The steel pan, also known as the steel drum, is an idiophone percussion instrument (surprisingly not a drum!) It originates in Trinidad and Tobago. The steel drum is played with two mallets. The mallets hit grooves in the pan, the sizes all made to a certain pitch. Steel pans are played in ensembles, reaching 4-100 players.
