I BEEN THINKING

I would once again like to convert the fandom’s spelling through use of this compelling presentation:

Tumblr stop blurring the truth

Anyways, a swan dive into the Four Classic Novels, which are among the world’s oldest and longest fictional works and a staple of Chinese literature ~ as I elegantly draw connections circling back to one of AtLA’s many, many background characters.

No, more likely you’re about to belly flop into incoherent jibber-jabber.

General Xu is said to have been Zhao’s superior at the time he discovered Wan Shi Tong’s library and stole the moon/ocean scroll. That’s it. That’s all we know 😔

But no fear! For I have stumbled across the famous character Xú Níng from the third of Four Classic Novels, Water Margin (translated from Shui Hu Zhuan), written by Shi Naian or his pupil Luo Guanzhong. And man, he’s a piece of work.

An upstanding, military-orientated fellow (which is good for purposes of sketching out General Xu’s persona in his image), Níng is an expert of the unique Chinese spear, attributed to his entire character and role in the story, as his nickname is literally the “Gold Lancer”... which slaps.

Qiang’d to make your acquaintance

He’s the 18th of the 108 Stars of Destiny, brutally simplified as a Taoist myth separating the first 36 stars into the Heavenly Spirits (honor roll), found within the Big Dipper and centered in the sky, while the other 72 are Earthly Fiends (getting coal for Christmas), scattered around true north. Níng at lucky number 18 is the Guardian Star. (This concept in Taoism leads us to believe our destinies correspond with the stars - which is, just, super cool to me. Are you a Libra? No, plebeian, I’m Huyan “Double Clubs” Zhuo. Seriously, Bing him.)

These 108 are the main focus of Water Margin: the tale of every last star released from prison, reborn as 108 heroes. They join together at what’s known as the “Grand Assembly” and continue to fight injustice, beating the Avengers over 500 years to the punch. (Go, kings, go!)

Sounds suspiciously White Lotus-y to me... but hold your komodo rhinos! Xú Níng is a trickier case. His “honorable” roots began before amnesty from the Song emperor, when he banded with outlaws. And before the 108 Stars of Destiny resurfaced as noble heroes, they were imprisoned by Shangdi for a reason: being, uh, demonic overlords.

And this is why I gravitated towards this famous fictional Xú: Shi Naian’s use of messy heroes with messy pasts, parts heavenly warriors and parts Team Jacob (eugh), as the synthesis of the anti-hero, and the embodiment of the Yin Yang.

Zhao’s history with poking at the dual spirits? Oh yeah. It’s all coming together.

So, similar to the other 107, Níng is complex. Song Jiang, leader of the 108 Stars of Destiny himself, kills his concubine in anger and escapes any consequence, a bullheaded mentality that the rest of the stars are said to echo. Etcetera.

So, Avatar the Last Airbender’s once-mentioned General Xu?

If we lean on parallels, like real men do, there’s a lot of material to work with here. It’s unclear how the backwards ranking system of the Fire Army pans out, but seeing as Zhao pursues a naval career, serving under a general (the naval equivalent being an admiral, I’m sure) seems to precede serving under Admiral Jeong Jeong. This would mean Xu was first to leave a significant impression on the bastard boy, emphasis on enlisting as boy, switching to the navy as bastard.

*Does a gay little dance that pisses you off*

General Xu could have been the ambitious type, obsessed with leaving a mark of historical value. Clean-cut conclusion, circles back nicely, pat on the back... but VANILLA.

Why not go all the way and theorize he’s somewhat non-human, desperate to translate mortality into immortality by means of securing a legacy as he wanders in search of the 107 stars, his home in the heavens? Obsession with fame, underpinned by the ever-so-subtle paranoia of being forgotten, slaved away like the 41st Division, seems to be Zhao’s thing. Did he pick it up from a celestial Xu without knowing? Does this inextricably relate to Xu’s name having to do with the “brilliant sun”, the closest star in our sky - and/or its symbolism with the moon? Is it three in the morning right now and I shouldn’t be doing this? It’s up in the air!

Also consider: if Xú Níng’s title is the Guardian Star, had the general passed away in the heat of battle, would he watch over Zhao in the remaining phases of his life... disappearing in the few minutes when the moon is struck out, too late to save him by the time the stars slowly flicker back after Yue ascends?

Did Xu use lances a lot (now read that five times fast); was he a damn pro at spear-wielding? Was he fun to prank, easy to trick? Does he have a questionable history in the underground before duty called? According to sources, Xú Níng is around six and half feet, sporting a dark beard and “ample waistline”. Shall this apply to our Xu as well?!

Yes, to all of the above. Tune in as this custom character development progresses - I specialize in parallels. AtLA could use more plus-size representation while we’re at it! I want more of my friend-maybe-spirit-shaped, lance-sporting, inclined-to-fathering-Zhao general who always has an eye on the stars. Someone who intends to reach their height again, and sends his trusted second in command to retrieve the moon scroll in hopes of establishing some connection. The golden lancer... the enigmatic Xu.

BIOGRAPHY.

Tomoya was born and raised in the countryside with lots of friends and lots of nature surrounding him. He always loved the read mangas and daydream a lot about having some adventures outside of his hometown. When he became a teenager he discovered his love for music and started playing the drums. Later he joined a band, but since things didn’t go well for them he decided to take a different path. Since his passion for music was burning strongly inside of him he became a teacher, sharing his technique for playing the drums. And for a while he was happy with his life, till the wish to be a part of band again became stronger.

Over some friends in his school he heard about a young band in Tokyo that was looking for a new drummer and he decided to take this opportunity. Tomoya called their leader and then traveled into the big city to show the band what he got. Once he arrived in Tokyo he was in awe since it was his first time there. They audition went well for him and he happily agreed to help them out for the time being. After that he went out to celebrate with them, finding out that living in the city was far more expensive than living in the countryside.

During the time he worked with the band they started to become friends and after a little while he was asked to join them officially. He said yes and over the years the band felt like a second family to him. And even though he is the oldest of them he can be just as childish as his bandmates. Taka and Toru are often bullying him, but he learned to live with it, knowing they appreciate him. He still loves reading mangas and other books if he feels the need to be by himself, away from the loud and busy life.

Tomoya loves to keep himself fit and trains several times a week and also playing golf whenever he gets the chance. Food is one of his passions, ramen being his favourite food. He always is cheerful and his happy smile is loved by the fans. He never was afraid to show his weird side, having his own clothing style since the beginning. The drummer always stays true to himself and he is the sunshine in the circle of his friends. He is always ready and willing to give his best and chase after his dreams. He will always do his best for the band and try to pay back their fans for their support by giving them a great show to remember.

Sometimes he can be a bit shy especially if he is with someone he likes. But he quickly warms up to people and he is fun to be around. If he hasn’t a phase in which he needs peace and quiet he is always open for some action. Tomoya loves playing games and can get really competitive, being especially good in sports games. He is an overall cutie which you should really get to know.

About 2nd verse

About two years ago Tomoya met a girl named Kaori. They got along pretty well and about three months of knowing each other they started dating. At the beginning of 2017 his girlfriend was telling him she was pregant with their first child.

They were both really excited excited and on the 5th November 2017 little Tomoaki came into this world. It was love at first sight for Tomoya and Kaori seemed happy as well.

Three months after their son was born Tomoya asked Kaori to marry him, but she declined. She had fallen in love with another man. They broke up and she followed her new boyfriend to America to live with him there.

It was decided that baby tomato would stay with his dad since Kaori was already having a second child. Tomoya is lucky that his friends and family support him. And should his son ever ask about his mom he would give her her number.

HAIR: deep black and cut short, the sides and back of his head shaved into an undercut. one long patch is left at the front, a forelock that hangs down over his forehead, reaching down just shy of his eyes. while this forelock used to be the same black as the rest of his hair, it’s now white, the colour lost under the severe stress he faced in Galra captivity. EYES : a dark grey in colour, sometimes looking from a distance to be a deep brown or black. long eyelashes. FACE : strong, sharp jawline, high cheekbones, long and straight nose, thick eyebrows. A1 : uhhh i mean, since he’s a very main character, i get quite a bit of what i want from canon ngl. buuuut i’d love some full backstory of his life prior to kerberos, plus everything that happened while the galra had him prisoner. Q2 : what would their soundtrack / score sound like ? A2 : oh god, idk. music with deep, heavy lyrics, but ultimately with optimistic messages? Q3 : why did you start writing this character ? A3 : okay so i’m a big red vs. blue fan, and i was seeing all kinds of people talking on tumblr about how shiro is so much like wash, who happens to be my favourite character and my biggest, oldest muse. finally caved and watch voltron, and… shiro ticks like, all of my boxes for a favourite character + character i can relate to on some levels. he’s complex, he’s broken, he struggles a lot internally but holds it together and helps others, he’s team dad, he’s self-sacrificing… i could go on, i really could. BIOGRAPHY.

Ryota was born and raised in Osaka with big sisters only he was a pretty spoiled child. His sisters love him to pieces and they have a close bond resulting in one of his sister visiting a rehearsal while being pregnant. Being the only boy in the family he is good with woman and always treats them nicely. Since he always loved being active it wasn’t a surprise as he joined the group HEADS doing the most dancing there. He loved standing on stage and his answers in interviews showed his goofy side. During those years in the band he became best friends with Toru, who went to the same school.

After the disbanding he focused on school while feeling there was something missing in his life. One night he and Toru sat on a roof and the older told him about his dream to form his own band. Ryota was immediately encouraging him to chase his dream and he even agreed to learn to play the bass so he could join the band. During the start of their band they lived in a dorm together, but it took Ryota a while to get used to live on his own relying on his friend a lot.

The formed band had its up and downs and even though he didn’t like Taka at first as he joined ONE OK ROCK, he and the other bandmate became close friends. The band felt like family to him even though he was always most loyal to their leader since he was his oldest friend. He constantly works on improving his bassist skills as well as learning new instruments. Ryota has often a smile on his lips and thanks to his comments a lot of Taka’s interviews become more fun especially the ones in English.

He is also the only bandmember that doesn’t tease Tomoya, often spending time with the other since they share interests like playing golf. Next to music he also loves his dog Betty which he treats like his child and the dog loves him back just as much. Ryota is a child at heart and can come off as hyperactive sometimes. Once he hits the stage he hardly stands still, giving the concert it’s all every time. He is a bit shyer if it comes to meeting fans, liking to keep somewhat of a distance, while still being grateful for their support.

Ryota loves spending time with friends and he’s always up for a new adventure like deciding randomly to learn a back-flip or being the only one to jump in a pool on a cooler day. He lives life to the fullest, making friends easily and having a bond with them and joining them in their weirdness. He is supportive and makes others smile easily when he decides to smile. Their fans love how warm he is and that he is always the one to do something stupid which makes people laugh.

Since January 2017 he is happily married with Michelle, the woman of his dreams and he still tries to improve his English for her. And near the end of October 2017 their first daughter (Elladine) was born. And since he is a natural with kids he and his daughter share a strong bond. He will always protect his little family since they’re his whole world.

About two years ago Tomoya met a girl named Kaori. They got along pretty well and about three monts of knowing each other they started dating. At the beginning of 2017 his girlfriend was telling him she was pregant with their first child.

They were both really excited excited and on the 5th November 2017 little Tomoaki came into this wolrd. It was love at first sight for Tomoya and Kaori seemed happy as well.

It was decided that baby tomato woukd stay with his dad since Kaori was already having a second child. Tomoya is lucky that his friends and family support him. And should his son ever ask about his mom he would give her her number.
