male fruit bats will allow females to snatch food right out of their mouths because the females will "repay" them with sex later. (or from a different angle, the females will offer themselves up to the males in exchange for food.)

you know how grief seeds are sometimes referred to as "food" in crimson resolve? yeah...

i don't think this directly applies to ranka's situation in canon (though the way she talks about it is a bit vague...), but it's relevant in the general sense that she traded her body (acting as a hitman/weapon for the bat) for "food". likewise, the bat shared her grief seeds with ranka because she knew she could get ranka to do dirty work for her in return. as fucked-up as it was, they both gained some sort of benefit from the agreement.
