Culturele Opdracht - Muziek

Ik ben maandag 1 mei naar het concert van Shawn Mendes geweest. De titel van het album dat hij daar vooral speelde, is Illuminate. De nummers zijn vooral geschreven door Shawn Mendes zelf, maar ook door Ido Zmishlany, Harris, Warburton, Zubin Thakkar, Geiger, Danny Parker, Ilsev Juber, Laleh Pourkarim en Gustaf Thörn. Deze mensen hebben bij een of meerdere nummers geholpen bij het schrijven. Het album is uitgebracht op 23 september 2016. Het stuk wordt uitgevoerd door Shawn Mendes zelf en zijn band. Het concert duurde zo ongeveer 1 uur en 45 min. Ik ben voor dit concert naar de Ziggo Dome gegaan. Shawn stond op een podium aan de voorkant en voor de rest waren er overal zitplaatsen. De uitvoering was heel mooi gedaan, hij zong zelf heel goed en de beelden achter hem waren ook vet gedaan. De akoestiek was ook erg goed. Mijn verwachting zijn best hoog, ik vind zijn album ontzettend goed en ik hoop dan ook dat hij net zo goed is als hij live speelt.

De genres die werden gespeeld waren vooral pop, rock en blues. Er waren twee grote schermen waarop je hem zelf kon zien. Achter hem was nog een groter scherm waar op verschillende beelden werden getoond. Soms hemzelf maar andere beelden. Ergens in het midden van de zaal was nog een klein podium in het midden met een piano en daarboven een grote bol waarop verschillende dingen geprojecteerd werden, vooral de maan werd geprojecteerd. Aangezien ik nu het hele album bespreek, vind ik het erg lastig om over de toonduur, klankkleur, toonhoogte, et cetera vragen te beantwoorden. Zijn nummers kunnen snel gaan en veel dynamiek er in hebben maar sommige zijn ook rustig dus het zeker niet hetzelfde bij alle nummers, anders zou het ook wel een heel saai album worden. De omgeving is vooral veel gillende meiden, wat ik eigenlijk altijd wel een beetje irritant vind, maar bij zo’n soort popster is het ook niet echt anders. Er hoort zeker tekst bij de muziek.

De muziek is zeker verhalend. Hij zingt vooral over liefde maar ook bijvoorbeeld over vriendschap. Het verhaal wordt vooral verteld door de tekst, maar de muziek erbij helpt daar ook wel aan mee. Ik vind niet echt dat er een visie wordt uitgedragen in de nummers. Er zitten geen standpunten van hem in zijn nummers vind ik.

Mijn verwachtingen waren zeker niet te hoog, ik vond het echt een geweldig concert. Hij is live net zo goed als op zijn album en ik heb echt zeker wel genoten van zijn concert. Hij speelde ook een aantal nummers van zijn andere album, Handwritten, wat ik ook heel leuk vond. Ik vond wel dat hij iets meer had mogen praten tussen zijn nummers want dat vind ik wel leuk altijd, het gaat daar natuurlijk niet om maar had ik wel leuk gevonden. Voor de rest heb ik echt geen negatieve dingen over hem te zeggen want ik vond het echt een geweldig concert!
