So! It was one of the pieces on one of those sketchdumps I just reblogged, so here’s the sum-up of the new scandal au:
Zim is Tallest, Dib is an irken scientist. They ‘grew up’ together but Zim shot up and forgot about Dib because- well, his memory’s canonically pretty garbage and besides he often misremembers things anyway. Dib is hauled in front of him for causing problems at the labs like letting the specimens free because he hates his coworkers, and they just kept shoving him at successively more important people because he managed to keep slipping away before being fully punished and it ends up getting all the way to the Tallest.
Dib gets pissy at Zim because he’s expecting to get thrown out the airlock or whatever, before realizing just how terrible of an idea that is and that Zim could do something a lot worse. Mostly he’s just mad that Zim left him behind, but Zim, who only has faint inklings of Dib being familiar, decides to keep him around on basically a whim.
Things evolve from there, with Zim doting over his new ‘toy’ who treats him like an equal (which he didn’t realize he wanted, because duh, he’s the Tallest, why would he want to be anything other than shallowly worshipped?) while Dib has to walk the VERY careful tightrope of staying alive by not pissing Zim off while also not rolling over completely and betraying himself. (And that might lose Zim’s interest as well.) Things get even messier when oops, there’s eggs now.
I made a quick ficlet for it, under the cut.
"My Tallest!" Zim turned at the drone's voice.
"What? What is it?"
"We have a prisoner for you!"
"Isn't that what the prisons are for?" Zim crossed his arms, and two guards held up a squirming scientist. He had a lab coat that was frayed and muddied at the ends, and antennae that were perched at high attention, even as his eyes narrowed behind goggles so thick they had to be corrective.
"Not this one. He's managed to cause chaos in three different labs, letting loose alien animals to get his way. He was scheduled to be processed, but he managed to escape and insisted that he was useful. His management said they'd send him to you in hopes you'd at least find killing him amusing."
"Let go of me, you Pak-bleached troglodytes! I was just showing those short-sighted-" His eyes traveled up Zim's armor. "Oh. Uh-"
"And what's his name?" Zim tilted his head. Something about that voice was so familiar.
"Er..." The first guard looked to the others, so the scientist spoke up.
"Dib. It's Dib, Zim."
"You dare refer to your Tallest so casually?" The guard gasped, shocking him and getting a yelp. Zim held out a hand, and the guards passed Dib over. Zim lifted him up by the collar of his uniform, grinning as Dib squirmed, eyes wide and a snarl on his lips.
"Let go of me! If you hadn't ended up Tallest, we could have-"
Zim set a hand on his mouth, and he fell quiet, trembling slightly. With rage or fear, Zim wasn't sure.
"Leave him to me."
