Chuck was just your average highschool student, worried about his grades, dealing with knucklehead bullies, and learning how to talk to girls. His goals to just fit in are ruined when a mysterious stranger named Hogg knocks on his door. The strange old man claims that Chuck’s father (who he previously never knew) was not only a dragon but the King of them, and that he is rightfully next in line. Chuck must learn to unlock his transformation and master his powers so he can fight back against the wicked queen who took his father’s crown.

With his classmates and fellow secret dragons Cowparsley (the nerdiest guy in town)and Pyrite (The mysterious snarky girl who thinks she’s too cool for this), Hogg teaches Chuck the ins and out of being a dragon, all while juggling the challenges of being in highschool!

one of the people on here i follow mentioned samuel r delaney’s hogg and i’ve been thinking about that book all day, how repulsive and vital and uncomfortable it is, how impossible to recommend it is, how important it feels.

i read it a year or two after reading and despising lolita, and the two are always mixed together in my head. they’ve never made a movie of hogg, and they almost certainly never will; that’s hogg’s strength and lolita’s failure.

Dragons with extra limbs tend to fall into a few different camps. There are ones that are so long or heavy that extra limbs actually benefit locomotion, thosd that are so “extra” in personality that their appearance becomes sorta maximalist, and those that are just kinda a scrambled mess end end up with 3 wings and 7 legs.

How other dragons perceive you depends mostly on the individuals in question. A powerful dragon with extra limbs will still probably earn respect, even if seen as a bit eccentric. Extra heads are something that was very in vogue for centuries to show one’s formidability, but the younger generations now find very “tacky”.

If you arnt an exceptionally powerful dragon, unusual body plans are mostly seen as just silly or unappealing, tho some still try to take it in stride.

every time the wholesome vs weird discourse crosses my timeline and it seems like folks are lining up for one and not the other i get so cross-eyed. you need both? you need stupid skyhooked happy ending wish fulfillment bullshit and you need visceral upsetting flensing wish fulfillment and trying to get rid of either of them is damaging. you need the boxcar children and you need hogg, it's not one or the other, it's both, at different times or simultaneously, stop insisting that they both don't have their purposes.
