Alvera was beginning to realize that she wasn't cis at the time and began doing things that her grandmother perceived as morally wrong. She never liked the twins, having disapproved of their parents career choices and then being stuck with their kids once they died. Alvera doing "unmasculine" things was a bigoted excuse for her to get rid of both of the kids. She knew that if she kicked Alvera out, Cain would follow.

Alvera wouldn't feel comfortable enough to really explore her gender identity again until she was fourteen.
