Suntory Toki --- Whisky Review Time
Founded in 1899, Suntory was originally a small store in Osaka which sold imported wines. Over the next century that small store grew into a powerful multi-national corporation. Suntory specializes primarily in alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, and spirits as well as some soft drinks. Recognize these famous brands of liquor; Jim Beam, Makers Mark, Knob Creek, Courvoisier, Cruzan, Lamphroaig, Pinnacle, Old Crow, Canadian Club, Skinny Girl. Well, they are all owned by Suntory.
In 1923 Suntory opened it's first distillery and began making whisky. Japanese whisky grew in popularity as American GI's brought it back home with them after serving in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. By the 1970's Suntory was rapidly expanding and began heavily marketing overseas. They even hired Sammy Davis Jr. to do commercials.
youtube
Suntory Toki is their most common overseas product. A blended whisky created from malted barley, it is produced from the Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Chita distilleries, aged at lest three years in American oak barrels, and then blended into one product. I think I bought this for around $30, in Japan I bet it's much cheaper.
Drinking from a glencairn, the whisky gives off a sweet aroma. Very very light, to the point where it almost doesn't smell like whisky at all. It smells more like a dry white wine, like a pino blanc, chardonnay, or riesling. Is this really whisky? With it's very light color it almost looks like a white wine. After tasting I can confirm that it is indeed a whisky. It has tasting notes of honey, green apple, green grape, and a bit of vanilla. It finishes with a very dry oakiness, and leaves a dry taste in your mouth that quickly goes away, the aftertaste does not hang in the mouth long like other whiskies. The flavors of this whisky are very light and subtle, for me perhaps too subtle.
To me this is a good whisky, not great, just good. It could be better. If it had a little bit more body to it and a bit more flavor, I would rate this higher. As it stands I rate it 3.2 out of 5 stars. I might buy a bottle every once in a blue moon, particular if it is on sale. I will drink it if it is put in front of me. But I probably would rather drink something else. Now I must come forward and admit a big bias, I'm a bourbon and rye drinker, whiskies which tend to have much bolder and richer flavors. So perhaps this whisky doesn't fit my palate. I could see someone who enjoys dry white wines likewise enjoying this. Perhaps Scotch drinkers who enjoy the non-peated Scotches would like this. But it's just not for me.

Schlafly Beer and WellBeing Brewing Co. announces a joint venture.
Tumblr media
Press Release
ST. LOUIS, MO ... Schlafly Beer and WellBeing Brewing Co. announce today a new strategic joint venture that leverages the respective strengths of both Schlafly Beer, St. Louis’ original, independent craft brewery, and WellBeing Brewing Co., a fast-growing national non-alcoholic craft beer pioneer in St. Louis, to create compelling value for both companies and consumers.
Consumers will soon be able to find WellBeing Brewing Co’s non-alcoholic craft beers in many of the same on and off-premise establishments across Schlafly’s distribution footprint. From a business perspective, the partnership strategically aligns both companies by combining the strength of Schlafly Beer’s management and operational capabilities with WellBeing Brewing Co.’s focus on innovation and creative expertise as a growing non-alcoholic craft beer player.
“This is truly a joint venture.  It allows us to scale our brand to a new level,” said CEO of WellBeing Brewing Co. Jeff Stevens. “ We can utilize Schlafly’s operational resources, yet still grow our brand under our vision. As craft brewers look for ways to adapt to a changing consumer landscape, non-alcoholic offerings are becoming essential. We believe that we can be a driver of innovation across the adult non-alcoholic space.”
As partners, Schlafly Beer will manage the sales and production of WellBeing NA brands, collaborating with WellBeing’s current contract brewing and distributor partners. Schlafly will also brew and pack new non-alcoholic products for WellBeing, manage inventory, materials procurement, logistics, and sales support. WellBeing will oversee product development, marketing, content, publicity, and grow its e-commerce business.
“This is a really innovative way to approach collaborative partnerships,” commented Fran Caradonna, CEO of Schlafly Beer. “Under Jeff Stevens’ leadership, WellBeing Brewing Co. has built an incredible brand, and we align in so many ways from our focus on quality to care for the community. The non-alcoholic beer space is a growing category, so this relationship allows our team to get more beverage options in consumers’ hands through our combined distribution footprints.”
According to a February 2022 article in Forbes, research firm CGA Strategy found that no and low-alcohol beers is one of the fastest-growing segments in the overall beer category, increasing by 96% over the last 52 weeks at the time of publication. Paste magazine cites the following 2021 study which states that the total volume for the non-alcoholic category is forecasted to grow by 31% in the overall total beverage alcohol market by 2024. The same study also found beer and cider brands dominate the overall no/low-alcohol market with a 92% share due to early innovation and investment in quality from brands like Wellbeing Brewing Co.
The new strategic partnership between Schlafly Beer and Wellbeing Brewing Co. also allows both brands to appeal to today’s modern drinking consumer. More than half (58%) of no/low alcohol consumers in the IWSR study choose to switch between no/low alcohol and full-strength alcoholic beverages on the same occasion, while only 14% state that they do not drink alcohol at all, signaling signs of moderation and health consciousness as consumer drivers.
Schlafly Beer and WellBeing Brewing Co.’s joint venture will begin now, and WellBeing Brewing Co.’s line of non-alcoholic craft beers, brewed by Schlafly Beer, will be on shelves later this year. For more information about Schlafly Beer distribution, see here. Learn more about WellBeing Brewing Co.’s story here and see their portfolio here.

About WellBeing Brewing Co.: WellBeing Brewing, founded in 2018 by Jeff Stevens and Genevieve Barlow, is a nationally recognized craft brewery solely dedicated to brewing great tasting non-alcoholic (NA) craft beers for discoverers and recoverers alike. The idea behind the brewery was born out of a personal desire by Jeff, who is 25+ years sober, to elevate the non-alcoholic social landscape after having experienced the constant disappointment of limited beverage choices available for people who don't drink alcohol, as well as the negative stigma associated with not drinking. With two locations in St. Louis, MO and Virginia Beach, VA, WellBeing beers are brewed for anyone who enjoys an active lifestyle, is reevaluating their relationship with alcohol, or simply wants to take the night off, but still be social and feel included in the fun. WellBeing Brewing's portfolio of craft beers are available on its website  - wellbeingbrewing.com - and at major retail chains throughout the USA.

Can you believe it? Distill America XVI is happening on Saturday, May 18th, 2024. The event runs from 1-6pm at Breese Stevens Field in Madison, WI. This is the same venue as last year.
Maybe you’re new to #Wisconsin, or perhaps you’re just getting into distilled spirits. You may be curious about what Distill America is about. I’ve attended for the last eight years and am friends with the folks who make this event come to life. As such, I’ve got the rundown for everything you need to know.
Distill America was founded 16 years ago by a small group of spirits enthusiasts in Madison known as the Madison Malt Society. They often traveled to Chicago for #whiskey events. However, ever-increasing expenses damaged their enjoyment and took away from the excitement of attending year after year. Aside from travel costs, they contended with pricey entry fees for the distillers and attendees. They were struck with the notion that they could create an event locally that anyone could attend every year, whether they were an exhibitor or a fan of distilled #spirits. The goal was to attract bartenders, retailers, and the general public to learn about what is on the market and available to enjoy.
The founders wanted to create something unique rather than simply recreating the typical whiskey event. Star Liquor on Williams (Willy) Street got involved. The group then decided they wanted this event to be unlike most others. They also wanted to introduce visitors to exclusively American-made spirits, not just Bourbon, Rye, and other American whiskeys. That opened the door for #rum, #brandy, #gin, #vodka, and other brown or clear spirits.
Behind the scenes, there was much volunteer work to get the process going. The crazy thing is nobody involved took a salary. All proceeds benefit the non-profit Wisconsin Distillers Guild. The Guild’s mission is to promote Wisconsin-made spirits, agriculture, tourism, small-batch distillation, and the safe enjoyment of alcoholic beverages. Distill America also creates scholarships for people to take coursework and learn about the distilling industry.
From the smallest craft #distillery to the largest, established distilleries, they all travel to Madison to entertain and educate true spirits enthusiasts and people new to everything. There is something for everyone to enjoy.
The Madison Malt Society's desire is and always has been for Distill America to grow and remain sustainable for the future without losing what makes Distill America unique. But that means change will happen. Distill America went further by offering educational seminars about seven years ago.
Now that you know the background of Distill America, I have a few tips and tricks for attending. First and foremost, enjoy this event responsibly. Make arrangements in advance to get to and from the event safely. Bring a designated driver who can attend for a mere $23.00. Your DD will have access to any non-alcoholic beverages and food.
If this is your first time attending a spirits festival, please know that it is easy to get schnockered before you even realize it. Eat a full meal before showing up. Appetizers will be available on the floor, but you shouldn’t show up on an empty stomach. Also, it is perfectly acceptable to not finish what’s in your glass. Most people don’t. Sip, dump the rest and move to the next table.
Last year, a friend who was inexperienced with these events came with me. Let’s just say he didn’t remember the ride home, didn’t remember having dinner at a restaurant, and was extremely… happy.
VIP+ gets you on the floor at 1:00pm before anyone else can look around. There are special seminars to attend, and you’ll also get special glassware beyond the standard that everyone else receives. Nicole Austin from George Dickel promises something extraordinary (and yet undisclosed).
VIP gets you through the door at 2:00pm, and you’ll visit booths an hour before General Admission. Exhibitors offer special VIP-only pours. Some big legacy distilleries served up their most sought-after limited-edition distilled spirits in previous years. I would expect the same this year.
Now, if you don’t have your tickets yet, you should know that both VIP+ and VIP tickets are sold out. However, General Admission and Designated Driver tickets are still available on the venue’s website.
General Admission gains entry at 3:00pm, and there’s still plenty of opportunity to taste awesome things that American-only distilleries have to offer. There are over 80 vendors from across the United States, and there are between 10 and 15 more tables this year than last.
No matter which ticket you possess, you’ll get a complimentary Glencairn nosing glass from the event’s sponsor, Bulleit Bourbon, and food throughout the evening. Attend the educational seminars – one is a cocktail class presented by Dancing Goat and J. Henry & Sons. Distill America is an outdoor event under tents. If you’ve never been to Madison in mid-May, you know we can have all four seasons on parade in a single day, so dress appropriately.
Finally, I’ll be walking around doing meet-and-greets with various distillers. As always, Mrs. Whiskeyfellow will attend, as will a very special guest this year: Mama Whiskeyfellow.
If you see me, stop me and say hello. I’m always happy to chat and make new friends. Together, we will #DrinkCurious. Cheers!
Whiskeyfellow encourages you to enjoy your whiskey as you see fit but begs you do so responsibly.

Also, the increasing disposable income in some Middle Eastern and African countries contributes to higher beer consumption and the exploration of unique adjuncts. Regulatory changes, such as relaxed alcohol laws in certain regions, further stimulate market growth, as does the cultural acceptance and integration of beer into social and dining experiences.
Beer Adjuncts – Overview
Beer adjuncts are non-malt ingredients added to beer during the brewing process to enhance flavor, body, or other characteristics. Common adjuncts include grains like corn, rice, wheat, and oats, as well as sugars, fruits, spices, and even coffee. While traditional brewing methods adhere to the purity law (Reinheitsgebot) that limits ingredients to water, malt, hops, and yeast, adjuncts can add unique flavors and textures to beer. They are often used in lighter lagers and American-style beers to lighten the body and reduce production costs. The use of adjuncts is a subject of debate among beer enthusiasts, with some favoring traditional methods and others embracing innovation.
