Rescate de una ópera española

[José Luis Turina, Miguel Ángel García Cañamero, Félix Palomero y Ramón Sobrino en el acto de presentación / RAFA MARTÍN]

El sello de la OCNE presenta la grabación de una ópera olvidada de Ramón Carnicer (1789-1855)

Entre las misiones de una institución como la Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España se cuenta, en lugar principalísimo, la de difundir el patrimonio propio, fomentando la creación de música nueva, pero también trabajando por la recuperación de obras antiguas. Así que cuando el pasado 8 de noviembre, el compositor y académico José Luis Turina, Félix Palomero, director técnico de la OCNE, Miguel Ángel García Cañamero, director del Coro, y Ramón Sobrino, editor crítico de la ópera junto a María Encina Cortizo, presentaron un triple CD con Elena e Malvina de Ramón Carnicer, estaban cumpliendo, de forma demasiado tardía (pero ese es otro tema), con una responsabilidad ineludible, pues aunque la industria discográfica se ha transformado radicalmente en el nuevo siglo, la grabación sigue siendo el medio más directo para poner el patrimonio sonoro a disposición de quienes, en este caso, lo pagan, los contribuyentes españoles.

La edición de Elena e Malvina es el trabajo de toda una década de Cortizo y Encina para el ICCMU (Instituto Complutense de Ciencias Musicales), cuya labor en pro de la música española debe de ser convenientemente alabada. La obra fue registrada en el concierto extraordinario ofrecido por la OCNE el 14 de mayo de 2016 (y de ahí la anterior referencia al tardío trasvase al formato físico), cuando junto a los conjuntos se reunieron un grupo de importantes cantantes españoles, liderados por la soprano Raquel Lojendio y la mezzo Clara Mouriz, que encarnaron los roles principales, pero que incluía también a Gustavo Peña, Juan Antonio Sanabria, Josep Miquel Ramón y Javier Franco, todos bajo la batuta de Guillermo García Calvo.

Elena e Malvina es la cuarta ópera de Ramón Carnicer, la que le sirvió para su debut en el Teatro del Príncipe de Madrid, donde la obra se estrenó el 11 de febrero de 1829. Presentada como melodrama semiserio in due atti, cuenta con un libreto en italiano de Felice Romani y, en opinión de Cortizo y Sobrino, supone la transición entre los primeros modos compositivos de Carnicer, cercanos al modelo rossiniano y aún muy presentes en ella, y los de su segunda etapa, que entroncará con el mundo romántico. De hecho, la ópera está ambientada ya en una Escocia legendaria de referencias góticas (castillos, tempestades, venganzas, duelos) y presenta una trama de amores traicionados con final feliz, y de ahí su adscripción al género semiserio.

Natural de Tárrega (Lérida), Carnicer trabajó para el Teatro de la Santa Cruz de Barcelona, que lo comisionó varias veces para viajar a Italia en busca de cantantes y de partituras de los grandes maestros italianos. Allí estrenó sus primeras óperas, Adele di Lusignano (1819), Elena e Costantino (1821) y Don Giovanni Tenorio (1822). Tras la invasión de los Cien Mil Hijos de San Luis que puso fin al trienio liberal, Carnicer se exilió, primero en París y luego en Londres, pero en 1827 decidió volver a España, donde fue literalmente secuestrado por el gobierno para que dejara Barcelona y ocupara la dirección de los teatros de la Corte, el Teatro de la Cruz y el Teatro del Príncipe, en sustitución de Saverio Mercadante. Allí presentó Elena e Malvina y después Cristoforo Colombo (1831), Eufemio di Messina (1832) e Ismalia (1838). Pudo participar en algunas otras óperas y se le atribuye una Ipermestra (1843), aunque su autoría es discutida.

De todo este repertorio, sólo Elena e Costantino estaba en formato CD (lo publicó el sello italiano Dynamic en 2010). El Don Giovanni Tenorio fue editado también en su día por el ICCMU, ofrecido en versión escénica en el Festival Mozart de La Coruña en 2006 y en Pésaro al año siguiente y luego olvidado. La ROSS ofreció en 2012 una versión de concierto de Cristoforo Colombo en la que participaron las voces de Yolanda Auyanet, Cristina Faus y Joan Martín Royo, entre otros, y dirigió Santiago Serrate. En este contexto, la publicación de Elena e Malvina debe ser considerada un acontecimiento en la restauración del Romanticismo musical español, tan maltratado por el tiempo.

Upcoming series: Ena

In September, the filming of Ena began, a biographical series that will focus on the life of Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, queen of Spain through her marriage to Alfonso XIII between May 31, 1906 and April 14, 1931, after being the monarchy deposed later by the proclamation of the Second Republic. Great-grandmother of the current king Philip VI of Spain, of whom she was godmother at his baptism. Throughout six chapters, the series will tell the life of Victoria Eugenie and at the same time offer a portrait of a time that changed the world, the first half of the 20th century, from 1905 to 1945. Born on October 24, 1887 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Ena was the daughter of Henry of Battenberg and Princess Beatrice, youngest daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Her godmother was Eugenia de Montijo, empress consort of France as Napoleón III's wife. The name of the series comes from what her friends and family called her since she was little, Ena.

The fiction is based on the novel of the same name by Pilar Eyre. Javier Olivares, who was behind the acclaimed Isabel and El Ministerio del Tiempo, will be the showrunner and plot manager for Ena. In addition to Olivares, the script is written by Isa Sánchez, Daniel Corpas and Pablo Lara Toledo. The series will be directed entirely by women: Anaïs Pareto, director of the series as a whole, in addition to four episodes, and Estel Díaz, who will direct two episodes.

“Ena is the portrait of historical moments that seem distant but are not so far away, because without them we would not understand the times we live in now,” Olivares declares in the press release sent by TVE. The writer and screenwriter remembers that Victoria Eugenie “fought to be happy in a bitter time, in which she witnessed two world wars, a civil war and a great pandemic, the tortuously called Spanish flu.”

For Pilar Eyre, author of the novel, she was "an extraordinary woman: cultured, supportive, liberal-minded, modern and very loyal." And she is excited because "finally all Spaniards can know" the story of a "misunderstood" woman. in their time, which they will always consider foreign." It is a fiction co-produced by RTVE with Ena La Serie AIE, La Cometa TV and Zona App. José Pastor, director of Film and Fiction at RTVE, has pointed out that "it is a "RTVE is proud to be able to portray this interesting historical character, from the point of view of two women directors and with Javier Olivares as showrunner, in one of its best series."

The Spanish actress of Anglo-Danish descent Kimberly Tell will play Ena and Joan Amargós will play Alfonso XIII. For her part, Elvira Mínguez will play Maria Christina von Habsburg-Lothringen, mother of Alfonso XIII. The cast is completed by Lucía Guerrero (Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha), Raúl Mérida (Alfonso of Orleans and Bourbon), Juan Gea (Álvaro Figueroa y Torres, Count of Romanones), María Morales (María del Carmen Angoloti y Mesa, Duchess of Victoria), Pedro Mari Sánchez (Rodrigo de Saavedra y Vinent, Marquis of Villalobar), Luisa Gavasa (Eugenia de Montijo) and Joaquín Notario (José de Saavedra y Salamanca, Marquis of Viana)

Mariano Peña will play Miguel Primo de Rivera; Jaume Madaula will play the anarchist Mateo Morral, author of the attack committed at the royal wedding; Tomás del Estal will be Emilio María de Torres y González-Arnáu, and Ángel Ruiz will once again give life to Federico García Lorca, a character he already played in El Ministerio del Tiempo, among others.

The series will be filmed entirely in natural exteriors and interiors, like the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso (Segovia), the Palace of Santoña (Madrid), the Palace of Fernán Núñez (Madrid), the Fort of San Francisco (Guadalajara) and the Magdalena Palace (Santander), built in 1911 by the City Council as a tribute to the monarchs and where Ena spent a good part of her summers in Spain, accompanied by the Royal Family. Filming for the series will continue until the end of December.

So, the Magdalena Palace is going to be an important location during the series as a summer palace, the main filming location in Gran Hotel, and in that series Ena appeared in the episode 3×13, played by Aída Filx.

Apart from that, are we getting an Olivaresverse (XD)? Most likely not, and it's just references about his previous works as a showrunner, but there are connections between Isabel, Emdt and Ena: Michelle Jenner starring Isabel as Isabella I of Castile, then appearing in a couple of scenes in Emdt episode 1×04 and being an important figure in the lore as the foundress of the ministry (& Eusebio Poncela playing as Cisneros in both series, and also he played Cisneros in the film La Corona Partida and the Carlos Rey Emperador series); Alfonso XIII is a descendant of Isabella I of Castile; Ángel Ruiz appeard as Lorca in Emdt in 4 episodes and now he is on Ena playing as Lorca again, we don't know yet how much screentime he will get or which will his role be (secondary character most likely), but it's great to see more about him!

Jaca uprising of 1930

On 12th December, 1930, there was a military uprising in Jaca, a town in the Aragonese Pyrenees, against the then monarchic government in Spain. The government, called the dictablanda ("soft dictatorship") had been preceded by the proto-fascist dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera.

A few months before the uprising, in August of that same year, most political parties met in Donostia to agree on a plan to establish the Second Spanish Republic. In October, the PSOE (Socialist Party) and UGT (Socialist union) also agree to go on strike whenever the uprising would happen.

Fermín Galán, a captain who had previously been in prison for organizing an uprising against the Primo de Rivera government, led the revolutionary committee to carry out the uprising. They also contacted revolutionaries in Uesca and Zaragoza, such as Ramón Acín. After much deliberation, they agreed on the 15th December as the date. Despite this, Galán received information that the government had some type of plans. That, along with the impending snow that could close the mountain passes, which would prevent them from accessing Uesca, made Galán announce to the committee that they would do the uprising on the 12th instead.

At 5am on the 12th December, the jacetanian garrison occupied the phone and telegraphs office, post office, and train station, and proclaims the second republic in the Town Hall. The officials in other parts of the country don't make a move, wanting to see how things played out, and the columns, led by Ángel García, set to travel to Uesca are delayed until the afternoon. The next day the arrive to the outskirts of Uesca, at the Cillas sanctuary, where they clash with the government military that had come from Zaragoza. There, the uprising military is defeated.

Other towns declare a general strike and set up revolutionary committees to try to coordinate efforts, but the government military suppresses all movements.

On the 14th, Fermín Galán and Ángel García are subjected to a court martial, and are condemned to death and shot that same day. Other collaborators are sentenced to life in prison for cooperating. The Second Republic was established on 14th April of the next year, and the prisoners, among others, were pardoned and freed, while Galán and García were declared "martyrs of the Republic".

Currently, Galán and García are buried in the Uesca cemetery, and their tombs are declared of cultural interest. A few years ago, the Círculo Republicano de Huesca (Uesca Republican Group) recovered the original plaque in memory of the two captains, gifted by the Terrassa government:
