On March 21st 1859 The National Gallery of Scotland opened on The Mound in Edinburgh.
The observant of you out there will know that The National Galleries is my go to place for many of my the photographs I post here.
Nowadays The Nationnal Galleris of Scotland is the collective name given to four buildings the others are, Royal Scottish Academy Building which sits in front of the original building, The National Portrait Gallery at Queen Street, and The Gallery of Modern art at Belford Road.
To clarify the building that opened in 1859 is the one foreground in the fitst photo. The building was designed by William Henry Playfair and was completed in 1854 on land gifted by the City Council for the Board of Manufactures, an arm of the government at the time responsible for public works and improvements.
There are Ionic porticos on all four sides, but the grander are on the northern and southern aspects. Carefully hidden beneath is a subtle extension, built 1975-8, the windows of which can only just be seen from Waverley Bridge and incorporates Scotland's foremost collection of paintings, drawings and prints from the early Renaissance to the late 19th Century.
Importantly the gallery includes the national collection of Scottish works by artists Allan Ramsay , Henry Raeburn, David Wilkie and William McTaggart .
There is also the best collection of English and European masters outside London, including Constable, El Greco, Poussin, Raphael, Rembrandt, Reynolds, Rubens, Titian, Turner, van Dyck, Velazquez, Vermeer and the impressionists.
I love the fact that the entrance is to the galleries free, although occasionally special exhibitions do incur and an entrance fee. Thebuilding that opened on this day has only just completed a major refurb, with an excellent extra floor beeing added.

Trash overflowed from bins on the streets of Edinburgh on Tuesday as a strike by council workers hit the city during its internationally renowned arts festival.
Tens of thousands of performers and tourists have poured into Scotland's capital for the festival, which runs through most of August.
But many have spoken at their revulsion at the stench as bins overflowed around the city[...]
"I'm from London and we've seen some quite bad protests and bad riots but this is up there," street performer James Tofalli, who was picking up litter outside Waverley train station, told AFP.
"I've not performed today. Not performed yesterday and for a few days because it's not a nice place to play."
Jenna Rank, an Australian tourist, said she had been excited to show "beautiful Edinburgh" to her partner, with the festival running in full for the first time since 2019 before coronavirus struck.
But she said she was left deeply disappointed after encountering an overpowering stench. [...]
"It was quite breath-taking and not just the smell. For some people it's their first time. It's a shame to leave that kind of impression."
Ian Tomlinson, who was born in Edinburgh, said he had never seen the city this bad, as fears grew about a surge in the population of rats and other pests.
"This is embarrassing. I am actually embarrassed to walk around the city at the moment and see so much junk," he said.
Cleaning staff working for Edinburgh City Council went on a 12-day strike last Thursday after rejecting a 3.0 percent pay offer which it called "derisory" in the current economic climate.
UK inflation is currently at 40-year highs of 10.1 percent on the back of soaring energy costs, and is predicted to hit 13 percent or even higher next year.[...] Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the strike action came while Edinburgh was at the "centre of the cultural world" and rejected claims of a lack of government funding for local councils.
Local residents have been asked to keep their rubbish inside rather than put it on the street. Waste and recycling centres are also shut.
Miles Briggs, a local government spokesman for the opposition Scottish Conservatives, said the rubbish piling up on our streets risked damaging the city's reputation.
"These annual festivals are supposed to be a source of pride, not humiliation," he said.
lol get fucked pay the binman better. Any pay rise less than inflation is a pay cut

The Next Ten Days for the British public
Flags across the royal residences, Whitehall and other government buildings will be lowered to half-mast. Government websites also change to show a black banner.
The prime minister is the first member of government to make a statement.
Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral will toll their bells at midday.
Ceremonial gun salutes are expected at Hyde Park and at Tower Hill, and a national minute’s silence will be held.
King Charles will conduct his first audience with the prime minister. He will also meet with the Earl Marshall to officially sign off on the full funeral plans, with some details of the state funeral, expected to be held in 10 days’ time. Charles will deliver a broadcast to the nation and the Commonwealth this evening.
D-Day+1
The Accession Council, which includes senior government figures and privy counsellors, will meet at St James’s Palace at 10am for the principal proclamation of the new king, which is read out in public from a balcony at St James’s Palace.
Tributes will be paid in parliament. Flags will be at full mast for the Accession Council, and remain at full mast for 24 hours before returning to half-mast again until the day after the funeral.
D-Day+2
The coffin leaves from Balmoral to be taken by road to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
There will be proclamations in the devolved nations at Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast simultaneously at midday. Tributes in parliament are likely to continue.
D-Day+ 3
There is a ceremonial procession from Holyrood along the Royal Mile to St Giles’ Cathedral for a service attended by members of the royal family. After that service, St Giles’s Cathedral then opens to the public for 24 hours for a period of lying at rest, not lying-in-state because that takes place in London.
Under London Bridge plans King Charles was expected to travel to the Palace of Westminster to receive a motion of condolence. He was then due to then fly to Edinburgh. In his first act as sovereign, he will attend the Palace of Holyroodhouse for the ceremony of the keys, followed by a service at St Giles’ Cathedral. He will have his first audience with Scotland’s first minister, and will also receive a motion of condolence at the Scottish parliament.
D-Day+4
In late evening the coffin is expected to be moved to Edinburgh Waverley station where it will then travel on the Royal Train overnight, arriving at St Pancras station in London the following morning.
King Charles flies to Northern Ireland where he is due to receive a message of condolence at Hillsborough Castle and will attend St Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast for a service of prayer and reflection on the life of Queen Elizabeth II.
D-Day + 5
The coffin is expected to arrive at Buckingham Palace for a few hours before the big ceremonial planned in London on that day.
In the first big ceremonial event preceding the funeral, the late Queen’s coffin will be borne from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall for the beginning of five days lying-in-state. It is expected the coffin will be borne on a gun carriage. On arrival, there will be a short service.
The lying-in-state is an opportunity for the public to pay its respects. The coffin will be mounted on a catafalque in the middle of Westminster Hall, which will be open to the public for 23 hours per day.
D-Day+6
The lying-in-state continues.
D-Day+7
King Charles will travel to Wales to attend a service at Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff, then will visit the Welsh Senedd and receive a motion of condolence. He will have an audience with the Welsh first minister.
Commonwealth detachments will begin arriving in London.
D-Day+8
King Charles is expected to receive governors general and prime ministers from the realms.
D-Day+9
On the eve of the funeral, Charles will welcome foreign royal families attending the funeral. VIP overseas guests are expected to attend the lying-in-state.
D-Day+10
The state funeral will be held at Westminster Abbey. The coffin will be borne from Westminster Hall in a procession to the abbey. There will be two minutes’ silence across the nation. After the one-hour service, a large ceremonial procession will accompany the coffin to Hyde Park, where it will be transferred from gun carriage to state hearse and travel to Windsor. Following a procession through Windsor, a committal service will be held at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, during which the coffin will be lowered into the royal vault.

I would like to respectfully ask people to STOP speculating that the Queen has already died. This is not only unhelpful, it is incredibly disrespectful.
Only BBC One has suspended all regular broadcasting to provide coverage of the current situation. Other BBC channels and UK broadcasters are showing their regular programmes. If the Queen had passed away, ALL channels would have suspended their regular shows.
For those of you not aware of what will happen when she does pass away, Operation London Bridge will come into force: in the hours after her death, a “call cascade” occurs will take place informing the prime minister, the cabinet secretary (Britain’s highest-ranking civil servant) and a number of the most senior ministers and officials. The PM will be informed by the Queen’s private secretary, who will also tell the Privy Council Office, which coordinates government work on behalf of Her Majesty.
As Queen Elizabeth is resident in Balmoral, and given Buckingham Palace has seen fit to release a statement regarding the situation we know it is serious, Operation Unicorn will come into play. This means Her Majesty's body would lie in state at Holyroodhouse Palace and her coffin would then be taken to St Giles’ Cathedral on the Royal Mile. Her body will then be placed on the Royal Train at Waverley Station and commence the journey down the east coast mainline to its London destination.
The Royal Household will issue an official notification delivering the news to the public.
Ministers and senior civil servants will receive an email from the cabinet secretary, advising them of the death of Her Majesty The Queen.
Flags across Whitehall will be lowered to half-mast. The aim is for this to be done within 10 minutes.
The U.K. parliament and the devolved legislatures in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will adjourn. If parliament is not sitting, it will be recalled.
In a sign of the times, many of the immediate plans relate to social media. The Royal Family’s website will change to a black holding page with a short statement confirming the queen’s death. The U.K. government website — GOV.UK — will display a black banner at the top.
Unless and until any of these things happen, everything is speculative.

Dunoon Pier by FotoFling Scotland Via Flickr: Dunoon's Victorian pier was first built in 1835; it was extended to the current structure in 1895. The pier was shortened to allow the building of a breakwater in 2005, just to the south of the pier. As well as protecting the Victorian pier and its architecture from storm surges, a new link span was installed alongside the breakwater. This was to allow the berthing and loading of roll-on/roll-off ferries instead of the side-loading ferries that used to serve the pier. A tender to serve the new link-span between two interested parties, Caledonian MacBrayne and Western Ferries, came to nothing. Prior to June 2011, the pier was in daily use by Caledonian MacBrayne, who ran a regular foot passenger and car-ferry service to Gourock. However, after June 2011, a renewed tendering process produced a passenger-only ferry service (Argyll Ferries, owned by Caledonian MacBrayne) using the breakwater for berthing. On 1 September 2004, during the construction of the breakwater, the cargo vessel Jackie Moon ran aground on the breakwater, with six people on board. Since the breakwater became operational in June 2011, Argyll Ferries operate from this docking facility. The Waverley struck the breakwater on 26 June 2009, with some 700 people on board. The Victorian pier was partially refurbished by Argyll and Bute Council during 2015. Now containing meeting rooms, the pier is purely a tourist attraction. [Wikipedia] Not much progress seems to have been made in restoration and the property is currently on the Buildings at Risk Register

Vigil for the Bondi Junction Tragedy this Sunday
Tumblr media
On Sunday 21 April at 5.30pm, there will be a Community Candlelight Vigil at Bondi Beach in Dolphin Court on the South side of the Bondi Pavilion.   During the vigil, community members are invited to light candles and hold a minute’s silence to honour the victims and survivors in the wake of the Bondi Junction tragedy.   Organisers say the vigil will be an important moment for the local community to comfort each other and reflect.
They are asking the public to bring a candle with them and to take it home with them at the end of the vigil.   Mental health support will be available during the vigil and people are encouraged to take public transport to and from the vigil.   Organisers recognise that people may wish to bring flowers to the event but they kindly ask that you lay any floral tributes at the official site at Oxford Street Mall.   “The past few days have been some of the most difficult ever for our community, and I know many of us are still coming to terms with what happened,” said local federal Member for Wentworth, Allegra Spender.   “Our thoughts remain with the victims, their families, and all of those who witnessed or have been affected by Saturday’s horrific attacks.    “Sunday’s vigil will be an important opportunity for the community to come together, comfort each other, and reflect.   “Whilst there is shock and devastation in the community at this senseless act of violence, the courageous and compassionate spirit of our community has also shone through.   “There was one person who was trying to do enormous harm on Saturday. But there were hundreds of people who were doing all they could to look after each other and keep each other safe.   “We are a community that comes together and cares for each other, and never has that been more evident than in the past few days.   “I want to place on record my thanks to the NSW Government, Waverley Council, and the local state members of parliament for the work they have done to support the community at this time.”
