Lastly, copy and paste the email stated in the newsletter at our (NZ) state broadcasters TNZ and RNZ.
Phil O’Sullivan Head of News and Current Affairs Television New Zealand [email protected]
Mark Stevens Chief News Officer Radio New Zealand [email protected]
Kia ora Mr O’Sullivan and Mr Stevens, As supposed news and current affairs for our state media outlets which should set the highest standards of journalism, please explain why your news is so Eurocentric, favouring Israel and sidelining Palestinians. You both use almost exclusively news from three European news agencies - AP, Reuters and the BBC - or from major US or UK based newspapers such as the Telegraph, the Times, the Washington Post or the New York Times. This reporting centres on Israeli narratives, Israeli reasoning, Israeli explanations and Israeli justifications for what they are doing to Palestinians. Israeli spokespeople are front and centre and quoted extensively and directly. Palestinian voices, when they are covered, are usually at the margins. On TV in particular Palestinians are most often portrayed as the incoherent victims of overwhelming grief. It's inevitable that when it comes to setting the agenda for how we perceive what’s going on in Palestine, Israeli versions of the “truth”, which are dominated by lies, are allowed to dominate. The last seven months is riddled with examples. Just two days after the October 7th attack on Israel, pro-Palestinian protestors were accused of chanting “Gas the Jews” outside the Sydney Opera House. The story was carried around the world through mainstream media as a nasty anti-semitic slur on Palestinians and their supporters. Four months later, after an intensive investigation New South Wales police concluded it never happened. The words were never chanted. However the Radio New Zealand website today still carries a Reuters report saying “A rally outside the Sydney Opera House two days after the Hamas attack had ignited heated debate after a small group were filmed chanting "Gas the Jews". Even if RNZ did the right thing and removed the report now the old adage is true: “A lie is halfway around the world before the truth has got its trousers on”. Despite reporting the pro-Israel lie you Four months later and the police report is not news but the damage has been done. Numerous other examples can be found in your reporting where Israeli lies are reported but the debunking of those lies is buried. The 40 beheaded babies, UNRWA staff involved in the Hamas-led attack of October 7th and many more examples of Israeli propaganda which were lapped up by western media, including RNZ and TVNZ, stand as testament to the failure of RNZ and TVNZ to report accurately and without bias to New Zealanders. TVNZ has been particularly appalling with the dreadful Q and A interview with the Israeli ambassador and the almost as bad interview with the Palestinian Authority representative where the journalist pushed, not once, not twice but three times a blatant lie to smear the Palestinian resistance. Just to be clear, Hamas has the same policy as New Zealand, the US and most of the world – support for a two-state solution based on 1967 borders. Putting Israeli lies in the mouth of a New Zealand journalist makes them no less odious. I’m looking forward to your response. (your name)

Heading to New Plymouth for Electricarna; a car show featuring only clean vehicles! Oddly, this EV show is in a region known for drilling oil and in a city with a council that hates electric vehicles. For years the New Plymouth District Council worked tirelessly to halt new DC charger installs but despite their efforts they finally failed and lost the fight. 😎

£82 million sea wall to protect coastal Dawlish rail route. Photo by Dept. of Transport. UK.GOV.   Protecting the Vital Coastal Rail Route The newly constructed sea wall is a crucial development in safeguarding the coastal rail route in Dawlish. The £82 million project, completed in two phases, ensures the safety of local passengers during extreme weather conditions. Importantly, the latter stage of the construction also protects the historic Dawlish train station, which holds a Grade 2 listing. Transport Secretary Mark Harper expressed his delight at the completion of these significant projects, highlighting the government's commitment to enhancing vital rail routes for passengers in the South West. He emphasized the government's investment in essential infrastructure to support economic growth.   Building Resilience after Severe Storms The Dawlish sea wall project is part of the £165 million South West Resilience Programme, initiated by the government in response to devastating storms in 2014. These storms caused extensive damage, rendering the tracks unusable for eight weeks and disconnecting passengers from the rail network. The completion of the sea wall signifies a major milestone in the programme, providing a promenade and new public areas for the local community. Ongoing efforts by Network Rail include the development of an accessible footbridge with lifts at Dawlish Station. Michelle Handforth, Regional Managing Director of Network Rail's Wales and Western region, expressed her delight at the official opening of the Dawlish sea wall, highlighting the collaborative efforts between world-leading engineers and government funding. She also extended her gratitude to the Dawlish community for their patience and support during the two-and-a-half-year construction period.   A New Railway Station in Marsh Barton During his visit, Secretary of State Mark Harper also attended the official opening of the Marsh Barton railway station, which is fully accessible and managed by Great Western Railway (GWR). Located near Exeter, this station serves the popular Exeter to Plymouth rail line. Scheduled to open for passengers on July 4, 2023, the station is expected to ease congestion on busy roads, providing a sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation alternative. Mark Hopwood, Managing Director of Great Western Railway, emphasized the significance of new stations like Marsh Barton in promoting sustainable travel and bringing the railway closer to communities. He expressed excitement about the benefits that these stations, including Portway 'Park and Ride' in Bristol and Reading Green Park, will bring to the local economy, residents, businesses, and leisure travelers.   Better Connectivity and Access to Opportunities Marsh Barton railway station, delivered and funded by Devon County Council with contributions from the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership, Exeter and Teignbridge District Councils, and the Department for Transport, is designed to enhance connectivity and provide greater access to employment, business, and education opportunities. The station also offers a convenient link to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, facilitating easier access to essential medical services for residents. Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment, and Transport, expressed satisfaction in seeing Marsh Barton railway station become a reality. Despite facing various challenges, the council remained committed to the project, aiming to provide more sustainable transport options, alleviate congestion on roads, improve air quality, and reduce carbon emissions. Marsh Barton Station marks the third station delivered in Devon over the past eight years, demonstrating the council's dedication to enhancing the county's rail network.   A Celebration of Partnership and Progress The completion of the Dawlish sea wall and the opening of Marsh Barton railway station represent significant achievements in enhancing rail connectivity, protecting vital routes, and supporting economic growth. Transport Secretary Mark Harper's visit to Devon showcased the government's commitment to investing in infrastructure and improving transportation links to benefit local communities and stimulate economic development in the region.   Sources: THX News, Department for Transport & The Rt Hon Mark Harper MP.  Read the full article

What’s the best Mounting Height for Freestanding Commercial Signage in Southfield, MI?
Tumblr media
Today’s post reviews new research on the minimum effective mounting height for on-premise freestanding commercial signage. Read on or call 248-965-5946 to speak directly with a commercial signage specialist in Southfield, MI.
What Is The Best Mounting Height For Freestanding Commercial Signage?
In a research report for the Interdisciplinary Journal of Signage and Wayfinding, authors Garvey & Klena (2019) sought “to develop best practices for optimal freestanding on-premise sign mounting height based on roadway factors, sign visibility, and traffic safety” (p. 3).
Prior to their report, height recommendations were scarce. Even the International Sign Association’s guidelines for “Design and Placement of Signs” made little mention of height. Unless you worked directly with a commercial signage specialist, the only authoritative mounting height recommendations came from local ordinances, which we know to be primarily “regulated from the standpoint of aesthetics”—that is, with little consideration of marketing effectiveness, visibility, or driver safety (p. 3).
That’s a big problem for businesses who rely on adequate visibility to generate a return on their commercial signage investment—in one study, researchers found that commercial signage installed according to the mounting height recommendations specified in ordinances (i.e. level with the road) were blocked “anywhere from 11 to 90 percent of the time,” depending on the rate of traffic (Garvey & Klena, 2019, p. 5).
Southfield businesses deserve better visibility for their commercial signage. To shed some light on the matter, we’ve dug deep into the research to share some proven recommendations.
The following guidelines only apply to freestanding on-premise commercial signage, which includes “ground-mounted, monument, pylon, and pole signs” (Garvey & Klena, 2019, p. 3). If you need help determining the right mounting height for ADA signs, wayfinding graphics, indoor point-of-sale displays, or any other sign type, get in touch with our team in Southfield, Michigan.
These were some of Garvey and Klena’s key findings regarding the ideal height for commercial signage:
To “ensure that all on-premise signs have sufficient area and mounting height to provide a motorist with adequate time and travel distance to detect a sign, read and understand its contents, and then execute an appropriate driving maneuver,” the research-based United States Sign Council Foundation Model Sign Code recommends a maximum free standing commercial signage height of 8 feet in residential zones; 12 feet in office and professional zones; and 14 to 86 feet in commercial and industrial areas, depending on zoning district and speed limit (Garvey & Klena, 2019, p. 5).
In field validation tests, Garvey & Klena (2019) found that the average minimum effective mounting height was 48 feet for on-premise commercial signage with a 10-foot offset, and 8.78 feet for signs with a 20-foot offset (p. 9)

RNZ Pacific 1207 11 May 2023
7425Khz 1154 11 MAY 2023 - RNZ PACIFIC (NEW ZEALAND) in ENGLISH from RANGITAIKI. SINPO = 45434. English, music until pips and news @1200z anchored by Vicki McKay. Whangārei Boys High student Karnin Ahorangi Petera died on Tuesday in the Abbey caves after a school trop there went ahead despite forecast bad weather. Fourteen others and two adults managed to escape to safety. The school and its board are refusing to answer questions about what safety assessments were carried out and who signed off on the expedition. Hundreds of striking secondary and area school teachers marched on Parliament to protest for better pay and conditions. The strike affected South Island schools and was scheduled to move to the remainder of the North Island on Thursday. PPTA acting president Chris Abercrombie told the rally at Parliament the teachers' collective agreement negotiations were proving to be a long battle. "It is not good enough that in Aotearoa New Zealand we have teachers going to food banks. And I know this to be true because I've had to do it myself," he said. District Council is asking the government to help ease a 17 million dollar deficit caused by huge cyclone recovery costs. Council officials estimate 70 million dollars would have been spent on the recovery by the end of June, including 60 million on roading, 7 million or welfare support, and more than 3 million on collecting flood damaged waste. New Zealand is advising shoppers to buy their produce in-season as prices continue to soar. Food price inflation is at its highest level in 36 years. Stats NZ's food price index rose 12.5 percent in the year ended April, the highest annual rate since late 1987. The main drivers over the year were a 14 percent rise in grocery prices, and more than 22 percent for fruit and vegetables prices. Thousands of migrants have been rushing to the US-Mexico border just hours before a Trump-era policy that allowed for their swift removal is set to expire. As the policy, known as Title 42, nears its end, about 10,000 migrants have been crossing the 3218km border each day, record numbers nearly double the average seen just two months ago. NPDC Māori Ward Deputation 2020
Tumblr media
-----
Good afternoon counsellors. Tēnā koutou.
Good afternoon mayor Neil. Tēnā koe.
Good afternoon to those who have come to this chamber because they believe that our freedom, as Māori and Pākehā, is profoundly bound together. Tēnā koutou katoa.
Today I speak to you as a person whose decedents arrived on the shores Ngāmotu in the colonial vessel the Oriental. I talk you as a Pākehā person who grew up under the watchful eye of Taranaki. I speak you as a recovering racist. I talk to you as someone who is committed to the work of confronting my own biases and shortcomings and working to building a better New Plymouth.
Today I address you as a cleric in the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. I speak to you as a priest at the Taranaki Cathedral of St Mary. As a person who considers confronting racist systems, pursuing justice, and striving for peace is central to what it means to follow the way of Jesus.
As black liberation theologian James Cone said, "Racism is a profound contradiction to the gospel. No one can be a representative of Jesus and treat others as subhuman. There can be no compromise on this point."
Today I address as a son, a husband, and as a father. I speak as someone who dreams that my family, my children, my grandchildren, will have the opportunity to grow up in a district that honours the Treaty of Waitangi. In a community that sees the profound value of meaningful and equitable Māori representation at New Plymouth District Council's top decision-making table. In a district known for its pursuit of justice, reconciliation, and peace, not a silent, or angry, acquiesce to the status quo that pushes our Treaty partners to the side-lines.
I stand here with love, faith, and hope. Love for all of you despite our differences. Faith that the moral arc of the universe bends toward justice. Hope that this council will be the council that makes positive and active moves toward making and equitable Māori representation at New Plymouth District Council reality in our community. Hope that this council is the council that plays an active role in addressing the racist laws that make it extremely difficult for Māori to participate in local government affairs meaningfully.
I stand here today as someone who believes that meaningful and equitable Māori representation at NPDC top decision-making table is not only good for Māori; it is good for everyone. Our humanity as Pākehā, my humanity as Pākehā, is marred by the violence done to Māori by Eurocentric systems that marginalise and exclude. Integral to starting the journey, confronting our past and moving toward a better future together is the establishment of a Māori Ward as means to staring the journey toward just partnership and toward being better Treaty partners in our district. None of us is free until we are all free.
To that end, with love, with faith and with hope, I would urge NPDC to establish a Māori Ward seat without delay, a seat elected by Māori, for Māori, and able to meaningfully contribute to the discussions and deliberations on behalf of Māori at the NPDC top table. It is my view that consultation is unnecessary. Consultation plays into the hands of those who wish to create divisions in our community and, as we have herd in these chambers, "racists don't deserve a fair say." With love, with faith, and with hope, I would urge the NPDC to work hard to educate our district on the benefits of Māori representation in local government affairs. And I ask the council to play an active role in dismantling the racist legislation that makes it extremely difficult for Māori to participate in local government affairs.
Aboriginal activist Lilla Watson says "our liberation is bound together."
Will we be a community that will give voice to those who have been excluded? Will be a community that is committed to working together? Will we be a community that is committed to justice? Will we be a community that through this journey is liberated in new ways of sharing life together?
I hope that this council paves the way for this to happen.
Kia tau te rangimāire ki a koutou katoa.
