they were born they named them both "Cassandra." When Junior transitioned Cass let him keep the name Casey under ONE condition, that she would remain the one true Casey and that he had to go by "Junior" anytime she was around. Of course they're pretty much attached at the hip so everyone just calls him Junior anyway.

The reason they were raised together is because Junior's parents died when he was 6 and Junior went to go live with Casey's family. They're related through Louie (foot lieutenant if you couldn't guess) and are Technically half siblings since Louie's sister was the one who carried Casey but they never related to each other that way. To them they're just cousins who are basically siblings.

Junior's parents never swore loyalty to the foot clan and although he was HEAVILY encouraged by his uncles to join and put more effort into the clan he never really Cared that much. CASEY on the other hand eats sleeps and breathes the foot - at least as much as her parents let her. She needs a hobby. (One kid is too obsessed while the other isn't obsessed enough watcha gonna do.)

In terms of their relationship to the turtles Casey first met Raph b4 he knew that the foot clan was a threat. Raph just thought that her family were huge sneakerheads that also just so happened to be extremely into martial arts and it's history. Finding out Raph was bigender is actually what caused Casey to first start questioning her gender identity and she's now a she/him demigirl lesbian. YES they are in gay love ofc.

Casey' age: 16-18 (same as Raph)

Junior's age: 14-16 (same as Mikey)

And in terms of shredder it's probably just gonna be a copy-paste canon shredder of course with some minor adjustments. The foot clan still run the foot shack as a front (Junior works there) they're still trying to bring back the shredder. But I'd imagine that Casey turned on the foot clan much sooner than she did in the snow due to her relationship with Raph. So in terms of the finale instead of being redeemed at the end of the episode she would be fighting right alongside the hamatos. This is also my wish fulfillment au in which every character who WAS gonna have a nice complete redemption arc DOES have a nice complete redemption arc cause I don't have to worry abt time restraints.

OH YEAH ALSO THIS MINI comic with splinter and junior talking because they both lost their parents rlly young:

This is actually the comic I was talking abt earlier. I wasn't able to finish it when I first started it so each "page" you see is like .... 3 days a part which is why the style is so fucking inconsistent 😭.

Forgot to mention: They are "younger sibling getting taller than you" solidarity. And Casey not being a higher ranking turned into her parents desperately trying not to produce a nepo baby lol

I feel like if they were to make another Scooby Doo series, they should reboot the 13 Ghosts (properly this time). Lemme tell you why:

(Also Note: I have not seen the 13 Ghost movie in it's entirety so pls just keep that in mind)

okay so first we could have that found family dynamic that everyone loves and that the 13 Ghosts had amazing set up and some execution but i don't think reached it's full potential.

Dad!Vincent parenting a bunch of wack kids who insist on helping put the demons back and they keep showing up at his house how did they even find this address I live at the top of a cliff in the middle of nowhere what do you mean you brought my Chinese food - that delivery person gave you my adress didn't he I always knew he was a bad egg

Next I think that we should get a proper Flim Flam and Vincent backstory - how did they meet? where? Why is Flim Flam staying with Vincent? and we could have some added depth there

And an cool aspect of Flim Flam and Vincent's relationship is that Vincent is a real-deal wizard where Flim Flam is (like his name suggests) a con artist. I think this could bring an interesting facet to their relationship and maybe even drive the inner conflict of at least one episode

Then I think that we should have more lore abt the Chest of Demons, like where it came from, how they were trapped originally, etc, etc,

Explore the magical community and Vincent's place in it

along these lines ppl in the magic community must have at least heard of the Scooby Gang and their exploits - watch Scooby become a celebrity in the Magic world and have one of those cliche "fame is dangerous episodes" while building lore

Daphne leadership role!!!

I always kinda went with the idea that Daph, Shag and Scooby didn't tell Fred and Velma abt the chest bc they wanted to protect them from the demons

Like when they were originally going after the demons they weren't just tracking them - they demons were tracking them back and it often got dangerous, so we could have some tension with Fred and Velma thinking that the trio is lying to them and a heartfelt episode with that

Then I think that Weerd and Bogel deserve a redemption arc

They were always treated badly by the demons and i think that the one episode where they pretend to team up with the gang could be a turning point where they realize how teams are supposed to work and how the gang shows them (their enemies) genuine compassion

They're funny and they also have a complex dynamic that I would have liked to explore

I think that Daphne's sister (either an older one from SDMI (prob Delilah) or a younger one, like the one that was pitched with Scrappy to be his owner(kinda leaning towards this)) would be a good edition

Depending on if she was older or younger she could be a mentor or a good friend for Flim Flam and Scrappy

I see this Daphne as being more of a leader than her goofy BC self(who I love don't get me wrong) but I think that Daphne's sister could bring a goofier element with Flim Flam and Scrappy

AND

BRING BACK SCRAPPY

He was such a good boy in this series - such a good friend to Flim Flam and so supportive of his uncle

There is so much wasted potential with his character, in my opinion but that's for a whole other post probably - this has already gotten longer than i expected

anyway that's most of my ideas - i probably have more somewhere in my head

It's so funny to me how when a villain undergoes a redemption arc people will go "ummm, he's still gotta go to jail though? he's killed people! he's done illegal things!" like okay sure, you wanna be all "be gay do crimes!" but in a high-fantasy setting far removed from our own world we totally have to abide by the United States legal system. Just know that your protagonist faves won't be getting off the hook either in that case, also they've broken some laws along the way, even if it were for good reasons, the law is the law, they're gonna be spending at least some time in jail, that's just how it is, sorry. :-/ Oh wait? That would be stupid because this is an escapist fantasy and there's suspension of disbelief? Huh, figures.

Maybe every series SHOULD have a final installment that's just sitting through court trials and you watch all the characters you've come to know and love get sentenced to jail. THAT sure would enhance the experience!

Rude Tales finale spoilers

...huh. that was... kind of disappointing? I guess it makes sense as a personal growth "choose yourself" sorta deal but, uh, they just sort of gave up on saving all the students and staff from eternal torture?

Like, why did they do all this just to give up on saving all those people? Why did they take the Devil at her word and not challenge her on the fact that the stuff she finds funny has actual painful consequences for others? Why didn't they listen to the demonic book's question- will it always be hell? Does it have to be? Couldn't they fight her, or do *something* to buck the status quo?

Like, after all those fight authority fuck the man themes, they just sorta make peace with the deific figure who's responsible for everyone's suffering because she's a libertarian? It feels like the same sort of "meet God at the end of the story and he's pretty chill" trope you see a lot, where someone could really easily hate the god in question because fuck that guy, he just let everyone suffer from his chill little office and we're supposed to be cool with it because he's got his own way of doing things?

Also I thought Stirfry would join in at the end, I guess that was hard to swing. Nice twist, Virginia's death did feel pretty bad so I dig the little redemption arc.

I have other complaints about stakes and character choices, but it feels like I'm being annoying at this point (why were The Unpleasantness and Lexicon Matters so easy and final to beat after all that hype and the fact that they were the center of so much conflict? (The daughter could die in hell? How's that work?) Should both have had more development as villains? Did Cordelia and Albee fail to reach the room because of Straid or did they forget about their main goal that they traveled so far and fought so hard to reach, and what were the stakes of that journey home if they could have put coins on their eyes and just shown up right by the school from the start? Should Hell have been a bigger and more conflict-heavy arc and given the setting more development after, again, a ton of expectations and hype, or would that have been filler? Yeah I'm being annoying)

To be exceedingly fair, there's clearly a lot they were juggling after Taylor left the show, and he was taking on a lot from what I heard in at least one interview, it was good that he lightened the load for his health and everything. Not fair to blame anyone for that, plus the fact that they're running two different Tabletop podcasts as a group, with a lot of production value, which is a lot.

I dunno. Is what it is, there was a lot to enjoy about those last few episodes. Loved the Stirfry theme song and Lexicon's Disney villain jazz number. Hell's entire execution and Branson's big wild description was incredibly cool. I hope Stirfry and Splish-Splash and Hot Roddy and Chaste Tools are having fun adventures.

So, about your found family head canon, I absolutely LOVE it and I wanted to give you my own take on it!!

I like to also include Candace, Razor, and Wanderer (I know that one might not make sense but hear me out lmao)

I think Cyno would Candace as a big sister! She gives off that vibe to everyone but I feel like she would be more close with Cyno considering they're both from. Or maybe they knew each other while Cyno lived in the desert. (We NEED more more Cyno lore *sob*)

As for Razor, I think during their visit to Mondstadt Razor would become intrigued with Cyno because of the ears on his helmet (hat?). Also....those two are suspiciously alike🤨 white hair, red eyes... (Cyno has lighter eyes but they're similar) I wouldn't be surprised if genshin pulled a long lost brother thing on us🧍 Anyway, I think they would become close, and Razor would look up to him a lot!! He would start to see Cyno as his "lupical" and I think Cyno would enjoy spending time with Razor, teaching him fighting tactics and so on

And Wanderer (or Scaramouche). I think his bratty mean persona would make him really...hard to be close to. But I think he and Collei would actually be somewhat "friends". I think the traveler would be talking about Collei to Wanderer and bring up her relationship with Dottore which would immediately peak his interest. And maybe he would go to see her to ask her about it, and then they would be able to bond over being victims of Dottore. I think he would gain the role of the "overprotective big brother" and glare at anyone who dare LOOK at her the wrong way. I'm not saying this relationship would be likely, it's just fun to think about!

I also think about how awkward it would be bringing up the time when Tighnari got struck by lightning....

"Master Tighnari actually got struck by lightning once! Now he has a scar on his back!"

"*Nervous sweating* Yeah......about that-"

I also hc that Kaveh and Tighnari are childhood friends!

WAAAAH Cyno and Candace are so BESTIE CODED !!! Yes candace give a big sister vibe ! I love to imagine that Cyno likes visiting Candace, when he has time... And also I imagine he participate to girls party once, with Candace Dehya Nilou Dunyarzad and Setaria. Idk. I just feel like he wants to be included. Dehya and Setaria would be a bit against at first but Candace Nilou Dunyarzad thought the idea funny, so he joined. In the end, they all spend great time ! For Razor and Cyno, yes !!! I agree with your idea. I also enjoy a lot the potential friendship between Collei and Razor !! They are both studying language, they could study together. Since Razor has more difficulty about language, Collei would help him (and I am sure she will feel accomplishment,, like,,, she is helping someone!!! in studying!!)

Razor would definitively talk about Varka to Cyno ahahaha (i love varka plz when is he playable, at least i need to know how does he look like) And for Wanderer... I saw a lot of fanart of Collei and him, trashtalking about dottore. It would be super cool if Wanderer first friend (after his redemption arc, if we don't count Nahida nor Traveler) is Collei ! I have another scenario for them starting to talk Wanderer is just chilling in Avidya Forest (missing school). Then he heard a voice in a tree... like wtf. It was a girl voice, ranting about her life. He wouldn't care a lot but then he heard the mention of Dottore. The curiosity gain him. Trash talk about dottore ?? It is not often he can hear it. Bro is eardropping (bad thing to do) but Collei notice him (someone find her hidden place, she could die of embarrassment) but Wanderer couldn't help himself to trashtalk to dottore- and they keep talking But I wonder... if Scaramouche participate in those same experiment, and saw Collei ? He was about to end the conversation, feeling guilty, and never talk to Collei again, but Collei thank him for the talk. Maybe it wouldn't bad to see her again, one day ? OOOH YOUKNOW I AM SURE KAVEH AND TIGHNARI MET WHEN THEY WERE KID. I MEAN !!!! Their parents knows each other when they were young. Maybe they met, but they wasn't that close. After Kaveh asked some advice for his project, they started to talk more, and then their friendship come more naturally Have a nice day too!!!

Favorite thing about them: He's normal. He's plain and uneventful and almost supposed to go unnoticed. Which makes him the perfect common man and character who's the easiest to relate to and see oneself into. He's the bridge between the extraordinary, superpowers world and our ordinary reality. The author loves to delve into the theme of “ordinary”, “avarege”, “uninteresting” men (x) (x) (also see: Sigma's whole character), and I think they're very good at executing it, and it really shows in the composition of Oda. It's a very compelling concept!

Least favorite thing about them: Well. Not his fault. But if I had to be honest the whole oda/zai fandom drama is, politely, quite tiring... I used to have my perplexions about Oda's moral code the first time I watched the anime, but I've long come to terms with the fact that bsd's worldviews are simply different from mine, so I don't really have issues with it anymore. I sincerely enjoyed his character during the anime rewatch of the Dark Era arc.

Favorite line: I guess “people live to save themselves” hits quite hard. I may disagree with bsd's morals, but I suppose a poignant line is still a poignant line.

brOTP: Buraiha trio,,,,,, Oda and his orphans,,,,,,, Also, I know they didn't have much space to interact in canon, but Oda and Akutagawa. It's kinda sweet how Oda stepped up to go to Akutagawa's rescue.

OTP: I like odazai a lot :) Buraiha trio too as a whole, probably.

nOTP: Oda/ngo; not because I take any issue with it (I ship pretty much everything), and I'm sure they care about each other a lot, but every single time without exception I've been exposed to fancontent of them it always framed them as “Dazai's parents”, which I personally find extremely distasteful. Personally, I perceive it as infantilizing Dazai, and it bothers me in particular in the way it clashes with the image of the Buraiha trio I have of people who respect each other and consider each other equals and on the same level despite their rank.. So, y'know.

Random headcanon: Right now I can't take off my mind this headcanon that Oda wears bracelets made for him by his orphans.

Unpopular opinion: He's the author's self-insert lmao. From the way he's the only writer character, to how Asagiri has him as their profile picture on their socials, to how he haunts the narrative but isn't directly part of it, it's really clear as the light of day for me. Which makes Dazai's reverence for and idolization of him a little funny pffttt.

Song i associate with them: I heavily associate Lovers' Suicide Oblivion by OPA to odazai. For some reason, another song that makes me think of Oda is Servant of Evil by mothy, with Oda as Allen and Dazai as Riliane. You know, I suppose. Deeply loving someone despite their being inherently evil due to being able to see the childish, genuine side of them no one else can see. Dying in front of them as the ultimate act of selfless love and their death prompting the other's redemption. One looking over the other after their death and guiding / protecting them. Yeah, I think it fits them.

Episode 32: Controlled Demolition

I'm reacting to this while doing chores, so sorry if this is super brief. Hopefully it's not too plot heavy.

Have I mentioned I hate Kepler? Honestly the worst. I don't trust any of them.

Let's see...not a fan of Jacobi either. Of course I don't like Hilbert or his Decima project (which btw, it was very nice of the virus to not attack and kill Doug during his 100+ days alone in space without Hilbert keeping him stable). But Jacobi clearly doesn't know what he's doing, leave the dangerous chemicals alone!

Also the whole idea of Doug keeping someone on task...hilarious. Makes you wonder why Kepler REALLY gave him this assignment. Maybe to keep Doug distracted.

And then Maxwell. Looks like she has an interest in AI that's not entirely hostile, but at the end of the day, she's still working for the bad guys. When push comes to shove, she's gonna have to chose between Hera and Doug and Cutter and his errand boys. But I guess I hate her the least right now out of the three. She at least detected that Hera was in pain and is trying to do something. I hate to applaud someone for doing the bare minimum but that’s where we’re at I guess.

And Hera...you could have told Doug. He would understand. He's your friend.

I feel so bad for Hera. I just know they're gonna install some program in her that forces her to hurt her friends. It's only a matter of time.

Also, of course Kepler wants to play chess. That's the most villain thing ever, threatening someone over a chess board. Just once, I want to see a villain use a less ominous board game just to be funny. Like imagine Kepler with a nice Whisky in his hands mulling over a game of "Chutes and Ladders" or “Candyland”. It would be funny. Well at least Kepler embraces the villain aesthetic.

Though it's interesting: command doesn't know where the two years of Lovelace's life went. Or at least they claim. Now I'm curious. Was it the aliens? Is Lovelace a robot clone after all? Maybe Doug was right yet again!

A liability? Fire when ready? Oh my gosh is Jacobi gonna shoot Lovelace? Or Hilbert?

What was that?

Nice of Dr. Maxwell to make sure Hera wasn't in pain. But um...what did they just destroy on the Hephaestus? Another secret lab?

Oh my gosh. Just from the way Doug says the word "is". I've pause the episode but they better not have. THEY BETTER NOT HAVE.

If they did I'm gonna go insane.

Because for the rest of my Wolf359 reactions, I'm gonna have nothing but hate and contempt for Cutter's errand boys and their stupid chess games and inability to properly inspect a chemical lab.

Episode 33: Don't Poke the Bear

Episode 34: A Matter of Perspective

People need to be nicer to Doug. He has the least blood on his hands. And every time Jacobi and Kepler talk I lose brain cells. "I do evil but it's necessary" yeah, except it's not. It's literally not. What's wrong with you?

Yikes Kepler really seems to like to tell stories. HE HAD A FUNK BAND? HABERDASHERS? WHAT?

Well I guess even cold hearted villains need hobbies. Charges of insider trading? Saw Maxwell's feet? Okay that one was weird. What's out there in the woods? "I don't remember anything from 1987?" ...why are these silly stories getting more ominous.

Is that it? Yikes that really was short. Really short did I miss something? Okay, well I guess that's it.

Kepler should have stayed with his funk band. Maybe then he wouldn't be on my airlock launching list.

So, we stumbled across your blog while browsing warrior tags and I want to know what’s going to be happening with Blackstar and Scourge in your rewrite. Keep in mind, that I haven’t fully looked at your blog or plans yet I just discovered the post regarding the age gaps writing cause it caught our interest since Ferncloud and Dustpelt made us uncomfy in canon. —Sincerely, a Darkstripe Introject

WELL Blackstar and Scourge are funny because they're lowkey seeing the same dude, Ratscar is just that desirable. I have a lot of serious plot-related plans for these two though;

Blackstar

Between him and Leopardstar, Black is actually the one who truly repents for what he did and is on a long road for redemption. Leopardstar is killed by Mistyfoot when it seems like she's lapsing back into Thistle Law; Blackstar spends every arc from TNP onward reckoning with what he supported.

After the BloodClan battle, Runningnose informs him there are "other allies in the skies" that can grant him his lives if StarClan denies him. In my rewrite, the Dark Forest CAN give lives to an eligible leader... but Blackstar refuses, and undergoes trials over several years of leadership.

Russetfur gives him his very last life.

It's also worth it to note that ShadowClan had the least amount of warriors training in the Dark Forest and was a relatively frequent ally of ThunderClan post-TNP as WindClan held the Antagonist Torch for a while. I am actually going to be chalking this up to good leadership on Blackstar's part.

(unlike canon where I think he's actually a pretty awful leader tbh)

And lastly, design-wise, he's got a broken fang from when he tries to bite Deadfoot's Gauntlet during the WindClan Massacre, and he started off as a leader with an all-black head marking like an executioner's hood, which is eroded away as he gets his lives.

Scourge

He hasn't heard that name in years.

Once the brutal leader of BloodClan, Scourge was awed by Firestar's nobility before and after the battle. "A true warrior does not need to kill to win their battles," Firestar ripped his collar off and spared him, so he does not die like he does in canon.

Scourge was sick of Clan cats not being honorable, but Firestar agreed to negotiate to uphold as much of Tigerstar's impossible promise ("half the forest for your help") as possible. Over time, BloodClan became a close ally of ThunderClan and WindClan, and Scourge eventually passed on leadership and decided to "retire" to Clan life.

He takes a Clan name, Iceheart, out of a sense of respect to the culture. He doesn't mind being called Scourge though, especially by the little kittens hearing about how he killed Tigerstar with 'one hit'

"You've been lied to... it was two hits."

He also gets expanded roles past TNP, as Mousewhisker's mentor and a generally cool grand-uncle figure to the three.

I just think he's neat and I write a lot of random little things about him.

also maybe toji can be someone who moved into the small town with his wife, little megumi and little tsumiki (i like him being a family man who found his own family after growing up in a very toxic household 😭😭😭) after satosugu left and reader kinda befriends his wife and ends up w a kind of kinship w toji bc he knows what it feels like to be abandoned so he gets her bitterness and anger better than anyone.

he isn't a big fan of those two for coming back after all the emotional rebuilding she was trying to do for herself and they don't rly like him bc he does things to keep them from coming near her. i wouldn't say he's protective of her moreso either (like c'mon its toji at the end of the day) but he thinks they'll just ruin smth he recognizes is her trying to move on by being present. ofc his wife probably knows better tho bc she's nice and recognizes they're trying.

it would also be funny to just see little megumi having a sort of affinity for reader too (maybe she babysits the kids on occasion) so he sees that she doesn't like them too much right now + his dad isn't a big fan of them either so he's got beef w them too in a way only 5 yr olds are able to beef w adults (for the heehee hahas in this angst filled fic yknow).

but food for thought! please don't feel pressured or anything to post this or read this either. i know you mentioned you had a hard time writing for someone like toji and he's probably not even relevant in your au but i think this would kinda show a great parallel in the canon story abt how satosugu aren't fond of him there too.

i really love your fic and can't wait for what you have regardless!!

i really appreciate you saying not to feel pressured nonnie, ngl with the asks i've been getting i've been feeling a little scared that people are hating the direction i'm taking the story LOL. that being said, i would love to write for toji! it's just hard for me to write him as a romantic interest since i personally am not very attracted to him (i'm the kind of person who really needs to find the personality at least somewhat attractive before finding them physically attractive).

and i love the idea of megs beefing with gojo specifically BAHAHA. megs would totally be rude to gojo, and geto would try to bribe him, and megs would grudgingly accept geto but still make faces at gojo.

a toji redemption arc does sound appealing ngl. we'll see where it takes me once i work up the energy to write more. school is already kicking my ass,,,

Favorite thing about him: Even above the shockingly complex and indepth redemption arc or the wardrobe designed to allow him to cry in front of people without them seeing it or the fact that he calls kirby a cool dude my favourite thing about him is his fuckign ears

One of the funniest dynamics in TCF is the one between Cage, Taylor and Cale.

In any other story Cage and Taylor would be pillars virtue; pious straight laced characters that serve as the annoying story aids but but nobody really likes because they encroach on the established chaos the story revels in.

But TCf really just took that idea and threw jt out the window. It throws all of their character stereotypes out the window actually.

Cage is an excommunicated Priestess, not because she realised some great secret of a corrupt church, or because she's some terrible sacrilegious heretic. She just REALLY hates having her God knows speed dial.

She quit the temple because she found it annoying, even though she never told anyone she could hear GoD, she quit because it was ANNOYING her to be a prophet. And yes she curses her God all the time, but she doesn't particularly hate him, she just finds him aggravating but still turns to him for advice. And she's unabashedly a drinker, how many female characters do you see that actually get to be drinkers that aren't light weights?

And then you have Taylor. Taylor should be the straight laced mournful brother who can't understand how it came to this, a loving older brother who was betrayed by the one he least expected which inevitably makes him an annoyance to the plot as he derails it with half baked attempts at redemption arcs.

But no, Taylor Stan is none of that. Taylor Stan is a conniving young Marquis who knows exactly ehat is going on at all times within his territory who doesn't have qualms with cutting off the rot in his life. He's also a character who goes from scheming and conniving to trying to get the MC to drink with him and call him Hyung.

And poor poor Cale. He doesn't want them around him at the beginning but not only are they key players later in the game, they're also exact fits for his personality.

It's just so funny and I love their dynamic so much. I imagine there's a scene off screen once Alberu and Cale announce themselves as sworn brothers where Cage and Taylor bemoan to Cale that he won't call them Hyung or Noona.

so I was worried about what constituted a spoiler for my review of Mafia Virgin by Mila Finelli (here's my spoiler free review) so in honor of pub day, here's a compilation of all my notes:

Your benchmark for the Emma/Buscetta dynamic is Cross/Pippa from One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean (complete with some similar language to Pippa's "I'm fascinated by your BONES" except make it foreskin), except Giacomo isn't trying to be celibate in the least, and after he gets over his obligatory 10 seconds of guilt for wanting to fuck a 20 year old virgin (a precedent set by Fausto and utterly disregarded by Enzo lolol), he's all over Emma

So what I'm also saying is, as far as mafia romances go, this isn't super intense or out there. It's definitely not a dark romance despite how it was marketed (and a big part honestly is Giacomo is too nice), BUT it's a decent mafia romance and the sex stuff is equally solid.

The real horror, if there is any, is the classic mafia thing where it's the modern world and yet she's expected to get pregnant on an extremely short timeline; also possibly a commentary on the state of our reproductive rights?

Speaking of sex stuff— I thought it was hysterical that Giacomo actually chose to consult with a (mob) doctor on how to get his wife pregnant, and if Emma actually wanted that to begin with, I would appreciate it even more. Said doctor also tells Giacomo in the babylogue that sex can induce labor so you know what that means

Also I couldn't say it in my review but this...... was the hottest passage of Mafia Virgin. I hate to say it (actually who am i kidding i don't) but it's this not only because of the novelty but it ties excellently into their mutual breeding kink and Giacomo very early on being sad about the lack of women in his life who played with his balls:

Second hottest was prob when he came in his pants after eating her out. The thing about Giacomo is that he has a few flop moments in a way that's still hot but also really funny (see: when his ex-ish mistress REJECTED him the second she found out he has a wife; like, Katarzyna and Mariella would NEVER) especially compared to Fausto, Enzo, and Giulio (well, Giulio has his own flop moments but they're mostly business related)

Also, I think everything about this exchange is just great and Giacomo is valid when he's annoyedly like "this is a me thing :/ "

On a more random note, you can't tell me Giacomo Buscetta isn't an ally even if he is deeply unimpressed by nepo bby mafioso Giulio (who is now in charge of Málaga? lol) because he tells Giulio's assassin bf Alessio he's a fan of his work

The redemption arc I neither needed nor wanted was Roberto Mancini's— this is the man who inspired a great deal of (super valid) daddy issues in both Frankie and Gia, and you're telling me he's actually a doting dad (to Emma at least)?? I want to call bullshit. Yes, parental relationships are complicated and can vary by sibling and I totally understand why Frankie and Gia are estranged from him so why...... did we need this arbitrary redemption in book 5? And it's to the point where Roberto actually is like, "oh I never told your mom to give up her career after she married; she chose to!" and to me that invalidates so much of Frankie's conflict in the first book when she really wants to go to college and fulfil her mom's dream of having an independent career when her mother couldn't, but she's forced into an arranged marriage by her father who also disowns her once the news gets out that she's Fausto's mistress.

Anyway, I'm hoping there's a pegging bonus scene. Also, we WERE teased about potential period sex stuff which also never happened :(

What is the Land of the Fallen Faries? And extra question, who inhabits it? How do you oc(s) interact with it?

Funny story. Technically technically my character's purpose is to destroy the Land of the Fallen Fairies.

Which poses quite the narrative dichotomy, I'm a fallen fairy myself, no matter how much Kamari denies it. To the dryads, We're the villains of the dryad's story, the very filth they're supposed to rid of.

But the Land of the Fallen Fairies is meant to be a safe haven for the fallen fairies, and I'm their antagonist. Their destruction, their great doom, their evil, final-battle antagonist and they should all fear me and despise my existence.

But they don't. And I cannot figure out the reason. Some backstory analysis may be needed, but it this is a major continuity error. I'm the antagonist to the antagonists. Why would they tolerate me? And no, I refuse to accept the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" trope. That one is utter nonsense.

Ah plot holes and darling murders, you wanted a whole exposition dump. Not... whatever this is. Deepest apologies. You can ignore everything above.

Okie dokie, so the Land of the Fallen Fairies is a subsection of the pixie archives and the pixie archives are mycorrhizal root systems between trees and they are actually this huge, interconnected, shared-but-separated consciousness between pixies. And pixies are fungal metaphysical beings with no set identity and backstory - like the four I know used to be one character, but separated a few years ago - making them the perfect candidates to manifest in these fluid metaphysical stories. It's wonderous actually! They test out all these characters and arcs and plotlines in this connected daydream world in a continuous searching for complexities, the darkest and brightest depths of existenc-

The Land of the Fallen Fairies - at least according to Naegi - was supposed to be a safe haven for the fallen fairies. There isn't really one in Trinity Hollow for physical bodies, so the pixies take care of the mental ones in the root systems. It sounds like found family trope to me, and I hope it is. That one is my favorite. (There isn't any obligations or expectations, one knows that their found family cares, because they do it out of their own accord.)

So.... Trinity Hollow has some backstory and I can't figure it out. What I do know is that I have to tip toe around most other fairies, lest they find out. Sometimes I wish they would.

And... oh I'll have to explain fallen fairies.

Urhm... I'm a fallen fairy, just... well I was supposed to share their fate. I've been told we're "spacy, like we aren't fully here" and that we're "filth" etc. etc. I - the four pixies don't let me meet the other fallen fairies, so I don't know if they mischaracterized them or not. (I often go to a wispy small dream where they live, since Floa has made a lot of enemies. It's our haven within the Land of the Fallen Fairies)

But they were right about me, that I'm sure of. I should've had the same ending as the others, where Kamari would take us away, never to be seen again.

At least... not by the dryads. (wow, look, transition. I'm great at prose. For sure. /sarcasm)

Pixies and dryads are in some sort of conflict... Bloom explained it to me once... ah plot holes. I'll ask faer about it, remind me please. (I will forget the moment the next sentence is spoken)

The basic motivation - at least from my character profiling - for letting the mental/ metaphysical fallen fairies have their own haven is because of spite... I think, don't quote me on that.

The pixies may have their narrative as something like - "They got rid of the brightest fairies"

Oh <3 It's like a huge redemption arc but not really based on the shifting narrative of different societies. They were villains for the dyads, helpful side characters for the pixies....

And my purpose is to destroy both of them. I've tried to fix myself. I've tried. Everything I do only makes it worse.
