i'm not really good at posts but i'd like to leave this in memory of Mi'kmaw elder and author Daniel Paul who passed away last month.
Tumblr media
his book We Were Not the Savages is an incredibly detailed, researched, and impactful book on Mi'kmaq history, pre- and post-european contact and to the present day, including his personal experiences at the Schubenacadie Indian day school. i really don't have the words to express how important he and this book have been but it's really something to check out.

Sorry to bother, but yesterday I was thinking about this: what if Silco had a girlfriend at some point who died during the battle, only to discover later she was pregnant with his child. So he decided to not have any other partner or a child for the rest of his life. And then Powder happened.
Anon, you're not a bother! (๑❛ω❛๑)♥
At first I thought you meant that the child survives, which I think would be *very bad* for Powder. Silco doesn't strike me as someone who has a lot of room for direct empathy, and with the "child" slot taken, I don't see him adopting more strays. [In canon. I could easily spin him as a serial kids adopter in AUs]
But upon re-reading (after my morning cup of coffee) I think you do mean the child died with her.
I personally think this would be way worse, actually. Silco would be (in my understanding of him), far more likely to drop Powder off in an orphanage or let someone else take her on.
I'm basing this solely on his "I get it now" talk at Vander's statue. "Is there anything so undoing as a daughter" > He seems to realise this quite late... But if he had lost a partner and a child, I think he'd be keenly aware that a daughter can be "undoing" and Silco post episode 3 doesn't strike me as someone who'd chose to willingly take on a weakness.
He could have spent years thinking of "what if" scenarios and how having a child would have changed his life. What they would have named that child, how he would have changed his plans, etc.
I also feel like this would make his hatred of Piltover extra personal, and probably make him even more dead set on his goals and less receptive to adopting a walking disaster like Powder.
In canon, Powder's adoption strikes me as rather impulsive and depending strongly on the setting and timing. If Silco had bumped into her at some other time or she hadn't gone with the sister angle or hugged him while Vander laid dead there... IDK if things would have gone the same way.
I'm also suspecting that he didn't exactly raise her as a daughter, despite how cute the image is and how many fics go that way.
If he'd fully adopted her, people wouldn't go around saying "Like a daughter" for example. It seems to me that he kept her around like a mini henchwoman, and got more and more involved until it was basically a technicality. They had years together, after all. But my point is that I think it's likely he took her on without immediately labeling her as "Daughter" and ended up developing feelings.
If he'd already experienced the grief of losing a child (even if one he never knew), would he not have much stronger feelings *against* risking this again?
---
Assuming you want him to immediately latch on to Powder and don't care for my canon reading of Silco, I think that his having lost a child to violence would lead him away from making Powder/Jinx into a henchwoman.
He'd take her in as his child and start really struggling over her interest for bombs and violence, because he would want her to be cozy, stay home, and be his little girl.
But Silco would know that kids in Zaun have to contribute some way, and learn their skills early and get to work. I feel like he'd probably keep her closer and push her to be invested in the politics and not the violence angle.
Jinx's trauma would get in the way of that a fair bit and IDK how Silco would deal with her destructive outbursts.
I'd like to think he'd encourage her to focus on science and not the technicalities (bombs, guns, etc) and reward her innovations (Make a shimmer suit blueprint! Design a safe sewer system! that sort of stuff).
It's also way more likely that this Silco would go and send Jinx to the Academy. The Zaun one, not the Piltover one... Though the Zaun university hasn't been established in the show.
This is what comes to mind at least!
