How’s the trip home going? ;)
Nancy wasn’t sure why exactly George was using actual emoticons but she didn’t care. She’d had enough trouble trying to keep her feelings for Ace locked down all day and that was with witnesses. She wasn’t looking forward to a multi-hour drive home just the two of them.
Why did you take Bess?
She sent back. George replied immediately.
I wasn’t about to make her sit through the sexual tension
I like her more than you like me
Nancy rolled her eyes.
You didn’t have to come
The three dots showing George was texting stopped then started again.
YOU DIDN”T GIVE ME A CHOICE
Which, to be fair, Nancy had given her a choice. It just wasn’t a very good one.
I can still send Nick that video of you gushing about him last weekend
Nancy could picture George’s scowl perfectly.
I was drunk
You said you’d delete it
Nancy smirked
I will
Eventually
“Everything okay?” Nancy started at Ace’s voice. She turned to him only to find him glancing between her and the road, concern on his face.
“Yeah. Fine.” She held up her phone as it buzzed. “George.”
Ace nodded. “They get home okay?”
“Yup. George and Nick talked to Ted and she’s going to keep running her website.”
“You okay with that?”
Nancy frowned. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
Ace cocked an eyebrow. “Being the plucky sidekick?”
Nancy snorted. “I get more than enough media attention these days. George can have all the limelight she wants.” She paused. “Besides. Fan fans have a nice ring to it. What would my fan club be?”
“The Drew Crew?” Ace offered.
“...you came up with that real quick.”
Ace shrugged. “It...might be how I think of us some times.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah. I like it. Belonging to a crew.”
“To my crew?” Nancy asked, somewhat jokingly.
Ace looked at her for as long as he dared before turning back to the road and saying, “yes.”
Nancy didn’t know what to say to that. The silence dragged on a bit until Ace cleared his throat. “I’m glad we could help Joe out.”
“Me too,” Nancy agreed quietly. “He deserves peace.”
“Yeah. And to know the woman he loved loved him just as much. Even after all these years, after everything.”
The silence was loaded.
Nancy cleared her throat. “It’s good.” She paused. “To know the people you love, love you back.”
“Yeah.” Ace agreed.
Neither of them said anything else the entire ride back.
