I’ve seen this video circulating recently and was wondering if you had any idea what’s going on and why the orca is doing this. I don’t know much about cetaceans

Hello! Thanks for the ask.

So this gentleman is Nakhod, one of the adult male orcas at Chimelong Spaceship (which is in China, so it would not be even remotely affected by the SWIMS Act promoted in the video’s caption). Let’s preface by saying that since I don’t actually know this animal or the specifics of his care, I can’t come to any hard and fast conclusions from watching a 20 second video.

The Instagram page you linked is using this clip as proof of “mental health issues.” First off, animals can’t be diagnosed with mental health disorders as we understand them, but I think it’s safe to say they’re referring to stereotypies.

This could absolutely be a stereotypy, and I definitely don’t want to diminish that possibility. However, but its very nature, a stereotypy must be repeated. In this 20-second clip, we only see Nakhod smack his head once before swimming off, so this particular incident doesn’t seem overly stereotypical. Personally, I think it’s more likely he’s displaying misdirected aggressive behavior, particularly since he opens his mouth afterward. As for what’s causing him to be so frustrated, it could be he’s annoyed at the guests. But the fact that he very clearly smacks his genital slit against the acrylic really makes me think it may be sexual.

Chimelong is actively breeding its orcas (Nakhod himself has already sired a calf), so we know their whales are not on birth control (at least not all the time). It’s certainly within the realm of possibility that there was a female in estrus that he was either separated from or rebuffed by. From personal experience, male cetaceans tend to get a little crazy when the females are receptive, and that includes aggressive displays. If I had to go with my gut, I think this is sexual behavior. But again, that’s pure speculation on my part.

So, in conclusion, I don’t know for sure what’s going on. He could be developing a stereotypy, or he could be frustrated, sexually or not. It’s not a benign behavior, but it’s also not automatic evidence of extreme distress.

Note: Normal orca vocals sound sad and pathetic. They’re not screaming or wailing, that’s just how they are. Not sure if the video said “sound on” to hear that or the thuds from him banging the acrylic.

Another note: My overall feelings on Chimelong are really complicated. They purchased their whales from wild captures 8-10 years ago, but their current facility is by far the largest and certainly the most enriching orca habitat ever built. They’ve also had a lot of success breeding healthy calves, which indicates they’re at least doing something right. At the same time, the park is outer space themed for some reason, and since I can’t read or speak Mandarin, I have no idea what the educational value of the aquarium section is. But I hope the Chimelong pod does for China what Shamu did for the United States—inspire a passion for orcas.

Maybe I’ll post a better video of this later, but probably not; it took months for me to even bother to post this one.

So I think I mentioned this before here when I was starting, but now it’s finished (and has been for a while now): My own 8x8x8 LED cube. This is a purely decorative electronics project; I’ve seen some people on Youtube build theirs, so I figured, I can do that as well. As you can see, it has a lot of blue LEDs (512, or 8x8x8, to be precise), and it uses those to display whatever patterns I like.

Building this was honestly kind of annoying; 512 is a lot of LEDs to solder together. Weirdly enough, getting that many LEDs is actually dirt cheap, I paid like 10€ with shipping (I ordered in China). The most expensive thing is the acrylic case.

In technical details, all the hardware and software is custom. You don’t have to do that, you can download finished software, but for me, that would have been less fun. The control board uses an STM32, specifically an STM32F030C8T6, because that’s one of the only ones that were available. It still has far more than enough power for this, though; I’m running it at 48 MHz, which is frankly ridiculous, but it means I never have to think about performance. It can be controlled via an iPhone app, and uses an ESP8266 module for connectivity… or it will, once I’ve written the software for both sides of that. The whole assembly is powered by a 3.3 volt small power supply from Amazon, which is plenty.

The trick to controlling that many LEDs is to not control them individually. The LEDs are divided into eight horizontal layers and 64 vertical columns. The cathodes, that is the minus sides, of all LEDs in a horizontal layer are connected, and the anodes, the plus sides, of all LEDs in a vertical layer are connected.

In practice, I only ever have one layer of LEDs turned on at the same time, by connecting it to minus. I set the pattern that layer displays by connecting the columns of the LEDs that are to be lit to positive voltage, and then I connect the layer that is to be lit to negative voltage, so current can flow. The LEDs above and below also get positive voltage, but their negative side isn’t connected, so they stay dark. The LEDs on the lit layer that are dark all have their negative sides connected, but not their positives, so they stay dark as well.

Then I simply switch which layer I’m showing faster than the human eye can see (I think currently at 8 kHz, which is frankly ridiculous, but the microcontroller and the shift registers I use as column drivers don’t complain).

Overall, I’m really happy with how it turned out. I also learned a lot for how I’d do it if I ever did this again, but it was so much work that I’m not really in any hurry to try.

Last year my father bought a plot of land, at a great deal of course from a widow who wanted to move away. It’s within the same five miles that we’ve lived in for the past two decades, ever since we moved to my hometown. I was a little surprised by his choice, considering that he has always advocated for living below your means. Because (as I came to know incrementally) the plot is being transformed into a beautiful sprawling new build, a bright suburban New England house with a formal sitting room, a great room, a formal dining room, a master bedroom on the ground floor, and a lovely tiled foyer with vaulted ceilings that will eventually house the ubiquitous chandelier with acrylic beads. My sisters are mildly excited about it, bickering over who gets what room and whether they’ll have to share a bathroom. Now that the potential new house has four and a half bathrooms, they can be possessive, demanding of their privacy. I laughed and reminded them at one point we all shared one bathroom. I think it’s a little ironic because out of all of my sisters and perhaps even my parents, I wanted that house the most growing up. The luxury of having dedicated spaces for everything, separating the lived in clutter and mess from what guests would see. A beautiful mahagony china cabinet with carefully arranged Lenox dishes that would come out for special occasions, a study to work in with built in bookshelves, a den to which I could take my friends and we could prank call our classmates or watch Disney channel- all the idealized visions I picked up from our upper middle class family friends. And I although I knew even then that the trapping of suburbia were precisely that no matter how nicely they glittered, part of me still craved the comforts that my friends and classmates had so easily. What I had in comparison was a too cramped, perpetually cluttered, and sometimes sticky small house that was littered with half finished projects. The cabinets above the stove had foil on them since my mother was always cooking and she got tired of cleaning the grease off the wood. It felt embarrassing to admit: on the first level, that it wasn’t up too par with everyone else’s standard of living and on the second level that I was materialistic enough to be bothered by it. A classmate who used to bike by asked me once idly, “How do you guys all fit?” My face never burned faster. My mother often mentions the old house fondly, saying it served us well. My sisters never really seemed bothered by the house’s condition either and it seemed so vain and ungrateful to complain that I don’t think I ever verbalized it. Because the house did seem to expand for our needs (if not my wants): my parents let us paint our rooms and fill them with wall decals and picture frames and white princess beds. My mother sewed me gauzy purple curtains to match the exact color of my room. And in the basement, they got me two rows of bookshelves to display my books. We live and love openly, my mom often says. We’re  not quiet tidy little people. Having spent most of my life trying to be one of those people, it’s strange to come back and see my family planning for this new stage. I can’t help but be a little wary, knowing the significance of this lifestyle and the impact it can have on our perception of each other. My parents don’t really need to beckon to society considering that they’re closer to retirement age now. Only a few of my sisters live at home and they’re hardly socialites. It’s just a house, everyone says. I wonder how they’ll clean the chandelier.

Judy Chicago, the Metaphor of Sex and Art

Judy Chicago was born on July 20, 1939, and she became a well-known artist, art educator, and creator of the first feminist art programme in the United States at California State University, Fresno. She is an American feminist artist whose intricate and narrowly focused installations contributed to the women’s liberation movement’s visual presence in the 1970s and beyond. The artist, Judith Sylvia Cohen, was born in Chicago, Illinois, and went to the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Art Institute of Chicago. She began drawing at age five, inspired by her mother, May Cohen, who encouraged her love of the arts.

Judy characterises her previous pieces as minimalist. She worked with pyrotechnics and explosives as performance art, manipulating coloured smoke flashes to create “atmospheres” outside. She debuted as a solo artist at the Rolf Nelson Gallery in Los Angeles. Then, she was one of only four female painters to appear in the Jewish Museum’s inaugural major minimalist exhibition. She made a series of abstract paintings called “Pasadena Lifesavers”, using acrylic paint on Plexiglas to explore her sexuality.

To give the impression that the shapes “turn, dissolve, open, close, vibrate, wiggle,” these works combined colours to depict her realisation that “she was multi-orgasmic.” Her research on women’s sexuality and representation underwent a dramatic sea change after the release of the series.

Chicago’s “The Birth Project” (1980–1985) and “The Holocaust Project” (1985–1993) continue to explore themes related to women’s lives. “The Dinner Party,” her most well-known piece, is permanently displayed in the Brooklyn Museum. The installation consists of a large ceremonial feast on a triangle table, honouring women’s history with sitting arrangements meant for 39 legendary and well-known ladies from mythology. Beneath the triangular table, on the white tile floor, are the gold-inscribed names of nine hundred and nine women.

Judy Chicago and the Feminism

‘Chicago’s fascination with women’s history is one of the defining aspects of her feminism and one of the features that mark her as part of her generational cohort. For Chicago and others coming into feminist consciousness in the late 1960s, the pressing need for a usable women-centred past enlisted history as an element of their political practice. Feminists in the early 1970s also focused on women’s daily resistance practices and renewal strategies. For Chicago, this focus on “ordinary” women would eventually translate into her attention to needlepoint, china painting, and other art forms dismissed by the art world as “craft” in The Dinner Party. But in 1970, women’s history, which she was most interested in writing, was what she called “female art history.” This would involve an intense focus on the female body’, writes Jane Gerhard.

Chicago utilised her courses, which included both men and women, as testing grounds for her feminism during her first teaching term. She declared, for instance, that “only the women talk; none of the men talk” in one of her classes. Some males who thought her views ridiculous and her style harshly booed her. The rate of attrition was high. While some students left school, others vowed to stick with it because they found Chicago challenging and motivating.

Midway through the 1970s, the realization of the limitations within heterosocial political groups that had spurred the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s persisted. However, other feminists, notably those in Chicago, saw separation as the solution to those limitations rather than integration. Chicago accepted guys; her actions did not imply this. Instead, she aimed to establish independent, male-free areas where empowered women might unite to build a more just and equal society.

Toward that end, Chicago recreated her studio to be a space where women could encounter the insights of feminism and experience a feminist lifestyle by living and working with other women and where their sense of themselves could be transformed from girlfriends and wives to artists and feminists — goals very similar to those of her classroom. Yet this time, Chicago, not the university, was in charge.

According to Jane Gerhard, ‘Between 1974 and 1979, Chicago mobilized feminist and financial interest in the project by giving public lectures to women’s groups, art groups, and any other venue that would pay her. While touring the country, she sought contacts with people who could help her raise much-needed funds. Later, the publication of her first memoir, Through the Flower, won several converts to her project who were willing to move to California to help her. By the end of 1975, she had a core staff that took on more and more project management.

On a road stop along the steep mountain pass to Baguio City in the 1950s I ask for candy from an unwilling Ifugao girl. The classic White Rabbit candy from China crosses generations and cultures, still popular in the 21st century, floats with the ancient bronze amulet of the Ifugao in the visual stream of this childhood encounter. The two children stand in a field of phyllotaxis algorithmic patterns that embody the life systems that sustain us. This painting is a moment of innocence steeped in Philippine and US colonial history. My work encompasses memory, culture, politics and the natural environment mixing abstraction, figuration and symbol and some humor in this visual narrative.

What an impressive set of display stands these are. I love the subtle rainbow color. I’m using these to display my crystal and rock collection in my china cabinet. These seem quite durable and for some of the heavier pieces I put those over the legs of the stand for added support. They come protected coated in a pull off film which I removed very slowly and had no problem with the color peeling off with the film. You need to put these together which was simple and it comes with its own screwdriver for assembly. I’m definitely please with this set.
