It then suffered a major decline as people moved further south and traffic became an issue. It has revived somewhat in recent years and is now a fairly nice suburb.

Haven't gone back to the Forbidden West yet. May save that until there's less sunlight - either because more cloud cover (which is on the way) or because night-time approaches (which is going to be awhile because it gets dark late here once you get past, like, mid-April). Or at least until I get bored with waiting and close the drapes so that the sun glare off my monitor doesn't mess with my gaming. But the last couple of hours have been at once really nice and rather painful. Because, again, fibromyalgia sucks. So: the problems and small joys of my afternoon.

I went out on Friday for some bits and pieces and noticed that the big Tesco had a massive sale on these Itsu-brand cup-o-noodles things that are made from rice noodle instead of wheat noodle? So I can eat them and not get glutened? So I had that to look forward to already.

Just as I was boiling the water, doorbell goes - it's my mother with the promised treats from North America. She'd asked me if I needed maple syrup or anything, but I'm pretty good for that at the moment but I did ask for more A1 sauce (because nowhere in this benighted country sells it) and some Sour Patch Kids - the one remaining sweet from my childhood that I still really enjoy and can actually eat (Coffee Crisp bars would be up there, but ... again, wafer biscuit, gluten, *sob*). So she comes upstairs with my good-sized bottle of A1 sauce and a bag of Sour Patch Kids the size of my head. Apparently her and her best friend Michelle (who I've known since I was a kid - she's kind of an honorary aunt - so I have two Aunt Michelles, but the blood-related one goes by Mickey) discussed getting the watermelon ones or these lemon ones I hadn't even heard of, but Mum knows I'm a bit of a traditionalist about that stuff and I'd want the ones I've always liked. And then they both saw the huge honking bag of Sour Patch Kids and said, "THAT'S THE ONE" so I have Sour Patch Kids for awhile.

(For those of you who follow me and also live in the UK: yes, I know you have those here too. It's just that the consistency of both the gummy and the sugar is wrong and you have blackcurrant instead of blue raspberry and strawberry instead of cherry and they're fine for what they are but I want the ones I liked when I was eight. In a shop where I don't have to spend £3 on a dinky 50g bag.)

Anyway, I settled down, had my rice noodles, and got a fairly pleasant surprise in that my grocery delivery arrived a little earlier than I had anticipated. Minor issue in a couple of substitutions and the complete absence of my coffee. Buuuuuut I had designs on going out tomorrow anyway and I've got enough to get me by. But I have all the fixings of glorious dinners and various savoury snacks and fruit. Honestly, it's the fruit that feels most like the splurge these days. But I require vitamins even if I take the multivitamin tablets and if I'm going to snack on fruit, it has to be fruit I will like. I have a mango of just the right degree of ripeness, some Pink Lady apples, some clementines, and some green grapes. Omnom.

Going to let it be a relatively easy day today, though. Corner shop, fairly simple dinner, video games. I need to save up some spoons for the eventual charge out to actual shops tomorrow. Like, ones that sell things like clothes. Sometimes you just need more trousers.

You may be old and overly domesticated when you find yourself immoderately excited over finally getting another large grocery delivery. 🥴 And a pretty big one, by recent standards.

This time, from a new place: Willys! Haven't managed to try them in person yet, since there aren't any locations really convenient by public transport. But, the prices and selection did look pretty good.

Some ongoing weird disability-related food insecurity issues probably help too, yeah. Along with going so long without local bank accounts/BankID to make basic stuff like buying food myself much easier. I've mostly been relying on Mr. C to buy groceries, which has been less than ideal in multiple ways.

But yeah, we were starting to run pretty low on some basic staples, and there were some things that I specifically had a taste for. (Including more seasonal vegetables and some hopefully decent cooking apples!) And now we have most of that.

I even have a decent-looking chuck roast to work with (högrev here)--which was trickier to find than you might expect in the UK! Some other cuts decent for similar uses, but not what I would call chuck. Our usual grocery store nearby has an awesome-looking meat counter, and there's also a halal butcher shop that stays pretty busy in the same shopping center. Now that I can mostly reliably eat a better variety of stuff, I keep wanting to check both of those out more. But, for now? Some packaged högrev bought sight unseen is pretty damned welcome!

Tentative plans over the next few days, spoon supply allowing:

* For tonight: some easy sauerkraut and weenies, with mashed potatoes. I like to fry a chopped onion in with the sausage pieces, also season with some pepper, and let it all simmer covered for a while like for regular cooked kraut.

* Mix up some basic bulk pseudo-sausage with a pack of ground pork, to let sit a day or two before hopefully turning out some biscuits and gravy! 😋 (Not the exact seasoning blend I tend to throw in, and no need for any sugar IMO. But, the same general style. I don't think I've ever tried a recipe from Homesick Texan that I didn't enjoy, though!)

* Beef stew with cornbread! And probably freeze the other half of that chuck roast.

* Do something with most of those apples. Possibly apple crisp, because that's both easy and good. We should also have everything for that, besides some ice cream to go along with it.

We also have some turnips, which I'm glad are much easier to get hold of here. (Though I really want the greens too!) Will probably use some in that stew, but still not sure what I want to do with other few.

Ok so long rant on grocery store prices. In short, there are legitimate and less than legitimate reasons for equitable sale prices on pork, and it’s not because Liz Truss is now the UK PM and opened new pork markets. I could go on and on, but I’ll keep it to a readable rant.

1) Legitimate: often if an item is on sale with multiple retailers, there is a glut or oversupply in the market. For pork, this time of year makes sense, along with other fresh meats: anything not slaughtered and sold has to bed fed through winter, most likely, so those who raise livestock are evaluating the value of feeding an animal through winter for increased size, more offspring, etc, or slaughter now. Ranchers for cows, for example, don’t often own their land and have to lease rights to land, water, transport, even the slaughterhouse trip. So, for many animals, it’s the end of the line right about now. (I recognize that “extra” meat or produce or even off-season food doesn’t go to waste, it is frozen, canned, salted into lunch meat, etc., but fresh and prime is much more profitable.) This is also why McDonald’s only has the McRib randomly seasonally: they tend to introduce it when pork prices had hit a low point. (They also do it to increase demand when the price point is right, for something that is likely not profitable at more long-term pork prices and consistent menu availability.).

2) Semi-Legitimate: Many commodities, including pork, grains, produce, much like oil, are traded on the public market much like stocks, including futures markets, where a certain amount is guaranteed for delivery at a certain time for a certain price. While this can stabilize markets and prevent wild fluctuations, traders only seeking profit mean this is often not reality. But, it also means that for many of those producers, packagers, buyers, and grocers, they are receiving meat at around the same time for around the same commodity price.

3) Legitimate: Grocery stores compete just like gas stations and other “comparative product” stores. That is, when there are two or more places selling nearly identical products (a gallon of gas, a slab of pork, a 32” tv, etc.), generally price wins out. Yeah, there may be certain features for a certain tv, or organically fed pigs, or even brand loyalty discounts for gas, but most people will buy what is cheapest. So grocery stores will try to beat competitors or at least match them.

4) Less legitimate: speaking of which, when there are fewer corporations that own all the grocery stores in an area, which is accurate for many Americans, it is easier to match or beat competitors. Think of a race: it’s easier to beat 2 or 3 other racers on a given day than it is to beat 10 or 20. It’s also easier to make a popular item a “loss-leader”: selling something below cost to bring in customers who will hopefully buy other stuff to make up the difference and boost sales and profits. Grocery stores in particular have already low margins and a product that literally spoils, especially fresh items. So more foot traffic, even at a smaller profit or loss for one item, is often better for the bottom line.

But, the fewer competitors, the overall higher prices and the opportunity for collusion, and the greater opportunity for a behemoth to loss-lead to drive out competitors and then raise prices or swallow the market whole (see Walmart, Amazon, etc.).

5) Bad: Meat production in America is a horrendous industry: for the environment, for animal welfare, for worker safety, for consumers’ health, and because a few conglomerates own essential pieces of the industry. Ever wonder why when there’s a big recall of food, it often affects many stores’ private label or store brands and the name brands? It’s because not only are corners cut and shoddy practices that harm everybody but the dividends of the shareholders, meaning of course there’s going to be a recall at some point, but it’s because often one true no-name producer makes products for dozens of companies. So when that no-name producer messes up, everybody whose broccoli or whatever comes through their plant is affected.

Another occurrence is that big meat producers lock in private contracts with middle and small size farms to produce for them. So even if there are hundreds of pig farms in America, they only sell to 3 or 4 major distribution companies. Think Tyson — they don’t own all the farms or chickens. They just lock in contracts to buy and then package and ship. They can better control costs on the back end, lessen liability, and control market price on the front end — all of which boost profit and reduce asset risks. And it’s not making the product better: it’s just raising prices, eliminating choice, and lowering wages and safety (remember the managers betting on how many of their meat packers and factory butchers would die from COVID in the first months of the pandemic?).

What does this have to do with that grocery sale? They all likely have the same meat supplier. That Tyson will gobble up a huge chunk of the pig market, have the pigs packaged up at one of their handful of plants, and then sell to regional grocery stores. So…that means the grocery stores are doing the same math and arriving at the same sales. Hell, the meat producer may have even convinced them to buy more for a special, unique discount!…that they gave to all three grocery companies.

Even if it isn’t a name brand being slapped on, it’s likely coming from one of the same conglomerates, or a profit-sucking private equity backed producer…who may also own major shares of similar producers in the same market.

Even if there are different meat producers, with so few players in the game, it’s easy to price fix.

6) Bad: Price fixing. Many oligopolies have been caught doing this on true paper, in practice, or informally. Chocolate was (and likely still is) a big one. Just google chocolate price fixing. Meat is not unique here, and both grocery companies and meat companies could price fix a number of ways. Because bottom line they know a price war only hurts them. Why undercut when you can choose not to compete on certain goods? It’s startlingly easy. Companies signal pricing all the time: in press releases (remember all the big companies announcing price increases due to inflation over the last year and a half?), in weekly ads, in market-related releases and required public shareholder reports, etc. It’s easy to *wink wink nudge nudge* competitors with the right language that says you’re willing to cooperate. Even without a direct agreement, all it takes is for one company to raise (or lower) prices and see if their competitor walks in step after them. That’s a signal: “Sure, that sounds good to us!” is what that says.

7) Not necessarily bad but gross: Some products are discounted at key parts of the month when stores know customers’ SNAP benefits reload in order to convince them to spend their monthly budget at THEIR store. These stores know families in poverty often make one big trip when the benefits are loaded, spending the bulk of their food budget on staples and more fresh or luxury food purchases at this time, before they have to skimp toward the end of their monthly allotment. A good sale on a few key items, such as pork or cereal, can be enough to get $150-200 shopping bill from that family. Factor in #1-6, and it could just be that no store won the pork enticement this month. Of course, maybe that was by design all along…

How Can Companies Adapt to Eco-Friendly Trends?

The UK will soon ban the use of single-use plastics, which is not surprising given how much plastic ends up in our garbage and beaches. Consumers hate plastic that can only be used once, Instead, they prefer environmentally friendly containers over businesses that continue to pack food in them. Single-use plastics are not just extremely harmful to the environment. So, what are the best sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic?

Alternatives For Single-Use Plastic: When single-use plastic gets disposed of in garbage dumps, it can leak harmful chemicals into the environment and fail to biodegrade. It is important that you completely avoid using any single-use plastics in your packaging when using eco-friendly catering equipment.

Paper: Paper is a material that is very adaptable and may solve a lot of issues with single-use plastic. Paper straws are a great replacement for plastic straws since, as we all know, plastic straws cause a significant risk to marine life. They will not harm animals through their fast biodegradation.

In our grocery stores and food delivery, single-use plastic bags are common. They are quickly removed and end up in the garbage for hundreds or even thousands of years. Paper bags may, therefore, make a huge difference. These bags of paper make it easier to carry food, whether it's fruit and veggies or takeout, and they can be recycled. Bamboo: Bamboo is an excellent replacement for single-use plastic because, when it grows, it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere rather than causing it to increase in temperature. When it comes to takeaway meals, plastic cutlery is an important issue. Bamboo cutlery is a wonderful option that will not break down over time. A possible replacement for plastic coffee shakers that frequently follow takeaway coffee is simply to use bamboo straws. Bamboo is a great substitute for single-use plastic since it regenerates from its own roots without any need for replanting, making it an incredibly adaptable and renewable crop.

Products that are recyclable: Using recyclable materials in place of single-use plastic is an alternative choice. Reusable glasses are now widely available for parties and other occasions. They are safe (they will break) and can be washed and used repeatedly. Packaging made of glass and stainless steel is another example of recyclable goods. While these solid substances could be washed and reused in many ways, they are not biodegradable.

Sugarcane or Bagasse: A new sustainable material that can easily replace single-use plastics is sugarcane fiber. The tough substance that remains after crushing sugarcane stalks to release juice is referred to as sugarcane, or bagasse. When mixed with water, this residue can be converted into fiber rather than being thrown away. Therefore, biodegradable plastic bowls, trays, bags, cartons, and other items can be produced. While Bagasse is totally biodegradable, it's a great alternative to single-use plastic.

Wood: Like bamboo, wood can be used in a lot of places where single-use plastic is not acceptable. Single-use plastic is quickly being replaced by wooden cutlery because it looks luxurious and biodegrades. Because wood is easily recycled and reused, and because it absorbs CO2 as it grows, it is one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable materials. Applying wood also has the advantage of not harming the environment because any "waste" produced during the creation of wooden goods is 100% biodegradable.

What is the impact of moving to Eco-Friendly products? We have to do all in our power to fight the serious danger that single-use plastic presents to the environment, as it is a major cause of climate change. You can significantly reduce your company's carbon footprint by choosing to use recyclable packaging. Also, customers today are highly conscious of the environment and favor businesses that are decreasing their use of packaging and offering alternatives. This might strengthen your consumer base and improve the perception of your brand.

We will soon be able to replace single-use plastic with an abundance of sustainable alternatives, which will benefit the environment and increase corporate efficiency.

Thess vs Projects & Acquisitions

Well, today’s already been a pretty good day. I mean, I haven’t been awake for long, but ... y’know, that’s part of why it’s been a good day.

Since I had the day off, I had earlier-than-usual mini watch party of The Legend of Vox Machina. (I have thoughts. I’ll ramble about all that later.) Slept in. Woke up and did the online ordering portion of my big grocery shop. Which was good because some of the things I wanted and needed were on special offer - like, the good gluten-free bread, just for example. Also picked up a few ingredients for something I really wanted to try - see, I’m a little fed up at how expensive hot chocolate mix is, and the supermarket own-brand stuff is kind of crap, and I tripped over a video awhile ago about how to make your own. So I’m going to do that. Which meant I needed a couple of storage containers of the right size to store the finished product ... though I could just use the old jars, which I’ve saved. Hmm. Thoughts for later, but honestly, with everything I get up to, I could use storage jars. Also I needed to hit Amazon anyway because I needed a safer candy thermometer than the one I have if I’m going to be making hard candy. Even the steam from heating sugar to hard crack point can be seriously painful, and my candy thermometer requires leaning too close to the pot for my liking.

Anyway, after that, I fulfilled a promise to myself - a promise that this paycheque, on sale or not, I was going to get my Gilmore’s Glorious Bathrobe. It’s time to retire my old one, which looks like I skinned a polka-dotted Muppet to get it. It’s served me well, my old Muppet, but one of the pockets is ripped halfway off and it’s all battered. Best part is, it was still on sale - to the point where even when I sprang for DPD next-day delivery service, it was still cheaper than the base price would have been if I’d bought it while not on sale! Which means I should have it tomorrow! So I am of a squee. That’s even not taking into account that apparently my bestie is throwing the Trinket slippers at me as an early birthday gift.

Look, right now, with the way things are? Being able to stay warm without turning on the heating is a serious bonus. And ... well, the shark socks didn’t work out - they were cheap crap and the soles kept shifting in weird ways so they’re not really wearable - and my lovely super-thick fleece socks are great for warming up my feet when I’m curling up in bed for the night but they’re thick enough that I can’t throw a pair of shoes over them to step out onto the balcony. Thus, two pairs of moderately warm socks and slippers. I’ve been making do with thinner socks so I had my eye on more slippers anyway. I was just getting jazzed about the Trinket slippers hitting the UK shop and thinking I could buy slippers and robe at the same time, when all of a sudden, “I’m letting you know that I’m getting you the Trinket slippers, so you don’t go ahead and buy them first - happy early birthday”. My bestie knows me too well. ^_^

Right. It’s been a productive day but I’ve still got shit to do. Need to go out and pick up painkillers and at least some groceries (delivery’s tomorrow but food is still needed today). So not much shit to do, but some. Tomorrow’s going to be the day for Doing Things, though - fruit to run through the dehydrator, making my hot chocolate mix, and running D&D. And Sunday’s the big group session. Lots to prep for, but hey.
