GH Tunes - Best of 2016
In 2016, new Ghanaian and Nigerian tunes continued to dominate my afrobeats selections and radio playlists. While Naija songs continued to be the most popular, it was interesting to notice how strongly Naija music in 2016 was influenced by Ghanaian beats. Those slowed-down 105-115 bpm beats that defined the new afrobeats/hiplife sound of Ghana as they switched from azonto to akayida, have now become increasingly common in Nigeria as well. In 2015 it was “My Woman My Everything” produced by Ghana's own DJ Breezy, in 2016 the Ghanaian influence was clear in songs like “Omo Alhaji”, “Koffi Anan”, “No Kissing Baby” and many others. It’s safe to say 2016 was also the year of Mr Eazi. Nigerian-born but Ghana-based Mr Eazi coined his new school ‘banku music’ sound with Juls the producer. Here I chose to consider Mr Eazi’s songs GH tunes since he is based in GH. Shatta Wale continued to release songs non-stop and some of them were hugely popular. Bisa Kdei continued to make waves with his new school highlife, and his 2015 hit “Mansa” continued to be among the most popular songs. 2016 also saw the rise of new GH artists such as Wisa Greid, Atom and Article Wan. Here I also include songs like “Y3 Wo Krom” by Atom and “Kakai” by Shatta Wale on the list as 2016 tunes just because here in Finland we started playing them quite late. 1. Joey B - U x Me (Prod. by Kuvie) 2. Shatta Wale - Baby (Chop Kiss) (Prod. by Da Maker) 3. Mr Eazi feat. Sarkodie - Anointing (Prod. by Juls & Team Salut) 4. Shatta Wale - Kakai (Prod. by Shatta Wale) 5. Atom feat. Jhunea - Y3 Wo Krom (Prod. by Dr Ray) 6. E.L. - Koko (Prod. by PeeGH) 7. Bisa Kdei - Jwe (Prod. by Bisa Kdei) 8. Article Wan - Solo (Prod. by Article Wan) 9. E.L. - Kaa Bu Ame (Prod. by Sam1) 10. Shatta Wale - Obordorbidi (Prod. by Da Maker) + Wisa Greid feat. Sarkodie - Ekiikimi Remix Becca feat. Bisa Kdei - Beshiwo Shatta Wale - Mahama Paper Mr Eazi feat. Efya - Skin Tight Bisa Kdei feat. Samini - 6 Strings Mac M feat. Vacs - Number 8 Shatta Wale - Hol’ It Wisa Greid - Cocoa E.L. - Mi Naa Bo Po Eazzy feat. Mr Eazi - Forever Guru feat. Singlet - Samba Kofi Kinaata - Sweetie Pie Wisa Greid - Slow Motion Donzy feat. Sarkodie & Piesie - Club Sista Afia feat. Kofi Kinaata - Yiwani Sista Afia feat. Afedzi Perry - Kofi Mr Eazi feat. Joey B & Dammy Krane - Hollup E.L. feat. Patoranking - Bolemor Shatta Wale - Bie Gya R2bees - Hi GH/UK tunes 1. Eugy feat. Mr Eazi - Dance For Me Late 2016 songs that will count as 2017 songs 1. Bisa Kdei feat. Patoranking - Life 2. Kofi Kinaata - Confession 3. Sarkodie - Fa Sor Ho 4. R2bees feat. Wizkid - Tonight 2015 tunes that stayed relevant in 2016 1. Bisa Kdei - Mansa 2. Stonebwoy - Go Higher 3. Kofi Kinaata - Susuka

“we eat, we drink, we dance, we meet”
You all know that a party was mentioned in my last post so let me tell you what happened. Yuae (I spelled her name completely wrong in my last post) our friend from the University of Pittsburgh told us about a dance party of some sort happening last night and we pretty much invited ourselves to come along because 1. We don’t know anyone here and we want to make friends and 2. We are bored, as hell and we want to see new things other than the four walls in our rooms. She asked Esmond (pronounced Desmond but without the D), whom she works with at the research center, if we can come and he told her that it was fine if we came along! He arranged for mahama camboo’s to come pick us up. mahama camboo’s are motor taxi things. You know in New York how there’s like a tent thing attached to a bicycle; well mahama camboo’s are pretty much the same thing except it’s a motorbike (I’m posing a picture so you guys can actually see what it looks like). These mahama camboo’s were supposed to pick us up at 7 but you know how African Time is and they didn’t pick us up until 7:30. While we were waiting, we began conversing with the security guards at the center who patrole the area and we ask them if they ever get tired and they said, “no we never tire because we are protecting you and must keep you safe” (Mom that one’s for you). When the motor taxi pulled up bumping some sweet tunes, we got in and stopped at a noodle place in town on the side of rode because Yuae and Amy hadn’t had dinner yet. I honestly wish I hadn’t had dinner yet because they were eating like fried rice and noodles that had eggs and all that good stuff and it looked delicious. At the noodle place there was little baby there just staring at us. He must have been around 2 because he was walking but he wasn’t talking… not to us at least. We bent down to try to make him smile but he ran away crying. Some guy told us that he’s scared because you are white and he is black. That made me sad because I didn’t want him scared but I also understood because I am sure we are the first white people he has ever seen in his life. We kept trying to make him laugh but he was not having it, maybe we can try again another time so that he won’t be scared anymore!
Once Amy and Yuae got their noodles we headed back on the motor taxi with Geesus (prounced Jesus) and Sym (prounced mime but with an S instead of an M). They were our mahama camboo drivers for the night that Esmond set up for us. They took us to Aden’s Spot, which was just a bar. It was super low key there and actually really relaxing. It’s a place I definitely would hang out a lot at if I lived in Navrongo (which I do at the moment but I won’t be going there a lot). There I decided to get a beer to try some of the local treats. The beer I got was called Club and it pretty much tasted like bud light, which I was 100% okay with. At Aden’s Spot we got talking to Esmond and he told us he has worked at the center for about 2 years now and that he is actually in the process of applying to Georgetown University to become a candidate for the Masters of Science in Global Health program (which is the one that we are in). We got really excited for him because it would be so cool for him to come to DC and we could show him around but we also were so shocked because he’s worked at the research center for so long and his job is one that I think a lot of us would love to have. He has the job that we want but we the degree that he wants. We also asked Esmond where we were going after this and he said Graceland Hotel. Amy asked him what we were going to do there and he said, “we dance, we drink, we eat, we meet” and that is the best way to spend a night in my opinion.
After Aden’s place we got in our taxis and headed to Graceland Hotel (which is literally just an abandoned hotel). When we rolled up I literally felt like I was back at UConn rolling up to a frat party and Esmond was our #fratdaddy because we all followed behind him so they would let us in and then he literally protected us the whole night and made sure we were all comfortable. We danced and laughed and it was a lot of fun. At one point in the night Esmond and his friends went up to talk to the DJ and after that, American songs started playing and everyone got hyped and also everyone stared at us. I totally lost it when they started playing Soulja Boy Kiss Me Thru the Phone song because that’s a total #throwback #tbt. After dancing for a while, Hannah and I had to go to the bathroom. When we the bathroom, we see that it has a completely see-through door and its facing right out at the party so everyone can see you. But we had to go so I just stood in front of the door so no one could see Hannah using the bathroom and then Hannah did the same for me. Except when I was using the bathroom, two guys came up to her and I guess wanted to take a picture with her and they were getting mad she wouldn’t move away from the door so I scrambled out of the bathroom and Esmond came running over to get these guys away from us #ourhero. After that fiasco we decided to leave and Geesus and Sym were there with our chariots to take us back home. We got back at like 10:45 and Esmond told us he was going back to the party. Since it gets so dark here so early, people start the party early and continue on until like 3 in the morning, which I cannot do. I cannot stay out until 3 when I leave to go out at 11! Ghanaians definitely know how to have fun. The whole experience ended up being a great one!
This morning Amy and I awoke to the sound of banging and screaming on our door at 8 o’clock. This was because the neighborhood kids wanted us to come out and play but that was wayyyyy to early for us to really function so we didn’t even answer the door. I haven’t told you all about the kids in the compound. There is Claudia, Ben, Ken, Dorna, Eunice, Carmel, Calvin, and Jessica. We met them yesterday because it was a holiday and because they like to run in and around the guesthouse whenever they want. They continued to know on our door intermittently for the next 3 hours (hella needy if you ask me). This forced us to wake up and we cleaned our room a little bit and then Ali, Hannah, and I decided to go for a walk behind the compound because we haven’t explored that area yet. It was a beautiful day and the scenery was beautiful so it was a nice late morning walk. We came back dripping in sweat to the smiles of all the kids so we couldn’t hide from them any longer. After a while I snuck away to take a nap. After my nap I asked myself what I usually do on the weekend at home when its really hot out and to be honest with you, I usually sit on the couch watching TV, scroll through my phone, and snack on some cheese (my parents can vouch for this). The only difference here is that I don’t have wifi or cable so at least it’ll force me to read and work a little bit on my research (we’ll see if that actually happens). At the moment the kids are banging on my door and Calvin just barged in so this will be an interesting couple of months with them. Amy and I are running away to our research center room to get away from them #futureparents.
P.S. I know I keep saying that my posts should be getting shorter but so many random things keep happening to us that I feel you all need to know!
