Warnings: n/a
Characters involved: Chuuya Nakahara, mentions Dazai, Kunikida and port mafia members
Gender-neutral reader, you/yours
Chuuya had always dreaded the day he would swap bodies with his soulmate.
It wasn't that he hated the idea of being mated to someone, but just that he was scared.
Chuuya was scared of who his soulmate could be. Or rather, who it couldn't be.
Maybe that was why when he woke up in an unfamiliar room in clothes that definitely didn't belong to him Chuuya couldn't help but feel more annoyed than angry.
It was because even if he had tried to tell himself otherwise, he always had a feeling if it was going to be anyone it would be you.
You with your stupid silver tongue and sharp knives who was known for wreaking havoc throughout the port mafia just for shits and giggles.
You who had stolen his hat too many times to count just to force Chuuya to hunt you down and amuse you when you were bored.
You were the enemy, someone who, unlike Dazai, had always been against the port mafia. While you had no interest in being the reason for their demise, you didn't exactly agree with their morals either.
Perhaps that was why he found himself panicking so much as Chuuya jumped up from what he assumed was your bed and raced to change into the outfit he would often see you in.
As luck would have it, Chuuya had run into Dazai and his annoyingly perfect partner just as he raced out of your room.
Words could not describe his urge to strangle Dazai as the annoyingly tall detective tugged on his, well your, waist and led him to the office while dropping one round of flirts after the other.
Dazai had always known Chuuya liked you in ways that couldn't quite be explained, thus the fact that he used your workplace proximity to flirt with you was more than infuriating.
However, it was nothing compared to the anger he felt when the other male leaned down to whisper a confession into his ear.
"I know it's you Chuuya. Unlike you, my darling was insightful enough to text me from your phone this morning." His words infuriated the redhead to no end, so much so that he didn't even care about keeping up appearances in front of Kunikida as he stomped on Dazai's foot and angrily attempted to curse at him.
Thankfully, the people around you on the street had somehow misinterpreted the situation and taken Dazai for a pervert, causing the two detectives to be forced to explain themselves and allow Chuuya a quick getaway.
You might have been his soulmate, but Chuuya still didn't trust you enough to allow you to stroll around the port mafia in his body. Especially not when he knew you would exploit the situation for personal gain.
Oh how right he had been to rush to their base first thing in the morning.
It had only been mere hours since you swapped bodies, yet somehow you had caused enough havoc to have the executives running around in panic.
You had purchased one of the most expensive wine bottles to exist and then offered it to Elise who didn't hesitate to cuss out Mori once she was intoxicated and then ran around the base with her crayons while the older male sobbed.
Koyo had tried to contain the situation but miserably failed once you convinced Akutagawa that Dazai wanted him and the Black Lizard to take the day off.
You had somehow also gotten your hands on one of Kajii's lemon bombs and planted them in the closet Mori would use to store his ugly outfits for Elise, making Mori all but ready to murder Chuuya.
Or at least, he would have had the real Chuuya not gotten there in time.
The things you had done were certainly more playful than destructive, but repercussions were in order.
Your behaviour paired with Chuuya's public humiliation of the ADA had made the two groups come together to settle on an agreement; you both were to remain by each other's side until ou swapped back.
Chuuya didn't know if he loved or hated the idea.
On one hand, he could get to keep an eye on you and ensure you didn't embarrass him by trying to sing opera in front of their attack team again.
But on the other, he would have to be with you for the next week. He would eat, sleep, and do every other daily task with you by his side for the next seven days.
It was safe to say your time together had been chaotic, but it had somehow bonded the two of you enough to trust one another.
You had learned things about each other that years of your rivalry could never teach you. Things that were both embarrassing and pleasant.
After the two of you swapped back Chuuya found it increasingly hard for him to sleep on his own or have meals by himself, but he forced himself to deal with it just as you did.
Nothing actually changed. Dazai was still a flirty nuisance and Chuuya was a Tsundere through and through.
But there was now a bond between the two of you that everyone was forced to acknowledge. One that allowed him to try and strangle Dazai every time he played with your hair and whispered stupid jokes to you during mutual meetings.
One that allowed you to sneak into the port mafia and crawl into his room without Gin snitching on the days you were too tired and simply needed him to hold you till you fell asleep.
The two of you weren't officially together but in a way, you didn't have to be.
You were enemies who slept in the same bed, rivals who kissed the very lips you would swear at each other with during the day.
You were soulmates kept apart by circumstance, yet somehow, the two of you were fine with that.
