When embarking on a camper van adventure, safety, and security should always be top priorities. Whether you’re traveling solo or with loved ones, taking the necessary precautions can ensure a worry-free and enjoyable journey.
Vehicle Safety Measure
Regular Maintenance
Prioritize regular maintenance checks to keep your campervan in optimal condition. Pay attention to the engine, brakes, tires, and electrical systems. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule and address any issues promptly.
Safe Driving Practices
Practice safe driving habits, including adhering to speed limits, avoiding distractions, and maintaining a safe following distance. Be mindful of the van’s size and weight, particularly when maneuvering in tight spaces or adverse weather conditions.
Emergency Preparedness
Equip your van with essential emergency items such as a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, warning triangles, and a roadside assistance kit. Familiarize yourself with basic vehicle troubleshooting and learn how to change a tire.
Personal Safety Tips
Secure the Van
Invest in reliable locks for the doors and windows of your camper van. Consider installing an alarm system or GPS tracking device for added security. Park in well-lit areas and use designated RV parks or campgrounds whenever possible.
Stay Aware of the Surroundings
Be mindful of your surroundings, especially when parking overnight in unfamiliar areas. Trust your instincts and avoid isolated or sketchy locations. Interact with fellow campers and seek their advice on safe spots to park or explore.
Personal Protection
Carry personal protection items such as pepper spray or a personal alarm. While the majority of camping experiences are safe and enjoyable, having these items as a precautionary measure can provide peace of mind.
Fire Safety
Fire Prevention
Minimize fire risks by practicing proper fire safety measures. Install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your van. Avoid open flames inside the van and ensure all cooking appliances are used safely and monitored closely.
Fire Extinguishers
Keep a fire extinguisher easily accessible inside your camper van. Ensure that everyone on board knows how to use it. Regularly check the extinguisher’s pressure and expiration date.
Emergency Exit Plan
Establish an emergency exit plan in case of fire or other emergencies. Ensure that all passengers know how to quickly and safely exit the van. Practice the drill periodically to reinforce the procedure.
Personal Security
Digital Security
Protect your personal information by using secure Wi-Fi networks and encrypted connections when accessing sensitive information online. Be cautious about sharing your travel plans on social media, as it can potentially attract unwanted attention.
Valuables and Identification
Keep your valuables secure by using a safe or lockbox inside the van. Consider photocopying important identification documents and storing them separately from the originals.
Travel Insurance
Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers your camper van and personal belongings. Review the policy’s coverage for theft, accidents, and emergencies to ensure comprehensive protection.
Connectivity and Communication
Communication Devices
Carry reliable communication devices such as mobile phones, two-way radios, or satellite phones for remote areas. Ensure they are fully charged and have a backup power source.
Emergency Contacts
Have a list of emergency contacts readily available, including local authorities, roadside assistance services, and family or friends who can be reached in case of an emergency.
Offline Maps and GPS: Download offline maps or have a reliable GPS to navigate areas with limited or no internet connectivity. This ensures you can find your way even when traditional navigation methods fail.

Top 5 Features to Look for in a Small Portable Generator for Your Home or RV
Tumblr media
Are you someone who frequently travels in an RV, or do you live in an area that experiences frequent power outages? If so, investing in a small portable generator can provide you with peace of mind and convenience. However, with so many options on the market, it can be challenging to decide which generator is the right fit for your needs. Here are the top 5 features to look for in a small portable generator for your home or RV:
1. Power Output
The power output of a generator is measured in watts and determines how much power the generator can handle. When searching for a small portable generator, it's essential to consider how much power you'll need. This will depend on factors such as the size of your RV or home, the number of appliances you plan to power, and whether you'll be using it for emergency backup power or recreational purposes. Look for generators with a power output between 1,000 to 5,000 watts to cover most recreational and emergency needs.
2. Fuel Efficiency
Another crucial feature to consider when searching for a small portable generator is fuel efficiency. Portable generators typically run on either gasoline, propane, or diesel. Each fuel type has its benefits and drawbacks and can affect fuel efficiency. Selecting a model that's fuel-efficient will save you money in the long run and reduce environmental impact. Check for generators that have an eco-mode feature or are Energy-Star certified.
3. Noise Level
Noise can be a significant disadvantage of portable generators. Fortunately, manufacturers have developed new technologies to reduce generator noise levels. When choosing your small portable generator, look for models with sound-reducing features such as an enclosed case, low-Dba mechanical noise reduction, or mufflers that keep noise inside the engine.
4. Size and Portability
One of the main advantages of a small portable generator is that it's lightweight and easy to move around. When choosing a small portable generator, consider the generator size and weight, which will affect its portability. Ensure that the generator has carrying handles, smooth wheels, and a compact design for easy storage. Your generator should fit easily in your RV or car trunk without occupying too much space.
5. Safety Features
Safety is vital when it comes to small portable generators, especially if you plan to use them for emergency power backup. Look for generators with features like automatic low-oil shutdown, circuit breaker protection, and overload protection that keep the generator units from overworking and dangerous overheating. Don't forget to check for carbon monoxide detectors, as generators emit carbon monoxide, which can be hazardous to your family's health if not managed correctly.
Investing in a small portable generator will provide you with peace of mind and security when you need it most. Finding a generator with the right combination of features to suit your lifestyle and needs is easy but requires a bit of research. Remember to consider the power output, fuel efficiency, noise level, size and portability, and safety features when choosing a small portable generator. Be sure to read reviews, check references, and ask for recommendations before making a final decision.

Volvo V50 as an camper, a review of sorts.
As one do, we decided to take a road trip during the weekend to a national park in the south of Sweden, a short round trip of about 1250 kilometers (about 776 miles) but we had a small problem, due to #coronavirus we really didn’t want to sleep at a hotel or even meet anyone if possible and both our tents are kind of out of order due to, well stupidity actually (Not cleaned before stored = mold 🤢). So the logical solution would be to take the rv that we live in full time, but we like to experiment so of course we decided that the Volvo would be an excellent bedroom for a couple of nights, so we packed our light sleeping bags, threw in a madras and hit the road. News to probably no one: The two nights we slept in the car was actually the worst of sleeps ever had by anyone 😅
First of, a V50 is small, a mean, it looks doable but in reality, when sleeping beside some one who don’t move exactly the same as yourself while sleeping you’ll be in a world of discomfort while trying to find some sort of rest on a 45 cm (17,7 inch) narrow patch. Also, I think we actually froze to death during the first night so on Saturday we bought a carbon monoxide detector so we at least could safely run the diesel heater a couple of times during the following night, awesome right? We set the timer on the heater to 2 and 4 am and woke up at 2:30 actually thinking we fallen asleep in a sauna, the heat was insane, hot as a motherf*xxer and soaking wet we tried to go back to sleep knowing that we’d probably be coocked again in a couple of hours but surprise surprise, the heater didn’t start at 4 so instead we woke at 5 freezing the bejesus of us 😂 I kind of had the feeling that this would backfire but somehow I only have good memories from the last time we slept in the car but hey, we’ll probably do this again anyway 😂
We give the Volvo a strong 2 stars out of 5, maybe it’ll be better later this summer? 🤔

For Inquiries, Call JG Beacham Electric at 912-598-6230!
What is a Back-Up Generator?
Generators are appliances that provide electricity to your home, business, or mobile device. Generators do not produce electricity, contrary to what their name suggests. Instead, they take another type of energy and turn it into electricity. Generators can be used for back-up power when your home or business is affected by inclement weather or downed power lines. Generators can also be used for power while on the move, such as traveling in an RV or camping.
What You Should Know About Buying a Back-Up Generator
Safety Concerns
Safety concerns must be considered before purchasing a generator. Like any other source of exhaust, generators can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Generators produce no different from your car's exhaust and can cause CO poisoning. To ensure exhaust doesn't reach your living space, a portable CO detector installed in your house is recommended.
Types of Back-Up Generators
Portable Generator
Portable generators can be carried around. Many come with wheels, making them portable and easy to carry wherever electricity is required. Smaller generators can be carried around on their own rather than moving around. Standby generators are more expensive than portable generators and use fuel.
Inverter Generators
Inverter Generators are similar to portable generators in that they are smaller and more easily transportable. However, inverter generators are lighter than standard portable generators. Inverter generators are quieter and can be used for a wider variety of activities, including camping.
3. Standby Generator
A standby generator provides a permanent solution that is more reliable than a portable generator. However, it is more extensive and more expensive. It's not portable, but it can be permanently installed at your house or business. The standby generator automatically switches on when power is lost. Standby generators can be powered by natural gas or propane. They remove many of the safety issues associated with portable generators. They are the most expensive option, but they could still be an option if safety is your priority.
Power Requirements
When choosing a generator, the quantity of power you require is an important issue to consider. Consider what the generator will be utilized for when answering this question.
Despite their lower power, portable generators can be utilized to power tiny appliances. Standby generators are ideal for powering your entire home. Consider what appliances you need working at all times. For example, a refrigerator requires 600 watts. Your sump pump (helpful in flood-prone areas) requires about 1,300 to 2,150 watts to start. It also needs 800 to 1,000 watts for running. A portable heater can require up to 1,500 watts for winter areas. The smallest devices, such as our phones charging, require only 10 watts. This is not an issue compared to large appliances. You'll need to consider your needs and determine what you need.
Common Uses
The power your generator needs to produce is not the only thing that matters. It's also about what you will use it for. It's very different from choosing a generator to power your house during an outage from one that you will use on a camping trip. Standby generators, which are permanently installed at your home, provide back-up electricity in an outage. Portable generators, however, can be carried around with you. An inverter generator with less noise and lighter weight is a better option for those who want to be more mobile.
Fuel Source
There are three ways to fuel your generator. The type of generator and model you have will determine the options available. Primarily, portable generators are fuelled with gasoline. Both portable and standby generators can be fueled by propane. Natural gas, however, is not available to power portable generators but can be used for standby generators.
Budget
Your budget will play a significant role in the choice of generator. Keep in mind that portable generators tend to be more affordable than standby generators.
Additional Features
A generator can have many features. Consider which features you are most concerned about and which you can do without before choosing the suitable model. These are some features you should look for in generators.
Automatic CO shutoff. This safety function automatically turns off your generator when it detects dangerous levels of gas buildup. This safety feature is essential to ensure your family's safety.
An electric start does not require you to pull-start your engine. Instead, you push a button and start your generator.
An automatic start is required if your generator is used to power your home during a power cut. If your power goes out, it will turn on the generator automatically.
Fuel gauge will show the fuel level of your generator and know when it is time to refill.
Multiple outlets will allow you to plug in multiple appliances or items and spread out the wattage.
The Low oil shutoff feature protects your generator against damage by turning it off when the oil drops below a set level.
Maintaining Your Generator
It doesn't matter which generator you choose, regular maintenance is essential. Regular maintenance will ensure your generator runs at its best and it will be safe to use. You must service the generators every year to be used in an emergency. It is critical to change and check the oil in your generator. Check your oil before use and change it every 100 hours if it is a new generator. To ensure that your oil is in top condition, make sure to also check the spark plug and filters.
Also, don't leave your generator unattended for too long. Your generator will help to remove moisture and recharge its battery. Let it run dry if you don't plan to use your generator for more than a few days. This will prevent fuel from accumulating in the lines. Make sure your generator is stored correctly so it can be protected.
Avoid keeping your generator outside. It is best not to leave any green debris or leaves on it. Organic, dry debris can get into the generator and cause fire when it's lit up.
The Bottom Line
When choosing the best generator, there are numerous factors to consider. Considering all of the above factors will help you narrow down the best generator type and model for you.

When Quita was asked what she thinks about the change in weather and all the rain this was her response 🤣 While I'm being funny the reality of it is the weather has changed and it's all ready cold outside, the rain just adds to the miserableness of it all, Lola & Quita live in a small travel trailer, many others are living in the same or RVs, cars, tents, doorways, majority of the trailers & RVs do not have adequate safe heating, for a huge majority there is no carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers or an emergency way out. Many animals and their humans go to bed wet or cold & wake up the same way so we will be pushing for blankets, animal sweaters, coats, towels and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers. If you have some ideas on who might donate those last 2 items please let us know, these items will save lives. https://www.instagram.com/p/CV6NyRQBJQA/?utm_medium=tumblr
