Blog #4: Yelp restaurant reviews and fake news/misinformation
This blog post will focus on the topic of fake news and misinformation, as it relates to online restaurant reviews - specifically the Yelp platform. It will discuss examples of fake reviews on the platform and other deceptive practices.
In 2020, Yelp publicly lambasted burger chain Burgerim for offering cash, discounts and other incentives in exchange for positive reviews about the restaurant (Pershan, 2020). On the business pages for the Burgerim locations, Yelp displayed a consumer alert warning to users that read, “We wanted you to know because buying reviews not only hurts consumers, but also honest businesses who play by the rules.”
This is only one example of the chain's deceptive practices; Restaurant Business also did extensive reporting on how Burgerim defrauded franchisees and employees (Maze, 2020).
In a study on fake news advertising, Rao (2021) found that once identified and removed, "the absence of fake news ads results in a drop in users arriving not only through fake news ad referrals but also through direct visits, suggesting that the two paths have positive spillovers." For the purpose of this Burgerim and Yelp examples, it would be interesting to see any data that shows whether Burgerim lost business after Yelp cracked down on its fake reviews, or whether its downfall soon after was just a coincidence.
Yelp gets 100 million users every month on desktop, and 36 million monthly users on its mobile app (Pershan, 2020). It makes sense then, that because Google has the power through its algorithm to "bury" Yelp in search results, the platform "must work harder to establish trust, developing features like consumer alerts" (Pershan, 2020).
Rao (2021) notes that actions taken by Google and other search engines might have impacted organic rankings after fake news advertisements were shut down. Future research go beyond advertising and more into things like crowdsourced reviews would be informative given how popular a platform like Yelp is.

Then make a decision based on whether the traffic is enough to justify the money you will spend. After all, you want it to be worth the money.
