The Little Girl from Kaiju no 8

Really glad that we got this interaction between Mina and the little girl in the anime that wasn't in the manga (in the manga she only thanks Kaiju no 8 and then Kafka vowing to pursue his dream, no scene of her interacting with Mina or the Defense Force seeing the aftermath of Kaiju no 8's first fight)

This interaction is great because when it does come out that Kafka is Kaiju no 8, and Mina starts to doubt how well she knows Kafka, she'll have this nice little bit of evidence, showing that even from the beginning, Kaiju no 8 has been protecting people. I do wonder if this moment will come back up in the anime when Kafka's reveal happens but that probably won't happen in this season (currently estimating that the anime will end on Kafka's reveal and then start the next season with him in custody).

Another thing that makes this anime-only interaction great is that this little girl does appear again in the manga! Specifically in ch 105, which came out maybe a month ago.

Brief Summary for this chapter : Kafka/Kaiju no 8 is fighting against Kaiju no 9 in the same area as the Tachikawa base (the base where the 3rd division is based out of that covers Western Tokyo) and No 9 starts jacking the radio and TV waves in the area, broadcasting his fight against the 3rd division and then later No 8.

Because of this fight, people are evacuated to underground shelters and begin to panic because of the broadcast

She recounts the story of how No 8 rescued her and her mother (complete with a handmade Kaiju no 8 doll in her hands, such a cute touch) and she reassures the people in the shelter that No 8 will stop No 9. More people recognize Kafka as Kaiju no 8 because of her story which also shifts the people's attitude in the shelter to shift from fear to hope.

(Also think it's really interesting bc in one of the little side notes at the end of the chapters, the author Matsumoto describes that he wanted Kafka to be the kind of character where when they show up, the reader and other characters know that everything will be alright)

And then is once again seen before the end of the chapter, holding hands with another little girl, believing in No 8 to win the fight.

(I don't know if her re-appearance was planned or not but either way I'm glad she got this moment in the anime and more time in the manga)

These two ON GOD need a name

So we have Kafka x Hoshina and Kafka x Mina and some people support a poly relationship and that's all cool (I like all three)

but hear me out

Kafka..... and the mother he saved in chapter 2. (SHE AND HER DAUGHTER REALLY NEED NAMES)

I've looked at the most recent chapter and this is like, the third time these two have shown up. I'm not complaining, they are adorable and I'm sitting here wondering if the kid has a father because its starting to look like she doesn't. The mom looks like a catch, the kid obviously loves and supports Mr. Kaiju Man, and has a flipping homemade stuffie of him.

I just think that after everything is over and the world has stabilized, maybe there could be a meet-cute in a grocery store or something and Kafka just goes full loving and concerned like " Oh my god! How are you? Did your hand come out the other end ok? How's the kid? You guys manage to find a place after everything?" and the mom is like "UM.... I don't think I know you?" And Kafka is all like " Oh sh*t, my bad." And does like a partial transformation on his face and it all clicks for the mom and she's all like "D*mn, that's what he looks like out of uniform. Not bad." And maybe they talk a bit and she invites him over to see the kid and the kid pulls an Anya and casually mentions they don't have a father figure in the house and Itotalyhaventbeenthinkingaboutthisalotintheslightest-

Yeah Mina and Hoshina are great, but the potential for cannon step-Dadka tho. I say this because I think Reno is past the age limit for adoption and Shinomya, while still possible age wise, wouldn't ever express the need or verbally go for it and since she's rich I think there might be safe guards in place to where that doesn't need to happen. She might eventually go for it, but I think she would've been aged out at that point.

Just think, the little girl and another kid gets into an argument and the other kid pulls out a "My dad can beat your dad!" and the little girl pulls a "Well, MY dad is a KAIJU and your dad isn't even in the Defense Force!" and Kafka is in the back listening and just starts bawling and says "SHE CALLED ME DAD!"

Sorta spoilers for Kaiju No 8 Anime Only Viewers! If you hadn't finished Volume 3/4/5 of the manga then don't proceed either. Not an accurate estimate btw.

Kafka doesn't talk at all throughout his entire fight with Hoshina. I think the reason why is because the man would recognize his voice despite the distortion. The vice captain was already suspicious that Kafka was hiding something.

Imagine the tasty angst if our himbo actually blurted out 'Vice Captain Hoshina' instead of stopping himself. The only person willing to give Kafka a chance at becoming a Defense Force Officer and catch up to his best friend/Captain finds out the truth. (Definitely hits harder if both are in a relationship before this for you fanfic writers.)

Believe me when I say that people who ship these two have a lot more material as the manga goes on. Unless there's filler, another major arc is coming up with a focus on Hoshina and Kafka. After that the will reunite with the former confronting the latter about his secret. For the hopeful folks, Hoshina is definitely in the same group as Kikoru about discovering his secret.

I can only imagine the 'What If' should Kafka accidentally blurt out that simple title. Hoshina will be conflicted as his hunch was right in the most insane way possible. If he hides such information then he'll get into trouble with the Defense Force once the Arrest Arc happens.

Hoshina is at a much higher rank unlike Kikoru and Reno. That means the consequences are much harsher for him involving such a massive secret. It would be less severe if Kaiju No.9 didn't exist or remains on the loose.

The possibilities are huge, sad and might have a chance for comfort.

now that i've caught up with the manga, i am thinking about this page again, ichikawa's intro page. so hibino doesn't really acknowledge ichikawa as his partner until way later, but coming back to this leads me to believe that ichikawa has always seen himself as hibino's partner right from the start 🥺

also it's funny that hibino didn't realize that he feels more at ease when ichikawa is around. anyways, that part speaks to me cuz i also have a friend that i just feel more at ease around. i can get as funky and emotional as hibino so having my own ichikawa makes me feel like i have a safe place.
